Well, salary cap or no, there will be some sort of free agency starting on March 5. On Wednesday the NFL released the list of veterans with at least six credited seasons and an expiring contract that would constitute the sadly diminished class of 2010 unrestricted free agents should there be no new collective bargaining agreement and thus no salary cap.
Check out the list. There are 236 players on it along with the agents that represent them.
There are a couple of interesting names -- Karlos Dansby, Julius Peppers, Chad Pennington. And some of these guys will contribute to teams in 2010, no doubt about that.
So you tell me which ones you would target for the Dolphins.
One more thing: I included the names of the agents that represent these guys so note Jason Ferguson's agent. Jimmy Sexton represents the soon-to-be free agent nose tackle. Sexton also represents Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano.
Translation: If Ferguson is going to play in 2010, the Dolphins will get first dibs on him. No doubt about that.

Indiana,
Thats a great point. Its often overlooked by fans/media that who the players have as agents often are BIG factors into who teams draft.(which is one reason it went so smoothly drafting J.Long). That being said, maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, because if we start the season without a wr who can contribute IMMEDIATELY, I'm going to be highly dissapointed. Also, isnt it kind of nice that we have a front office that we are so confident in that we are almost sure that we are going to hit on our #12 pick no matter who they take! Big difference from other GM's/coaches we've had in recent memory..We are almost assured to have a new impact player on our roster this next season, and thats awesome.

Datajack. don't bother with jeffro13. He knows nothing about football and he's a jackazzzzzz to boot.
Posted by: Chalupa | February 18, 2010 at 01:03 PM
Tony, I believe your staff failed to inform you about Austin because IT AIN'T HAPPENING!
Gang, we've been discussing for weeks how the Dolphins might not invest a first-round pick on a WR. While that may or may not happen, I know the Dolphins DEFINITELY would not want to invest a first- and a third-round pick on one WR.
And that is what it will cost to pry #19 from Dallas.
More likely, I believe the Dolphins will be looking for the next Miles Austin -- a guy Parcells found as an undrafted rookie -- and develop him.

If I look at a ten minute cutup of a player and who only makes two good plays, he's not the pick at 12 overall... That's what happened with McClain... Then I watched Brandon Graham for 10 seconds and said wow ten times... Something aint right...

Bobby, I try to answer most of my emails as time permits.
Posted by: Armando Salguero | February 18, 2010 at 01:06 PM
Fine as wine, Mando. Most comments I've read agree about going after Dansby. Gaze into your crystal ball and tell us what Parcells is going to do.
Posted by: cocoajoe | February 18, 2010 at 01:06 PM
Anyone want to defend his two tackle performance in the Championship game? Or you want to tell me about how he doesn't want to come off the field in practice?
Posted by: Marcus | February 18, 2010 at 01:06 PM
Mark in Toronto,
I think OLB is the #1 need position for the phins. I like Weatherspoon, but I think there will be better OLBs available at 12. Jason Pierre-Paul and Derrick Morgan are two I can think off the bat. Spoon is projected as a low 1st rounder, but if he drops to the phins at #2 I'd take him in a heart beat.
Posted by: Datajack | February 18, 2010 at 01:09 PM
Oh yeah, and he cannot blitz... He runs into the line and gets stuck,
Posted by: Marcus | February 18, 2010 at 01:10 PM
If Dansby wants 10 million, I'd give it to him. Crowder gets 7 million. They wasted 14 million on Wilford and Wilson.
Posted by: perspective | February 18, 2010 at 01:11 PM
Jeffro13 - Also, even if we went WR with the first pick why is everyone only talking about Bryant? He is not the only WR in the draft. I just think Bryant is risky with all the non football related things. I know some of the WR on not rated high enough to go #12, but if we did go WR and we would be guaranteed to get a STUD WR with the #12 pick would you guys object to that pick??
Posted by: Indiana Dolfan | February 18, 2010 at 01:12 PM
Mark in Toronto, in ur opinion is the key words...like I said before, not ONE NFL scout or article or mock draft has Weatherspoon over McClain...if McClain is there and we take Weatherspoon, we are taking the SECOND best linebacker in the draft..and if Weatherspoon is a bust or gets injured then we will always be the team that took the SECOND best guy....and that is not MY opinion, that is the opinion of the NFL pros
Posted by: bobbyd12 | February 18, 2010 at 01:13 PM
perspective,
I'm with you there. If he wants 10mil, give it to him. He's a sure thing and it won't cost us any draft picks.
Posted by: Datajack | February 18, 2010 at 01:14 PM
Datajack - You asked about lets talk about who may or may not get tagged...?? We don't know, so we should talk about everyone that is currently not tagged. Then, when a particular player gets tagged we have no further converstation. It is funny to hear people argue about he will get tagged or he will not get tagged. No one has a clue and it is all guessing and speculating or just "your opinion" which everyone is entitled to their opinion. It is America: Freedom of Speech!
Posted by: Indiana Dolfan | February 18, 2010 at 01:15 PM
Armando, I didn't ask u about e-mails??? Think u got wrong guy lol
Posted by: bobbyd12 | February 18, 2010 at 01:16 PM
Actually bobbyd12, Weatherspoon is not the second best LB in the draft. There's a nice list of OLB,DE (projected as OLBs) ahead of him. There's no way in hell you take Spoon over McClain if McClain is there. However I don't think he will be. Now as I said before, if Spoon (who's projected as a low 1st rd pick) drops to us at 2, then grab him (unlikely as well).
Posted by: Datajack | February 18, 2010 at 01:17 PM
bobbyd12 - I agree, but quite a few mock drafts have us taking Kindle and not much conversation gets brought up about him. So, if Kindle, McClain and Weatherspoon is available at #12, who do we take? Can (or could) we lose on either guy we take out of those 3...probably not if the guru's (the one's that get paid to be and no one on here) are correct on their predictions
Posted by: Indiana Dolfan | February 18, 2010 at 01:17 PM
The list of restricted free agents is up now on this blog. Feel free to go there to carry on the discussion.
Thanks.
Posted by: Armando Salguero | February 18, 2010 at 01:17 PM
I believe your figures are correct perspective. If Wilson was worth 8 million then 10 million for Dansby is a bargain.
Posted by: cocoajoe | February 18, 2010 at 01:20 PM
Datajack and perspective - As I agree with you, many have complained that Dansby is not worth the money. Well how much money is to much money. Did everyone think that Wilson got to much money last year? Dansby is proven guy and I believe with his exerience will be better than any rookie we get (or at least the rookies first year).
Vote YES to Dansby if we can get him. Would having Dansby and drafting someone like McClain be a bad thing. Look how many LB's, pass rushers, run stoppers the Giants had when the beat the Pats in the Superbowl...it was quite a few. Fresh bodies and pressure at all times could be a good thing.

Indiana no other receiver is talked about at 12 because they all suck except Bryant.

Indiana, we take the BEST rated linebacker out there, and if he is there it is Rolando McClain

Indiana,
I feel you bud, but I just hate to discuss a player that in the end will prob not be there. Some are more likely than others. For example, its been reported that Arizona will not tag Dansby, so he's realistic.
Would I love to see Wilfork? Hell yeah. But he's too good and too young for NE to just let him walk. They will tag him for sure.
I mean I'll discuss anyone you want, but personally I just hate to get my hopes up.

I vote YES to Dansby. I mean it's just money. How much more valuable is a high draft pick? And those picks are crap shoots. Dansby is a sure thing. This year's #1 pick will prob make Dansby money, without playing a down. If he doesn't work out, you lose the money AND the pick.

Regarding the "tag" issue. There are quite a few players on that list. How many can a team tag? One? I think there will be good talent after tags are placed. And, this is similar to the draft, in the speculation sense. No one really knows whether Wilfork or Watson will be tagged by New England. Most of us think it's Wilfork, yet they drafted a nose tackle in the second round last year. So, who really knows what Bellicek is thinking.

Bobby, mock drafts are wrong all the time. I don't take the exact order as Bible. I like to look at the top 2 or 3 and then pcik from there. The difference between one and 2 is so razor thin that it comes down to meer opinion vs empirical proof. Remember a lot of people ranked Leaf over Manning, Edge over Ricky, etc.

They get 2 tags this year.

Mark in Toronto, I'm not just talking mock draft, I'm talking NFL scouts, reports the whole deal, u won't come up with one NFL expert who says Weatherspoon is better then McClain, but u will find people who say Weatherspoon isn't the SECOND best LB in the draft

Perspective, Crowder is not going anywhere

Ben Watson from the pats would be a good get IMO. Seems like the type of player this regime would covet.

I live in AZ, but am a Phin fan, and this is the word on Dansby out here.. He is very solid at stopping the run. Very, very good in coverage. Maybe one of the best (which is huge for Mia, considering how every TE in the league looked like a HOF'er against us). Good leader, good teamate. BUT, he is a below average pass rusher, and is not a "big play" kind of guy. He dissapears. He came up with huge plays however in the Playoff game v.s. GB,so thats fresh on everyones minds, but he's not a #1LB, and he's not someone you build a Defense around. Too much money? who knows, but it would be nice to see him in Aqua.

NJ PHIN, @ 12:19
The GMs, Scouts and Coaches don't "Go back" to see any game clips, films, videos or anything? Why would they? Just like you said NJ PHIN "It's the SAME thing they already saw."
No need, just like you, right?

Living in Charlottd and watching Peppers only show up for about half the plays he's involved in, I can assure you that the Fins do not want him. I feel for the team that wastes the cash on him.

Marcus @12:54,
Seems pretty accurate to me. I see what that post describes when I watch him play.
I wonder why others just simply keep defending him instead of pointing to live game action to show us differently?
McClain will be average and yes maybe even kinda buster"ish" when where he goes in the draft is factored in. I.E. Ginn would get a lot less static if he was drafted 4th round vs 9th overall like he was.
Also, in calling out McClain those saying they see visual evidence are watching game footage. Obviously it's McClain's play that looks to be "less than man among boys" type play which is what you would like @12.
Cheers,

I know I am not gonna change a died in the wool, McClain is the best, hands down, no two ways about it type of person.
I just want people that are open minded and not dead set on their final call of talent to take a look at ACTUAL FOOTAGE that they can isolate in on him and then judge for themselves.

If you watch em and see domination I hope McClain is your favorite choice, no problem.
Bootang25 did and he saw "some" of what was being said negatively about McClain. I respect him for watching them. He is not diving off the McClain bandwagon but, I think he's not gonna run around saying "your crazy" if they are not in love with him as a sure fire Pro Bowl player or the next Pat Willis.

Alge Crumple proved he could block in Tennesse could help bolster the TE spot for the Fins.
Posted by: MojoMark | February 18, 2010 at 09:40 PM
why do people continue to say smiley and grove were great free agent signings they are mediocre at best and it showed when the fins were not using the wildcat the line is a 100 billion dollar joke and if they want to ever win they better fix it
