An opportunity to agree with Mel Kiper

There was seemingly no amount of emnity left unused by Dolphins fans for Mel Kiper when the ESPN draft guru said and insisted the Dolphins made a mistake in picking Jake Long over Matt Ryan in 2008.

So if you are a Kiper hater, you are officially excused if you -- because this post is about the loquacious man with the helmet hair.

Kiper published his first mock draft of 2010 on Wednesday and, drum roll please, he's got Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain going to the Fins at No. 12 in the first round

"A potential home run for Miami, a team that needs an inside linebacker and could get the best one in the whole draft after the top 10," Kiper writes. "The Dolphins also could go after Dez Bryant if he were to fall to them here, because they also must address WR."

Yeah Mel, they also must address NT and OLB and maybe FS. They also will need to find help at TE and maybe RB, but that might come later in the draft.

Kiper has Bryant going to the Denver Broncos at No. 11 and rationalizes their need because he believes Brandon Marshall will be traded and the team will see the need as being too important. I happen to disagree with Kiper on this.

He forgets that Marshall was not a first round pick and neither was Eddie Royal and expert personnel departments can these days identify outstanding receivers in the second and third rounds. They call them value picks. So I wouldn't be surprised if the Broncos do not pick Bryant so high.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the Broncos do pick C.J. Spiller of Clemson because he's as much a home run threat as Bryant -- albeit in a different way -- and his intangibles and character blows Bryant out of the water.

I'm told the Dolphins are similarly impressed by Spiller and Bill Parcells especially likes him because he played a whopping 52 games in college and is quick as a lightning bolt.

I would submit to you that faced with having both McClain and Spiller on the board when they pick, the Dolphins (Parcells) would likely go with the elite defender at a position of need over the elite offensive playmaker that seems more like a luxury.

But that's just a guess based on The Big Tuna's history. He hasn't called lately to give me his draft strategy.

Meanwhile, has Dolphins' nation finally found common ground with Mel Kiper?

hello mando
been busy of late but never miss your blogs.hope our new dc will bring an agressive defense,
keep up the good work ;
can it be? am i first?

hey mando - anybody ever think or say that maybe will allen could maybe go to free safety? he would be the coach on the field for our young corners and be the smart veteran qb of the d-backs?

McClain would be a sick addition. C.J. Spiller would be a crazy luxury pick. He is a great player but is he more of a Reggie Bush or Chris Johnson? McClain is more of a sure thing in my opinion. This oughtta get real interesting in the next few months.

I think Pasqaloni played our defense wrong, and now with a AGRESSIVE DC i know for a fact, that Gibril Wilson will have a MUCH better year, prob pro-bowl worthy, because he will be used to blitz alot, and play the run in this aggressive scheme. Which plays to his strong points. Yeah he killed us in the pass, but that experiance only helped, in fact he played against the best last year, so with a MUCH better DC, i believe our Defense will be top ten next year, if we pick up Wilfork, and McClain.

I happen to agree with kiper. I've done some mock drafts on my own and have bryant going to denver with mclain slipping to miami . ILB's tend to slip. Patrick willis slipped to 11. The same argument you made about bryant and wr's found later in the draft can also apply to spiller and rb's being found later in the draft ( Dexter Mcluster. ole miss). However You're right about spiller being a LUXERY. Also , Keep Earl thomas S in mind

Yes folks , that was me . forgot to sign in. Good night

Spiller...go with the offensive home run threat because there will be other defensive guys falling in the second round, just like the past three seasons.

I'm no huge fan of college but I watched the Bama LongH gm & was not at all impressed with McClain. Not at # 12 anyway.
I'm willing to wager we come out of the draft with 2 LBs & acquire a FA thug as well since there will be departures.
My question is can Mia trade down a few slots & still get 2 quality LBs & maybe an xtra 3rd rnd?

Parcells WILL NOT draft D Bryant in a million yrs. Ain't gonna happ..

The Pat White pick last year was the ultimate luxury pick - a skill position player that will never ever start an NFL game. Never. That is the definition of a luxury pick. The Dolphins are not in any kind of position to use the 12th pick in the draft on a luxury pick. It absolutley has to fill a need b/c the Dolphins have a ton of needs.

Spiller is an easy player to fall in love with - seems so similar to what Reggie Bush looked like coming out of college. But the Dolphins dont have the luxury to take him, and I think picking him would be a disaster.

"Ive done some mock drafts of my own"

I think a luxury pick the Dolphins could afford is if Joe Mcknight fell to the early 4th round. Mcknight is a very nice player who has sick vision and athleticism who I think didnt play up to his skill level in college. He is a real sleeper in this draft.

If the Dolphins want to get McClain they`ll have to trade up to 10 with Jacksonville.
Their better alternative is to sign Dansby, trade down to about 20 and pick up a second second rounder. Then they can draft a nose, a free safety and a tight end in the first 2 rounds.
I call that maximizing your assets.

so espn and all pro scouts should be looking over their shoulder then nj troll?
d4life hillarious,spot on man.

The only people who are bigger losers than the people who post comments on a blog about an NFL team are the people who make fun of the comment posters. Let that sink in.

I think the Dolphins getting Mclain at #12 is the best scenario they can hope for. I hope that is exactly how it goes down.

Dolphins4life , What's so funny ??? Alot of us do mock Drafts including you i bet. NJ knows more about the draft then you. That's for sure . Aren't you the same Fool who thinks Mays will go ahead of Berry ??. Now that's something you can laugh about !! I , for one am glad NJ keeps us up to date with the Draft. He 's very Imformative.Georg

I think Kiper is usally full of -hair spray. Which the aerosal may get to him, but I personally like McClain at 12. The question is does Parcells like drafting ILB's so early or as he has in the past draft them after the first? Specifically this ILB-McClain who has shown to be a VERY good line backer from the games I've seen him play.

My gut feeling is no he goes after the next "LT" at OLB or even a NT like Dan Williams
Because Williams fits the proto type 3-4 nose and if you dont have someone stopping the run or occupying two blockers if not, then your linebackers are gonna get chewed up. So I'm thinking Williams, would love McClain but the talent level drop is steep once these guys are gone. So all these mock drafts are just something to get us salivating. If Parcells was a poker player he would be called the Big Shark instead of the Big Tuna because his eyes are a cold dark stare, lifeless and would never tip his hand.
But then again we all gotta fill our time so we talk about the draft and what ever fluff is out there. And wait, wait, wait and wait some more. The draft will be here before we know. Until then who is gonna be drafted last? Who's gonna be "Mr Irrelevant"- I hear they get a trophy.

I think Josh might be right about Gibril Wilson. I was thinking sign FA Ryan Clark but I don't know that he is any better. I think Wilson will be better.

You too forget Armando that Josh McDaniels is an offensive guy. I think he was a QB so when he sees Bryant there it's like the Tuna seeing a LB being a former LB coach. They are both biased and in this case it could work out well to get McClain.

I am intrigued by Spiller too. Can you imagine him as the Wildcat back on the sweeps with a running start??!! That would be sickening. If we get Karlos Dansby in FA and a NT like Casey Hampton then this may not be such a luxury after all.

Yeah you probably right Berry may go ahead of Mays and that may be my USC bias. But I sure as hell know football and I sure as hell do NOT do mock drafts.

That is more a waste of my time, I come onto this blog to hear my fellow Dolphin faithful and I get a chuckle every once a while at some of the posts.
I'm sure NJPHINFAN is not offended and if so he'll have his usally LMAO come back.
At least one of you found it funny, and when I show it to some of my friends they laugh too.
I'm NOT every knowing and neither is NJPHINFAN, or he'd probably be working for the NFL network or team. It's cool though sticking up for him show your a fan-NJ you have a following.

Ohh by the way George it just goes to show your laziness if you wait to get up dates on the draft from NJPHINFAN. Google it baby there are lots of mock drafts. lol

Sorry typos
Good night Dolphins nation god bless us all.

I'm sure that's the only way you get your information by google. I guess you don't scout with your own eyes .

By the way , this is how little you know about the draft . Dan williams at 12 is to high. Most experts have him rated late 1st round. He will probably go somewhere in the 20's.

bill parcells draft bryant if he can make pat white look better so it doesnt look like he missed on a pick if mcclain is there which i doubt ...i think it going to be reciever(bryant) wr was jus so lacking that the coaches kept choking back the vomit as they had to lie and say they actually liked the ones they have on the team

If C.J. Spiller is there at 12 and the Dolphins don't select him someone should be fired. HE IS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE DRAFT, period. You know ecxactly what you get from him. His body of work is too impressive. We need to draft the best player on the board whenever we select.

Aside from the Jets, none of these playoff teams have a "scary" defense. However, the Saints, Colts and Vikings can put the ball in the endzone fast. C.J. Spiller can do that in a number of ways. Ricky, Ronnie, and C. J. makes a defensive coordinator nervous. When was the last time a defensive coordinator nervous about playing the Miami Dolphins offense? Guys like this don't come around too often.

anybody got a link for spiller?

or McClain?

I've seen a lot of mock drafts that have McClain long gone by the time the Dolphins pick.

I'd like to see some vid on either or.

No more luxury picks (Last years White pick was a disaster). C.J Spiller will be just that considering Ronnie should and probably will be resigned. You can almost guarantee Parcells will pick McClain if he's still there. The best linebacker in the draft who fills a huge need...it's a no brainer. Forget Bryant, aint gonna happen. Cant imagine Cody Williams or Dan Williams getting picked cus that would be too much of a reach but i would'nt be surprised in the slightest if Miami take a good hard look at Brandon Spikes.

Terrence Cody not Cody Williams

I need you'all to keep me informed on draft prospects and who might fit. Got my own thoughts but, hey, can't be here as much as I'd like(lol)Like the Nolan thing as long as he stays here for at least 3yrs.

Parcells has never taken a RB that high. No way.

The tuna will not pick a WR in the first round!! Never willingly has!! He beloved in value picks. Roll that dice again bill. Cause turner can't even get on the field!!
If mclain is gone like most think he will be, we should take spiller!!!
Adrian Peterson situation anyone??
Ricky is only staying one more year anyway!!

Agree on Tuna not taking a WR in the 1st but i think Spiller would be somewhat of a luxury pick at the mo. Granted,i know Ricky is retiring but thats after next season so i say draft Defense then hopefully after next season we select a RB to compliment Ronnie. Just my opinion.

If u watched spiller tear apart the canes... Since I'm a cane fan u would know this guy I worth the dolphins looking at... At 12... No... But worth a look if he drops a lot

I like the McLain pick. If he is gone, they should trade down, stockpile picks, and draft the NT from Alabama. That guy is enormous and could anchor that d-line for years.

Rbs are expected to be plentiful

I like the idea of trading down in the first round and getting an additional 2nd round pick

then ....

1. CODY... NT Bama
2. JOHNSON ... OG Bama
2. GRESHAM .... TE Okl

That's a great mock draft Mike. I don't think Gresham will be available though. Maybe they'll get Spikes so he can poke rival teams' players' eyes out!

Who cares we will pick up 7-10 Pat whites in the draft and cam will be our coach again. Plus i think ginns family will be our starter in every position for the next 12 years. Seriously though we really cant afford to be frivolous or stupid on this draft. This is this regimes 3rd year and they need to get it right this time. Also you rebuild a team through the draft but please dont ignore the free agent this year, there are some good young players coming free this year and a few at the position we need to fill. PS G.WILSON WILL NEVER BE A PRO-BOWLER EVER HE JUST PLAIN SUCKS IN THE PASSING GAME WHERE HE IS NEEDED MOST. I mean our mlb should do his job and snuff the run not your SS or FS. So that means if G.Wilson is our run snuffer that not saying much for CLAM CROWDER!!!! GET THE POINT!!!!

I'm not sure Spiller is a luxury pick.

Ronnie is never healthy and Ricky is about to retire.

Parcells did pick WR Terry Glenn with the 7th pick in 1996, of course he went on to refer to Glenn as "She" after his rookie season!

I think it's too hard to tell yet before the combine. We'll see workout wonders like Vernon Gholston, who were not considered 1st rounders rise on the charts, while speed, attitude or injury concerns will drop others. The list of possiblities is all over the place. Here's the guys I have seen in different mocks...

Derrick Morgan - DE, Georgia Tech
Rolando McClain - ILB, Alabama
Jason Pierre-Paul - DE, South Florida
Earl Thomas - S, Texas
Dan Williams - DT, Tennessee
Dez Bryant - WR, OSU
Brandon Spikes - LB, Florida
Joe Haden - CB, Florida
Terrence Cody - DT, Alabama
C.J. Spiller - RB, Georgia Tech

This is actually good because number 12 is usually a dangerous spot, just out of the elite section of the draft where a lot of teams reach for players. But with this many possibilities it indicates this is a very deep draft and one way or another we are going to come out of it with a great player.

Given the depth of this draft and perhaps teams wanting to come up and grab a need, this might be the perfect opportunity to trade back and get aome extra picks.

I have been a big fan of Kiper for many years, as he is better than many of the people who draft for NFL teams. If you simply go back and look at what his comments have been about Dolphin drafts since 1982, you will see that if he was doing the drafting for the Phins, we would have been in much better shape personel wise than with the players we picked in most cases....Kumerow, Ted Ginn, passing on Drew Breese when he had us taking him....the list is endless.

TE, not a dire need, OLB not a dire need, RB not a dire need.

ILB, S, and a big WR a dire need.

Getting rid of Porter, Torber, Ayodele, Wilson, even Crowder (IMHO) are priorities. You can take 2 ILB's cut from most teams and upgrade over what we had last year.

Patrick, your top 5 selections are the way I see the top 5 pick going for the Dolphins - almost in order too. Just flip Piere-Paul and Thomas and I think you see the priority order.

Want to make a comment on here since I can't on the other article.

But what a stupid Article that was about "Jets win will validate Fins!"......
Get that crock of S#&T out of here!!!!!!!

he is dead on..... that is the perfect pick even if they have to trade up 2 spots get it done... he is smart, tough and young.
23nd round pick either a TE or Safety please
trade the 3rd for and Camarillo for Boldin
4th safety or TE These guys have to contribute right away

this is my opinion on what will happen or should happen-i like mcclain dont get me wrong but we run a 34 defense, meaning you need a HOG in the middle of the dline for sure.we will trade down if a team makes the right offer. cody is the type of player needed in the middle period not saying he will be the first player we take but if we can trade down and say pick the OLB from TCU we still get a good player at a position of need and maybe take cody with the 43rd pick(wishing) but i can see him(cody) being picked in the first just not that high(12).There are alot of defensive players at LB and DE(who can play OLB in 34) this year coming out.if we trade down and say get 2nd or 3rd round pick to go along with it thats great and if that happen i would go with cody first(and no he's not GARBAGE).cody is a wilfork clone plus younger and as much as i hate to say this he played for a damn good coach in SABAN in a 34 defense. there are no promises that we will even get vince from the pats. i would also see if Paul S. has any trade value if not thats cool too,he's okay.but my point is this we need somebody who command double teams at NT in order for the 34 to work properly, then we look for the best LBs left, over the next 3 to 4 picks, slipping in a big, strong, fast WR in between and we are right where we need to be. ask ray lewis how good it feels to have a beast at NT,remember ray didnt like the 34 defense at first b/c he was getting hammered by o-linemen until they got the NT they have now and he's still making plays 15 years later! oh yea and draft jimmy graham some time after the fourth round for sure if he's still there(will be a great TE). senior bowl will help the staff in determining what we do as well but free agency will be the biggest factor in what and how we play this thing out in april(cant wait)

Question; is picking Spiller or McClain or whomever at 12 Bill Parcells' decison or Jeff Ireland's? If Tony Sparano is allowed to pick his assistants and coordinators, isn't Ireland allowed the final decision on personnel?

i liked what parcells did in the draft in 2008 but 2009 was a disaster. he got away from defense and missed on p.white,p turner, john nalbone when they could have been selected in later rounds. pat white was our biggest stretch in that he doesn't have an nfl body and is being groomed as a hand-off specialist. im not sure who said he could pass but he cant hit a receiver in warm-ups! it took all year and 3 qb's injuries to give thigpen a look-see. i really like what i saw; even the interception at the goal line was a good pass. there was obvious pass interference with one defender laying on ginns back before the ball got there. watch the replay!! ryan baker are 2 others who couldnt get on the field.

Eddie, final decision is Parcells...if not, why would he ever be here???

He'll I'm not saying you take CJ Spiller, but not saying it's a terrible pick. The year before the Vikings took Adrian Peterson, Chester Taylor ran for over 1200 yards. Wouldn't say running back was a major priority for them. Depending on how the draft shakes out, Spiller could be the pick and I wouldn't be mad. If McClain I'd gone, if both D Williams and Cody are still available, if Mays, E Thomas, and Chad Jones are all available, and given the stud depths at 3-4 OLB, then I'm ok with Spiller, because plenty of depth in the draft. Spiller brings the explosive plays to the offense, ie Chris Johnson. I also like Jahvid Best out of Cal if he fell to the 3rd, though I doubt that. People are hellbent on a WR, I think a TE like A Hernandez or an explosive RB could fill the void of no #1 wideout. But I wouldn't take Spiller if McClain is there. Or if there is a run on DT or S, them that also means no for Spiller.

If McClain is there at 12 there is no doubt you take him...being Nolan was let go from Denver because they don't want to blitz as much AND Mcdaniels is taking a beating over the Cutler mess still, it would seem he would go offensive pick

Bootang, we just bought in an aggresive blitzing type coach, I'm pretty sure our top picks will be defensive top notch players

As a Clemson grad I would love to see Spiller in Miami, but I can't see Parcells going for it. My money's on a LB.

I'm hoping a drug rumor gets going about Eric Berry and he slips to number 12..think Warren Sapp..lol

for all you people who insist on getting rid of ginn are funny!! get rid of the wr coach, get rid of the OC if any thing!!! of the players on the team, he's the only one who hasnt had a veteran to school him on his craft. how many passes did he drop in 08(2-3),how many times we must see bess catching bubble screen,or hartline run a wr reverse(he did score though)all plays ginn should be running.how many times the kid beat defenders only not to get the pass thrown his way or to long or to short(pennington). he's the only one with true speed on the team(use it).i would hate to see ginn go to another team and SHINE like so many former dolphin players have done. and for all you who say he runs out of bounds to much, i understand but the kid is only 170lb soaking wet(get what you can and get down). marvin harrison was the same way and we all see how his career played out. hell randy moss dont go cross the middle and take big hits either but no one complain about that(i guess b/c he dont play for us)
