2010 draft needs to be a boon for the Dolphins

My Sunday column explained why the upcoming 2010 might be the most important for the Dolphins in a very long time.

Simply, in year No. 3 of the Parcells-Sparano-Ireland dynasty, the Dolphins need to turn the corner on one playoff season and one losing season. But unlike most other NFL offseasons, free agency will be an unpredictable exercise based on the likely uncapped year.

Free agency also might not offer the many opportunities to add young, prime-of-their-career talent it has been in the past.

So if the Dolphins are to make the significant jump from inconsistent and mediocre to good or very good, the draft must deliver the talent to do that with.

Well, the Dolphins will have plenty of arrows in their quiver to do damage in the draft.

They have nine picks assigned so far:

First round - #12 overall.

Second round - #11 in the round.

Third round - #9 in the round.

Fourth round - #12 in the round.

Fifth round -- None. Consideration to Kansas City for Tyler Thigpen.

Sixth round - #4 in the round (from Kansas City), # 5 in the round (from Washington) and #10 in the round (own).

Seventh round - #5 in the round (from Kansas City) and #12 in the round (own).

But I'm here to tell you the Dolphins should have at least one more pick. The compensatory picks will be awarded in March and the Dolphins are likely to score at least one pick based on their 2009 offseason losses.

You'll recall that last offseason the team lost three unrestricted free agents -- cornerback Andre' Goodman to the Denver Broncos, safety Renaldo Hill to the Denver Broncos and center Al Johnson to the New England Patriots.

The Dolphins signed three unrestricted free agents -- guard Joe Berger, center Jake Grove, and cornerback Eric Green.

I cannot recite the exact NFL net gain-loss formula for unrestricted free agency, because I'm not that much of a dweeb, but suffice to say the Dolphins will be judged to have a net loss. And while they are not likely to gain anything as high as a third- or fourth-round pick via the compensatory process, they might pick up a fifth-rounder. We'll see.

(Before you go all nutty in the comments section saying I messed up because the Dolphins also signed Gibril Wilson and Jason Taylor, I remind you neither were unrestricted free agents. Both were released by their teams. Both were street free agents. Cameron Wake was also a street free agent as he wasn't even in the league the season before. The NFL does not weigh them in the gain-loss formula.)

Now, as to what the Dolphins do with their nine and perhaps 10 draft picks, I can tell you this:

Miami needs to do better, and certainly no worse, than last year as far as production from their rookies.

In 2009, the Dolphins got two starters out of the first two rounds. That's good despite the fact the first two rounds offered Miami three picks.

The Dolphins need to find starters in the first two rounds of 2010. And then they have to do better beyond that than they did in 2009.

You see, in 2009 only fourth-rounder Brian Hartline contributed to any substantial degree.

Third rounder Patrick Turner was a non-factor. Fifth-rounder John Nalbone was a non-factor. Fifth-rounder Chris Clemons was mostly a special teams player. Sixth-rounder Andrew Gardner was a non-factor. And seventh-rounder J.D. Folsom was a non-factor.

If the Dolphins can find three starters from the 2010 draft, coupled with perhaps one or two starters from free agency and some other avenue (trade?), we could be talking a significant improvement from 2009.

And that's what the Dolphins need.

I do not see him falling out of round 1 either, but figured I would throw it out there for debate and see what everyone thought

Alright guys, to the gym and then errands. I am out for awhile, good talking this morning, many good views and posts.

I see westvadolphins been going to NJPhin university. He pass his first 2 classed you are wrong and you are idiot. Next class thanks for stopping by but be careful on midterm for bwahahaha 101 I hear it very tuff.

Indiana still hopeless

I don't think there's a chance Spiller makes it out of the first round. He's an abvious pick for Seattle with their two first round picks but I realize they have other holes too. Not sure he fits in San Diego but you never know. Maybe a team like Washington trades back into the first round and takes him or maybe a team like New England, with all their picks, decides surprises and decides he's there guy.

One last post, I think FA is important because if we eliminate so many holes, we can start adding players we wouldn't be able to. Say we get a S and ILB, a guy like Aaron Hernandez isn't such a bad pick in the 2nd round. Or D McCluster in the 3rd. What made the Pat White pick bad wasn't picking him, but not picking other more glaring needs. Offensively, if we have 7 or legit options, that is tough to stop. A great passing game, mixed with power wildcat(no Henne on the field if we run Wildcat, it's about the extra blocker, and we don't want him blocking) and we could be pretty formidable on offense.

I see mofongo missed the english classes we were giving out here last week need a refresher course??????

WE HAD TWO ROOKIE CB'S PLAYING AGAINST MANNING!!!!!!! It's not like Manning torched the Dolphins in that game. You take away two of his passes (one to Clark and the other to Garcon) then the Phins shut him down. It would have been nice if ONE of our receivers could have caught a TD that game but the Phins receivers don't catch TD's. Ginn dropped the pass in the endzone that would have won the game for us. Leading up to that is non irrelevant, Henne threw a TD and it was dropped. Hey who needs a guy like Brandon Marshall when we got Ginn who can't catch and Bess who can't hold on to the football. BOTTOM LINE Marshall will have more of an impact on the team then anyone we will be able to draft at #12 overall and in the 3rd. When we are watching the Phins next season and Rolando McClain is getting 5 tackles a game and Marshall is with another team getting 10 catches 100yds and a TD it will make your logic foolish.

Yeah, there is to many teams and picks between our first and second to think he would still be around, but if he was around I would say TAKE HIM. Miami will be going defense one way or the other in the first round, so everyone thinking offense in the 1st...think again!!

For all the Brandon Marshal haters please name me a number 1 pick that this team has made in the last 10 years that would have as big an impact as him.

Also, as we can see from last years picks Pat White and Pat Turner the #3 pick is not as valueable as everyone thinks. The draft is hit or miss and Marshal and Dansby are hit and hit.

i believe that enough people have told you already that you are wrong 305 so as it stands you are the one who looks foolish... because i will tell you again you are wrong... if the first three quarters of the game are played better then that play is irrelevant just like your arguments.

WestVaFins - mofongo is probably kobra kai, so don't even respond to him.

305_PhinPhan - We had 2 rookie corners splitting time against Manning. If Gibril knew how to tackle, Clark does not score on first play of the game. I am not saying Manning wouldn't of still scored on the drive though. Either way the Colts were still a better team. They play us 10 times last season and unfortanely they are probably winning at least 9 of them. We played our hearts out in that game, but the better team still won...

Bootang25,

I know we all agree that the Pat White pick, at the position he was taken was a bad pick. What do you think they should have done with that pick? Was Brace still there? He might have been a good pick. Should we have grabbed a WR (don't remember who was still available). I still belief Parcells had a fear that New England would nab White and he wanted to keep him away from them. And I'm also in the very, very small minority of people on here who feel White could still be a useful player for us at some point.

westva you need to try harder than that to graduate NJphin U! where is your lmfao!?

where did all these marshall fans come from really????? no one is saying that he isnt a great player. no one is saying he isnt going to be productive. we have many holes that need filled. we cannot afford to give away 2 draft picks for one position that really can be filled many different ways.

Indiana still hopeless

No more Brandon Marshall talk guys ....PLEASE....

westva you wrong. Brandon Marshall is a very good player.

Dolphins dont need him though

305_PhinPhan - You stated this in your post @ 10:26 "Henne threw a TD and it was dropped" --> Pennington was playing in that game as he didn't get hurt until week 3 against the Chargers in the 3rd quarter. I am not 100% what you and WestVaFins are arguing, but just from reading that post @ 10:26 and your false statement I pointed out above in this post you are wrong...

Cuban how you think westva doing on his lessons from NJPhin U? Will he pass mid-term for bwahahahaha? Or his next class thanks for stopping by

no one is saying that he isnt a great player. no one is saying he isnt going to be productive.
Posted by me...
Sooo mofongo i believe that is my endorsement that he is a good player..
Soo now here should be your schedule in the mornings
8-9 English
9-10 Writing
10-11 reading comprehension
11-12 lunch.
Do this for three weeks and then come back....

Good points Indiana. We DID play our hearts out but the better team still won. Same with the Saints game. Those two games alone, as well as the Pittsburgh game showed us our defence just isn't good enough. And you know what....throw the game in Buffalo in too, which I was at. Our defence caved when we needed it most.

A lot of games are won in the 4th quarter! The post above from Michigan fin thinks im right. We know what we would be getting for Marshall, a top 5 receiver in the league. Do you know what you are getting with a draft pick? Turner and White a 2nd and a 3rd does not help a team that is rebuilding, does it? What is the point of drafting and trading for so many QB's over the years if we are not going to get someone to catch the ball for them? It's like buying a car with no wheels, what's the point. Since you "think" you are right in a best case scenario who or what will we get in the 1st and 3rd round? I bet it is nothing compared to getting a player like Marshall but I would love to hear you try.

Mofongo - You say we don't need Marshall? I am not a fan at all on getting him, but to say we could not use a player of his talent is so FALSE!! Why wouldn't we need a very talented WR on our team?

Anyone saying someone is hopeless, is just simply hopeless themselves...

Brandon Marshall supporters are just in awe of his talent. They do not care that we lose draft picks that we need. They do not care that our defense is awful because Brandon Marshall can obviously play offense well enough to make the other team not score on us....

westva I already graduate aloco university. I don't need to go to school.

Indiana still hopeless.

Dolphins dont need Marshall

Please leave this blog sir

Craig, Brace and Butler were both gone, as was Mauluga. I didn't mind. And still don't mind, the pick. I also think NE was considering him, and mark my words, don't be shocked when Tim Tebow is drafted by NE with one of their 3 number 2's, or maybe early in the 3rd if they trade back like always. As for a guy I would have taken, I really like Clint Sintim who went I believe the pick after White. People always see everything with 20/20 after the pick, but remember, we still weren't 100% sure Henne was the guy at that time. I just think there were more pressing needs, and that 1 bad pick still would not have fixed everything. Had we picked Sintim instead of Whote, it's not like we win 2 more games. In fact, if you pick White, do what he does best. We had him in their in full house backfield type sets, put 3 WRs in there, maybe keep a TE in to block, and go from there. The game will not get any faster for Pat White. It will slow down. If after 3 years we have no return on the pick, then yes it was a TERRIBLE pick. But I won't say that right now.

Indiana Dolphins dont need Marshall like body dont need cancer parts

305 i am done talking about brandon marshall. you are wrong and you are not going to drop it... but it is soo clear you are wrong and i know that sooo i am done on that topic how about something fresh.

WHAT MANY HOLES? If we sign Dansby and Rolle (which is very realistic) and say we trade for Marshall we still have 7 picks possibly 8 to worry about NT,OLB and depth. Sorry but if the Trifecta can't find us a starting NT and OLB in this draft with 7 picks then they should not be in control of the Dolphins. What else do we need with all of these "holes"? I think those 5 positions sum everything up.

Craig M - I was at the Indy game in row 1, corner endzone with 3 Colts fans that I am friends with from Indianapolis. Yes, it is hard to find other Miami fans in Indiana. I was very impressed with the way we progressed, because only 18 games before the Indy game we went 1-15...

We are on that right track, but need to stay patient. Keep the hope alive fans and don't be so critical or disrespectful to our team and players...

Mofongo - We need a #1 recevier right? If you look at pure talent alone, we need Marshall. I am not saying we should get him or that I want him (cause of his attitude). But, we need a WR with his talent!!!

Westva what you think going to happen with Brandon Marshall?

Indiana some people need kidney transplant if you give them kidney already with cancer they die because the thing they needed had cancer.

MO, West va. Is talking straight talk here my friend, Dont know if he's a NJ disciple, but Miami need's help on the defense.. Badly.. Like I said in other posts miami's Defense lost 5 games last year... That's right 5 GAMES New Orleans , Indy, And they didnt even show up for there last 3 games.....So if NJ says need help on the Defense side I must Agree...... 100% BAHHHHAAAAHHHHAHHHH....

Oh because 305 wants Dansby and Rolle then we are def. going to get them. Are you forgetting the other teams in the league that can try for them as well??????? Both of those pickups are not going to happen. You have compounded bone head trade talks with FA talk that also is a bit out there when you look at it. A good guess would be that if Dansby signs that will conclude the fins FA pick ups.

Mofongo - Thank you captain obvious!! I have been against Marshall since day 1, but to say we don't need a WR of his talent is FALSE!!

What do i think is going to happen with Brandon Marshall???? He will be traded... Not to the dolphins but to the bears to rejoin his buddy Jay Cutler....

Indiana donde puedo comprar un burro sin dientes?

Indiana donde puedo comprar un burro sin dientes?

Why don't you just say what that means: Indiana where can I buy a donkey without teeth

I am no fool and took many years of Spanish and that was my minor in college idiot!! Nice try Kobra Kai...I'm done with you!

Good points Bootang. I see Tebow going in the second round too and I think it will be interesting to see teams jostling for him. New England wouldn't surprise me at all but I could also see Jacksonville getting invloved and maybe a surprise team like Washington. It would be interesting to see what Shanahan could do with him (assuming of course, they don't draft a QB in the first round).

I liked Sintim coming into the draft but I forget where he went (Seattle? Giants?) and I didn't really follow him last year. Did he have a decent year? Would he have upgraded hat we had?

Mofongo is Kobra Kai and Armando will delete anything you say in which means nothing or if you are trying to clog this blog with dumb non football related items.

Wow, how many people forgot to read the artcle!!? Mando says we need more picks because we have a LOT of holes and I see a ton of people that want to trade what we have, lol!

Marshall is not the answer because our offense was pretty damn good last year. Rookie QB throwing 50 times in a game and winning. 32 yr old backup RB ends the season with 1100 yards...I think the O is going to be OK especially since we had a ton of injuries.

Our D was pathetic and needs the help. ILB main priority because it's the weakest position in the draft. OLB close 2nd. Parcells likes to draft NTs late and Wilson WILL be back so safety not as big of priority(Clemmons may still win the job).

We wont get dansby from the skins or giants. We wont go after high priced WRs(maybe Boldin if the price is right). We wont go after high priced safeties.

Mofongo, You might try New Mexico, I here there's plenty there....

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Dolphins need Brandon Marshal! waaaaaaaaaaaaah. I will tell Mando waaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh. Kobra Kai call me names. Mofongo call me names, must be same guy. waaaaaaaaa

Thats you indy

yaya hit the nail on the head...

got to go time to eat mofongo

is that your sisters name?>???

yaya - All good points except us keeping Wilson. I don't think it is possible we keep him IMO! He just was plain simple VERY BAD! I would take my chances with 2nd year Clemons before giving Wilson another chance!

no westva, not every place is like your state. mofongo is nice lunch. try expand you horizon redneck there is much more to life than kissin cousins and special six toe socks.

I even agree about the Gibril part... I dont want him back but i think he will be back....

Mofongo - I do not have to "tell" anyone anything...

Get a life buddy and if you are trying to "make fun" (like you say) please come with something better than something that has to do with donkeys, because that makes no sense and just proves how much more of a dumbazzz you are!!

Mofango Garcia..... A very loose women indeed.......

"WE HAD TWO ROOKIE CB'S PLAYING AGAINST MANNING!!!!!!! It's not like Manning torched the Dolphins in that game. You take away two of his passes (one to Clark and the other to Garcon) then the Phins shut him down."

Not sure which game you were watching because I saw Manning shred our defense like paper. You make a good point though, if you take away two TDs against every team we play then we would probably be Super Bowl contenders. Geez!!

Sintim only ended up playing like 10 games and was hardly a factor. Not to say he wouldn't have had an impact with us, but he didn't do a whole lot either.

I dont like Wilson either but they will give him another chance to prove us wrong. Hell, I dont even dislike Wilson. It's not his fault they tried to convert a SS to FS. Just a bad decision in the beginning.

I disagree with Mando on where our biggest need is. Wake is just as good as Porter right now if not better. Keep JT and we are in same position as last year(with a better DC). AT ILB we have a career backup and a major underachiever. At least Porter sometimes backed up his talk! McClain is our need and thankfully the teams going before us have major needs that arent ILB(even though ILB is a need for a lot of them).

Dolphins - Good point and to back it up some more, when a QB is only on the field for 14:52 in an entire game and still passes for over 300 yards, that is shredding a defense!!

Free agents we need to sign to address needs:
NT- Ryan Pickett (GB) younger veteran who is a good run stopper. Not likely to get a high round NT, most good players will be gone by our 2nd rd. pick.

TE- Ben Watson (NE), not many options out there for TE, decent to fill the hole for a year. Would Parcells draft a high round TE?

RB- Chester Taylor (Min) future replacement for Ricky, still has some miles left on his legs. Need to draft a younger RB, but can we afford to this year with other holes? Other option could be Willie Parker (PIT).

FS- Darren Sharper (NO) the playmaking FS we need to lead this young defense. Would give Clemons another year to learn.

If we get these four guys then we can focus on ILB,WR,OLB,OG in the draft.
