Well, salary cap or no, there will be some sort of free agency starting on March 5. On Wednesday the NFL released the list of veterans with at least six credited seasons and an expiring contract that would constitute the sadly diminished class of 2010 unrestricted free agents should there be no new collective bargaining agreement and thus no salary cap.
Check out the list. There are 236 players on it along with the agents that represent them.
There are a couple of interesting names -- Karlos Dansby, Julius Peppers, Chad Pennington. And some of these guys will contribute to teams in 2010, no doubt about that.
So you tell me which ones you would target for the Dolphins.
One more thing: I included the names of the agents that represent these guys so note Jason Ferguson's agent. Jimmy Sexton represents the soon-to-be free agent nose tackle. Sexton also represents Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano.
Translation: If Ferguson is going to play in 2010, the Dolphins will get first dibs on him. No doubt about that.

NJ, Everyone was shouting Rolando McClain because that is who everybody knew from day 1... He played for the National Champion. Nobody knew any of the prospects until the Senior Bowl. And you telling me that the Senior Bowl means nothing, yet Bill Parcells came out of hibernation last year to physcially be present the whole week. So you know more than Parcells now?

I'll be Corey Chavous. I don't even get to talk to the scouts and coaches and I know more than Bucky Brooks.

Salad Tosser (NJ),
Dear Miami Herald: Is there a way to block F'ing morons comments from being posted on your blog.If not, please create one because there is a 12-year old from NJ on here who posts horrible analysis and comments, in between giving his fat daddy rim jobs for breakfast.. Also, 6'1 245 is not small for an ILB, NFL or Pro..
Posted by: Jeffro13 | February 18, 2010 at 12:02 PM
All that still does not mean he CANT play ILB. What is hard about that you guys. I never said spoon before McClain, but what I am saying the guy is capable, and more importantly, coachable. Anyone who doesn't think he can play is not giving the guy credit. Spoon is a player, yes better as weakside, but would be good as an ILB. No matter where he goes, I bet he is a very good player.
Posted by: Bootang25 | February 18, 2010 at 12:03 PM
Read all the comments about Dansby. Yeah, we need to get this guy. This is a win-win choice. +Immediate impact player, no learning curve +More latitude in the draft, +Much needed leadership +No danger of a bust.
Can't think of a single reason why we shouldn't try to get him.
Posted by: cocoajoe | February 18, 2010 at 12:03 PM
The Seer,
I agree totally. Solai is at best, an acceptable back up for a drive. I think the Fins see that as well. And sadly, I don't expect Fergy back. He'll probably try though. He does enjoy the game.

Salad Tosser (NJ).
And since when does the Senior Bowl not mean anything? Mike Nolan said that his best drafts throughout his entire career came when he was a part of the coaching staff at the senior bowl..Once again you post an irresponsible, groundless, reckless comment and act like it's fact..
Posted by: Jeffro13 | February 18, 2010 at 12:06 PM
Easy Jeffro13...The last thing you wanna do is get into an argument with NJ. I found that out the hard way. LOL.!!
Posted by: Mark | February 18, 2010 at 12:07 PM
cocoajoe,
I agree, and going back to my earlier comment about the Dolphins dragging their feet in free agency, this is what I was referring to. Get the guy in for the contract talk and SIGN HIM. They can't afford another day waffling.
Posted by: perspective | February 18, 2010 at 12:10 PM
Go get 'em Jeffro.
A grateful fandom wishes you well. We are too scared to criticize Mr. Wonderful ourselves.
Posted by: Senor Winces | February 18, 2010 at 12:11 PM
Butkus Award winner, Rolando McClain runner up Sean Weatherspoon...I could go on and on but fact is I don't want the second best linebacker in football, I want the BEST...and that's McClain PERIOD
Posted by: bobbyd12 | February 18, 2010 at 12:15 PM
Yeah, that Parcells... Who went to the East West Shrine game the week before and didn't make trips back to back weeks... I guess you can't fall in love with players at the East West Shrine game, the Scouting Combine or during individual workouts at your facility or theirs or when you are taking them out on the town for dinner... C'mon man!
Posted by: Marcus | February 18, 2010 at 12:15 PM
question, which is likely to happen first, Marshall being arrested for woman beating, or him scoring his next touchdown?
Posted by: perspective | February 18, 2010 at 12:15 PM
NJ, has been reported many times Parcells told people in November he was really high on White. Wasn't like he didn't know who the kid was then fell in love at the Senior Bowl. Only reaffirmed how he already felt. I know you understand these all star games are another part of the evaluation process, and have importance.
Posted by: Bootang25 | February 18, 2010 at 12:16 PM
Well, you never know... It would be nice if he did, but you're probably right, he wont be in Miami. But if we can get Boldin with a 3rd rounder, I say we gotta pull the trigger. That would save us from having to spend a high pick on someone who may or may not develope into a #1 wr.. Also, all this talk about how we need a #1 WR, and I hear nothing about how great it could be to have a beast TE, Gresham or someone in that mold. Yes, we definatly need a wr to stretch the field on the outside, but if we had a stud TE who could work the middle of the field, then our entire offense would open up.. Even the running game would benefit because teams coulnt sneak they're safeties up to help in run support as much. Thoughts? If Gresham isnt the one, then who else might be available? I dont think the kid from UM is the answer, nor is Hernandez from FLA
Posted by: Jeffro13 | February 18, 2010 at 12:16 PM
Bobbyd, what if McClain is gone. He could be a legit option with CLE at 7, even BUF at 9, DEN at 10.They are all 3-4 teams who also probably want the #1 ILB in the draft.
Posted by: Bootang25 | February 18, 2010 at 12:18 PM
Jeffro13, ur about to get hammered little boy, just talking about drafting Dez Bryant makes u look like a Madden GM with zero knowledge about Parcells and the fins...like Mark said, u gonna lose this AND look foolish
Posted by: bobbyd12 | February 18, 2010 at 12:19 PM
C'mon Bobby. Two linebackers play the same position, the both get similar stats, the both get nomiated and win many awards... One did it for the National Champion team who could have won without McClain (Who had 2 tackles the whole game!) because all I saw was Mark Ingram winning them games... And one did it for a mediocre team with little help... I'm not buying the hype...
Posted by: Marcus | February 18, 2010 at 12:20 PM
And factor in anyone else who may target McClain, it would be obvious if he wasn't picked by 11, a team coveting him would try to trade up to JAX spot because it is very likely MIA takes him at 12. So a lot still has to happen for him to be there at 12.

Yeah i hear ya Jeffro but the more i think about giving up a 3rd rounder, the more i dont like it. Dont get me wrong,i like Boldin but the thought of giving up a 3rd makes me uneasy. I think a better option would be getting Antonio Bryant. I know it probably would'nt happen because Parcells and Bryant have alittle bit of history but at least we would keep our 3rd
Posted by: Mark | February 18, 2010 at 12:22 PM
Bootang, I've made it clear many times here, Dan Williams would be my pick at 12, we need to fix NT this year with the depth available, except Cody no go with him
Posted by: bobbyd12 | February 18, 2010 at 12:23 PM
Well bobbyd, I have also said my pick is D Williams. I just think it is tough to see McClain there at 12.
Posted by: Bootang25 | February 18, 2010 at 12:26 PM
BobbyD12,
Kiper: Dolphins will debate McClain and Bryant..
So while the Trifecta's history shows that they will most likely go LB at #12, it's a new era,and the Trio realize it. They will definately "talk" about drafting him.. So I guess Kiper is a Madden GM also, for even suggesting that they will "Talk" about drafting Bryant.. And why are you all over NJ's nutz? I'm just tired of hearing him belittle everything every other dolphin fan says, like he's on a pedistal and no other Dolphin fan could possibly know anything.
Posted by: Jeffro13 | February 18, 2010 at 12:28 PM
Ok. So what are you talking about Parcells fell in love with Pat White at the Senior Bowl? And thats why he didn't go this year? Now thats assinine! I know they take in everything as a whole when making a decision. NJ, you know I would tell you if a guy looks good... Big or small... I hyped up Darius Butler last year, you disagreed that he wasn't a fit for Miami, Patriots picked him in the 2nd and he had a solid year... I also was a big fan of Maluagua and Nicks... Both were great this past year... I'm telling you... I do not see what everybody sees when I see McClain. I an incredible physical specimen, wrapped in Crimson, awards and standing next to Nick Saban. Its a mirage. I am going to go back and look for a third time to see if I can see something... He is solid but to me he should have been way better than he was.
Posted by: Marcus | February 18, 2010 at 12:28 PM
There are 8 legit DT prospects early on in the draft, some not real good NT prospects. Also the depth of the OLB/DE hybrid type is quite large. And 4 or 5 legit S options. But not many ILB options, that I'd what worries me a little.
Posted by: Bootang25 | February 18, 2010 at 12:28 PM
Marcus, you don't have to buy it but I don't see any NFL scout or article stating Weatherspoon is above McClain in any way, shape or form...I don't think one person who follows the draft or in the NFL would agree Weatherspoon is better..take Weatherspoon before McClain and ur taking the SECOND best linebacker in the draft, and God forbid it don't work out, u will always be the GM that let McClain go...
Posted by: bobbyd12 | February 18, 2010 at 12:29 PM
To Derek in WPB
How many on that list made the pro bowl. One? How many broke into starting roles because of injury or the current starter simply sucked?
Nah brother...your list is suspect at best.
Posted by: Los Lobos | February 18, 2010 at 12:32 PM
Bootang, earlier post, I don't even believe FS is a question...Clemons is gonna replace Gibril ready or not...that position won't be addressed in FA or early in the draft
Posted by: bobbyd12 | February 18, 2010 at 12:32 PM
I'll be the 1st to admit that i know very little about draft prospects (unlike b12 and NJ) but if the Dolphins picked McClain,i'm gonna be pulling cartwheels. The guy does look awesome
Posted by: Mark | February 18, 2010 at 12:32 PM
I didn't say Weatherspoon before McClain. I just compared the two. McClain is the 1st linebacker. But I would take someone else at 12. Weatherspoon is someone who will get chosen 25 or lower were normally MLB's go in the draft.
Posted by: Marcus | February 18, 2010 at 12:33 PM
Well NJ, I missed out on that story. And I read all three sites faithfully so I don't know how I missed that one. But wouldn't make much sense for him to go to the East West Shrine practices if he was trying to prevent himself from falling in love with a prospect. It is the same environment.
Posted by: Marcus | February 18, 2010 at 12:35 PM
I don't believe nothing Nick Saban says.
Posted by: Marcus | February 18, 2010 at 12:36 PM
Why is noone talking about Kindle?? That guy is a beast, and if we could pull Dansby, then we could look at OLB/Pass rusher, and Kindle is a monster, and theyre are reports that Parcells took a trip earlier in the season to TX to meet with Kindle, and that he's a big fan. I truely believe that if we could get Dansby, then that would open up SO many more options with the #12 pick, rather then having to use the pick on a position we could possibly fill in Free Agency
Posted by: Jeffro13 | February 18, 2010 at 12:37 PM
b12,
You really believe Parcells wont address the Safety position in Free Agency or early in the draft? Wow,i'm surprised bud. Would be good to see Clemons get a chance though cus he looked really good last pre season.
Posted by: Mark | February 18, 2010 at 12:37 PM
For all there I read in this blog and viewing in youtube Weatherspoon and McClain are tie. Weatherspoon is more player McClain is more athlete. Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano seems to prefer athletes, Mike Nolan seems prefer players. Denver has the same defensive problems than us and pick ahead us, but without Nolan maybe they don't pick a defensive player, so in my opinion we will have Williams, Weatherspoon and McClain for the first round, and in the second we don´t have no one of the tree. For me I prefer players over athletes. and "must haves" over "the best player available". I will prefer 1)Williams 2)Weatherspoon 3)McClain. The interest in Williams showed during the senior bowl may was a "screen smoke" so I think the trifecta will choose 1)McClain 2)Williams 3)Weatherspoon

Lets get back mcmichael chambers turk hadnot culpepper. Oh yeah baby lol!.... Kidding.
Posted by: THUNDERBOLT | February 18, 2010 at 12:38 PM
Jeffro, Jeff Ireland says "Dez Bryant" Parcells say "no" that's the Dez Bryant discussion...Parcells has NEVER picked a receiver with a first pick, has picked 6 linebackers...Bryant was injured last year, is a diva and his agent is an as"hole...
Posted by: bobbyd12 | February 18, 2010 at 12:38 PM
Bobbyd, I think you have a good point. I like Clemons, I think he will benefit from another year of coaching. His speed and athleticism are something you either have or you don't. Depending on how the draft shakes out, I could see us legitimately taking Chad Jones or Nate Allen if there when we pick in the third round. Would be good value picks.

According to reports, the Dolphins have re-signed offensive tackle SirVincent Rogers for the 2010 season. Rogers originally signed with the Dolphins last April as an undrafted free agent from the University of Houston.
The 6-4, 315 pound Rogers struggled during camps last summer and decided to leave the team and opt for retirement from football. However, Rogers apparently has had a change of heart regarding the sport and will give the NFL another chance.
this is from another blog

Ya, I agree that it is likely that he will take a LB also, but a talent like Bryant would be tough for any team with a glaring need at WR to pass up. He's exactly the type of wr we need. That being said, Maybe the trifecta likes some of the other wr's who might be available later(Benn, Gyliard,G.Tate)..Either way, Parcells realizes that he needs a WR immediately, and he's most likely going to have to give up a draft pick to get it, weather its a 3rd for Boldin, or taking one in the fist 2 or 3 rounds.

To Dolphin Disciple
Let's look at who we actually beat on our division winning season in 2008.
Beat NE ONCE!
Beat JETS ONCE!
Beat SD.
Beat BUF TWICE! <----- which we expect right?
Rest of the losers included Den, Sea, Oak, STL, SF, KC. Each win was by a TD or less with these losers.
So we arguably beat two good teams in 2008. NE and SD. Yet, NE beat us also that season. Possibly Den was a good team but that was a Jay Cutler led Den team. SD was the only team we beat that made the playoffs that season.
So Sparano did in fact take a team to the playoffs but it wasn't a good team. That's why we got blew out by Balt.

What up fellers?
I'll be posting the entire list of RFAs after lunchtime.
If you thought this list was long, you'll be stunned by that one.
Meanwhile, everybody OK today?

As I've said before, I don't think McClain will be available at #12. Even if he is, we still need to see what the Phins will do in free agency. If they sign Dansby, then they don't need to pick McClain.
In my opinion, I think their #1 need is OLB. Porter is gone and JT may be as well. Lets face it, the NFL has turned into a passing league and stopping the pass has become more important than stopping the run. That's why I put OLB ahead of NT and ILB. No matter how good your cover guys are, if an NFL QB has all day to throw, he's going to pick you apart. The key to stopping a passing team is to put pressure on the QB. The Giants proved that when they won the SB against NE. I would hope they sign Dansby because he's a stud and he won't cost us any draft picks. And then use their first pick on the best available OLB,NT or FS available.
As I said yesterday, if we had a high caliber defense last year things would be real different right now. Go back to all of our games and reduce our opponent's scores that were over 16 to 16. Our record would be 12-4 not 7-9. Big difference. How good does our current offense look now?
I think people are focusing on offense this year because of so many games where the offense didn't do enough to win games. Except the reason the offense had to do so much was because our defense sucked. I'm not saying to forget upgrading the offense entirely, I'm
saying focus on building a great defense first.
Mando, what's your take on my comments???

I don't know why you wouldn't believe anything Satan says Marcus. It's not like he's a proven liar or anything.
I gotta tell you guys, between Rob in OC, Marcus and the other anti-McClain people along with the videos of McClain Rob has been talking about, I am starting to worry about McClain being the pick. I do agree the videos I have seen which you would think would be his best stuff were not all that impressive.

Hey, joeyonetime, I appreciate you being here but if you're going to attribute reports, let's get it right.
The nugget about SirVincent Rogers coming back to the Dolphins was first reported here, on this blog, by me, two or three days ago.
You need to come here more often, buddy. Or follow me on twitter or something because I give you news updates there as well.

Mark, Bootang, I just don't see us spending big money in FA for a FS after the Gibril disaster...and FS in the draft is weak....I really believe we stick Clemons out there and take the chance while strengthing our core Defense
Posted by: bobbyd12 | February 18, 2010 at 12:53 PM
Mando, having a good debate today regarding draft options. Do you respond to your emails you get? I have a great suggestion for you, one that would be i think you would like. It would maybe lead to a great live chat or blog.
Posted by: Bootang25 | February 18, 2010 at 12:53 PM
Jeffro13 - I have agreed with some things you have said, but we all know we need a #1 WR. No matter if Dez Bryant is available Miami is not going offense with 1st round. It is not our biggest need. Also, Bryant has same agent as Crabtere, so if he falls and thinks he is worth more then the 12th pick money he probably will holdout like Crabtree. Do you think that will help us?
Posted by: Indiana Dolfan | February 18, 2010 at 12:54 PM
Armando,
What do you know about the rumor on ESPN that the fins are after Miles Austin on the cowboys?? My staff failed to let me know about this one.
Posted by: Tony Sparano | February 18, 2010 at 12:54 PM
I don't know guys... Here is my report on McClain....
Positives: Excellent in coverage... He knows his coverages and his responsibility... Uses his long arms and instincts to break up passes and close passing lanes... Nothing usually gets beyond him in run support...Can see his intelligence on the field, making adjustments and being around the football...
Negatives: Seems to not want to gamble on any play which makes him smart in a sense because you can get burnt when you gamble but it also makes him late to the football. He lets the play develop before he goes downhill to the football, runner is beyond line of scrimmage before he makes a decision on what to do... For as big as he is he does not use his size to punish ball carriers.... He can be blocked... Do not see any elite physical abilities other than his size...
Posted by: Marcus | February 18, 2010 at 12:54 PM
Bobbyd, I agree, no big money, but I wouldn't mind a value pick starting in the 3rd round to upgrade the S position. I think Clemons could very well be the guy, but depth at the S position, as well as competition are never bad things.
Posted by: Bootang25 | February 18, 2010 at 12:55 PM
Armando - You has this to say in your article: "So you tell me which ones you would target for the Dolphins."
Now that you are here I want to ask you who you think Miami will target (or should target) out of the FA's?
Posted by: Indiana Dolfan | February 18, 2010 at 12:57 PM
Jeffro13,
Let me ask you something. What good is it having not one, but even two pro bowl receivers sitting on the bench because our defense can't get off the field? The Phins need to focus on defense. There's no point in upgrading the offense if it can't get on the field because our defense can't stop anybody.
Posted by: Datajack | February 18, 2010 at 12:57 PM
Also, any word on how much the top (Dansby, Peppers, Wilfork, etc.) will even want from their new team. That will matter on the thoughts on who we should or should not go after...
Posted by: Indiana Dolfan | February 18, 2010 at 12:58 PM
Sir Vincent is a cool name.
Posted by: THUNDERBOLT | February 18, 2010 at 12:59 PM
Datajack - Exactly my point I stated above...
We need to take becoming elite 1-2 steps at a time. it will not happen overnight like some people think on here.
Posted by: Indiana Dolfan | February 18, 2010 at 12:59 PM
Indiana,
Well the first question is who is likely to get tagged. I think Wilfork will be one to get tagged. We need to build a list of "true" free agents and then go from there. Mando we need your help here. Of the top free agents out there, who's realistically going to be in the open market?
Posted by: Datajack | February 18, 2010 at 01:00 PM
Armando, take out ur opinion and honestly, do you see anything on this FA board that Parcells is going to go for??? Cause honestly, I don't see it
Posted by: bobbyd12 | February 18, 2010 at 01:00 PM
Anyone dismissing 'Spoon is making a grave error. he did not come from nowhere. pre-season he was rated as the top linebacker but because mizzou had an awful year, his stock slipped. I'm quite comfortable in saying that he will be as good as McClain. Until I see McClain work in space during the combine, I will not make him my clearcut #1 ILB. Just because NJ says so is not reason enough for me. And we could be looking at a board where both McClain and Dan Williams are both gone. Then what?
