Chad Henne has bought insurance for 2010

One of the questions often asked of me when discussing the Dolphins is whether Chad Henne is indeed Miami's quarterback of the future or just a first-year starter whose future is not yet certain. The Dolphins get the same question from folks like me -- the media.

The answer?

"I still think of him as a first year starter, yeah," coach Tony Sparano said this week. "I think that we’d be making a mistake to think otherwise right now. I think that I want to let the whole process happen here. Whenever we flip the calendar, I'll say he's a second year starter, or whatever the case is then. I just want to let the whole process happen and sit down and evaluate the whole body of work at the end of this. I think that's really fair for Chad.

"He's doing a tremendous job right now. I see him getting better, and better, and better. I just want to see this thing go, and really be able to break down some of the good things he's done, and some of the not so good things at the end of this whole thing, and then we'll go from there. To me, he's a first year starter that's getting better and better every week."

That's fair. The Dolphins will assess Henne when the season is over. A novel idea in today's give-it-to-me-yesterday digital world.

But here is the truth the Dolphins won't tell you yet. Henne is indeed their quarterback for the next couple of years. That simple. Henne is 7-3 as a starter in his first year starting. That has bought him much good will this year, but it has also bought him the starting job for 2010.

Simply put, the Dolphins cannot have a first-year quarterback help raise the team from the depths of an 0-3 start to playoff contention in 2009 and not reward him with the starting job the following year. So Henne is your guy for 2010.

But 2010 will determine if Henne is indeed the guy longterm. If Henne continues to improve, continues to win, he will continue buying himself more commitment from the team. If he struggles, questions will creep in to his future.

So Henne needs to improve to make certain he puts up a Jake Long block on the possible questions.

Next season Henne will have to correct the glitches and holes in his game he has at times shown the past 10 games. Those issues?

He has to cut down on interceptions. He has 9 interceptions versus 9 TDs this year.

"The turnovers obviously come out at you," Henne said. "I think we have nine interceptions at this point. A lot of those are coming at the end of the game. For me it is more of a focus and concentration at the end of the game knowing what the situation is to begin with and not to force the ball.

"Yes, for me, some of them are forced balls, some of them are tipped. I think as a quarterback with a lot of interceptions you really have to correct it yourself."

Henne has to find a touch pass to go with his line-drive throws.

"I think overall it is coming along," Henne said. "We work on it all the time at practice and getting it over the linebackers’ heads. It showed up on Sunday against Jacksonville making some of those completions over the linebackers' heads and making some throws. That is a big improvement for me and I just got to keep working on it. It is just going to come along with experience."

He has to improve his accuracy as the Dolphins expect their QB to complete 64-66 percent of his passes compared to the 58.8 percent Henne is currently completing.

Henne also needs to get through his progression of reads quicker than he has at times this year. Reading the field quicker means you take fewer sacks because the football is out faster. Henne has already taken 20 sacks this season in 10 games, while Chad Pennington absorbed 24 sacks in 16 games last year with an inferior offensive line. So the process has to speed up a bit for Henne.

Finally, Henne has to get to the point where the Dolphins can rely on him to win them games. Obviously he needs help in this regard. The Dolphins need to put more talent around him. But the truly elite quarterbacks are not game-managers. The offense is on their shoulders.

Henne has done that at times this year -- against the Jets in the first game and the second outing versus New England come to mind -- but he's also failed at it in games the Dolphins needed more points late to pull out a victory.

All told, you cannot be displeased with what Henne has done in his first 10 games. At no time has the moment been bigger than him. At no time did anyone suggest he's not smart enough. At no point has he thrown a pass that everyone agreed is beyond the capability of his arm-strength.

And after the three-interception meltdown at Buffalo, Henne responded with a very good game against New England.

So is Chad Henne Miami's quarterback the next decade? No one knows yet. But he definitely has already bought himself the starting job in 2010. No question.

[Update: I am told by a club source that Joe Berger will start for the Dolphins at center against the Titans Sunday. It will mark the fourth consecutive start for Berger since Jake Grove suffered a high ankle sprain against Carolina.

Also, I got my Dolphins holiday card in the mail today. Check it out below.]

Not to be too optimistic at this point, but his arm strength, accuracy (though still a bit inconsistent), patience reading through his progressions, work ethic and confidence speak very well for him having a great future here. P Manning through quite a lot of pics his first year, as did Favre in his first few years (well really his whole career). He has shown the ability to make major-league throws, too. I was not excited when I saw he was the pick on draft day and questioned the Dolphins brass when they said they had him up there with Flacco and Ryan, but now I think he can eventually become as good as any QB in the league.

Henne was a godsend. While I still don't agree with the brasses decision on pat white in this years draft, they def made a great choice in Henne in last years draft. Go Phins!!

No doubt Henne is the future of the Dolphins. Best qb we've had here in Miami in years

Where does this leave Chad next year. I heard he wants to return. Will he accept a backup role? that would be perfect.

Good blog Mando. As usual. Live blog tomorrow?

One thing I hope the Dolphins do before 2010 is give Henne some weapons at WR.

The current group sucks!

You can't go into a gun fight carrying a knife.

i must say it's a big relife for dolphins at last to believe that they do a reliable QB .AS FOR THE WR'S IT LOOKS AS THEY WILL PRODUCE MUCH BETTER NEXT YEAR ONCE HENNE BECOMES MORE OF A SURE THING .

He has to have more weapons around him without a doubt. However,I thought the season was lost when Pennington went down,so if you consider the 0-3 start and 7-3 since....Henne is the man.

Chad penne will never come back after the pat white draft .this team needs to foucs on the futur not collecting old players are done .look fot JT and Porter both to move on .

Who's more inaccurate when it matters?:

Henne or NJ?

Who's the biggest Fraud , Heil hitler , Dead fish ( the dolphins stink like dead fish ) or Dying breed ?. Oh wait , they're all the same person / FRAUD !

Mando ,

I don't disagree with what your saying , but the way you say it , your either psychic or you don't believe what the coach is telling you . In which case , why are you asking him in the first place ?

Mando, once again good insight. One question: who evaluates HC and assistants? I assume it's Parcells but because these guys were his choice, how objective is it?

BTW, Henne's % is the same as camp/preseason, no change.

cocajoe,
very good point ,how objective he's ?

i do believe that team parcells is only very good at taking any team from faliure to very good team .no more .look at new england, cowboys and dolphins .he always come to a team in a very bad shape and fix it the right way ,after that he moves .

Mando, I appreciate the post and obviously so does the sun sentinel who wrote about Henne this afternoon after you did this morning.

YOu guys working together or are they just copying your idea?

Nuts!

Armando, thank you for having the tech guy respond to the I-pod issues. It's great to be back in touch with the Dolphin fans again.

I'm a huge fins fan and if Henne isn't our qb for the next 5 years I may just give up

Dear Mr. Salguero

Henne should be judged from the time Ronnie Brown went down.
When Ronnie was still playing we where using wildcat and Pat white on some plays.
Was the offence truely on Henne's shoulders then as opposed to now ?

I like the kid myself.....I think and he is the long term anwser.

Soiled :)

I'd rather see pat white get a chance before we crown henne

Mando,

Great post and it was fun chatting yesterday during your live blog

Mando,

You have to consider that Henne was the backup during training camp, so the chemestry with the receivers (that aren't very good) is coming trough the season, also, the accuracy is improving, so even I agree with you that is too early to decide if Henne is the QB of the next decade I think the indications are very good, all the tools that he has displayed and the improvement, probably he won't be a Payton Manning but he can be a very good QB for years to come, just hope it became a reality in the next 1 or 2 years but I definitly think he can be our QB for many years.

Armando,

You said,

"So is Chad Henne Miami's quarterback the next decade? No one knows yet. But he definitely has already bought himself the starting job in 2010. No question."

I say he's bought himself the starting job only if he "finishes" by getting Fins into the playoffs. If he doesn't, Pennington and White should be allowed to compete for the starting job.

I think we will see more out of Chad in the next couple of weeks and what he can really bring to the table, he will be the starting QB here for atleast the next two-three years unless he lays a complete egg.

The whole TD's, INT's, percentage argument is crap if you ask me .. he has to go with the plays that are called and while you may compare him to the other QB's none of them were coming out when a WC package in the Redzone. His play will get better along with the play of the WR as you have to remember they a very young as well ... he has played well in tough games and most of his drives in games that were lost were not his fault (i.e. Camarillo throwing the ball out of bounds, or the dropped balls by Hartline and Ginn in the first NE game that killed those drives) The only game which hurt the team was the Bills game but that was a complete failure all around .. not just the three picks but the team itself was playing poorly around him.

His W-L record and his play in close games speaks volumes about him being a longtime starting QB for the dolphins .. I dont' need to see anyone else for along time. If we don't have a QB controversy than what are we going to talk about mando? lol

Wake me up in 2020, he's a dude, imagine if he had WRs

Not totally sold on Chad(neck-fat)Henne yet, but things are looking good, lets see how he performs the next three weeks before we crown him "The Savior"...Just saying...

I think Henne has the potential to be the qb we have all been waiting for, since #13 retired. How many passes have receivers dropped in crucial situations this year? As one of the other comments pointed out, the receivers spent training camp, exhibition and first 3 games used to Pennington's mediocre velocity and are still adjusting to the strong arm Henne has. Give him (them) some time and we'll see good things in the future.

i am good to go to meet the snow chllange;
1-snow machine ready
2- i have every thing i nedd including the meatballs .
3-my beer in the freezer.

the only thing left out is to see a good funny fight between NJ and d.breed .

The 3 interception melt down against Buffalo? That wasnt a meltdown. On his first interception, he was hit as he threw the ball, and on his third, it was tipped.

Aloco, Did you get your christmas Ham yet????????

I think Henne is absolutely the franchise QB, and he is playing lights out as a first year starter. The Dolphins are lucky to have him.

one important point i may add is HENNE PLAYE W. NO VERY GOOD WR'S PLUS THE DEFENSE HE HAS IN FRONT OF VERY POOR AND LOUSY ALL YEAR SO FAR BUT 2 GAMES THEY DESERVED THEIR PAY CHECK .I AM JUST SAYING .

PS...I LEARNED A NEW ENGLISH WORD ( I MAY ADD ).
