Dolphins 2010 starting QB has to be Henne

One of the most curious things about Black Monday at Dolphins camp, in my humble opinion, was the reticence regarding Chad Henne and his future as the Dolphins starting quarterback.

For perspective I remind you that one year ago when Miami's season ended, I asked coach Tony Sparano if Chad Pennington was his quarterback for the 2009 season. The question was pertinent because Henne had a season under his belt and because Pennington was coming off a four-interception performance against Baltimore in a playoff loss.

Sparano wasted zero time in responding by anointing Pennington the starter for 2009.

On Monday, someone asked the coach if he thinks he's found a future starter in Henne following a season in which the second-year player started 13 games. And this was the coach's reply:

"I haven't really discussed it yet," Sparano said. "I haven’t really looked at the whole body of work, as I told you. I have to sit back now and look at the entire body of work now and see what Chad did really well and what Chad didn’t do really well. But I am really pleased with what Chad did, I really am.

"I just think the guy did some outstanding things. Yesterday, whatever he was before he got hurt, 16 of 20 or something like that, I think [he] was in a really good rhythm yesterday in that game. More importantly, I thought he had his team prepared. Going out there yesterday, good week of practice, really upbeat they came out offensively and got in a pretty good rhythm. I think that says a lot about him. This guy he is a pretty curious guy. He likes to get better at the things he is not good at. I think they are all good qualities to have. I really like what I have seen in Chad right now."

Sparano likes what he's seen. But he doesn't like it so much as to give Henne his blessing as the 2010 starter.

What's going on here?

First, what is it exactly the Dolphins have to decipher about Henne, anyway? He's young. He's got much improving to do. He needs to improve his touch-passing. He needs to manage defenses with his eyes better. He's got to get quicker in reading the defense pre-snap.

But all those things have to come with playing time. And those things don't normally show up in a young quarterback's game until he's had 28-32 starts in the league. So Henne needs more playing time before we know if he will become a franchise quarterback or not.

But it's not like the Dolphins have many better options.

Pat White, the presumptive No. 2, looks like he can't lead a college team, much less an NFL one. Third-stringer Tyler Thigpen wasn't given much of an opportunity to unseat White so next year he suddenly becomes good enough to vault over Henne? And Pennington is still rehabilitating from his third shoulder surgery and is unsigned.

So do the Dolphins have to see if that secret cloning project of a 28-year-old Dan Marino is working before they name Henne the man?

Let's face it, the team is likely to draft a quarterback. That is simply wise business because Ron Wolf, the former Green Bay personnel savant and a Bill Parcells confidant, taught NFL teams long ago that backup QBs have a way of becoming golden insurance policies that can be exchanged for draft picks later on, so it it wise to draft one almost every year.

But what rookie is likely to beat out Henne in his first training camp?

So again, Henne is Miami's best choice for 2010. And furthermore, he deserves the opportunity.

He is a hard worker. You read from Sparano that he works at improving the deficiencies in his game. One expects improvement from him, particularly if the Dolphins surround him with better weapons. So I think the guy deserves to be the starter for 2010.

And Henne, bright as anyone in the locker room, agrees with me.

"Yeah," he told me. "I mean, I would say overall we started off well, getting off to a 7-3 start. Obviously the last three games wasn't the way we wanted to end it but hopefully I showed the coaches I have the capability of leading the team to wins and more in the future."

Two tests in judging QBs that Henne passed this year came in that led what was a less-than-mediocre team to a 7-6 record in his 13 starts. And I wouldn't say Henne was mostly at fault for those three season-ending losses. Not at all. So he passes the test that measures whether he can win or not.

He also passed another test on Dec. 6 against New England. Henne threw for over 335 yards with two touchdowns and one interception that day and outplayed Tom Brady in the process. The game, viewed in a vacuum, was a good moment for Henne. But viewed in the perspective that Henne had suffered a three-interception meltdown against Buffalo the week before, the comeback performance spoke of the kid's resilient nature and fighter's spirit.

Playing QB in the NFL is about talent, sure. But it's also about having brass, um, well, intestinal fortitude. Henne's recovery from the Buffalo loss showed me he's got the guts for the job.

Even if the Dolphins aren't ready to say so yet.

Could it be Sparano wants Thigpen and Henne to compete for starting QB? If the truth be told, Thigpen is a better QB than Henne and should have started once he learned the play book.

Henne will get better with experience. How much better, we don't know yet. But if the goal was to win games, you play the best player for the position. And that probably cost us some games.

One other thing, Thigpen would have been an asset at WC/spread formations. If you have seen film then you know he's had some sucess with it. But instead we got White. Just say'n.

band wagon--

I thought Sean Smith too...SSmith's Twitter addiction (and more importantly Twitter style & content) has been a beef of mine the second-half of the season since I looked at his site (AND 'followed thru' to his favorite Twitterers & Twitterettes).

Wannabe Gangsta bs, gaming & hustling 24/7, where when & how to party, etc.........the few times he does mention football it's 'I'm a stud baller,' 'that completion wasn't my fault,' 'ain't I a badass'type stuff ---and frankly there's not much football of even that variety. NEVER feels bad after a loss. Plus I've seen him immediately after practice talking about where he will party that night, and making fun of the idea that further study/prep might be needed.

I understand the whole 'he's a kid' 'twitter's a release & fun' arguments, but if anyone who feels I'm being harsh actually looked into his account, they'd be mortified.

For example, just about 15-20 minutes after Pittsburgh loss, he's on there hustlin' some babe & arguing about his bowling score with a fellow gamer.

Nothings sacred, 40 years of not letting Cuban products in has made this a safer world, stupidity never ends in the world of politics, ya know???

Revis is over rated. Ted Ginn Jr beat him by 3 steps for that 53 yard Touchdown, and we all know Ginn is no Randy Moss. Revis is no Dion Sanders.

True bobby, By the way, are you city of Miami or Metro-Dade???

Thanks Armando, after that game Ginn was poop!

I just dont understand why, he Ginn couldnt do that afterwards. I mean he had 3 people chasing him on that play. He was at least 10 yards ahead of them. Well, i am not sure wht Miami will do, you kind of have to wonder that keeping Ginn has some value. At least as return specialist. He does have a certain set of skills that miami will need to find. I do not want to see him go the New England and become a pro bowl player.

I hate the jets like cancer but the fact that Ginn beat him once on a bomb does not make Revis overrated. Even Sanders got beat every so often, as did Champ Bailey & Lester Hayes & Mark Haynes & whatever other oldie-goldie great CBs you can think of..........I'd take him on the Fins in a hearbeat.

McLovin, Will never happen, Ted has no Testicular fortitude. Dosnt matter where he ends up he'll still be Ted(No jock strap Required)Ginn...No sideline personnel are safe when teddy's on the field....

Henne is the starter. Everyone knows it. Sparano just wants to motivate the heck out of the kid this offseason. Henne looks to be great, but needs improvement in some areas. What better way to improve as much as possible in the offseason then to have the motivation that you could possibly be playing for your job. But let's be clear - Henne is the starter and everyone knows it. This is just part of the process.

emofinfan
right on!
i hope we trade him& #19. and his family

Henne lovers,

Assuming Pennington is healthy and has the weapons to work with and a complete training camp with the starters, he'd do better than Henne hands down. You can't believe that a rookie can be better than someone that was almost the Offensive Player of the Year in 2008.

The key question is does management feel Henne is ready? He could be (I'm not convinced yet), we'll see what happens next year.

# 19 & family---yes! But he has little or no trade value. His family has less.

Smith?---I'd rather he grew up & got serious about his job.....keeping fingers crossed on him.

Cuban, US Customs at MIA

TERRENCE CODY !!!

Oh a Federal, OK cool....

You're right about Henne being the quarterback of next year but the other article you wrote about no super bowl for Phins next year was more like frustrated venting more than a outlook for next year. You never know what can happen in a season much less next season. Who thought Pittsburgh wasn't going to make the playoffs before this season. Year before that Brady goes down and we win the division. In my opinion we're only a couple of players away from reaching the top level so lets keep some optimism.

Damn, more marks......

bobbyd12,

If you travel by cruise ship, it's easy to bring back Cohibas, Montecristos, whatever. They don't x ray departing lugage.

EmoFinFan
what about the we are going to be a tough team,a team no one wants to play against?
4quarter collapses
cant hold a lead.
do you remember a game changing hit by anyone this season?
i surely dont.

Rex Ryan "no one in this locker room ever doubted we could make the playoffs" Really??? Rex Ryan 2 weeks earlier "we're done! Its over! No chance of making the playoffs" what a dumb ass. He's such an idiot. Jets dont deserve to be in the playoffs. Guess we'd be there too if the Steelers & Texans rested their starters too. Can't wait to see them lose this weekend.

HENNE IS NOT THE QUARTERBACK OF THE FUTURE! HE IS NOT A GOOD LEADER! HE HAD MORE INTS THAN TDS! WE NEED A REAL QB!

Phinatic, Absolutely right, The Jets lucked into the play-offs by having 2 "Bye" weeks in the final 2 weeks, I Predicted a Bengals win this week-end 24 to 10 vs the jets....

not one..........Houston (Arian Foster!?) & Pittsburgh ground us up when their teams needed long, time consuming drives.

We need LBs badly.....

and I wonder about the 3-4 when Fergie's out & we don't havre a stud NT.....Soliai ain't it---single teamed the bulk of the time.

If we can't come up w/ some Grade-A+ ILBs or NT, the Trifecta MUST re-think the 3-4.

A poster earlier recomended patience. Why is this so difficult? This is an incomplete team that needs to excel in the draft, develop the youngsters, and teach them what it takes to win in this league. All this takes time. It does not happen in one or two offseasons.

Miami has made sure to keep as many picks as possible. They are doing what needs to be done. They will miss on some draft picks. It is guaranteed.

As far as free agent signings, remember you are signing players usually on the downside of their careers, or players other teams believe are not good enough. Therefore, most are not going to pan out the way you hope.

This is the NFL of today. It is quite difficult to build a quality team in a short time. Look at how many of last years playoff teams regressed this year.

The front office needs time and our patience. They also need growth from within. That is why you do not name starters the day after the season ends. Henne has some improvements to make. Now it is on him to work to make them. The same can be said for many others on the roster.

Good points. Kid deserves a fair shot to develop. Put weapons around him in draft/fa and see what he can do with an offseason+another season. Henne was one of the stronger players/parts of the team IMO so improve at other positions FIRST and hennes resulting play will determine if he's got what it takes :P

Henne is the future. Give the guy a chance. He hasn't even started a full season yet. Plus he has no #1 reciever geez, just look at his recieving core. Most of them have 3 yrs or less experience. Stop being so quick to judge him. Qbs usually need at least 3-4 yrs before you can determine their worth.

oliver rubber - do you know Manning had more INT's in his first 3-4 years than any QB in the history of the game...??

Ok smart guy, let us go to the good QB tree and pluck one. Where do you propose we get one? In free agency our options would be guys like Kyle Orton, Jason Campbell, Derek Anderson. Or we could draft one. Let's just say we draft one with the 12th pick and we start him and he has 12 picks, 14 int's...then what draft another again after that? Manning had 28 picks his first year, so did Flacco last year. Most QB's take a few years. There was a reason San Diego drafted Rivers, they did not believe Brees was getting it done. He turned out ok after a couple of "off" years. Henne will be fine.

People talk about Henne how he has to fire the ball all the time, could you emagine if PENNINGTON had to make some of those throws in some of those late games, no way not with his weak arm,Henne will learn the touch pass, PENNINGTON does not have a fast ball anymore,JUST say in nice to have something extra when you need it.

Cuban your right! Jets had 3 bye weeks this season lol.

The NFL should take action against the Bengals, and Colts but I dought that will happen....

Henne will be the hero of the Dolphins franchise of this next decade...

Get this man some weapons

HP IN PA........SANCHEZ HAD 20 INTERCEPTIONS AND HE'S IN THE PLAYOFFS MR .

I hope The Colts lay a big egg in 13 days seeing how there starters have been resting for a month....

CARLITO,

I HAVE A NEW RESPECT FOR YOU SINCE LAST Nite OF YOU STATING HOW GOOD ......OXTAIL IS .

Aloco,

This is comfort food that is like pot roast, but much better. Maybe if Ted Ginn and Pat White can meet a nice Caribbean woman to make them things like oxtail and whole snapper with rice and beans they could be stronger and respectable football players.

Henne is no good without a legit WR folks. That bomb to Ginn (called back) should be something that is routine by now. HOWEVER, its usually by accident that Ginn gets open. Defender falls down or broken coverage type stuff.

We need a WR that can get off the line, make a move, and get OPEN on a routine basis.

Wow just heard on 1050 that the jets are adding some new wrinkles to the wildcat. Hey Rex!!! I thought those plays are just gimmicks??? Hey Calvin Pace... Guess u can't respect your offense running gimmick play huh?

==============================================

And did you know the Mannings have TWICE as many superbowls as our last 10 QB's combined.

Do we need to buy this app again for the 2010 season again Armando lol

another gem from CARLITO...........BAKED ROASTED WHOLE SNAPPER .

PS...ROAST WHOLE FISH LIKE SEA BASS OR TROUT IS THE BEST FOOD W/RICE AS THE MASTER SAID .

PS 2.....I AM NOT SAYING THAT A WOMEN HAS TO COOK ALL DAY AND SMELLS GARLIC WHEN SHE COMES TO BED .IT'S A FINE LINE HAS TO BE KEPT .SHE HAS TO BE CREATIVE IN BED AS WELL .

HP IN PA........SANCHEZ HAD 20 INTERCEPTIONS AND HE'S IN THE PLAYOFFS MR .

What is your point? Jets made the playoffs in spite of Sanchez rather than because of him. They have the #1 run game and #1 defense. If they would have had a veteran QB they would have won 11-12 games instead of squeaking in. Would you rather have Sanchez or Henne?

Marvin Harrison and Jerry Rice - Got off the line, made a move, then got open.

T.O. and MOSS - Got off the line, made a move, then got open or went UP AND GOT THE BALL.

Wes Welker - simply gets open all the darned time.

Three types of prototypical WR in the NFL I just presented to you guys. WE DON'T HAVE ANY OF THAT! Not one of our receivers can do any of that on a consistent basis. I'm not talking every play. I'm talking every 3rd play maybe! They can't do it every game. Not ONE can be a consistent playmaker every game.

Aloco, Where can i buy the "Aloco Cookbook"??? is it on sale at Boarders????

HP..... SO YOU SAYING THE JETS IS A BETTER TEAM THAN FINS .WHO EVER TAKES YOUR TEAM TO A PLAYOFF RUN I PICK .

WHO CARES WHO'S BETTER ...MARINO WAS GREAT BUT NEVER WON ANY THING .YOU GO TO PLAYOFFS W/A TEAM NOT W/ ONE GUY .

I'm shocked that afew people want to give up on Henne already. If the Dolphins gave up on every player after starting just 13 games, they'd never get anywhere. Henne may not be the next Marino, but he's shown alot of potential and certainly deserves to start for this team next year. I just hope Parcells and Sparano get him an elite WR,either in a trade or an early draft pick.

Or Barnes and Nobles???

MARK HAS VERY GOOD AND GREAT POINT OF GIVING UP ON GOOD PLAYERS EARLY .

Ok ALoco OR AAPLE IN PA if you think Sanchez is a better QB than Henne your crazy. Henne had more yards and less INT's with more pressure on him to perform. He is also cool under pressure unlike Sanchez. Under your theory of taking the QB that takes them to the superbowl guys like T.Dilfer and Brad Johnson are better than Dan Marino, Drew Brees, Warren Moon, etc. You make no sense.

Dolphins fans named all of their children Mark after Duper and Clayton. Some of these parents could not spell (Marc).

Anyone who says Henne is not a good QB is either starting trouble or is just so Fuc'ing stupid that they shouldn't even be on a football blog...Kid comes in after an injury to the starter and did a real good job...Peyton Manning had a worse record then Henne in his rookie year and I bet not one INTELLIGENT fan called for him to be benched because they saw the incredible potential, just like Henne has the potential...So if ur really that stupid to call for another QB after not even a full rookie season you don't deseve any respect

I can only hope that in a few years time, we are seeing people like "Anquan in Toronto" , "Anquan R.", "Anquan in NJ", and from the slow parents "Ankwan"

LOL At Carlito's post... Classic my friend from C.R.

Henne will be the starter next year, they just don't want to stroke his ego and watch him become complacent in the off season. Remember, this regime is all about competition. They want even their star players to be pushed by the guys behind them on the depth chart.
I remember after Romo's first year starting in Dallas, Parcells warned him about the pitfalls of being a star quarterback, and then watched as Romo dated carrie underwood and jessica simpson and fell apart when it counted. Obviously that is not going to happen with Chad Henne, but you can understand the logic here.

I thought Tampafin had a really nice assessment of the draft at this time. You have to try to get McClain or Morgan. If you can't then trade down and select Williams.

Plenty of similar OLBs in rounds 2 and 3 to choose from if they can't get Morgan.

If they can't get McClain then they have to get Spikes or pay for Dansby in free agency.

If they don't get Dan Williams or Terrence Cody, they have to pay big for Wilfork which I think should be plan A anyway for the NT position.

I AGREE W/HP ON YOUR LAST POST.I DON'T KNOW AS YOU KNOW BUT I AM W/YOU NOW THE WAY YOU LOOK AT A QB .I HOPE WE AGREE THAT THE FINS GOT TO BUILD A REAL DEFENSE AROUND HIM FREE OF THE WILSONES AND CROWDERS OF THE WORLD .

Carlito, I was hoping more for Idiot from Indiana, Moron from Michigan, names such as that...that way u could completly skip the post before having to waste time by reading a moronic comment such as "fire Parcells" and bring in Cowher or "Henne is not a good QB"...this would save intelligent and real fans lots of time

Well said bobbyd12

Also, alot of Henne's interceptions this season was'nt even his fault. Many of them were either a WR not running the correct route or the RB would flip the ball in the air resulting in a easy pick or even the offensive line not giving him enough time to find anyone open. Henne certainly has'nt been great but he will get there only if we give him a chance and some credit...

Carlito, funny stuff but I'm actually named after a singer. A little too old to be named after the Marks Bros. I saw them play.
