Dolphins defense needs new approach vs. Pats

Just watched the New Orleans Saints demolish the New England Patriots. It was such a thorough whipping of the AFC East leaders that coach Bill Belichick pulled his starting offense out of the game with 5:38 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Belichick, by the way, has the look of a coach in his final season at New England. That is just my instinct and not anything I am reporting -- just a feel.

Anyway, the point here is how the Saints were able to so dominate the Patriots on both sides of the ball, but particularly on defense.

The Saints made Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Wes Welker and the rest of the Patriots offense seem ordinary. And New Orleans did it while playing a rookie cornerback (Michael Jenkins) and two vets signed off the street within the last couple of weeks (Mike McKenzie and Chris McAlister).

"It's pretty amazing those guys weren't part of our team two weeks ago," New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees said. "The fact they got out there and contributed as much as they did, it's pretty amazing considering we do some pretty complicated things on defense."

Amazing, indeed, in that Brady was intercepted twice and left the Big Easy with a terrible 55.0 QB rating.

"They did what they do," Belichick said of the New Orleans defense. "They played zone. They double-covered. They rushed. They played man."

The Saints did it all and this is where I'm hoping Dolphins defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni stayed up past his bedtime watching the game.

In Miami's 27-17 loss to New England on Nov. 8, the Dolphins came after Brady and put their cornerbacks in man-coverage on practically every play. It was the blueprint borrowed from the New York Giants' Super Bowl victory over New England.

That plan failed the Dolphins the first game -- in part because they don't have the personnel the Giants had two seasons ago. Well, the Miami defense needs to protect its corners on Sunday as much as the Saints had to Monday night. The Dolphins need to diffuse the Moss big-play threat as much as New Orleans did. The Dolphins need to frustrate Brady as much as New Orleans did.

So why wouldn't the Dolphins try to confuse Brady? Why wouldn't they try to protect their two rookie corners with some zone and double-coverage as well as some man? Why wouldn't the Dolphins come with six-man rushes followed by three-man rushes and eight-man coverage?

Why wouldn't the Dolphins do the unexpected rather than what they have been doing practically all year long?

The truth of the matter is Pasqualoni's defense has been a disappointment so far this season. It has allowed a whopping 275 points this year, which averages out to 25 points per game. Miami is 26th in the NFL in scoring defense, and considering points are what determine the outcome of games, that's an important and distressing statistic.

It is a statistic that has fans quite unhappy with Pasqualoni because the Dolphins have devoted many resources to making the defense a good one since Bill Parcells took over the football decisions in 2008.

The Dolphins have drafted seven defensive players the past two years -- including first-rounder Vontae Davis in 2009 and what-should-be-considered-a-first-rounder (32nd overall) Phillip Merling in 2008. Three defensive players were added via trades and six more players were signed as unrestricted free agents.

That's 17 players the new regime has added to play defense. And they are giving up 25 points per game compared to 27.3 points per game in 2007 under Cam Cameron and 17.6 points per game in 2006 under Nick Saban.

So yeah, doing something different vs. New England might be a good idea for Pasqualoni.

Now we know why we suck in the 4th QTR

IMO the Phins cannot make 4th quarter adjustments. The opposing teams know this and the Phins know it, yet there is no adjustments made.

Sometimes playing the old players. This is what we had in the past under Wandssedt was playing the same so so and expecting a different outcome. Sounds like the definition of insanity.

Isnt great how Belli-cheat just upgraded his status to Yellow-belli! I was ROTFLMAO when I saw him pull the offensive starters with 5:38 left in the game. He can dish it out but now he proves he cant take it. Still LMFAO over this.

NJ so intimidates others like dying breed, that they cower and fear him....like GOD. Maybe he has a God complex, then he responds "but I am God" hahahhahahhahahahhahaha

Also after watching the Saints make Yellow-belli cry uncle, if we had to lose the status as only unbeaten untied SB champions. I would be proud to share it with the Saints after watching Monday nights game alone.

Policia? Is that spanish for pol-licker?

@DyingBreed after last nights game I think the Saints might be worthy to move in on our block, they are a classy team as well. Still woulda been freekin awesome if we didnt blow that lead..........

dying breed does cower to NJ. He used to be tough, now he is spineless like the dolphins 4 qtr defense hahahahahhahahahahhahahaha
By the way, policia is Spanish for cop. He is a cool dude though.

Keep kissing butt it will pay off. hahahahahha

LOL, Bellicheat isn't going anywhere...This year is their free roll season as they made lots of trades and just trying to win it all with no defense. Next draft they have a ton of picks and will get much younger and better.

Even as they sell out for this season for their future, the cheatriots are still going to make the playoffs and compete for superbowl. :-(

I need a break from work, so I'm going to say the first thing that comes into my mind for each Miami Dolphins year of existence.

1966 - Joe Auer running back opening kick off for a TD.

1967 - Dolphins draft Griese.

1968 - Dolphins have decent year. First year for Csonka and Kiick.

1969 - Dolphins fall back to woeful status.

1970 - DON SHULA!!!!

1971 - longest game ever played (Mia - K.C. playoff)

1972 - perfect season

1973 - Dolphins lose to Raiders in regular season to break winless streak

1974 - Cliff Branch falls down, gets up and runs for TD in playoff game. HOW ARE DOLPHINS SUPPOSED TO BEAT THE RAIDERS WHEN THE FANS ARE SO LOUD, AND RAIDERS ARE SO MEAN, AND THEIR HELMETS ARE SO SCARY???? (That's how I felt as a 7 year old).

1975 - So unfair! Dolphins miss the playoffs despite a 10-4 record.

1976 - Injuries decimate the Dolphins. First losing season of Shula's career.

1977 - see 1975

1978 - Earl Campbell destroys the Dolphins on Monday night.

1979 - Steelers destroy the Dolphins in the playoffs.

1980 - John Lennon assassinated as Dolphins play Patriots on Monday night.

1981 - Epic in Miami. Miami defense can't stop potent Air Coryell attack in OT. Miami secondary looks pathetic, girlish, terrible.

1982 - David Woodley puts together 3 straight games that would compare statistically (at least in terms of efficiency) with any 3 games EVER put together by a Miami QB (last regular season game against Colts, then first two playoff games against Pats and Chargers).

1983 - Marino to Duper! Unstoppable!

1984 - Marino to Duper and Clayton! Unstoppable!

1985 - The first real cracks appear. Miami can't stop anybody. Pathetic effort against Pats in AFC Championship game.

1986 - Frustration. Dolphins hobble to 8-8 record.

1987 - NFL strike.

1988 - 6 and 10??? Since when do Shula teams finish 6 and 10?

1989 - 4th year of futility. I'm crushed.

1990 - Rebirth! Where did the Dolphins defense come from? Statistically, they're near the top of the league as the all-of-a-sudden boring Dolphins win low scoring games and finish 12-4.

1991 - Friggin Jets beat the Dolphins the last game of the season and the Dolphins miss the playoffs. They didn't deserve it anyways. 8-8 is not a playoff record.

1992 - Dolphins start out 6 and 0. It seems they score TDs on their first two possessions in all their early games.

1993 - Devastating year. We lose our last 5 games to finish 9 and 7 and miss the playoffs. Marino misses huge chunk of season.

1994 - Rebirth for Marino! He leads the AFC in passing!

1995 - Shula's last year. Dolphins were world beaters to begin the season (4-0) and then exit the playoffs like meek little mice against the Bills.

1996 - Johnson's first year. We only finish 8-8, but at least we beat the Bills TWICE! FINALLY! A Dolphins team that can actually beat Marv Levy!

1997 - Johnson's always bitching about Marino. Dolphins are thoroughly mediocre - 9 and 7.

1998 - Miami beats Buffalo in the playoffs! Trace Armstrong forces a Doug Flutie fumble and we win!!!

1999 - Marino's last season. Dolphins are mediocre 9-7, BUT - we win our first road playoff game since the 1972 AFC Championship game against the Steelers. 27 years! That's a long time.

2000 - Hate Dave Wannestedt all you want - but we were a pretty impressive 11-5. Fiedler looked promising. Our running game looked good. We even beat Peyton Manning in the playoffs.

2001 - Again we're 11-5, but weaknesses are exposed in playoff loss to Baltimore.

2002 - Statistically we were great. Williams leads league in rushing. Fiedler had good stats. But we only finished 9-7.

2003 - 10 and 6, but no playoffs. We always collapse at the end of the season.

2004 - 4 and 12? 4 and 12??? Since when do the Dolphins finish 4 and 12????

2005 - Nick Saban. I'm told he's a genius. I'm told he's the second coming. I should learn not to believe so easily.

2006 - Saban lies, quits and Shula blasts him.

2007 - Cam Cameron has no testicles.

2008 - Chad Pennington! The man who throws like a girl is our savior!

2009 - Dodsworth/Cuban Menace start campaign for President.

Rob Teezy,

It only proves we're too old at both OLB positions and just plain average at all other defensive positions, though we do look promising at bothe corners. This just doesnt fly against top flight offenses, though we do have a top flight run game that gave us a chance to be at least 8-3 had we a defense to match.

Without top flight wr's we are not yet built for shootout offensive games. Even if we land a top flight wr, still we have to also get a stud olb or two, who really wreaks havoch in the passing game. If not, a top flight wr's may still only give us less than a 50% chance to win shootout offensives games. Because the D will still have the potential to give up points at a quicker rate than we can score them.

I would still see us scoring 38-42pts and still losing game. The key to beating prolific passing teams always has and always will be qb pressure, over how great the secondary is. Although quality of secondary is second most.

Armando, do you honestly think this coaching staff has the capability to create these kind of adjustments? And if they are, can the Fins players execute them? I'm not so sure in either case.

I so concur, I just wonder when what Mr. Parcells is thinking right now. He has been very quiet this year. Whats his role again in Miami? Does he even have a role anymore?

It's eally simple folks. All we want is to have our team spend more time performing because of our Coordinators and less time inspit of them.

There (The players) not only have to battle the opposing team but now they have to battle stupid coaching.....

this coaching doesn't trust the players;
they don't trust the OL

they don't trust the DL

HENNE stands on the side line while ricky play as a qb .

they call the time out like scared rabbits .

i call them THE DICTATOR REGIME .

CARLITO IS UP TO SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT WHICH IS;why there's no decent among the players about their playing time ?

i still believe no thing .

Some of you really dont seem to understand how truly aweful the entire roster was after 1-15. That cant be fixed in one season. I say one because even though we gained bragging rights with a premature afc east title, it totally devoured us in draft positioning in a 09 draft which wasnt very deep to begin with.

A team still nearly fresh off of 1-15, can not afford to draft from the 25th position in any draft, yet alone a very shallow one. You guys enjoyed your bragging rights after last season, so stop bashing the team and staff. Winning the afc prematurely was a double-edged sword. Unfortunately now we have to fall on it.

Just dont understand why anyone else cant see it when the facts lie right underneath every one's noses. Guess most of us are still blinded by that ole so premature afc east title. False pride really led you to think we are really that good. LOL

CARLITO MY DEAR FRIEND,

NJ IS VERY HAPPY NOW SO HE CAN TALK DRAFT ALL THE TIME AND GIVE US A MAJOR HEAD PAIN .

But i'am GOD , hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha !

DYING BREED,

YOUR POST IS SO DUMB FOR ONE REASON;

WHY ALL THAT MATTERS W/THREE SCREWED UP GAMES YOU SHOULD HAVE WON IF NOT FOR THE COACH MISTAKES ,COLTS,SAINTS AND THE BILLS .

THINK BREED THINK

Dying breed , good points on the pats-NO game ( No class and pats lack of it ) , miami needing to fix the defense before getting a wr and the lack of talent miami had after the 1-15 season. GOD as spoken !

BREED...YOU R A GOOD TEAM BUT WHEN THE COACH SCREW EVERY WEEK EVEN WHEN YOU R UP 24 POINTS ,THE CONFIDENCE OF THE PLAYERS VANISH .HENNE PLAYED WELL AND THE COACH MADE MISTAKES TO SEND BACK THE TEAM TO THE CAM CAMRON DAYS .

I AGREE W/PLUMBER

NJ, congratulations on your new promotion(GOD), you deserve it big guy...

Aloco,

Speaking of 3, let me say mice. One question, Where are your two blind siblings? Anyone with sight can see, we are in the position we're in almost solely because of our inability to stop anyone on pass defense. That comes out of inability to apply pressure to the opposing qb's when it matters most.

Then throw in missed tackles and key dropped passes, then sure..... we can place most of the blame on the coaches.(wink...wink...)

The real truth of the matter( what the blind cant see) is we just arent talented enough. But I dont expect you to "see" that. If a man's been blinded from life, through no fault of his own he has now idea what to have sight is like. LMFAO@ Aloco>>>>>........

Thanks to all , From GOD !

Dear Mr. Salguero

It has come to my recent attention that change is in the air.

"2009 - Dodsworth/Cuban Menace start campaign for President."

Is the Canadian/Cuban ticket looking for a spin doctor ?
If so I would like to throw my hat into the ring.

I love maple syrup and Cuban coffee.
Just not at the same time.

Soiled :)

I don't see why anyone should be bowing their heads right now at all. 2 years ago we were the worst team in football by a fair margin and now we are somewhere in the middle of the pack, that's progress. Maybe after this draft and free agency, they can move towards being in the top third of the league (i.e. top 11 team). Things will be ok.

BREED,

TALK ABOUT THE SAINTS GAME .....UP 23 POINTS AND YOU LOSE .

TALK ABOUT THE BILLS GAME ,,,,,,,UP BY 7 AND YOU LOSE BY 8 W/3 MINUTES LEFT .

THIS COACHING STAFF DOESN'T LET THE PLAYERS PLAY AND LET HENNE PLAY ENOUGH TO GET THE FEEL FOR THE GAME .

In my eyes, due to lack of talent, the coaching staff could be guilty of trying to control things a little to much. Which creates opportunities for them to make mistakes here and there. We're all human, even the best make numerous mistakes when exposing themselves too often.

Its just the cost of doing business when your team's not talented enough. As I said previously, Last season's "premature" afc east title did more to hurt us this season than help.

Caps:
A TEAM ONE SEASON REMOVED FROM 1-15 CAN NOT AFFORD TO DRAFT 25TH IN ANY DRAFT, LET ALONE A SHALLOW ONE!

WHY IS THIS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND???

Dear Mr. Mark in Toronto

Using common sense and logic has no place on a sports blog.

I have notified the proper authorities of your post.

You sir have been put on notice.

Soiled :)

Soiled, I would have to check with MR.Doddsworth but i do believe that we are currently talking to several possible people about being campaign manager, but i can almost guarentie a post in this admiunistration, possiblie secratary of state comes to mind, any who, thanks for your support sincerly Cuban Menace...........DODDSWORTH/MENACE 2016

To even have 3 players making significant contributions and getting significant playing time, when we drafted 25th in a watered down draft, is a major coup. Not to mention 2 others (White and Clemmons) that have seen the playing field. Not many teams drafting that far back in a weak draft can make those claims.

BREED,

YOUR TEAM IS TALENTED ENOUGH BUT THE COACH DOESN'T HELP WITH CONTROLLING EVRY PLAY LIKE SCARED RABBIT .IF YOU WON THE SANITS AND THE BILLS GAMES YOUR TEAM NOW WOULD BE IN FULL CONFIDENCE MODE BUT YOU YOU A DICTATOR FOR A COCAH THE RICKY WILL BE A QB AND PAT WHITE WOULD A 2 PICK SCREW UP AND RUN THE GAME OF FOOTBALL LIKE WILDCAT MY AZZZ

I HAVE TO GO TO BUY SOME GROUND BEEF TO MAKE SOME MEATBALLS .

ALOCO,

YOUR RIGHT! "YOUR" TEAM IS JUST AS TALENTED AS ANY SEEKING ANOTHER ONE AND DONE PLAYOFF APPEARANCE.

RESPECTIVELY YOURS,

ANOTHER QIUCKY.

PLEASE BREED DON'T WRITE IN CAPS.

WOW, X

THATS PROBABLY THE SAME THING YOUR ROACHES SAY WHEN TURN ON THE KITCHEN LIGHTS. IDO APOLOGIZE.

Put down the meatballs and step away from the computer.

Soiled :)

Thank you soiled ,liked them all though the last one might not be true, Mr. Doddsworth is from Canada you know and grew up in the swinging 80s so we might have to hold that last one out... again thanks for your support....

Mr Soiled Bottom. My response to that Aloco/menace post was WHAT ! Enough said.

Dear Mr. Menace

Is it true that your runningmate Nathaniel Dodsworth sports a 70's style mustashe and plays adult erotic music soundtrac's where ever he goes ?

Soiled :)

TRUE....He also wears bell-bottom slacks and wears really colorful shirts, and spent his collage years in Berkley where he graduated with a P.H.d in journalism after which he returned to Toronto,Canada where he wrote several articles on the abuse of sea lions at the local seaquarium..

Which of course he befriended several of the dolphins at the seaquarium, that's where he decided to root for the Miami Dolphins, strange how the world works huh...

What do you think the odds are the NFL channel will rebroadcast the pats/saints game ???? none whats so ever, you dont think the NFL well embarrass there flag-ship team do you??

cuban ,

you r on roll my friend .a question for you ....you know a lot about dodsworth ,how come ?did you ever meet him or lived next to him and know up close ?

soiled bottom ,i hear that mr nathaniel has a thick attractive MUSTACHE .

I Wonder if cuban has a MUSTACHE as beautiful ?

thinking of mustaches , THE NAME CARLITO FITS RIGHT THERE .i can see a pern w/mustache named carlito and mark in toronto sounds good w/mustache but soiled bottom nt so much .

Did you see Randy Moss last night he grew a moustache and beard it threw him off kilter.

LMFAO @ H8dpats on Moss comment

Dodsworth, you memory lane post was awesome. I too remember similar events like you mentioned. One thing that I think is very frustrating for us Fins fans. Many teams can say one of their greatest wins was vs us. We tend to choke when it counts the most. Hence Shula winningest coach, not so winningest in SB. How many heartbreaking playoff losses? 1985? was the worst for me I was there as Pats fans taunted us in our own house. They went on to get annihilated by the Bears.

Imagine if the dolphins had beaten the bill's..
what a game that would be this coming sunday
against the patriots.just imagine becouse thats
all we can do at this point.this coming game is praticaly meaningless right now.

Marc,

Your in need of glasses or a brain, as I said "the Dolphins collapsed all these years" not three. Go back and read the post and I never said three. Next time before you make some wise ass comment just for the sake of making a wise ass comment, make sure your reading the post correctly. I love how the ones who are so sure that they are right are always the ones that are 100% wrong. Then again maybe you just were not on your meds.

The problem that no one seems to be pointing out is that the team has not progressed over last year. Anyone could point to the 1-15 season and say, "Look, we're doing better than that, so that's progress." But where do we stand in comparison to LAST season? Certainly not as good or even better.

Some people point to the tougher schedule, but is that a valid excuse considering how the Dolphins have had a chance to win practically every contest? If the team is improving, isn't it a fair assumption to expect the record to be somewhere close to last year's performance even with a tougher schedule? I believe so, and therein lies the rub.

The sad fact is that this team is regressing from last year. With the exception of offensive line play and the running game, can anyone point to any area on this team that shows improvement over last year? I can't.

So, that is what concerns me. Although we're rebuilding, we should see steady progress from the previous year. That is to say, there should be some tangible aspects we can all point out that show promise. But that's not happening. I'm reminded of the Wannstedt era. Some initial improvement occurred followed by years of decline. Saban did the same thing, only more quickly. Is Sparano just more of the same? I certainly hope not, but the signs are not encouraging.
