Combine opens and that calls for a live blog

The NFL Scouting Combine begins today in Indianapolis and the Dolphins will kick it off by making general manager Jeff Ireland available to the media sometime between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

I am not in Indianapolis (been there, done that) but will be monitoring the action throughout the day on this blog. I will be here throughout the day to interact with you, to tell you of the latest happenings, to answer questions, to basically blog live for hours on end.

I cannot wait!

I will provide you with the most up-to-the-minute news and analysis delivered through the vast worldwide resources of The Miami Herald -- beat writer Jeff Darlington is in Indy covering the event and I have a television, a computer and a fully charged iPhone. Brain overload!

There will be other features on here throughout the six-day Combine as well that I will tell you about at the appropriate time.

So what's my point? Be here throughout the day for the event. It's a great way to pass the day away at work.

Now, I would warn you that the Combine is a time when approximately 400 team personnel people, 400 media, 300 athletes and 200 or so agents come together in the same place. Not surprisingly, rumors fly.

Some of the rumors are worth repeating -- for example Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tweeted Wednesday evening that word on the street is the Dolphins will "pay" Karlos Dansby.

Of course, that doesn't preclude other teams from wanting to "pay" Dansby, too. So I would not say it's 100 percent the Dolphins are going to land the Arizona inside linebacker when free agency begins March 5. I would tell you they have studied Dansby and like Dansby a lot.

But that's a looong way from absolutely resolving to sign the guy no matter the price. Miami is not going to do that. So be wary.

Another rumor yesterday that I only repeat so that I can mock it is this one saying the Dolphins and Lions have a trade brewing that will send running back Ronnie Brown, a first-round pick and perhaps a third round pick to Detroit for wide receiver Calvin Johnson.

And now that I told you what the rumor is, I tell you there is no truth to it. The Lions are indeed looking to trade, but mostly it is to trade down in the draft. The Dolphins are willing to trade just about anyone on the roster, including Brown, but him, the first pick, and a third pick is a ransom for anyone not named Manning or Rivers or Brady or Brees.

I'm just relaying rumor to you as an example of how anyone without sources or attribution can simply piece a paragraph together (poorly) and pass it off as reporting.

Anyway, if you can't get to the blog throughout the day, you can follow me on twitter, as I'll be sending out messages there as well. Yes, you can get the tweets to your phone.

I'll be here starting around 10ish.

Armando is going to be a few minutes late. He is spanking himself one time for each Twitter follower he has. It's just a fetish. Don't mock him about it.

Morning Fins nation! We ready to rumble?

Mark in Toronto,

You get what you pay for? Ever heard of a guy name Gibril Wilson?

Get dansby and rolle and draft dez

Mark,

I'm not sure I would call Dansby young. He's 28 and will be 29 during the season. He has six years of wear playing in the NFL. Cetainly not old by any means and in fact he is likely in his prime but I'm not sure I would call him young. Fair?

We got an 8 million dollar turd

Just tell me when Mclain runs too slow in your opinion so you can nullify his 3 year all american career due to some stupid 40.

Dear Mr. Salguero,

I am agitated. My concerns today are as fillow:

1) No Dolphins beat reporter in Indy? Jeez what a cheap operation. This fish wrap stinks.

2) Why is the combine always in Indy? So Polian can sit on his butt and shmooze with the players, agents. This is almost as bad as Detroit and Dallas always hosting Thanksgiving day games or Miami hosting every 4th or 5th SB. Or even worse the fins never showing up as hosts.

3) The damn janitor at work here always puts the toilet paper roll on the dispenser backwards and the roll is oversized so that I am alotted a single square on single ply tp which a) not only has no absorbancy - but appears to fabricated of some eco friendly textile which is resistant to poop and b) exhibits the textural consistency of 60 grit sandpaper. This leaves yours truly in a bit of a quandry when I am experiencing one of those days where the consistency is not unlike that of Jif peanut butter and no matter how many daintly adminitered swabs are performed, there is a general consensus between my butt cheeks that all is not well.

Deeply concerned,
PW

How arrogant do you have to be to come into a writers blog and tell the readers you will be answering questions about the combine because youre watching it on tv. Thats wrong on so many levels. you arent a reporter or a nfl guy. And you dont write for the herald or have a blog so you come intyo someone elses blog and try to take it over by holdoing your own q&a session. What a jerkoff

Players already being measured today (height, wt, arms)

Gronkowski TE out of Arizona:

6062 264 and 34 1/2 inch long arms. Now that's a wingspan!

Why not get all those Cardinals? Lets pay Dansby, Rolle, and trade for Boldin!

There is no cap, i know we are not hurting that much on the salary cap.

Think about acquiring those players, the draft would be very interesting!

bobbyd12 - I understand bobbyd12. I'm just tired (somewhat) of Miami signing 2nd teir FA's and them not working out. Go after the studs!!

I'm starting to think Kindle is going to be our pick and that scares me!! I think he has bust written all over him. He doesn't seem like a complete football player to me. I'm not big on these guys that are one dimensional and that's what I think he is. And I think he has character issues that will be made worse by playing in Miami. Anyone else feel this way too?

I heard a combine rumor that the real reason the Chargers cut L.T. was that horrible music video he made... "no thats not good call"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6_JEpMO_MM

This just in: Darlington has opted not to participate in the typing skills test at the Combine. After producing an average of just 1.15 blog posts per month, his agent didn't want him to look bad. He will, however, hold a typing display at his home office, where he feels more comfortable.

Armando - We were born ready!!

I'm seeing a lot of hostility on the early comments today.

Why?

The sweat under Rex Ryan's overhanging gut - SHUT UP and talk football. We don't need to hear you bashing the Herald guys. If you don't like them, don't come to their website

we need to fix or improve straight up the middle of our defense. the 3 most important positions on D are: NT,MLB,FS they are the heart of the defense, look at the the saints, mediocre defense but good up the middle:
DT- sedrick Ellis: 1st rd pick
LB- J. Vilma: pro bowler calibur, captain
FS- D sharper: pro bowler
steelers: hampton,farrior, polumalu
ravens: ngata,ray lewis,ed reed

we need to get dansby, draft either dan williams or cam thomas and draft earl thomas or get antrel rolle along with a young LB to groom and we will be vastly superior on Defense.

Former Dolphins OC Chan Gailey, now the Bills head coach, will talk to the media at 10:30 this a.m.

I'll post anything that affects the Dolphins.

No hostility hear unless there are idiots bashing people for no reason -- hence my last post point!

Armando,

How fat is Cody? Any guesses?

I'll put 20 bucks on 383... call it a gut feeling

By the way, it is clear by reading some of your posts that either you don't read to well or I don't write well.

1. The Herald DOES have a reporter in Indy.
2. The Detroit Ronnie Brown for Cal Johnson rumor is not accurate!

"Gut" feeling. That's hilarious!

Phins54... i agree..... that's WACK!! LOL

man we need a tight end that can stretch the field!

Armando,

I think it's the stress of this whole process. Probably like you, a lot of us realize the Dolphins have a lot of needs to fill and a lot of different directions to go. I think free agency needs to get here, so that we can start feeling good about our team again. I think we need to find some reasons for optimism. I think this is a big off-season and I think we all just want to see the right moves made.

Read "to" well. I love when people criticize other people for their lack of reading/writing skills, but then they screw up that criticism with poor writing skills.

USC TE Anthony McCoy 6044 259 34-inch long arms.

So you understand the height, you read the last number as eighths. So McCoy's heigh is 6-4 1/2.

Armando... i say its most likely #1

they missed your point about how rumors tend to fly around up there in Ind. regardless of how crazy they sound.

Completely understand Craig M.

I seriously do hope the moves work out this offseason. Trust me guys, it is no fun covering a team that does not win.

I think the Dolphins will make good moves this offseason. And I've been more encouraged of late because I keep hearing whispers that WR is not off the table early in the draft, which as everyone knows is MY pet peeve about this administration.

Armando dont mean to be hostile but really come on already. someone came in here and said they would also be holding a q&a in here during the combine. I thought this was your blog you know?

Gotchat Jersey.

Once again, the Calvin Johnson rumor is not true. I guess I should not have even published it.

Phins54:

When I started visiting this blog, I used to see those type of comments from NJ PHIN FAN and thought "what a jerk", but then I realised he was joking and now I actually find it quite funny. The problem is people doesn't realise the guy is just playing around. He actually knows some football.

It reminds me of a guy who used to come here to suggest all these stupid trades, like "why don't we send Gebril to the Pats for Wilfork and a second, that would solve our problems at NT and with the second we could draft Earl Thomas, any thoughts?" People would get really pissed at him for saying stupidities; it used to crack me up. I think the name was Mr. Bungle.

Anyone wanna come shovel some snow?

That's good news about WR, Armando. Hopefully there is someone good available for us in the second or third round. I know it's been debated to death but as much as I like Bryant I just don't see it happening in the first round.

I am sure everything will work out in the end. I believe the trifecta has a god handle on things. We just need to get through the next couple of months until everything comes together.

Got to check out guys....I'll catch up later!!

GO CANADA!!!!

Hey, I used to be the fake Mr. Bungle here! I'm glad you enjoyed that stuff!

Dez Bryant Mando - gotta love it!

Didn't see that Phins54: I'll tell you how I feel about that. I want this to be YOUR home for Dolphins talk and Dolphins information and analysis.

If you want to vent, vent. If you want to chat, chat.

If you want to rip me, you can do that, too. I'm a big boy.

And my ego isn't so big as to think somebody off the street can distract from what I'm doing. I also think you guys are very intelligent fans. That's why we sometimes disagree. You guys think for yourselves.

So you know what is real is what is cowdung.

I hated the real Mr. Bungle because he was an arrogant know-it-all, so I posted BS stuff using that name. He got so mad, he changed his name to "The Knight who says Ni." I even created a fake blog with the worst mock draft ever. http://mrbunglesfins.blogspot.com/

He was so pissed! Haha.

Hey mando if the dolfins get a Carlos dansby in free agency do you think they will still draft Rolando or do they go outside linbacker.

Mr Bungle has changed his "handle" and rarely comes to this blog or posts here anymore.

Somehow the blog has survived without him.

Gronkowski, there is a guy I hope the Fins can pick up if he falls to the third...

hey Armando... since the WR position has been a "pet peeve" for you, and i can totally understand why, and in your past mentions you mentioned the need for help at some Def spots, (adopting Graham)are you saying you would support an early draft pick on a WR???

The blog is better without him.

By the way, Mike Singletary has just said "Alex Smith is our starter," so the guy picked before Ronnie Brown in the 2005 draft isn't a bust just yet.

I was all hyped for the combine to start today and come to find out the real stuff doesnt start till sat.

lame...

Mando, when does Ireland answer questions? What's the format?

OMG Alex Smith... he's not that good....lol to think he was #1 overall WOW

JerseyPhins, I would not only support the idea, I'd get out pom-poms and do a cheer!

I have said many times that the NFL is a PASSING league now. And it makes me crazy that was everyone else is focusing on throwing the ball better, the Dolphins focus on running more.

I'm not asking they throw on every down, but COME ON, Man!

You think Gronkowski is value in the third, bobby?

Interviews are very important and are a big part of the combine - just not interesting for us to watch.

The FA moves we make will really determine what we draft. If we find some solid players on defense in FA market we may go WR with #12 pick, but if we still have the holes we have currently on defense, the front office is going defense I believe. What defensive spot will be the best defensive player available that will benefit us the most. It may not be the best player available, but as Sparano says he will be a man that fits the "right 53" not the "best 53"

Armando, how would you feel about Dez Bryant @12 to the Dolphins?

You're all wrong and I am RIGHT!!!!

Dolphindata, if the Dolphins get Dansby, I don't see how McClain would be the pick.

Typically this administration has had a strategy about addressing needs. And they don't double-dip FA to draft. They might double dip in the draft -- 2 CBs, 2 WRs, 2 DEs.

But they don't do that by paying big money in FA and then picking the same position in the draft.

Sweat,
That was good stuff. Sometimes I laughed so loud at the office that some heads turned. Indeed good stuff.

Armando...
i feel ya pain brother! i grew up watching Marino and the Marks brothers. almost passed out w/the Ginn pick GGRRRRR... but we just have NOOOO play making ability at the spot. but w/that said, we need to fix the D side of the ball too. great job!

Mando, can you post Clay Harbor's Height and weight when that is available. Thanks

if your injured your out of here. period. bye brown thanks for coming. hes not the only rb out there. sure hes a beast but if you cant stay healthy your out of here.
