Free agency on the way -- one way or another

Well, salary cap or no, there will be some sort of free agency starting on March 5. On Wednesday the NFL released the list of veterans with at least six credited seasons and an expiring contract that would constitute the sadly diminished class of 2010 unrestricted free agents should there be no new collective bargaining agreement and thus no salary cap.

Check out the list. There are 236 players on it along with the agents that represent them.

There are a couple of interesting names -- Karlos Dansby, Julius Peppers, Chad Pennington. And some of these guys will contribute to teams in 2010, no doubt about that.

So you tell me which ones you would target for the Dolphins.

One more thing: I included the names of the agents that represent these guys so note Jason Ferguson's agent. Jimmy Sexton represents the soon-to-be free agent nose tackle. Sexton also represents Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano.

Translation: If Ferguson is going to play in 2010, the Dolphins will get first dibs on him. No doubt about that.

Damn thats a long list Armando!!!

Might remind some of my earlier posts, LOL.

I know the list is long and comprehensive.

I only need ONE single FA off of it to make my FA period start off right for our Fins...

Karlos Dansby ILB / OLB good all around player and tackler! He would start the revamping process of the LB's off very nicely!

Others I might kick the tires on if I didnt land Dansby...

Ryan Clark FS Pit (Ask Pat White if he can play)
Darren Sharper FS (N.O. won't let him walk)
Pisa Tinoisamoa OLB (If he's healthy he was playing well from what I had heard)

It's all about asking price and draft strategy which are 2 things we are not privy to.

LOL, wow accrued seasons P Jeff Feagles 22 years. LB Jr. Seau 19 years. He was something else in his heyday.

Cheers,

LOL, NJ PHIN... you beat me to my own joke!

Cheers,

GO to bed NJ PHIN!

Lets get Vince Wilfork and Larry Johnson to replace Ricky Williams after he retires next year.

Vince Wilfork, just to drive up NE Salary
Banta-Cain, Pennington, Antonio Bryant, Casey Hampton, Tracy White, Karlos Danby... don't have to get them all, just a couple. Try and see if you can shake things up. Pennington had a bad year last year. This year he should be great.
Banta-Cain out of NE played very well. I would also add Darren Sharper. I heard Hollywood is looking for another Gerbil to jam, so he should probably go to Oakland to play.

If there is one huge failure with this regime.....can weall admit it's what we've done (and haven't done) in free agency? Not much good, if any. We hold on to bad draft picks too long instead. Lastly, why not get Vince wilfork? Finally have a dolphin get back at a patriot, instead of the oter way around (wilfork, seau, etc)

Grazing through the list I could find a few names that we may have a shot at...
#1 Karlos Dansby, ILB... I think we all would love to see this deal happen... would change the dynamic of our entire draft and point at a few play makers instead of core players.
#2 Josh Reed, WR out of Buffalo, would not answer all the needs. But, I think if you put him with QB who can get him the ball... good things could happen.
#3 Antonio Bryant, WR (getting the gist here?) Antonio would bring a #1 capability to our receiving corps. He may not be the best... but he would be able to stretch the field and keep some D-backs busy in the process.
#4 Jimmy Kennedy, NT.... Jimmy has been around. A former #13 pick who has struggled big time... but has never really been in a system that could benefit from him. He is a stretch at best... but may be a rotation guy if we needed one.
One guy missing here is Anquan Boldin, WR.... He would be the guy Miami really would like to have... he could also set our draft back by as many as two years. If he works out... Management is a hero... if not... well you know the rhyme...?
I would hope Miami get their share of shots at some of these guys, but still believe our future is in the draft.

The trick to free agency to me is to identify the players on your team that are good but not great or getting past their prime and have a trade value. You find a comperable free agent to sign so you can trade the existing player to have more power in the draft.

jeezz...slim pickings in the free agent market. Once Wilfork is officially tagged, there won't be any real solutions there.

Inimounts.......... Help me out with these..."Bad Draft picks"... not certain who you mean..?
Davis...?
Smith...?
Henne...?
Hartline....?
Long....?
Merling...?
Langford...?
Dotson...?
Clemmons...?
Folsom...?
Nalbone...?
Some of these guys have already broke into starting roles... some are just getting started and you a ready to say their failures???
Then in Free agency... Smiley, Grove, Wake,
Miami has missed the mark with picks and FA grabs... just like every other club in the NFL with some of their shots... its gonna happen. But I will tell you this much..Inimounts..... you do not build a team in free agency... you build it in the draft and supplement it with FA. The "IDEA" that you are getting a "PROVEN PLAYER" in free agency is completely discounted by the fact the player is moving to a new system... one he may not do well in. He is getting what he wants... A fat check... and like so many before him decides to start building a family and enjoying the good life on our teams payroll... while not putting up anywhere near the numbers he did to get that check in the fists place... Oldest game since free agency started.
Miami has done very well in most cases in their picks... if you don't remember what its like to have a guy like Wanny dumping every pick and your future for all these "Sure Bets"... then you don't understand why so Dolphins fans don't want to hear about how "Great" some other teams player is... We can make our own "Great" players... they are not grow on special trees that only exist in other teams locker rooms.

Derek...your an imbecile...look at your list buddy..FOLSOM.???...wheres he at...Dotson??Nalbone ...wasnt he a 4th or 5th.???..get real...they have very clearly made lots of mistakes...Pat White is a disaster...also.EW,GW and other crappy FA's...Eric Green.???....look theyve done OK...but this year will tell the story...lets see what they do..If they dont get some serious offensive weapon....then MEDIOCRITY here we come again..!!!

Wilfork and Dansby both. Spend the money on these two proven players and then go BPA in the draft for depth.

my dolphins wish list to get 3-4 of these guys in here 1.dansby 2.antoino bryant 3.te watson of the pats 4.casey hampton 5.fujita or foote 6. maybe longshots to land here but vanden bosch or chester taylor also would be wish pickups.what you think armando???????? p.s. i predict we will aquire boldin write it in stone! when this happens we no longer need to go after bryant.

Banta-Cain would be nice, but I think he'll re-sign

Is Randy McMichael worth a 2nd look? It isn't as if our TEs have lit up the league and we may yet cut 1 of them anyway. He has serviceable numbers for a guy in St. Louis' offense.

I would target Dansby and Julius Peppers on defense, which would take care of the two most pressing needs (ILB and OLB) for the phins assuming Vince W. is tagged by the Pats (if not, he would be top target) and at the right price, would bring back for depth vonnie Holliday. On offense, I would target Antonio Bryant, Cassim Osgood, and bring back Chad P.

Forget Wilfork people, ain't gonna happen. Dansby's realistic, so is Foote and would change the first round draft pick to either E. Berry; if God willing he's available, or Dez Bryant. If neither are available a trade down to pick up perhaps CL Spiller would surprise most followed by Dan Williams at NT.

I wouldn't be surprised if we picked a free agent for every position of need and looked to the draft for redundancy. That being said my wish list would be:

Dansby (or Foote) at ILB
Ryan Clark at FS
Banta-Cain at OLB
Casey Hampton at NT
Josh Reed at WR
Vanden Bosch- at DE
LJ Smith at TE

Would cost us out the ying-yang, but hey isn't it an uncapped year?

For ILB's #1 Dansby #2 Larry Foote
NT #1 Wilfork #2 Casey Hampton, #3 Ryan Pickett, #4 Tank Johnson
WR #1 Antonio Bryant
OLB Aaron Kampmen (I think GB converted him from DE to OLB and he's a work in progress but he's a hard worker and probably will be better)

Doubt NE would let us acquire Wilfork but if they would clearly he should be top priority. Then Bryant. Then Dansby,

Dansby(ARZ), Hampton(Pitt), Ben Watson(N.E.), Wilfork(N.E.).
Wilfork will likely be tagged. But hey,it's a wish list. That would make Watson an easier target. He is represented by Rosenhaus though, which could chill Parcells on him. What seems to be a problem for Miami in free agency is, they try to be frugal with the better players. By the time they decide to pay someone, the first tier players are gone, leaving them desperate. Giving this monopoly money to the likes of Wilford and Wilson is embarrassing. Go after the player you want in first tier and pay him.

WOW, there are a lot of guys on that list that could help the Dolphins - numersous names at Guard, LB, NT, and Safety.

Bigafly... your a moron... moron.... Did you see Pat Whites name anywhere in my list?... He was not because he was IMHO... a mistake. So, you are ready to declare some of these players who have not 20 starts between them.... losers and busts? Common dude!... use what is left of your Dope smoked out head of yours and stop diddling your junk!.... These guy may be role players... but roll players win games...Idiot. For all the pathetic bloviating you did.... you failed to recognize what Miami DID DO right... you useless worthless slime of humanity... (See what happens when ya start calling people names...Idiot... They do it right back... Huh... Moron?) Why not drag your sorry carcass back to whatever rock you crawled out from under and leave the Drafting to the experts... you useless gutless balless, mommies underwear sniffing fool.... And call your wife.... I am sick of here gargling my Nuts....

Sign the ENTIRE list. No matter what the cost.

Then trade down and get multiple picks.

Next problem?

Now...
I still think Dansby is the guy who will make the biggest change in our drafting this season. If they grab him, or are wiling to pay whatever his tag will be... they can take a much stronger tack at a guy like Bryant. Whom I still think they should grab if there at #12. Dansby opens up the front end of the draft, They could even trade down, get another #2 and grab Williams at the bottom of the first round, he is not that far above the others in this class... 2 #2 picks and Dansby would be a nice deal for Miami. CJ Spiller is a though... but a RB... Really?... we have 7 on the roster Cobbs, Williams, Brown, Tristan Davis, Lex Hilliard, Polite (at FB) and Kory Sheets... we have a buch of talent there... why add CJ when there are other pressing matters. If Bryant is there, ya gotta take him. If Dansby comes in, you can trade down to a low #1 get another 2 and grab Dan Williams as a NT and then start stacking the Offensive play makers.

jets, mets, nets...pfft. How stupid are the fans in NJ?

Is there anyone else who is not crazy on here? I see people talking trash about how Parcells and Co. do not draft well or find good FA… are you kidding? Look at the canvas this team started with. BIGAFLY, why throw insults at fellow fin fans? Show some respect. We are in this together.

Edison failed over 2000 times when he tried to invent the light bulb, thank God he didn’t give up and start crying about a few bad ones. 2010 is the Dolphins year!

Did this team strike out a few times? Yes but can you name me one MLB player that never struck out? I am sorry you cannot see a players future potential. I defend the trifecta’s choices. We are lucky to have them. The future looks bright, have faith, stay positive. Essentially, DON’T BE A WET FAN

Who was the last coach to win the AFC east for Miami other than Sporano? How many years ago? Come on brother we are a way better team than the past 6-7-8 years. We finally have a first rate future star QB! Let Parcells do his thing. He is not a one year, rather a 3 year team builder… so get ready

ryan clark, chester taylor ,dansby or foote should be the free agents that we go after. please trade ginn and ayodele.

VOTE YES FOR BANTA CAIN AND BEN WATSON
VOTE NO FOR JT and CHAD PENNE

Armando, in the words of Jeff Spicoli -

"Awesome. Totally awesome"

Thanks for this.

Waterboy - Change of mind on JT..??

Top ones to look at with not knowing who is going to get tagged: JT, Dansby, Wilfork, Foote, Peppers (2 out of these 5 will help our team)

Lets go with what is NOT gonna happen then look at list again..Wilfork or any Nose tackle, the draft is way to deep Dan Williams, Cam Thomas, Terrel Troupe to sign a FA nose tackle...Antonio Bryant, NOT gonna happen, has not only had problems with Mike Nolan who cut him in SF after one year after he signed a 4 year deal, but has had problems with Parcells in the past , ZERO chance...I still believe the Fins will pull the trigger and pick up Boldin, Arizona no longer needs him, he is no diva or troublemaker and it would solve are #1 receiver problem....Free safety, No way Parcells shells out big bucks for a free safety after giving Gibril big money and watching him bust...look for Clemons to step in and take over, ready or not...Karlie Dansby, NOT GONNA HAPPEN, one not worth what he wants and really, really wants to play for the G-Men, watch that happen...lastly any free agent over 30 or over...Dolphins are getting younger and some guy on the wrong side of 30 isn't gonna be around when this team hits it's stride, you don't want to have to replace a key player, you want these guys playing together for years so they can gel....And that's my opinion and being a fan of Parcells his entire career I believe that's who he WONT sign in this free agent class

Lets clear this up again because i have before and i know you all will just say that i am just a fan of his because he played at WV. But i will say again that anyone who says that Pat white was a mistake to pick is a moron because how can you judge a guy of the amount he played???????????? Tell me how you can do that????????? But back to the topic at hand i like :
Ben Watson
Ryan Clark
Alge Crumpler- use to be a force in Atlanta never found his place in Tenn.
Chester Taylor
Kevin Walter
Larry Foote

Lot's of ex-Dolphins on the list. At least the didn't stink just for us. Douches

I really do not think most people realize the impact Matt Roth had on the team in 2009. The two outside LBs where going to be Roth and Porter. JT and Wake were going to come in on passing downs.

Well Roth was out so JT saw significant playing time… he wore out and struggled against the run making him less effective against the pass. Everyone was tired in the 4th. Plus when you take into account the injury to Will Allen and that tool Gerbil Wilson in the secondary made the LB look bad n play a diff game plan.

JP is old but has a young heart. He only surrounds himself with people who tell him what he wants to hear. They say, “Joey your the best LB in all of football!” So JP has a distorted view of reality. JP killed the team unity that made us underdog winners in 2008. Ginn and JP killed our spirit.

And Wake will show improvement in 2010. He is a situational player that will excel when he finds his role.

We do need an upgrade at LB this year. But last years plan did not unfold how it was supposed to. That’s why you think it was a LB blunder. Now you know the real story.

bobbyd12 - We do not know how much Dansby will cost yet, so its unclear to say yes or no about him yet. I know he will probably want a lot, but we still don't know yet...

WestVaFins - I can agree with you on Pat White cannot be judged yet, but what I have a hard time trying to figure out with him is what position is he going to play?? We know it will not be QB, because Henne (Big Ten guy, LOL) is our future at that position. So, if you can make a push for where he is going to play and how he will help us I may lean towards him not being a complete bust. For our teams needs and our future he is a bust currently...

What in the h e l l are you talking about disciple that is the most incomprehensible post i have ever seen...

Karlos Dansby, Ben Watson, Vince Wilfork are the players in positions of need that are still young enough to be productive in a couple of years when this team is a power.

Older players worth noting, Larry Foote, Casey Hampton, and Julius Peppers. Got questions about the last one though. I'm not sure he would be a good fit at OLB since he's almost 300 lbs. He does seem like he really wants to do it though. Well, looks like NE will finally get their man. As Dolphins fans, we should be cheering for that move since Peppers will cost big money, enough money where it might free up Wilfork.

Nobody is talking about the diamond in the rough we have in practice squad: NAL-BONER, FOLSOM and 2nd year all world pro : Pat Turner.

It took 2 years for Mr. Lex Hillard to bust out into a serviceable RB.

Why do we dismiss last years draft picks like they should be cut?

perspective, I hear what you're saying. Their refusal to go after game changers and throw money at scrubs is maddening. 6 million for Wilford, 8 million for Wilson....WTF did these guys ever do to make Parcells think they were worth that kind of money? And then I hear fans say (pick a name) wants too much money. It makes me crazy. But the disturbing thing might be, Parcells thinks like that too.

Indiana, i dont think he is going to move positions. It takes guys right out of college that are starters as rookies sometimes three years to develop into a decent quarterback. Now take that into consideration and look at how many fewer snaps Pat had compared to a first year starter. NO comparison... No need for position change.... YET!!! He cant get any better being on the bench and not getting snaps in practice...

Waterboy dont you get it that people in here think that unless the guy makes the prowbowl his first season he is a bust whether he got to play or not. They are like well didnt see him this year must be a bust.... Complete MORONS'!!!!!!!!!!

WestVaFins, anybody that says a player is a bust his first year out of college is a football moron...Pat White might turn into a really good football player but you have to admit at this point in time it seems like a very strange pick because we have no clue what his role is on this team...maybe there is some master plan with Pat White but as fans, we don't see it...only time will tell

Waterboy - The only reason Hilliard became servicable was because of the Cobbs injury, then Brown injury. He only ended up with high 20's something in total carries and did not get his first carry until around the 10th game of the season or so. Those number are not exact, but they are very close...

Good point bobby..... we have no idea how he may be used but to call these guys bust just because they didnt win starting jobs their first year or didnt contribute in limited playing time is just stupid and im sooo sick of hearing it. Just like all the stupid trade talk. Just to clear it up.... Ginn will not be traded please no one else say it.............

Casey Hampton, NT, Pit & Darren Sharper.
All the rest can go f u c k themselves.

Indiana,
Thats why you have PS players and guys riding the pine for 2 years. So when given the chance they can plug holes for when starters go down

WestVaFins - My point exactly is what you said. He will not be our QB in the future with henne on the team, so that is why I say with a 2nd round pick he is a bust. He needs to put on about 20 punds of muscle as well, because currently he is way to small to play QB in this league.

How is he even going to get snaps at QB on the bench??

My guess is that he will never get to play quarterback in the NFL... But hey if he puts the pounds on then yeah we can find a place for him. Too much speed in that kid to let him slip through the cracks. And i also agree that to pick him in the second round was a major disaster. But the pick itself not a disaster just placement of the pick....

Agreed WestVAFins... I cannot wrap my mind around why people cannot understand the idea behind "Developmental players"... player who come out of the draft and bust into stardom are so few and far between its funny. Manning SUCKED his first 2 season, started "Getting It" in year 3... think he is a BUST TOO? Most fans don't realize this, they see players who are on other teams as all of the sudden "Great"... they don't know that team drafted that player 3 years before and he has been busting butt on the 2nd team or practice squad for 2 years just to be good enough to get a few starts. It typical "Youth and Inpatients" People think good players only grow on some tree that is only in other teams lockers rooms.... they don't understand good football players are not always drafted... they are built by NFL coaches into positional players the team needs. Try as you might... they will not get it until they grow into less inpatients and more understanding. We have drafted a few guys on Defense that are gonna be very solid Line guys. Look beyond the Miami no nothing media and read what some of the National press has to say about guys like Merling and Langford... most have Miami's D-line as being one of the best in a few seasons.. but that means NOTHING... Right?

If we cant get Vince Wilfork, i would say then Dansby and Ryan Clark would fill in some great need.

This would change our focus on the draft just a little bit.

Alright enough of the Wilfork thing its not goign to happen......

and for the rest dont waste your time, no julius peppers either... Can we concentrate on people that we actualyl have a shot at getting?????????

Ryan Clark wasn't the one who knocked out Pat White, it was Ike Taylor the CB.

Definitely Dansby. Wilfork is unealistic but I think Casey Hampton is realistic.

Keep in mind Mike Nolan coached the Niners for awhile so he is very familiar w/ some of their guys.

ddave

More likely we can get WILFORD than WILFORK

Oh noo, Jamal Lewis was just released. He we go with the "bring Jamal Lewis, trade Ronnie Brown for a draft pick" idea

It is funny to see fans get their hopes up going into free agency with unrealistic expectations and then complain when the management does not match them. When you look at this list most of us think, "wow, that is pretty void of star talent". Well, here is a news flash for all you folks living in a bubble. THERE ARE 31 OTHER TEAMS AND FAN BASES THINKING THE SAME THING. IF we are lucky we will land one impact free agent. I would love to see it be Dansby but I think his contact demands are going to be ridiculous. You think Bart Scott last year was overpaid, wait to you see what Dansby gets. As far as Peppers, his contract is going to make Haynesworth's contract look like minimum wage. This regime will continue to build through the draft. Two years ago we went heavy on the lines. Last year we went heavy on WR and Secondary. You have to think Linebackers and maybe RB or TE will be the focus. After that, you have a good, young, big base at every position and you can focus on tweaking the roster rather than overhauling. I still think people forget where we were two years ago with a 1-15 record. How many times did you hear an anaylst or announcer point out how little talent the team had or how few draft picks are still on the roster or making an impact. You can't say that anymore. Peace!

Another reason players are deemed busts is where they are drafted, example Ted Ginn and Pat White. Ted Ginn has been labeled a bust ebcause he was a high draft pick, but just because he has not became a true #1 great recevier yet does not mean he is a bust. He got drafted into a bad team (at the time) in a bad year for the Phins. I do not think Ginn is a bust. I want to see him next to a true #1 recevier and see how good he is. Also, Pat White cannot be judged on just a few plays (maybe 20 all year) when he is a rookie. I just don't feel he will play a vital role ever on this team end for when he was drafted it was bad. We could of got him a few rounds later and if we did no one would be complaining about him like they are...

Didnt we hear the other day that casey hampton would be franchised as well as wilfork??????????????????????????????????????

Derek in WPB, quite simply because this is the age of "instant gratification" that's why, Saban, Cameron and the past 10 years has been such a Dolphin disaster..we forgo draft picks and player development for quick fixes...ur 100% right when it comes to guys like Merling, Lankford, Clemons, Patrick Turner etc....These are the players that will come out of "nowhere" and be the next big stars...anyone who wants "instant gratification" needs to go jerk off and let the knowledgeable football people such as Parcells build a real football team

From Rotoworld:

SAY NO TO JT

Free agent Jason Taylor will be sidelined "three months or so" after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder this week.
Taylor turns 36 before the start of the season, so any surgery is a concern at this point in his career. His recovery timetable puts his return at mid-May, which could cause a delay in choosing a team this offseason.

waterboy you flip flop more than John Kerry come on man!!!!!!!!!

Hey NJ... Saw your argument last night with Rob about Weatherspoon vs. McClain...

1. You said Weatherspoon has a hard time getting off blocks... To be honest do we know if this is a technical flaw or willingness flaw? This didn't seem much of an issue during Senior Bowl week so maybe being under the pro coaches for a week helped...

McClain on the other hand rarely had to engage any blockers... His D-line always kept him clean. So do we really know how well he would play in the middle of an inferior team such as Missouri?

2. You said McClain made more plays... McClain...

Weatherpoon : 67 solo tackles, 14.5 TFL, 4.5 sacks, 1 int

McClain: 53 solo tackles, 14 TFL, 4 sacks, 2 int

So McClain had 14 less tackles and he played in one more game than Weatherspoon did....

3. Size - 6-4 258 , 6-2 245... McClain is a beast but Weatherspoon is the prototype size for the ILB in the 3-4.

4. Leadership and intangibles - I think both have them and their were definitely on display by Weatherspoon throughout the Senior Bowl week and during the game...
