Miami's biggest problem on defense: LBs

I've been saying for two years now how badly the Dolphins need to upgrade at wide receiver. But knowing the folks that make the decisions about personnel in Miami, I've also been telling you the position that more likely will take priority this offseason in being addressed first is not wide receiver.

It likely will be the linebacker spot instead.

And rightly so, from what we're seeing lately.

The Dolphins linebacker corps is a nightmare right now.

Channing Crowder left Sunday's game -- as in bounced and was nowhere to be found afterward. He went home and is out for the season finale against Pittsburgh because of a foot injury, according to a source. The club is concerned he has a midfoot sprain or fracture that could mean a lisfranc, which is serious business. More will be known today.

[Update: Crowder is on crutches and wearning a boot today.]

That means Miami's linebacker corps against Pittsburgh will be Akin Ayodele and Reggie Torbor at inside linebacker and Joey Porter and Jason Taylor at OLB with Charlie Anderson and Quentin Moses as backup OLBs. Rookie J.D. Folsom, on the practice squad, may be added to the regular roster.

Help!

Ayodele has not had what I would call a good season. He is third on the team in tackles, but he's an ILB for goodness sake. He and Crowder should be leading the team in tackles. But alas, Crowder is often injured and both he and Ayodele over-run plays, or miss tackles or shoot the wrong gaps to the ballcarriers.

That's why Miami's leading tacklers are both safeties.

(Note to Dolphins: When your safeties are the leading tacklers, you have issues at ILB.)

The troubling thing is the Dolphins may be looking to upgrade at ILB this offseason after upgrading at ILB the past two seasons. Remember it was this administration that traded for Ayodele. It was this administration that signed Torbor as a free agent. It was this administration that re-signed Crowder to a new contract last offseason.

So if these guys aren't working out -- and they are not -- that is on this administration.

The Dolphins also have issues at OLB. Let's face it, Joey Porter, 33. shows up once every two or three games nowadays. He's not effective against the run and only gets to the quarterback when he's blocked by a tight end or running back. Put a tackle in front of him and he's stopped in his tracks.

The explosive first step Porter used to have is gone, be it because of his knee injuries or age.

Jason Taylor? He plays hard, but he's out of position. He is, at age 35, a part-time pass-rusher. He could be a latter day Trace Armstrong with 14 sacks as a specialist. But Miami's lack of talent at OLB pressed him into a starting role.

And so Taylor is doing grunt work on running downs when he should be chasing QBs on passing downs. That grunt work has Taylor playing with one shoulder the past three weeks or so. It has him getting close to but not quite to the QB. That half-second that has been sapped from Taylor because of an entire season's worth of collisions at the line of scrimmage is costing him sacks or strips of the ball.

And this just in: Taylor will not be getting younger next year.

So you want a big concern as the Dolphins transition after the regular-season finale to offseason mode?

Think of the linebacker position.

It was plain to see Sunday in the loss to Houston. It is a dire need.

ALoco, well I hope ur better at meatball subs then ur Dolphin analysis because ur in the super minority...They had this discussion on WQAM on two shows today...People that actually have played and covered the NFL for a living all agree talent wise, this years team is better PERIOD..If u want to go by record, be my guest...but with all the rookies and injuries and the schedule being what it was, this team held up fine and will be better because of it...enjoy ur sub I'm sure it tastes great but it will still clog ur arteries, just ask Urban Meyer

Aloco, Do you put Jalapenos on your subs???

Jalapenos are a must on a meatball sub. On my sub anyway.

Bobby12,.....i agree w/ most what you saying.look at mr peppers who makes i million dollars a game .he didn't do a bleep this year .big names don't mean any thing but still .if you look at new england when a player doesn't do well right a way the y cut him or trade hin w/no mercy .

that should the rule here to cut your losses .by cutting early you have the chance to get a better player .

WHO SAID THAT GARLIC BREAD SHOULD BE COOKED THIS WAY ?

My honest opinion is we need a lot more help on defense than we do on offense. Let's get a real #1 WR and all of a sudden, our offense is much better. We have 2 young TE's that are only going to get better in Joey Haynos and Anthony Fasano. Henne needs more weapons to work with, he's having his growing pains but he will get better. The o-line hasn't had a great season, considering how much $$ it cost to get it, but besides adding some depth, they will be fine. The defense, however, is an entire different story. Our run defense is average at best, we couldn't even stop the Texans at the end of the game when everybody knew they were going to run. That's how bad it is. Pririty #1: Get Linebackers. I was looking at both Brian Cushing and Connor Barwin yesterday and I was saying to myself: Damn, it would be nice to have those 2 in a Dolphin uniform. And linebackers who can play against the pass. Everybody throws against this dolphin pass defense, it's pathetic. I'm having nightmares of Louis Oliver, JB Brown and Michael Stewart getting torched by Jim Kelly, Andre Reed and James Lofton!!! Priority #2: D-Line. The only guy having a decent season is Randy Starks. Kendall Langford is OK, but that's it. Philip Merling, a late first round pick, is again OK but nothing special. In the middle, Ferguson was having a good season but can you rely on him for another season? He's getting hurt quite a bit, his body is not getting younger. Soliai has been OK, but the NT position in a 3-4 is so important, we need help there as well. Wilfork would be a pretty good free agent pick up. Priority #3: Secondary. We have 2 young corners in Sean Smith and Vontae Davis who gave up some big plays thus far but also show signs of getting better. Adding a veteran with a few years left in the tank would be nice, combined with the return of Will Allen. But the safety position is the main concern. We can't get rid of Gibril because by doing so, the cap hit will be a killer. I would let him battle Yeremiah Bell for the strong safety position next training camp because again, I've said this many times, he's more suited for it. Yeremiah hasn't had a very good year, TE's have eaten Yeremiah alive all year long. Let him compete to be a starter next year, don't hand it to him, he doesn't deserve it. We have a young guy who will turn out to be our starting free safety for many years to come, his name is Chris Clemons. Let him and Culver, who I think is very underrated, compete for the position and may the best guy win. It's good to have both of them anyway. 3/4 of our draft should be on defense. I'm not even sure Pasqualoni should stay, because with all due respect to him, this "D" often looks very confused on the field. But in his defense, they need a lot more talent, no question about it. And one more thing: Why did we release Matt Roth?? Was he that much worse than Joey Porter or Akin Adoleye?? Another questionable decision by this management who some fans seem to think they're the closest thing to God. Just remember one thing: We still haven't won a playoff game. And until we do, fans should question some pretty strange decisions. Signing Wilson, Wilford, Green, and also drafting Pat White and Patrick Turner, 2 wasted picks down the tubes, are several bad decisions by these guys. The jury is still out. That's all I have to say about it.

When Iam in miami visiting the parents a must stop to eat is The Big Cheese on 67 ave in south miami, The best meatball sub any where...

MARK,

MEATBALL SUB SHOULD TASTE NICE AND KIND OF CLEAN W/FRESH MOZZARELLA .NO GALIC TASTE OVER KILL OR JALAPENOS OTHER WISE IT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE HAVING DINNER IN JAIL CELL OR YOU R DRUNK .

Sorry about the previous post, I know it's kind of long. I'm still upset about yesterday I guess. LOL!!!

ANOTHER SEASON OF THE LOSER FISH TALKING ABOUT NEXT YEAR IN DECEMBER. WHAT ELSE IS NEW?

ELSEWHERE THE PATRIOTS ARE PREPARING FOR YET ANOTHER PLAYOFF PUSH AFTER YET ANOTHER DIVISION TITLE. YAWN. EVEN THE JETS ARE STILL PLAYING MEANINGFUL GAMES.

YOU GUYS ARE ABOUT AS RELEVANT AS THE JETS. FLUKE SEASON IN '08 OTHERWISE YOU HAVEN'T BEEN A FACTOR THIS DECADE PERIOD.

YOU HAVE NO SECONDARY. LBS SUCK. YOUR CAPTAINS ARE ALL OVER THE HILL (CP10, 55, 99, FERGUSON). JUST A PATHETIC FRANCHISE.

BUT KEEP ON CELEBRATING THAT 72 SEASON.

CJ Spiller would be an option for Miami for sure. He would bring that big play option, looks like the new Marshall Faulk.

IM SURE THERE IS A WILFORD OR WILSON IN THE ROUGH THAT YOUR BRILLIANT FAGTECTA WILL UNCOVER.

LIKEWISE, ANOTHER PAT WHITE HIDING IN THE DRAFT TO BE SCOOPED UP.

IM MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO SPARANOS BREAST AUGMENTATION THIS OFFSEASON.

LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR USELESS ROOKIES GETTING TAKEN TO SCHOOL YET ONE MORE TIME THIS WEEKEND.

STINKY FISH HAVE GIVEN UP MORE 30 YARD PLAYS THAN ANY OTHER TEAM IN THE LEAGUE. OHHHHHH YEAAAAA DAVIS AND SMITH ARE KEEPERS!!!!

Welcome to "5 Dollar FT. Long Stadium"

"You don't have the 5 Dollar?"

"You don't get the FT. LONG."

Snore.

Wish the Colt would of thrown our game.

Oh well every worm has its day.

Some one is not even worth trucker jokes,

Good night.

I said good night sr.

You guys are all Idiots. LOL

Breed, what do you like on your meatball sub???

Seriously, where is Carlito? This place seems a little different without Carlito around..

CARLITO got in arranged marriage w/ a girl from india .

Maybe out of town for the holidays with no internet access.

SHOCKING, Dying Idiot and Tortured Idiot both come in at the same time...all we need is the third stooge Marc and we would have an As'hole Tortured, acrossdresser Marc and a wimp as' coward Dying...actually Dying and Marc would make a great couple, Marc would wear both the dress and the pants in the family...well best to move on and let Tortured and Dying , who are the same person talk to each other...goodnight to the normal fans, I have no reason to waste my time unless these three want advice on how to commit suicide, that I would give them.

Just noticed this update:

[Update: Crowder is on crutches and wearning a boot today.]

Aside from having a MUCH tougher schedule this year, we did a 180 on injuries and turn-overs.. am surprised we've won 7 games.. I hope we win next week.. playoffs or not, I would rather not have a losing season..

I heard it was a Russian mail away hottie.

bobby12 has a lot of love in his heart, i envy the guy who sleeps next to him .

all i have to say is c.j SPILLER!!!!!

I bet the neighbors were jealous when they saw UPS deliver her

I'll buy that for a dollar!

spiller is the bigger clone of Chris Johnson and just as fast and shifty. and his teammate (wr) j. ford is also a playmaker that i havent seen on any draft boards yet. if he is in his draft the he is being very underrated.

R. I . P Carlito

and i think (DT) Cody (350lbs) from alabama might fall to the second round because of his weight issues, but miami already proved they can get a DT into shape with solia so i dont think that would be a problem if he comes to miami. that would be a big uprade at NT. and solia would be at least a great alternative when it comes to resting cody.

Anyone else want to beat the sh** out of tortured? I'm gettin tired of listening to this guy blabber on about nonsense.

the dolphins are going to get a big time free agent this off season so it all comes down to which position. at this time i would say WR because when it comes to rookies its the second hardest position to get into your prime behind qb. so it makes sense to take care of wr in free agency and the best player for miami right now is v. jackson because of his height, deep threat skills, age, athleticism, and most importantly he would be way cheaper than b. marshall.

Couldn't agree more! Great post Armando! And let's not forget how incredibly slow a foot our LB's are...holy cow they look like they are standing still. Compare that to the past when Zach ran everything down and covered most tight ends better than anything we have ever seen Bell or Wilson (forgive the comparison Zach wherevever you are)! Another note/request. Can someone please review/critique Lankford and Merling? They too were selected by this regime and I can't think of more than one or two plays that either of made rushing the passer this year...it's rediculous how "invisible" they have been. How do other GM's and or team rate them? Do we have to start over with more bigs on defensive as well?
