Josh Cribbs, sure, but at what price?

The Miami Dolphins talked to the Cleveland Browns about Joshua Cribbs last season -- once for sure in the days and weeks before the October trade deadline and perhaps once another time much earlier.

Obviously the Browns, which traded away talent like it was going out of style, didn't budge on trading Cribbs. But all that may change now.

The Browns have a new football czar in Mike Holmgren and apparently Cribbs and his agent have gotten the message that a new contract is not in the immediate offing for perhaps the most outstanding and electric return man in the NFL.

So Cribbs believes he's played his final game in Cleveland. "Thanks everyone," Cribbs wrote this week on his twitter feed. "I love playing for the browns (sic) & put my all in to (sic) it, but it doesn't look good 4me(sic)  at this point on (sic) returning. I don't believe I made the to do list for the team in 2010."

Why does Cribbs believe he's gone? Because on-going negotiations yielded an offer from Cleveland that would have paid him approximately $1.4 million per season over the next six years with approximately $400,000 to sign. I must say that's a lowball offer.

And Cribbs agrees. "I'm sorry guys," he said. "I don't want to seem greedy but fair is fair and there is no way around that. I'm the best at what I do but the lowest paid ..."

So Cribbs intends to request a trade on the first day of the new league year and hold out if he doesn't get one.

"We’re going to formally put in a request for a trade,” agent J.R. Rickert told NFL.com. “He will not set foot in that facility again. If they had offered even something like $2.5 million per season we could have worked with them, but to me this offer is indefensible."

The fact of the matter is this is Mike Holmgren's first contract squabble in Cleveland. I doubt he wants to lose it. The fact is Cribbs is over-performing on a contract that has three years remaining. The fact is both sides have good leverage.

So don't be surprised if the Browns try to turn this mess into a draft pick with which Holmgren can bring in "his guy."

Enter the Miami Dolphins.

As we know, they need dynamic playmakers because there are precious few of those on the team. They could stand an upgrade at punt returner and kick returner. They could also use Cribbs in the Wildcat package, which he ran quite effectively in Cleveland. He averaged 6.9 yards per rush in 2009.

Oh, and did I mention Cribbs took snaps as a wide receiver also? He caught a modest 20 passes for 135 yards but obviously that is not his primary value.

His primary value is special teams. He returned three kickoffs and a punt for touchdowns this season. He has 10 return TDs in five seasons.

The downside is the guy does fumble. He had six fumbles in 2009 while fulfilling all his various duties. For perspective, you should know Davone Bess led the Dolphins with six fumbles in 2009.

So should the Dolphins be interested in Cribbs? Of course, they would be. But would they pull the trigger on a trade that would also involve paying the guy a new contract? That another matter.

If all Cribbs wants is $2.5 million per year, you should know the Dolphins are paying Ted Ginn Jr. an average of $3.5 million per year. Which is the better player?

And if the Browns are asking a second- or third-round pick for Cribbs, it probably sounds like an exceedingly high price to pay. But I remind you second- and third-round picks don't always turn into good players.

The Dolphins spent a second round pick on Pat White last year. They also spent a third round pick on Patrick Turner. Neither contributed very much, if at all, in 2009.

So what would you do?

First..... NO trading pics away

Trade Ginn with perhaps a lower pick for Cribbs IF Miami also intends to sign a big-time receiver like a Brandon Marshall at some point

ditto the above, IF the Browns would go for it, but doubt they would

didn't know you are hamor gadol

forget Marshall....go for JACKSON from SD...save the picks for that trade

J. Cribbs good player but i wouldn't give up a high draft pick for a special teams player, we already did that with Cam and it failed forward fast. We have other areas of need at this time.

Hey Jed, maybe if they throw in Patrick Turner with Ginn they will give up Cribbs and a draft pick in return.

People need to realize that no one is going to trade the Dolphins anything of value for Ginn. He was a wasted pick, just like so many other 1st round selections over the last 10 or so years.

Word of caution, these return guys tend to spark and then fade quickly, anyone remember when Dante Hall was greatness? Or Ted Ginn for that one week against the Jets?

OK guys...I have to interject...I can't take it anymore. Forget Marshall and forget Vincent Jackson and forget a WR in the first round. I would love to see Jackson or Marshall as much as anyone but, IT WILL NOT HAPPEN. I will start a paypal account and anyone who disagrees can bet me...LB in the first Rd...Bank on it.

This is no brainer! Please trade away picks, the only one of our players from last 2 drafts I would not trade for Cribbs would be long. White was a BRUTAL pick, Turner was BRUTAL, Smith is OK, Davis is OK. Come on pull the trigger!

I'd offer Tedd Ginn and 2 of our 6 round picks seeing as he's almost the same player just not as consistant, no more, if I were going to spend a 2nd round pick it would be to get V Jackson or B Marshall!

How about a 3rd and ginn ?

Get him!! Perfect for Henning & Co.offense. Highly Motivated Self-starter &talented to boot!

Ginn + a reasonable pick, or whatever...here's where holding onto Matt Roth maight have helped, since he was on Cleveland radar (at least pre-Holmgren) & could have been part of trade.

Cribbs BLEONGS here.....I was upset we didn't get him right at trade deadline.

BELONGS.............sheesh!

Josh Cribbs would definitely be an upgrade of Ted Ginn because he is more versatile and will stay in bounds. However, I would not send anything higher than a 3rd round pick for him.
As far as Pat White goes, lay off of the guy. He is as raw as they come. I like his skill set and if given time to develop, he will be a nice weapon for 6-10 plays per game. It's all about how you use a player in this league. Play to his strengths.

No more than a third rounder for him. Need I remind everyone that we already have blown TWO first rounders on guys who play special teams.

Trade Ginn for Cribbs straight up

No trading any of the top 3 picks for a player. As average as the offense and special teams were, our defense was bad and we won't win anything until we infuse a lot more talent there. This defense needs about 4 VERY good players in order to be good. That's way too many to be spending a good pick on a gadget player. They already spent a 2nd on one it hasn't worked very well at all - that's enough!

The Dolphins seem to be good at finding talent in the draft, not in FA or via trades. Give away no draft picks unless it is for their biggest need WR. Boldin would be worth a draft pick but there are WR in FA. We need to go get one. If we got cribbs, we would still need a big receiver, who do we cut?

NO picks guys!! that's what the previous regimes did and it killed us!! I thought one of the strengths of the trifecta was they were good talent evaluators. If that's the case, do NOT trade any picks. They can have Ginn. I'm not sold on White and based on what I saw this year, it looks like a lousy pick. He was brought in to mix things up and to help run the Wildcat. It may yet come from this guy but I didn't see it this year. If we get Cribbs, with Ronnie already here, White becomes redundant. So I'm pretty sure I would look at offering them Ginn and White. Cribbs would be a great addition for the 'Phins.

Unless Cribbs is a receiver that could have made the catch that Ginn missed during the indy game and/or New Orlean game then he's not worth any picks or that much money

Wow, everyone who is saying trade ginn and a pick for cribbs, please think things through. If the Browns don't want to pay cribbs 2.5 mil a year, why would they take ginn for 3.5 mil a year? They are not that dumb.

Personally, no way...trading draft picks for a player who is a majority special team player when we have priority defense and WR deficincies is not the way to go...Since Parcells is not a trade away draft picks type of guy, I don't believe it will happen...Now if u want to tade Ginn for Cribbs straight up to give both players a fresh start....

Erm, why would the Dolphins trade for Cribbs when then already have one of the better kick returners in the NFL?

Guys, I cannot get excited about this. The Dolphins have other, more pressing issues than an upgrade at KR. And they have more than enough playmakers in the Wildcat.

HvK:

Please stop trying to insert logic into our deliberations!

In other words, damn fine point.

HvK, not so dumb if u can play if Clevland believes Ginn is capable of being an effective receiver AND kickoff returner in their system

marshall is a fa retards. Jesus so V jackson restricted sure. Look you go after Marshall period. You acquire Wilfork in FA, trade porter, Camarillo, and a second or third for Marshall. Then you use your first round pick on best MLB, or S in draft. Then if you want you trade a 4th, Ginn, and Turner for Cribbs.

I do not agree with trading Ginn for Cribbs. Ginn has more talent and better speed is a way better receiver.

trade ginn and porter to cleveland for cribbs and a late rounder like a sixth!

trade ginn porter and 6th round pick to browns for cribbs!

anyone think if we draft or trade a great WR and keep Ginn he may actually perform better cause he would be lessed covered?

Don't trade anything better than a 4th rounder. I would say a 5th-7th with a player. Who could that player be? I have no clue. We have many options. One of our WR's, one of our LB's if we are going to draft some stud LB's or get one in free agency. If they want him Parcell's will make it happen...

Quinn to Ginn ..... OH the irony!

Armando Dolphins signed two CFL's players ( WR ex Bees mate and a FB) this is the end for GInn???

How about trading all these lame ideas for a decent post?

marc. you are right about v. jackson, the chargers will either resign him or franchise him. i think you are VERY wrong about marshall. he will be dealt somewhere. no question. the price will be high but also worth the high price. he could be on that same level and a. johnson and l. fitz. with his size, speed and hands he would make henne an all-pro caliber qb. imagine him on the right, hartline on the left and bess where he can do the most damage, in the slot. you think defenses will stack 8 in the box? i think not. marshall is easily worth our 2nd round pick. could we get a receiver close to his level at 12th in the first? i think we could even sign him for less than what the 12th pick would get!! he is one of the very few game changers that can be gotten through FA or the draft!! henne is perfect QB for him. throws the fastball so he can catch it and run. he's the perfect WR for henne for the same reason!!

Armando - What is the history with Holmgreen and Parcells? Do they like each other or worked together? If they are any type of close friends to each other that may help us. I believe Cribbs would be a great asset to our team. If we do get him Patrick Cobbs is gone I believe. Cribbs as the motion guy in the Wildcat with Ricky and Ronnie!! Our special teams would be better. Putting Cribbs and Ginn on kickoffs, so you have 2 weapons they have to kcik too. Cribbs on punt returns though...

Any thoughts?

MOVE GINN TO FS CANT BE ANYWORSE THEN G. WILSON. TRADE WHITE, TURNER, AND SOME OTHER PRACTICE SQUAD BUMS 2-4 OF THEM AND MAYBE A 7TH ROUND PICK FOR CRIBBS. NOW WE DONT HAVE TO SWEAT THE FS POSITION BECAUSE GINN STILL HAS VALUE IN THE RETURN GAME AND SPEED. AS A FS HE WOULD NOT HAVE TO CATCH THE BALL JUST BAT IT AWAY. ONLY DRAW BACK TO THIS IS HE IS A WUSSY AND PROBALY WOULD NOT TACKLE ANYONE. PS. WHO EVER THINKS PAT WHITE WHITE WAS A GOOD PICK OR HAS POTENTIONAL IN THE NFL IS CLEARLY A NON FOOTBALL RETARD AND DOES NOT KNOW TALANT. JUST BECAUSE HE WAS GOOD AT WV(NOW NOT IN A GREAT DIVISION (ACC)) DOESNT MEAN HE WILL BE GOOD IN THE NFL. WAY WAY WAY WAY TOO TOO TOO TOO FRAGILE AND SMALL. BUT GO GET V. JACKSON AND B. MARSHELL (YES SPEND SOME MONEY PLEASE) AND ALL THIS WILL ALLOW US TO GET THE PERSONAL WE NEED ON THE TEAM. NT, OLB, ILB, SS, FS( BACK UP) MLB (CROWDER STILL SUCKS) AND TE, RB. THERE IS MY CHOICE OF DRAFT PICKS. PEACE OUT DOLFANS!!! OUR TEAM IS STILL THE BEST! PERIOD!!!

Yeah...Armando What is up with signing more CFL players? What sense does it make?

Sure Ginn has more talent, more speed but has worn out his welcome here...he wasn't a Parcells pick, heads straight to the sidelines on kickoffs and isn't a quality number one receiver...I've been saying I would like to see how Ginn would do with a true number one receiver on the other side, but I'm certainly in the minority...the Ginn experiment is probaly over for Miami, get the best deal we can for him

Look first thing is first. Vince Wilfork, as soon as the Patsies lose. Ok good we got him to a 4 year deal we set at NT. Then we trade Porter, and a 2nd for Marshall, you could also throw in Camarillo. THEN we dont trade for Cribbs, because why? Anyways, we have now taking care of our two biggest needs VIA FA, AND TRADE. So with installed we now look to draft for MLB, AND S. then we use alot of picks three in the sixth round, and two in seventh to turn over rocks, and add depth everywhere. Next year we are beast, and lovin life. Thank you ill be here all night..

TRICKY - Do you realize if we get Jakson and Marshall we would have to TRADE to get those players..?? We are not going to give up that much for both those guys. Get out of your fantasy world. If we did do that we would have NO picks this year and still have a bad defense...Get real kid!!

Josh - I would rather have Jackson than Marshall. Marshall is a lot like Cutler, a cry baby little B!T(H who only hurts a team...

Tricky, hard to take anyone serious who types in all CAPS...and 2. If you were a Dolphin fan you would know that it was Parcells who loves Pat White and wanted that pick...mistakes are made by even the best, but I'm pretty sure Bill Parcells has a little better record at seeing talent in the NFL then YOU

What WR did we pick up from CFL?

I say get him. I love cribbs. Versatile and doesnt look to go out of bounds. I say trade for a third, not a second. Maybe the browns would take a 4th and a player?

Jaison...I'm not saying Marshall isn't worth it...I'd sell the farm for him...What I'm saying is IT WON'T HAPPEN! Once again, any takers that wanna wager let me know

some of you are really making dumb points! these trade ideas are dumb!! no one is going to trade a top guy for ginn. we'd e lucky to get a 5th rounder for ginn. if you want a premiere guy you have to pay!! cribs would be nice because he is so versatile, but brandon marshall is the guy IF we are going to trade picks!! he will be danged out there before FA begins. he will be signed in some way by the broncos and then traded. bottom line he will be available!! yes, giving up picks suck. but tell me this. can we get anyone in the draft that we can be almost positive is as can't miss as marshall with any pick?? i hear dez white, who may not be there at 12. is he even as sure a playmaker in the NFL as marshall?? marshall in not much older than a rookie. i think you could sign him for about what a rookie like harvin got. marshall is better than harvin even with kyle orton throwing to him!! maybe it won't even take our 1st pick. maybe a 2nd and 5th?? could we get 2 guys with those picks that would have the same impact as marshall?? highl doubtful!!

bobbyd12 - Very nice!!

Parcells liked Pat White and Quincy Carter...

Get. Josh. Cribbs. That's what you do.

GOOD GOD ITS NOT DIFICULT YOU TRADE WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET MARSHALL, SD IS NOT GETTING RID OF JACKSON SO STOP IT!!! HE WILL BE TAGGED!!! NOW MARSHALL IS BUTTING HEADS WITH A 32 COCKY LITTLE... BS HEAD COACH IN MCFAGELS, I WOULD HATE HIM TOO. SO WE TAKE THE UNHAPPY WR WHO IS A BEAST, AND MAKE HIM A WINNER, BECAUSE EVERYONE HAS RESPECT FOR THE ITALION ACCENT. NOW WE GO AFTER VINCE WILFORK IN FA, WITH THAT SAID!!! YOU STILL LISTENING WE WOULD HAVE SHORED UP OUR TWO BIGGEST NEEDS, AND STILL HAVE THE ABILITY TO PICK UP ONE HECK OF A S, OR MLB IN FIRST ROUND. Good GOD PEOPLE GET YOUR HEAD'S OUT OF YOUR REARS, AND OPEN YOUR EARS.!!!!

If I was parcells or Ireland I would be on the phone innediately with Cleveland and offer a third round and ginn with a package In return for cribbs. Gotta make this work because it may be our only chance this off season

Italian. God i cant spell.

For what to run back kicks when our offense and defense have so many holes ur crazy.

The Dolphins have signed fullback Rolly Lumbala wide receiver/returner Ryan Grice-Mullen to a two-year contracts, according to the Toronto Globe

You want Brandon Marshall at all costs and you are telling us to get our heads out of our rears?

The Dolphins have signed fullback Rolly Lumbala wide receiver/returner Ryan Grice-Mullen to a two-year contracts, according to the Toronto Globe both from CFL British Columbia Lions

WHO ELSE YOU GOING TO GET? LAST TIME I CHECKED HE KICKED BUTT IN PLAYING, DEMANDS DOUBLE TEAM, WHICH WOULD LET OUR OTHER WR'S BECOME GODLY, AND WHAT YOU DONT WANT HIM, BECUASE HE IS IMATURE???????????/ WHO ELSE YOU GOING TO TRADE FOR, SURE ILL TAKE CALVIN JOHNSON, JACKSOIN? YOU GOING TO GIVE UP THE ENTIRE HOUSE FOR ONE OF THOUGHS???? OR GIVE UP LESS FOR THE SAME TALENT, IN MARSHALL????

Thanks Elchano didn't hear about the WR

SHUT UP YOUR WRONG, WRONG WRONG, PERIOD. GETTING WILFORK IN FA, TRADING FOR MARSHALL, AND PICKING UP S, OR MLB IN FIRST ROUND IS RIGHT.
