Miami Dolphins: Playmakers wanted please

The 2010 Pro Bowl team will be selected Tuesday evening and the Dolphins aren't likely to fare exceedingly well in the selection process.

Jake Long will likely be recognized as he was last year, perhaps even starting as the AFC team's left tackle. So congratulations to him.

After that ... it's likely to be a tough sell getting much attention for Miami players.

Fullback Lousaka Polite might get some attention as a backup or alternate. Randy Starks might get some votes as an alternate but the fact is he's only got six sacks, and hasn't had one in the month of December as I noted in my column in Tuesday's Miami Herald.

Ricky Williams might also get an alternate spot but I don't see him beating out Chris Johnson or Thomas Jones or Maurice Jones-Drew to get on the Pro Bowl team as a starter or substitute.

I'll update you with the actual team later in the day.

As for what the lack of Miami players on that Pro Bowl team should tell you, it is this:

Despite the good job Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland have done restocking the Dolphins with talent, the job is not complete and perhaps not even half-way finished.

Why do I say this?

We start with playmakers. Quick, tell me who the playmakers on the Dolphins are this year. Tell me the players on either offense or defense that scare the opposing teams. Tell me what Miami players the Titans were talking about two weeks ago while all the talk in the Miami locker room was about Johnson and Vince Young.

Tell me what Miami player opposing coaches consistently worry about.

I don't know that Miami has any player that keeps other teams awake at night.

Joey Porter was such a player last season, but his 17 1/2 sacks were obviously an aberration and not what we have seen from Porter in either 2007 or 2009.

Jason Taylor used to be one of those sleep-robbing players but let's face it, the man is 35 years old now and his freakish ability to change the course of a game comes on much more rare occasions than it used to when he was younger.

Williams? He's a good player, no doubt about that. But he also is 32 years old and is talking openly about retiring after 2010. He was a game-changer in 2003, the guy a team could ride to much success. But he is a role player now.

Ted Ginn Jr.? Nope.

In fact no Miami pass-catcher is a game-changer.

Chad Henne? Not yet. Plus Parcells has to give the kid some weapons to work with.

The point is the Dolphins need to add a dynamo or two to the roster in the coming drafts or free agency because all the really good teams seem to have those kind of guys.

Fact is, even the mediocre teams seem to have those kind of guys. Houston has Andre Johnson. Pittsburgh has Troy Polamalu, Santonio Holmes and Ben Roethlisberger -- though Polamalu has been injured most of this season.

New England has Tom Brady and Randy Moss and Vince Wilfork.

The Jets have Kris Jenkins and Leon Washington.

New Orleans has Drew Brees and Darren Sharper.

Indy has Peyton Manning and Dallas Clark and Dwight Freeney and Reggie Wayne.

The point is most teams have somebody that scares the other team -- somebody that can make a game-defining play at any moment and does that so often as to make his team dangerous.

The Dolphins don't often get the 45-yard interception return for a touchdown, or the strip-sack-fumble recovery for a TD, or the 75-yard bomb for a score from a receiver, or the 48-yard laser down the seam to a tight end for a TD.

The Dolphins are a team that relies on seven five-yard runs, a 13-yard completion, two Lousaka Polite fourth-and-1 conversions, a nine-yard completion, and a wildcat run to score their TDs. Lightning? The Dolphins wait for it to come from the sky rather than their offensive huddle.

The defense, meanwhile, is also mostly solid. But Sean Smith doesn't have an interception and neither does free safety Gibril Wilson. Yeremiah Bell is solid at run-support and is dynamic at erasing the mistakes of other players by catching people from behind. But he isn't blowing up a ton of people in the secondary or causing a ton of turnovers.

Nobody on defense is doing that.

That is not an indictment on any of the players I just mentioned. They all serve a purpose and all have strengths. They all have value.

It's simply that Miami doesn't have a couple of players whose strength is to make play after play that change the course of games in Miami's favor. And those players and those plays have to come for the Dolphins to take more steps toward being a consistently good team.

Follow me on twitter. Or don't.

North Dallas forty was the best football movie.......

Can't say I've seen that one Cuban. have you seen We are Marshall? Gut wrenching.

dominick hixion will be a free agent....if you trade ginn(3rd round pick) you must pick up hixion for speedy wr need and vincent jackson for playmaking ability, to me thats the only way i was letting miami pass on keeping ginn was because of his speed, plus, true.. demeco ryans would love miami( and for the right price,he'd wanna marry it)to get the two thats just a super bonus, either one you must draft top notch wr(if you sign ryans and trade ginn and pick up hixion, but can't get vincent jackson)draft top notch lb(if you swap hixon and ginn and sing jackson and can't get ryans bottom line we need a playmaking WR and LB and a speedy wr that can catch and thats not ginn.

Yes Mark saw it great movie, North Dallas forty was a comedy/drama with nick nolte made in the late 70s check it out if you can it was good...

Brian' s song, Remember the Titians, FNL, Rudy, We are Marshall, Varsity Blues. In that order for me.

hixon can catch? before sundays game against the panthers he had 13 catches for 165 yards and a 61 yard touchdown. plus a return td. we have gotten more than that from ginn.

How about Knute Rockne:all-American, circa 1930s staring Ronald Reagan as "The Gipper"?? lol, Iam sure Nathanael Dodsworth has seen that movie...lol...

I wonder if Marc from Orlando will be at the U.M game tonite, and if he is I wonder what kind of dress he/she will be wearing??

Whichever one it is, you can be sure it won't be the same one he wears on Thursday to ring in the new year.

I hear he/she will be wearing a long pink strapless number from Saks 5th ave.. I hope he/she doesnt get to drunk someone might rape him/her.....

Though i understand you cant rape the willing though....lol

hahaha, oh man! That's good stuff. he could at least wear the colours of one of the two teams. You know, to show that he's behind them (or in front of them) all the way!

Pro Bowl teams have been announced

Jake Long is the lone Dolphins rep.

Somehow Alan Faneca made it. I'd like someone to explain this one

I don't think I have seen this much negativity and downright lack of vision concerning a football team in my whole life There is "Overseas fan" AKA "DyingBreed" AKA ??? AKA ??? who is ready to ship the entire team... To another guy who feels we need to dump our two rookie corners. The two brightest spots on the team. THEY ARE ROOKIES.... goof ball, they are learning how to play. We are fortunate that Will Allen went down and allowed the both (Smith & Davis) to start the entire rest of the season. Next year we have second year players at the posts... not Rookies + Will Allen and whom ever else may come in... It will make a difference. EVERY one of the NFL prognosticating guys have talked about the bright future of Smith & Davis. Want to know where we get burned? don't look to much farther then our safety's and our lack of pass rush. If a 3-4 defense lacks a STOP GAP nose tackle (we do) and two OLBs who can place massive pressure on the QB (like we don't) and a ILB staff who can keep a running game in front of them and tackle...(they don't) then any secondary or corner you place out there will get torched. We had to cover against some of the best receivers and QBs in the league and nearly beat ALL OF THEM... yet all I hear from crack heads like Dyingbreed/overseasfan/????? is to chop every pick and start a free agent frenzy... yeah... that worked real well with Wannstedt didn't it? Giving away 2 first round picks for a pot head running back really worked out well. I'm glad Ricky got it all together... but at what cost? Giving away picks and taking idiots like Fletcher over Drew Breese is why Miami is where it is. Follow some of the advice given on this page and we will be right back where we started. Be for real and ask if you REALLY thought Miami was going to make a run for it this season... Really? You REALLY THOUGHT THIS WAS OUR SEASON??? Come on maaaaan! A rebuild is what a rebuild is... The only thing for certain is it will take time and no one knows exactly how much... And taking the quick and easy way out of it just to satisfy impatient fans who would be happy with a "One and Done"... "Flash in the pan" sorry team. To me is the last thing those of us who have waited half our lives for a true winner to be built would want to see happen. Before you say this entire team is busted... better take a look at the losses and ask yourself if they were lost because the entire team needs replaced...again... or if Miami just needs to finish building a team that is solid at the fundamental core and lacking at skill positions. It is much easier to fill in skill then to build core. I saw Miami with the best receivers and QB in the league... and could not win the SB for lack of ability to run the ball and stop other teams from scoring. The building order is and always has been, Lines, QB, Linebackers, Secondary, Safeties and then Skill... that is the formula... skip a step and you will suffer in December and January. We have yet to answer the Linebacker spots... and it told on us BIG TIME at the most important part of the season... the December stretch. Its time to go back and fix that mistake. Do it while adding some fast strike weapons and Miami will look like a whole new team next year... then you will be wondering how you could have said what you did while feeling down about a season that went just as everyone knew it would.

I WONDER IF .................

TOM BRADY
RANDY MOSS
WELKER
WILFORK , WILL BE IN THE PRO BOWL

henne will be in that team

Derek in West....you might as well talk to the wall with some of these idiots...wasting ur time with Dying Halfwit, Marc and some of these others...Luckily Parcells and company could care less what they think and will continue to do the right thing while these bozos type on a blog

Bravo Derek! I feel exactly the same way! Good to see some positivity!

Hate the colts, No justice! Jets should not be in the position they are in.
Don’t think the Bengals have much to play for. No Justice NO PEACE!

Let’s burn New Jersey DOWN! Bengals lose Lets burn Cincinnati down!

I HATE THE COLTS!!!!!

Did I say that I hate the Colts?

Po White, if I'm not mistaken Bengals are playing for homefield vs Pats...so I think this game is important for them

I feel better now.

TOM BRADY IS BACK ,THE WHOLE NFL SCARED TO DEATH .

GO,

Non issue.

Jets Bombing is the only story here.

PO, I LOVE ISSUES

Jets are favoured by 10 so i don't think the bengals are playing for much. So sad.

WHAT Happened ?

how can the fins lose these games against colts, saints and last week in your own house ?

feeling in Vegas who make the Jets a 10 point favorite over the Bengals and Houston a 9 point favorite over the Patriots.

Hate life! Except for the Pats part.

the dolphins like gold ,keeps going down after last year 11-5

Satan takes care of his own.

We did our part beating the Jets!

What did the Pats do GO?

One more win GO, THATS ALL WE ASKED!

pats did just that.....AFC CHAMPS ONE MORE TIME BUT WE DON'T CARE FOR THAT LIKE YOU GUYS WHEN YOU WERE THA AFC CHAMPS ,YOU DIDN'T HAVE SEX FOR A MONTH .

Mark , Cuban menace is 100% correct. North Dalls Forty is the best football movie ever made . Check it out. i recommend it Highly. You'll love it. Get back me after you see it.

We ran Favre out of New Jersey!

Beat em twice Go and they are still in it.

Time for some personal Responsibility.

NOrth Dalls Forty one hell of a movie .great point nj as always .

Gopats , you da man. as always. :)

Be funny if the Pats lose to the Wets!

Can you imagine?

I can between the visits to the crapper puking.

PO;
IT'S NOT EASY TO BE LOVED AND HAVE INTEGRITY AT SAME TIME THERE FOR I RECOMMEND THE GOD FATHER MOVIE TO WATCH .

I AM SICK OF PEOPLE STILL TALKING THE GOD FATHER MOVIE .

Will have to check out North Dallas 40 now. Even have to get the book. I just got the blind side book, can't wait to get into that one.

Gold does keep going down, that being said, I have taken some of my short gold profits off the table. I can't believe the beating.

Just took a look at our current draft standing and did a little mock draft. I can almost guarantee that if we maintain our current slot and players hold their current standing, the Dolphins will have a shot at one of Derrick Morgan, Rolando McClain, Dez Bryant, and CJ Spiller. Personally I take Morgan if I have my pick of the lot. Seattle may be looking for a pass rusher though.

NJ LOVES WHEN HE SEES THE WORD ( ALWAYS ) IN A POST .SMART NJ BOY .

The Godfather was the best cinematic creation of all time. I may be biased since I grew up in Little Italy in Toronto and could relate more than most.

I'd rather (puke) see the (puke) pats win it (puke) all! before (Puke) the (Puke) (dry heave), Jets

Po is having convulsions. Hurts to say it but I think New England will be the AFC's representative in the Super Bowl in Miami. EWWWWWWWW!!!!

That thought might cause Po to have full body spasms.

Seen every Mob movie 15 times at least, Like Casino and GoodFellas the most. God father 1 & 2 are musts.

MARK, BRADY'S GROOVE COMING BACK AT THE RIGHT TIME .
WELKER.......MAMA MIA ...WHAT AN OUTSTANDING PRO FOOTBALL BLAYER AND GREAT HUMAN BEING .

PS....MARK,YOU SOUND AS IF YOU GREW UP ON MEATBALLS .

Say it aint so Mark! Say it aint so....

Go San Diego!

Mark , Ex-player John Matuszak ( RIP ) of the oakland raiders is F'N GREAT in the movie. Little italy in toronto is nothing compared to NY/NJ . Capiche !!!

The Bill Murray movie or the food? Hopefully not the ALoco diet if that's what you are insinuating.

New England is coming on strong. They really have every facet of the game going strong. The Pats and the Pack at the end is my call.

DIRTY DANCING WAS A CLASSIC

JHON TRAVOLTA SNLV IS A CLASSIC .

CASINO AND GOOD FELLS ARE JUST FOR THE HSN PEOPLE .I DON'T LIKE EITHER .

NJ, there were some badazzes around when I grew up. Toronto was so so but the hardcore crazies were in Montreal, Hamilton, and St. Catherines. St. Catherines is a nothing Ontario border town but a strong mob prescence because of the location.

Opinions are like a$s holes……

You know the rest.

Do like SNLV Though, Don't tell.

I see by most the post in here the internet age gave a lot of you idiots technology to keep up with your own kind! LOL

Thats not very nice DB.

Meatballs ? SPAZ ! SPAZ ! SPAZ !

No one watching the UM Wisconsin Game?

god night to all the nice fin fans .

Hope you make a $ GO.
