A quickie chat with Brandon Graham

Maybe the Dolphins draft Rolando McClain because everyone loves the guy and everyone says he's going to be a star. Maybe they take Eric Berry (if he's there) because they need a playmaking free safety. Maybe they reach for a nose tackle or a wide receiver.

I still love Michigan's Brandon Graham.

Have I made that point to you guys enough this week? Even as the adoption papers are being drawn up, I wanted to share with you yet more reasons I think this star DE-OLB from Michigan is the real deal and should be considered at No. 12 overall -- contrary opinions from Mel Kiper and Todd McShay and all the other draft pundits notwithstanding.

I direct you to this interview Graham did with Scout.com during Senior Bowl week -- before he went off and won the game MVP award with five tackles and two sacks.

In the interview Graham says a couple of things that caught my attention:

He expects to run in the 4.5s at the Indianapolis Combine next week. And he loves the idea of playing 3-4 outside linebacker.

"Oh yeah, I feel real good," Graham says about dropping in coverage. "I've been working on my hips, working on my drops every day in practice for Michigan ... With a little coaching from the NFL guys, I believe I can get it done."

Graham has no shortage of confidence. And he couples that with something of a chip that dares naysayers to disbelieve he can do whatever he sets out to do. That's why he says he wants to run in the 4.5s at the Combine.

"I'm excited because I like it when people doubt me," he says. "That's just a challenge and I like challenges and I'm going to try to fulfill it. And if I don't, then I gave it my all and that's all I can say."

One thing Graham has shown in all his games and all the practices at the Senior Bowl was a seemingly infinite desire. He wants to be good. He wants to improve. He wants to get to the quarterback. He wants to be an NFL star.

"[I'm] just trying to show that my motor's always going," he says, "I love football and I want to make plays and sack the quarterback."

You combine want-to and talent and you know what you have?

A very good NFL player.

nate burleson is the next FA wr the trifecta will pick up, has had two good years with below average qb play and will not cost big bucks to get

Good read Mando, I actually read the exact interview today. I lve Graham, my only concern is arm length, but as I said about all players, they have some question marks. He is one of the 4 or 5 guys I would be happy with on draft day.

He had a great senior bowl and I like the guy, but 12th is too high to pick him

Graham will go somewhere in late 1st early 2nd. Miami should take a elite playmaker the best player available on there board and if its a need position that's perrrfect but if that need position is not available go with the best player available on your board period...!

Dude, I'll follow you on twitter if you unblock me. @travisa13 It's OK to be ignorant on climate change. Don't hate the player.

Ignorance is seeing science made up by global warmists and still believing in it. Ignorance is seeing people change the name of global warming to climate change because it suits their agenda and not questioning why it was done.

Mando,

If those adoption papers go through can Brandon write you off on his taxes after he gets into the NFL? LOL

The positive attitude, the try hard every freakin play, if he hit's that 40 time goal then BLAZING speed will be added. I have a feeling he will do well in the bench reps area as well at the combine.

As some have pointed out, James Laurinitis and DeMeco Ryans didn't tear it up at the combine (Ryan had a good shuttle time) but they have both contributed to their respective teams.

In hunting QB's from the edge and heading off RB's trying to get outside I feel the triangle numbers are more valuable to DE's / OLB's than ILB.

Graham's attitude REEKS of a Jason Taylor's to me. Taylor went later because he didn't have the perfect body at the time for DE. Everyone thought he would be too light and get run on too easily. Lotta plays later he just got it done with desire and talent. I have a VERY good feeling about Graham doing well even if they defy the popular opinion and have to get him early @12.

Cheers,

global warming? hahaha where?

LOL. It's completely ridiculous that some groups are still pretending like global warming/climate change is still happening despite the leading scientists admitting that they lied, cheated, and falsified their data. There's so many people waiting for a monetary handout based on the false data. They just don't want to let it go.

Maybe Graham will be a great NFL player. I wouldn't read too much into anything these players say though. They're all so well coached in what to say to the media. They know what teams are looking for and they're going to say all the right things.

Armando

I've said it before and I'll say it again, barring injury Brandon Graham will have the most impact of any player on defense to come out of this draft.

Armando I'm with you, a rarity especially after the last few days, but I absolutely love this guy. I liked him before the Senior bowl, but during that week of practice and the game it self, I was hooked. He beat OT Vladimir Ducasse, of Massachusetts all week and made most OT's look bad. And Ducasse is not swiss cheese and will be a good pro on some NFL roster.
I love this guy...

Now wheather Parcells and company are willing to draft him, because lets face it Graham has everything going for him save for what Parcells covets, which is height and length (short arms) is another story. But what Graham lacks in height and length, he more than makes up for in strength and speed (which Parcells also covets esp. strength). Watch this guy blow up at the combine, because of the Senior bowl, his draft stock had already moved him up, I bet by the time the combine is over Graham's stock will rise again.

Now if the Dolphins can sign Dansby, draft Graham in the first round. If the Dolphins somehow work a trade and add a second rounder or third rounder via trade that would be choice. The two players who I like in the third rounds are Dennis Pitta TE out of BYU, I absolutley love this guy at TE, can block and catch with the best of them and Cam Thomas at NT from North Carlonia and would be a cog in the middle of a 3-4 defense. Scouts say because of his good showing at the Senior bowl his stock is creeping up, Dolphins might have to take him a bit early maybe in the second round?
Then pick a ILB somewhere in the second or third round with the added pick...we would be set there in the front seven.

Now I think there is value in rounds 4 or later to add say a FS like Kurt Coleman from Ohio State or Myron Rolle from Florida State who is also a Rhodes Scholar. I think our defense when the draft of 2010 is over, will make the Dolphins absolutley better and younger and stronger.

GoDolphins!

If he runs in the 4.5 range at his weight that would be something to crow about!

All the times I have seen posted on him are around the 4.7 range. Shaving that much time off a 40 yard dash would reflect a lot of devotion to his craft. If he runs a 4.9 (Never happen) I would still go by what I saw and draft him just in the 2nd or 3rd round.

His first few steps are ferocious and I think his hand play is outstanding! He defeats some blocks like a ghost going right through the guy. Lastly when I watch him play I just feel secure about nothing getting wide on him. He makes the play or forces the action back inside so well.

Great stuff, I hope the Fin brass is seeing it similarly.

Cheers,

just not worth 12th overall... Trade down get another 2nd or 3rd rd pick

Travis anderson , maybe you'll get unblocked when you stop Impersonating people on here jackaZZZZZZZZZ !!!

mrmrjohnson

It's ridiculous that you don't understand gl;obal warming and that scientist all over the world are in consensus as to the how man made emissions has excellerated the process.

Try turing on your car in the garage with your windows down and just chill in the front seat for about an hour and see how that hits ya. lol

Dolphins4life,

Great takes on your Parcells assessment. That is the part of the equation that scares me the most. Will Parcell's & Co put too much emphasis on the arm length or height and let a total beast of a stud slip through the net?

Leading the nation in TFL's, the many sacks and great tackle totals he racked up is incredible! Plus in watching him extensively he pressures and hits the QB a TON of times a split second after he releases it. That is the type of invisible punishment that takes it's toll on QBs and causes happy feet and bad throws/Ints.

Brady and Sanchez will rue the day the Fins tab Graham if they do. BG fans can only pray and hope.

Cheers,

Somehow he has to be a Dolphin. Him and wake would be wicked.

Great speed from the edges.

Rob in OC

Graham is fast and he will have a good forty time, those numbers you saw regarding his forty are when he gained the weight to play DE, I'm not so sure how accurate those times are, but one thing is for sure he will run the forty and we will see a good time.

But what I would love to see is his bench press, I said he was gonna do 40 reps of 225lbs, that would be awsome. I think after all is said and done and his measurables are in he will move up even more after the combine and Senior bowl.

Now this year's draft is full of DE/OLB that can play in the 3-4 so wheather Parcells waits and picks a NT or ILB first then add a OLB later is another story. So hold on to your hats because its gonna be a fun ride.

GoDolphins!

beerphin,

I used to have that as the ultimate perfect scenario...the sweet trade back and get Graham 22-28 range. First you have to get the partner that won't take your guy which is no cinch nowadays.

I now feel that coupled with his great Bowl Game, MVP performance and super week of practice at the Senior Bowl that he keeps climbing higher. It is said every year that a player shouldn't drastically climb but it only takes one boneheaded Raider (DHB) type pick and there goes the grand plan.

Sure they can cover and maybe take Dan Williams or Sean Weatherspoon late if they are still even there but it's not the same as getting your targeted 1st choice.

There are a number of workable scenarios that the Fins can wind up with that I think will be good but from a pure talented player standpoint I like any scenario the best with Graham in it rather than not.

Cheers,

if we can trade back and get some extra picks in the 2nd or 3rd rd. i say hell yeah grab him, the guy is a beast and will our def. better from day one.Kid has like 5 or 6 pass rush moves, that unheard of from a college DE.

Sorry typo:
Graham said...

Yup Rob
But I dont think that will be the biggest factor, it might be that this draft is so full of DE/OLB that may be as much if not more confusing to what Parcells and Co will do than his arm length, because Graham's numbers DO NOT LIE...sacks, tfl, and playing in a big time program (Michigan) which Parcells covets also has to bode well for Graham, but it's the depth of his position that might make him take a shot at, say, a talented but less accomplished Camron Sheffield of Troy...another Demarcus Ware type with long arms and big hands and some speed also what Parcells likes...so who knows.

I think hands down, to me that Brandon Graham is the best at his position and might have the most impact over the next five years than any other player on D, taken in this years draft.

We shall see...

Can graham play wr ?

Good night ya'll
Have a good night and God bless us all.

GoDolphins! We will be back in the high-life again!
Till then keep the faith!

Dolphins4life,

That DE/OLB depth can be problematic and helpful in the same breath. In my grand plan they land Dansby and play him next to Crowder. Then they snag Graham in the 1st and hopefully can finagle a trade back and still do the math and land him plus get the extra pick(s).

As for getting to the QB AND being a force vs the run I have BG the highest of any in the draft. Maybe the undecidedness of his drop ability will cause him to slip some and the trade back scenario would be fine?

I don't know how you have the OLB stacked talent wise, my list goes...

Graham
Hughes
Weatherspoon (I think he can play ILB too which adds huge value)
Pierre Paul (Needs work but more tools than most others)
Kindle
Bowman
Norwood

I see Morgan as more of pure DE but if he could make the switch to OLB right before or after Spoon on this list.

What does you list look like?

Cheers,

Mark in Ot @2:01,

I am sure Nolan could squeeze the crap outta some pockets with that duo!!

Cheers,

Ev,

Too true, he has some KILLER hand techniques and moves.

Shoulder Dip... Check!
Spin Move... Check!
Bull Rush... Check!
Rip... Check!
Okey Doke... Check! (LOL, well i made that one up but... ;)

Cheers,

Indiana Dolfan @2:17,

Not yet but I like your thinking Indiana!! LOL.

Nah... just kidding, he has trouble catching with his T-Rex arms. =)

I know if an entire blog thread is on a guy that is not tops on your list it can sound like a ton of rhetoric. I am sure that between now and draft day since Mando will rotate the topics other players will have their day in the sun.

Who are your top 2 or three choices for 1st round?

Cheers,

Rob in OC...I love your posts man...keep up the good work...Derek in WQAM....keep flippin burgers pal, you have no idea..!

Alfy from Ozzzzzzzzzzz

Hey Bigalfy!

Thanks a bundle mate! If I EVER take a trip Down Under I will look you up. Maybe catch a Fins game at the bar... A win I hope.

Is Foster's really popular to Aussies or no? I have heard conflicting things.

Cheers,

So you think it would be smart to take a player in the first round and "see" if he can play OLB.

ARE YOU GUYS FU++ING for real.

Can anyone say VERNON GHOLSTON

I would like to get a player who has played the postion they will play in the pros.

If that's the case MAYS is 6'3 230 and runs a 4.2 let's make him an OLB or a WR not saying GRAHAM can't make the switch but take the risk with the first pick.

Some have him in the late first or early second plus we already have WAKE as a project.
Why take on more.

ALLEN,WHITE,WAKE,GINN,

THAT's ENOUGH PROJECTS.

WE NEED PEOPLE TO CONTRIBUTE AND FEEL COMFORTABLE ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE DOING NOT SOMEONE THAT's THINKING BECAUSE HE NEVER PLAYED THE OLB POSITION.

Justin Credible,

That's a LOT of CAPS and huffing for NOT giving us your choice?

Let's have it...who is your CAN'T MISS wonder choice that is without fail going to be a Pro Bowler or better yet, Hall of Famer because he has played the same position?

Cheers,

agree with justin credible,

can he cover, is it worth the risk? id prefer a first rounder to be a lock!

lucky for us we have parcells sitting in the captains seat - im sure he knows who the best guy is if we're going for a backer!!

here's to another good draft and anoter step forwarde for the fish.

Rob in O.C can really bring it...yea,like the posts.Keep the mind sharp

Dolphins4life...get a clue. Have you completely tuned out the news for the past year? Personal attacks are your best bet though because the facts sure aren't on your side.

Just to update you since you've apparently been living in a cave.......

1. Scientist now agree (even Al Gore's favorite scientist) that the Earth's temperature has cooled in recent years.

2. The leading scientist for manmade global warming admitted he doctored his results and destroyed data.

3. Al Gore's scientist admitted this past week in a BBC interview that any increases in the Earth's temperature DO NOT have anything with man made global warming. He said that the same increases have occurred at least 5 times in the last 300 years. THIS WAS THE GUY THAT AL GORE BASED HIS WHOLE MOVIE ON. LOL. He completely reversed everything after he admitted he falsified data.

Wake up, man! Your living in the past. Get the CURRENT facts on the subject that have come to light in the past 6 months.

Maybe you need to hear it from a trusted lefty stoner source. Here's Jon Stewart talking about the news from months ago (Maybe he even reported on the BBC interview with the disgraced Al Gore scientist last week).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVe09mkyVqg

The hatred from liberals is something though.....they disagree with you and instead of pointing out facts, they personally attack the messenger and wish death upon people who point out the err of their ways. Anything to keep from seeing the truth.

payuengsnwings,

Thanks bro! I appreciate the shout and will try to post when I can.

Cheers,

Pierre Paul is an interesting prospect.

Very, very raw but has lots of upside.

Here is a video of him doing back handsprings in a contest vs a much smaller man.

The guy is super athletic:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4-1e6Faglw&feature=related

They don't mean anything more to football than to illustrate his flexibility and athleticism.

Cheers

what's up early morning fin fans? i read alot of posts but don't comment much anymore. it seems to me as much as miami needs a NT everyone complains miami's olb's couldn't set the edge against the run . i say draft lb's first then give big paul someone who can give him a breather. the guy looked “bad” because he was out there almost every single play after fergeson went down. mcdaniels tried but he is a de. graham would be a great pick at number 12. fast strong instintive and played in a pro defense most of his college career. and his last year under rich rod he still tore it up which shows his versatility.

Rob in OC , YOU DIDN'T SLEEP LAST NIGHT MAN , DO YOU HAVE A JOB ?

I do not have an issue drafting Graham

I think they should cull from the following:
Graham
McClain
Williams
Bryant.

armando,
the people of pompeii had signs of coming disaster, but there where probably ignorant people telling the people don't worry it's not going to erupt!
I guess in that case, the ignorant led the ignorant to their death.
hey, ignorant, climate change is a more accurate description of what's happening because of climate warming.
no,no but keep thinking like you do and when mount vesuvius erupts, the nashing and grinding of the teeth is the only thing left,oh well.

I still don't think he's worth the #12 pick. You can get him later.

More importantly, you bring up Eric Berry and I'll just say this. If Berry is somehow on the board at #12 - which has about a .000001% chance of happening - the Dolphins HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO TAKE HIM. He's a poor man's Ed Reed and instantly changes this defense from the moment he straps on his cleats.

He's going to be an elite free safety. It's that simple.

mcshay and kiper are jerkoffs how many picks do they even get correct. graham would be a safe pick he put on a show at the senior bowl, being from the north east I get to see a lot of big ten football he played hard all year also if we go with mcclain we need to see if bowman from penn state is around in the second rd. this guy has play maker written all over him.

we have so many holes to fill! a trade for brandon marshall would be nice. we probably should trade down to get more picks so we can stock the defense and give mike nolan something to work with. mike singletary and rex ryan are just 2 new coaches who have turned defenses around quickly. alot of wasted picks last year (pat white never completed a pass);also we've got to be able to stop somebody when it counts. sparano has to raise the level of his coaching (more strategy, better decisions and adjustments, less cheerleading).

To the poor souls who actually believe in man made global warming,

Please use common sense.

1. If the meteorologists can not predict the local weather accurately, how can you trust they can predict global weather patterns.

2. There have been 2 known ice ages on earth, possibly 40. Question: how did all the ice melt without the burning of fossil fuels?

3. Did you ever hear of solar radiation?

4. Al Gore is part owner in a company that will make billions if Cap and Tax policies are adopted.

5. Thermometers were only invented in the near distant past. When they were invented the earth was coming out of a mini ice age, so the temp. was only going to rise.

6. Why does Al Gore still fly in private jets and ride in limousines. I thought pollution was bad. Can you not see the hypocrisy?

O.C

I would draft by need and need alone.

sign DANSBY and WILFORK or HAMPTON

draft BRYANT and LEFALL 1 and 2

go get two of whatever

McCAIN and SPIKES don't sound bad

KINDLE and GRAHAM sounds good also

I'm not saying don't get him but at 12 no.

Timm13,

I have to assume that you are a little kid who has been brainwashed at your local public school because you sound extremely young and foolish. In the 1970’s the same scientists said the earth was experiencing global cooling. Then as they realized the earth’s temp was increasing they switched to global warming. Now we call it climate change to encompass every weather pattern.

1. The warmest year on record is 1998... In case you cant subtratc either that’s 12 years ago little guy.

2. There were no hurricanes in 2009. Everytime there is a hurricane they attribute it to global warming, what about when there are no hurricanes. Is global warming going away.

3. Do you think your teachers actually know science. All Gore said the debate was over. If you teacher understood science they would tell you science is an endless debate. Debate is a good thing. Why does your home bay Gore wanna end debate?

C’mon timmy explain to me how global warming works!

I don't disagree with drafting Graham, just not at 12. If he's projected to go at 20-32, then trade down FIRST and then get Graham. Always get the most value for your high pick.

Dolphins4life,

Give me a break. We understand all right… we understand that you cannot think on your own. We understand how junk science works. You my friend need to read. There are over 700 hundred scientists from around the world who said global warming is not man made. The UN scientist were caught falsifying data and taking data from a runners magazine and a students term paper. These weren’t accurate tests and they haven’t been duplicated or retried either.

As far as turning the car on in your garage.. Are you an idiot or just mentally handicapped? The dimensions are no where near the same. Did your teacher teach you that? Wow that’s so intelligent. Real good argument… from someone with drool running down the side of their face.

Well Greg Z... I dont know if you are new in here or what i dont recognize the name but lets clear a few things up.... Brandon Marshall not happening... EVER!!! Pat White not completing a pass doesnt mean anything... Use your head as im sure you arent much of an athlete but if you are could you stand on the sidelines all game be put out there for one throw with our being warmed up. Without taking many snaps in practice. Oh yeah and its your rookie year in the NFL. Please think before you speak!!!!!!!!!!

Armando,

I will seriously consider joining your twitter thingy if you keep Travis blocked lol!

Global warming?????? Who cares??????????

Watching Mclain from Alabama, I'd say you could write the same article on him. Only he will be elite for sure, whereas Graham I think will be good, but is not a sure thing.

This is all well and good Mando, but McClain may very well be the next Ray Lewis. Imagine that impact the next 10 years. As good as Graham may be, how do you pass up McClain. Normally, this guy would be a top five pick, it's a blessing that he just might be available at 12!

I think because we have ILB that are not great but they can get the job done makes us go OLB first. Because we have no one there except wake and we dont know if he will play all three downs or not.........

Armando, why dont you go out on a limb.

If this guy can't produce 8 or more sacks his rookie year, you will shave your head.

For every sack over 8 he makes, we will give you a pat on the back.

Armando has a man crush lol.

Armando,

I enjoy reading your football blog and even the non-football writings, such as your mother's passing, some of the political stuff, and even this global warming thing.

Some might call it foolish to interject politics with sports or church or whatever, but I admire your character and integrity to write what you think, especially since you are in the minority viewpoint.

Anyhow, thank you.

BTW, global warming is a lie for no other reason to make money on your backs and to gain control. Gore has made millions-where is the story? The researchers will have a job and power. And you will have more bills to pay for lighting your house. Lies.

I don't know; I've always been wary of those that refer to themselves in the third person.

Mando,

I couldn't agree with you more!!! I love this guy too and I don't understand why he is not getting a lot of love from the media, but who cares if it works in our favor. I think he will be a star.

Mando, I love the fact you block the global warming bafoon.

The main cause of weather increase and decrease is solar activity (flares). Disbeleivers - Please refer to the mini-ice age we are coming out of, that made parts of Europe stop drinking the delicate grape (wine) and drinking a more hearty grain (beer).
