Josh Cribbs, sure, but at what price?

The Miami Dolphins talked to the Cleveland Browns about Joshua Cribbs last season -- once for sure in the days and weeks before the October trade deadline and perhaps once another time much earlier.

Obviously the Browns, which traded away talent like it was going out of style, didn't budge on trading Cribbs. But all that may change now.

The Browns have a new football czar in Mike Holmgren and apparently Cribbs and his agent have gotten the message that a new contract is not in the immediate offing for perhaps the most outstanding and electric return man in the NFL.

So Cribbs believes he's played his final game in Cleveland. "Thanks everyone," Cribbs wrote this week on his twitter feed. "I love playing for the browns (sic) & put my all in to (sic) it, but it doesn't look good 4me(sic)  at this point on (sic) returning. I don't believe I made the to do list for the team in 2010."

Why does Cribbs believe he's gone? Because on-going negotiations yielded an offer from Cleveland that would have paid him approximately $1.4 million per season over the next six years with approximately $400,000 to sign. I must say that's a lowball offer.

And Cribbs agrees. "I'm sorry guys," he said. "I don't want to seem greedy but fair is fair and there is no way around that. I'm the best at what I do but the lowest paid ..."

So Cribbs intends to request a trade on the first day of the new league year and hold out if he doesn't get one.

"We’re going to formally put in a request for a trade,” agent J.R. Rickert told NFL.com. “He will not set foot in that facility again. If they had offered even something like $2.5 million per season we could have worked with them, but to me this offer is indefensible."

The fact of the matter is this is Mike Holmgren's first contract squabble in Cleveland. I doubt he wants to lose it. The fact is Cribbs is over-performing on a contract that has three years remaining. The fact is both sides have good leverage.

So don't be surprised if the Browns try to turn this mess into a draft pick with which Holmgren can bring in "his guy."

Enter the Miami Dolphins.

As we know, they need dynamic playmakers because there are precious few of those on the team. They could stand an upgrade at punt returner and kick returner. They could also use Cribbs in the Wildcat package, which he ran quite effectively in Cleveland. He averaged 6.9 yards per rush in 2009.

Oh, and did I mention Cribbs took snaps as a wide receiver also? He caught a modest 20 passes for 135 yards but obviously that is not his primary value.

His primary value is special teams. He returned three kickoffs and a punt for touchdowns this season. He has 10 return TDs in five seasons.

The downside is the guy does fumble. He had six fumbles in 2009 while fulfilling all his various duties. For perspective, you should know Davone Bess led the Dolphins with six fumbles in 2009.

So should the Dolphins be interested in Cribbs? Of course, they would be. But would they pull the trigger on a trade that would also involve paying the guy a new contract? That another matter.

If all Cribbs wants is $2.5 million per year, you should know the Dolphins are paying Ted Ginn Jr. an average of $3.5 million per year. Which is the better player?

And if the Browns are asking a second- or third-round pick for Cribbs, it probably sounds like an exceedingly high price to pay. But I remind you second- and third-round picks don't always turn into good players.

The Dolphins spent a second round pick on Pat White last year. They also spent a third round pick on Patrick Turner. Neither contributed very much, if at all, in 2009.

So what would you do?

like to see mcclain 1st round. if avail.
if not maybe dez if he slips. maybe even trade down and get spikes

2nd round either cody (bama) or williams (ten) at NT.

What about taking a shot on a guy like Lee Evans?

We probably can get him relatively cheap in FA, and we are certainly not looking for a possession guy, but rather someone who can stretch the field and is reliable catching the ball. He's pretty tough, we would steal him away from a rival, and he's better than Ginn.

Again your just naming draft picks, nothing with FA, OR trading. You going to complain for th next years to develop a Marshall, because our wr's will continue to suck?? Rather than just go get him, and get the goodies? instead waisting a home run hitter, with Mays, or CODy, you would rather draft a three year project?? COME ON MAN get real.

Brandon LaFell WR LSU 6-3 206

Not over 6' 2" huh?

Also, some things will change as not ALL Juniors have declared for draft.

Forgot to mention Dez Bryant!

You say they won't be there in late 2nd round, well maybe Marshall won't be available and be to expensive. I am still waiting for you to answer my question....

I do like what Tate from ND brings. He reminds me of Cribbs, but with better hands. The guy rips down the ball.

HE wasnt bad Karma, untill mister MCFAGELS F.CKED WITH HIS QB. YOU DONT GO AFTER A WORSE QB, AND TRADE YOUR FRANCHISE, I HATE MCFAGELS, AND I WOULDNT PLAY FOR HIM, MARSHALL IS IMATURE, BUT AT LEAST HE OWNED UP TO IT, UNLIKE SOME DIVAS, HE IS THE ONLY OPTION TO ATTAIN A ELITE WR IN THE OFFSEASON, AND IF WE DONT GET HIM, REST ASSURED, ANOTHER TEAM WILL, AND I WOULDNT BE SURPRISED, IF NE, OR THE JETS, MAYBE BILLS WOULD GO AFTER HIM, THEN YOU WOULD REALY HATE HIM, BECAUSE HE WOULD TORCH US ALOT.

hard to say anything with FA, because of the non CBA agreement. What if an agreement is made? A lot more options will be available as well as some of our own Miami Dolphins...

So how many games has Marshall played in the post season? If he is "so good", don't you think he would of led his tema to the playoffs by now? Especially in the AFC West and an 8-8 record won that division last season...

Im done now, your hatred for Marshall is stupid, you dont have to like him, but if he comes to our team, you better change your tone, because you will be forced to root for him. I hope we get him, because if any coaching staff that can make a man out of a child, its this one. I believe that we will get him, and i hope im right, otherwise our wr will still be the same bs it is now, and i also hope we get Wilfork. Time will tell, Mays will be our first round pick. PEACE.

I'd take dez if some other people weren't avail. only way we get a #1 is draft. take a look around the league. #1 Wrs not fallin off trees. teams do not let these guys go. they get them through the draft.

may not take 3 years anyway. some WR can step in and play right away.

as for mays, while I like his size/speed. played well last year. dropped off this year. I'd rather us take a shot at Antrel Rolle in FA if ARZ can't keep him

IM NOT ANSWERING NOTHING UNTILL YOU TELL ME,WHO TO DRAFT AT WR, NT, S, MLB, OR WHO TO ACQUIRE IN FA, FOR WR,NT,S,MLB, OR TRADE FOR S,MLB,NT,WR???GO AHEAD LIST SOME PEOPLE GO ON, DO IT RIDICULE ME FOR COMING UP WITH A SOLID GAME PLAN, AT LEAST I GOT ONE A..HOLES.

So I asnwered and you can't answer my question? What is up with that?

All the know-it-alls say the only way to build is through the draft. That's stupid.

Great teams build any way they can.

Randy Moss wasn't drafted in NE and Plaxico Burress wasn't drafted by the Giants. Kurt Warner wasn't drafted by the Cardinals and Jerome Bettis wasn't drafted in Pittsburgh.

There is a time and a place to do gutsy things with trades and in free agency.

Was Brett Favre drafted by Minnesota? Was Drew Brees and Darren Sharper and Jonathan Vilma and Jeremy Shockey drafted by New Orleans? NO, no, no, no, no and hell no.

Get a clue.

I have been reading a bunch of rubbish about signing B.Marshall, V.Jackson, and or Vince Wilfork. WHY? They will all be tagged and require too much in order to sign them.
You don't build teams through free agency. You add some depth and you find a "good" player or two, but you don't overpay for a "name". Look at the Chargers, talent everywhere!!!! They drafted the majority of it. The Colts!!!! Same thing. Let's keep our draft picks and continue to build. Take the best player on the board, as long as it is not a LT.
The Cowboys and Redskins have been signing high-profile, high-priced free agents for years. What has it all amounted to? NOTHING!!!!!

We are not at the same caliber as the teams you mentioned. Those teams are a lot more closer to winning then we are. We have more holes to fill than one player. Remember, 2008 was a super easy schedule.

You talk about a bad QB versus a franchise QB??

Who had the better year again between Kyle Orton and Jay Cutler?

Orton: 3802 yards 21 TD's 12 INT's 86.8 QB rating
Cutler: 3666 yards 27 TD's 26 INT's 76.8 QB rating
Cutler last year with Broncos: 3497 yards 20 TD's 14 INT's 88.1 QB rating

Orton more yards, more TD's, less INT's with pretty much the SAME team...

Jay Cutler is OVERRATED!!

hold on matty... draft is how you build a team. you add pieces through FA. moss was given up for a 4th rounder. I'll be more than happy given that up.

bree only avail cause rivers was QB or he wasn't goin anywhere.

shockey. yeah he was worth that 2nd round pick.

sometimes it works out in FA but you look at teams that have won superbowls and show how FA won it. don't even try jerome bettis either. that's a joke right? Favre, let's see how that works out in the playoffs.

this team is more than 1 or 2 players away. that's when you go aggressive.

Most of the Yards, AND TD'S CAME FROM WHO??? MARSALL the guy you hate.

I know this team wont be drafting our ELITE WR in the draft! WE ALL KNOW THAT! We also know we wont be drafting our Future NT in the draft this year too. We will address our S need, and add alot of depth, again. BUT we have the amount of players, to make trades this offseason, thats the beauty, we have the goodies, to make trades. To get at least our Franchise WR, OR NT. That is somthing we can do in FA, not in the draft, we can pick up one two Starters in the draft, and the rest as backups, however we can trade to get our Elite WR, and NT.

The fact that you guys, dont agree that we now have the depth, to make some nice FA acquisitions is mind boggling, especialy with Marshall. Wilfork fine, i dont think he will be tagged, but whatever. We need, and should persue Marshall. Use the draft to get the S, and MLB'S and depth. Use the FA TO adress the NT, AND WR while the option is there.

I mean why not use the FA to adress the two biggest needs, with QUALITY YOUNG, WORTH PRO BOWLERS?? Mays in the first round is a perfect draft, and the later rounds, picking up MLBS is much easier, and better than, picking a NT, or WR which is hard to come by, when in terms of ELITE status. Again it just boggles my mind, that you guys as fans, cant see that.

Great article mando

you boggle MY mind josh..

How do i Boggle your mind, what you going to use our first round, on tate?? Instead of Mays? Cody instead of mays, when you have a Wilfork available?

on a lighter note. at least we're not browns fans. mangini comin back for another year!!!!

I mean we have on first round pick this year, i dont want another TED Ginn, I WANT A TAYLOR MAYS. I also dont want another SOLAI, i want a WILFORK, and i want a MARSHALL. proven, young, pro-bowl caliber. MLB are easy to get, and come by, 3.4 NT,AND ELITE WR NOT SO MUCH!!

Give me the proven goodies in FA, and take the risk on positions, that are a dime, a dozen.

Do you realize what it will cost for Wilfork when he gets franchise tag?

You still didn't answer my question: How many post season games has Marshall played?

Even Ted Ginn has played more playoff games than Marshall. I am not stating that means anything, but it's just a point Marshall has never led his team to the playoffs and neither has the QB (Cutler) you say is a great franchise QB...

You don't know you is going to be a FA, because of the CBA...

If agreement is made, many things will change!

How many games has Ginn, had recieving over 200 yards? how many 3 or more td games has ted ginn have? How many record setting catchs has ginn have in one game? Dont go there, because you will make me spank my own teams talent.

not sure Cribbs is the answer to anything here in Miami. Sure, he'd be an upgrade but more of a luxury vs. a need. And we have a TON of needs on defense...

Maybe they'll take Wilson and Porter for Cribbs? HA!

What you want and what you get are going to be 2 different thigns. I am sure many football managers, owners and coaches want a lot of different players, but can't get them.

On top of the Marshall question, here is another one: What happens when the Pats franchise tag Wilfork? Do we give up multiple 1st rounders or whatever it would take (which would be a lot)!! You don't even know if the Broncos will franchise tag Marshall...

NO IT WONT, REGARDLSS OF CBA WILFORK IS A UNRESTRICED FA, REGARDLESS, HOWEVER MARSHALL WILL BE A RESTRICED FA REGARDLESS, WHAT CHANGES IS VINCENT JACKSON, WHICH WONT BE TRADED, AND MILES AUSTIN, WHICH AGAIN WONT BE TRADED, LEAVING EDWARDS/MARSHALL. pick one and send the other to the Jets.

who would I take in the 1st round? I can guess like anybody else on the blog or I can leave it in the hands of parcells and company... you know people that actually have a resume in this league. the people who took us out of the 1-15 season.

let'em do what they do. DRAFT!!!

I never said anything about our own talent...I think we all know Ted Ginn is not a #1 WR talent. We do all know Marshall is a head case that I don't feel worth having especially for a 2nd round pick and 2-3 players you say he is worth, because you would be giving WAY to much for a player who is a head case and never been to the playoffs...

Trade Ginn for Cribs.. Win win!

Here are a few others: Antonio Bryant, Steve Breaston, Jason Avant, Malcom Floyd...

jb - THANK YOU!!

forget bout bryant. he threw a towel in parcells face at dallas...LOL

I don't want Josh cribbs. Even with the season he had he is not worth trading any of our picks for. He's not a receiver, he's not a runningback so what's the point? He can run the wildcat which we already have Ronnie and pat for. He can return kicks which we drafted Teddy for.

Armando

So what your saying is that you would give a second and a third rounder for Cribbs? For Josh Cribbs? Are you fkn kidding me. Again I'm glad your not in the front office. Even to contemplate this is erroneous and careless to say the least.
Dolphins also drafted Chad Henne in the second round.
In 2003 Parcells drafted, when he was buying the groceries, TE Witten. Guess what round? The third...also drafted in the third that year was Visanthe Shiancoe another pro bowl tight end. Second round draft pick Sean Smith...and to say the least the Miami Dolphins, who as you and I agreed are still in rebuild mode, right?.
WTH are you even entertaining the thought? Guess you have to fill time and space. lol
Pat White pick like most of us I did not agree with. But Parcells doesnt miss to often and I have a big hunch we land a big impact tightend in those rounds mentioned. glad ur not in the front office. Seriousely come back with something, well of more substance and I know its the off season, so hold another live chat that worked well for you and this blog.

Mando, did you not watch the same football games as me? We didn't lack on offense. We were in fact pretty good. We sucked at defense. We score over 17 points in every game and that gave us a chance to win. Unfortunately our defense allowed over 20 in every game.
We need defensive players. Get Wilfork and empty the bank. Pick nasty mean linebackers. Guys that take peoples heads of and aren't afraid of a 15 yarder for beatin the qb into the dust. (not all the time but at least once at the beginning of the game) Add a head banging safety and make so that nobody wants to play the Dolphins.
You want this guy when he brings his attitude to the media on my favorite team. I would be surprised if Parcells allowed this.

don't thank me indiana. people may think we're the same person..

Dolphins4life - Armando never did say he would give a 2nd and 3rd! Here is what he stated:

And if the Browns are asking a second- or third-round pick for Cribbs, it probably sounds like an exceedingly high price to pay.

He is saying a 2nd OR 3rd would be a high price to pay, but look at some of the wasteful picks we have used on 2nd and 3rd rounders in the past...

Oh crap, you are probably right jb...

alright josh gotta go.. thanks for the laughs made the day go by faster.

and make sure you eat all your veggies for mom tonight before bed remember you got school in the morning!!!

WELL we can get Marshall, ill be happy, thats all i want for this offseason is to bring in marshall, do what ever in draft, but go out, and bring in a Elite wr. You guys forget, how devastating our running game would be if Defense's had to double up Marshall. We would deff be top rushing team in league.

Why dont you eat my ass, after we get him. Lick it too.

NSFW

Ughh....another 2nd round pick for a guy who can run the wildcat, return kicks, and possibly play receiver? Isn't that Pat White?

Cribbs is not Pat White. He's about 600x tougher. I want him....but not at to high a price.

Here are a few others: Antonio Bryant, Steve Breaston, Jason Avant, Malcom Floyd...

I think those are really the best options for miami at wide reciever next year unless they can pull away boldin from arizona. Marshall, and V. Jackson would cost us too many draft picks and given the fact that talks between the players and owners are at a landslide right now, i dont think either of those teams are willing to part ways with those guys.

I want Cribbs. He's a beast and our return men suck, Ginn is fast but so what?

Prepare to be dissapointed this offseason Josh. Marshall and Wilfork will never be Dolphins.

New England Patriots 112 48
New York Jets 80 80
Miami Dolphins 79 81
Buffalo Bills 66 94 0

I think our record over the last decade says it all. that is with 3 playoff appearances. Heck yeah pick up cribbs.

The Team needs to think Wide receivers and someone to get in the secondary with Will allen and Back up Will allen because they have "NOTHING"
HENNE HAS THE ARM WE JUST DON'T HAVE ANYONE TO CATCH THE BALL. #1 PRIORITY.
Think about that first then bring me this....

I'm still a believer in three things. A good QB, a good WR and a good RB. I think we have two of the three already. What we don't have is a WR that's worth a darn beyond 15 yards.

We have Brown and Cobbs. Cobbs can be a starter in this league IMO. Brown was set up for failure running a college scheme against pro athletes. Wildcat gets people hurt period. We can pick up a RB in the 2nd round. Wake just needs a chance once Porter is no more. So we don't need to address the ILB position right now. Our secondary will get better as time goes by. Young and full of heart those guys are.

PLEASE Tuna, contemplate the thought of trading Ginn and that 1st round pick for a decent WR.

No way! Don't give up a second or third! There's a great pick coming out of university of kansas ..... His name, dezmon briscoe wr. Very underated reciever! I thnk we can pick him up with a 2 or 3 pick and still use lower picks on other positions needed by Miami!

trade ginn and a 6th rounder for cribbs come on tuna call holmgren up asap!

wilfork wil not be a fin, but i don't see a huge problem with getting marshall. denver doesn't want his problems. he is absolutely worth the number 12 pick in the first round. no one we could get with that pick would impact this team more. he would be perfect for this team. him on one side bess in the slot and hartline/ginn on the other side. a nose tackle that's a FA, casey hampton could hit the market.

The Dolphins have signed fullback Rolly Lumbala wide receiver/returner Ryan Grice-Mullen to a two-year contracts, according to the Toronto Globe

===============================================

These are the kinds of signings I just don't get. I guess Polite wasn't getting the job done? Why sign scrubs that probably won't even make the team?

While other teams are moving and shaking up the football headlines we are in Canada signing scrubs. This just don't feel right to me. Something just seems horribly wrong about these types of signings.

I guess we build through the draft. When was the last time a organization actually done that and won a superbowl?
