Are the Dolphins close to Saints, Colts? No!

In the aftermath of Super Bowl XLIV, I cannot tell you how many times I've heard this phrase: The Dolphins aren't that far off from winning a Super Bowl. They played both New Orleans and Indianapolis well and should have beaten them. So they're close.

The logic apparently follows that since the Dolphins lost to Indianapolis 27-23 the second week of the season, then lost to New Orleans 46-34 on Oct. 25th, Miami is close to being pretty good because those two teams are obviously championship caliber.

And it's not just fans seeing the Dolphins through this prism.

"I think we're close," Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown said on his Ronnie Brown radio show on 560-WQAM this week. "I think we have a lot of the right pieces to the puzzle. I think we still have a few things we need to tweak and get better at. But as a team, we're pretty close.

"We played both those teams this year and, to our credit, we were in the games and had an opportunity to win both of those games. So that says, as a team, we're close. But there are a few pieces to the puzzle we've got left."

Now, you're not going to like this so if you're not in the mood for an honest dose of reality, simply stop reading now. That way you'll go on about the rest of your day thinking your team is close to being Super Bowl-caliber because it hung tough with the two Super Bowl teams.

The rest of you, read on.

The Dolphins are nowhere near close to the Saints or the Colts.

Some facts:

NFL teams are judged by what they do through an entire season, not by what they do in one game. And during the 2009 regular season, the Colts were 14-2 while the Saints were 13-3. The Dolphins were 7-9. So Indy won twice as many games as Miami while the Saints almost accomplished the feat.

Both the Saints and Colts won their respective divisions and were No. 1 seeds in the playoffs. The Dolphins finished third in the AFC East and didn't make the playoffs

The Dolphins aren't close.

Any logic that suggests one team is comparable to another based on the outcome of one game must be uniform. So anyone saying the Dolphins are close to the Saints because they almost beat the Saints, must then have to keep a straight face as they say the Washington Redskins are close to being as good as the Saints. The Redskins, after all, lost to New Orleans by a 33-30 score on Dec. 6th. And yes, the Saints played everyone in that game and did everything they could to win.

So do you think the Redskins are close to the Saints?

Taking the argument one step further, if you think the Dolphins are close to the Super Bowl champions based on playing them close in one game, you must also believe the Tampa Bay Bucs are better than the champs. Yes, Tampa Bay beat New Orleans 20-17 on Dec. 27th.

And you cannot argue the Saints gave up in that game because Drew Brees completed 32 of 37 passes for 258 yards with 1 TD. He completed 10 more passes against Tampa than he did against Miami. But the Bucs won.

So do you think Tampa Bay fans are foolish enough to believe they're close to being as good or better than New Orleans?

The Dolphins aren't close.

Finally, of course, there's the empirical argument against the Dolphins: The Saints have better players. And more of them. The Colts have better players. And more of them. That cannot be disputed by any right-thinking NFL fan or player.

Tell me ... what player on the Dolphins offense rises to the level of a Drew Brees or Peyton Manning? Let me answer -- none.

What receiver on the Dolphins could start for the Saints or Colts? Let me answer -- none.

What defender on the Dolphins makes as many game-changing plays as either Indy's Dwight Freeney or Who Dat's Darren Sharper? Let me answer -- none.

The Saints had seven Pro Bowl players in 2009. The Colts had seven Pro Bowl players in 2009. The Dolphins had three -- Yeremiah Bell, Dan Carpenter and Jake Long.

Long didn't play because of injury. Bell got on the team because Indy's Antoine Bethea was in the Super Bowl. And Carpenter played because Nate Kaeding injured himself the first day of practice.

So both Super Bowl teams have more than twice as many Pro Bowl players as Miami, even when we all know the reason the Dolphins had three was due to extenuating circumstances.

The Dolphins aren't close.

And it pains me to hear Dolfans saying they are close to the Saints and Colts because it suggests they're not being realistic. Or just don't know what they're talking about.

Mark, Po have a good night...Alone, curl up with ur boyfriend, turn on Touched by an Angel and take a load on ur face...AS"WIPE

Mark, now ya talkin, NJ is a resource, use it as you will, He is not that bad, he may be an a s s hole, but aren’t we all. I know I am.

Take er easy B12.

By the way Mark,

Love the British, we are the same people, Would go to war for our brothers across the Pond without a thought.

WWII Buff, must be said.

PO , would you go to war for us girls from denmark.

Ok Po,thanks for the heads up. Its getting late so i better hit the sack (yawn). I'll catch ya laters Po. Oh,if NJ comes back, tell him i apologise for earlier will ya fella.?

Cant say as I would, but maybe just for you if ya b under 125 lbs.

What is happening people?

carlito, are you from mexico or panama ?

Just the normal stupidity Carlito. I’m at the forefront.

sometimes I think you just throw stuff at the wall and see if it sticks. This is the new NFL and any year any team but about 4 have a legit chance at winning the Super Bowl, look at the Jets they got hot and lucky and was 30 min from defeating the colts and being in the Super Bowl.....winning the Super Bowl takes soome good luck, getting hot at the right time, and either good talent or good coaching....

Does Jamaica still have a bobsled team?

They still got some god Bud!

Good bud..

Typo Typo Typo.

I hardly ever post, but Armando get real. No I do not think next season Miami will this years Saints. Your like the person who argues that pepto bismol costs over $4 for a tiny bottle when someone complains about high gas prices. And you have the bafoons saying, "Armando's just keeping it real."

Any idiot with half a brain knew this years Saints would be in the SB hunt, but you could say that about the Bears or the Giants when they went? How many other teams do I need to name off.

And then to think, that if the Dolphins are close than so are the Redskins because they played they Saints close is just stupid. Two completely different scenarios. That game was the SB for Was. Every year there are a few garbage teams that play the game of their life against a superior team.

Give me some more sound logic.

Damn it mark !!!. You had to go be nice and all. Listen even before you made all those compliments about me , i was going to come back on here after i came back in and say i was just F'n with you. No need to aplogize. You're alright and i want to continue to talk dolphins football. I was just being my ballbuster self. By the way the tuna thing , remember the tuna and i are both from jersey. LOL !!

Mark , one more thing . are you posting from england or you moved to the states from england ?? If you're posting from england then that's great.

Po , stop giving away secrets about me being nice . I like being hated on here. It' s f'n funny how some of these idiots get all riled up over me for nothing . It's only a blog for crying out loud . It fun. But some of them are pathetic. It's priceless !! :)

Darlington just posted this a mins back...

Instead, Miami must now wait until March 5 to bounce him, a delay that is not believed to have an impact on anything other than his potential trade value. The Dolphins can now further explore trading him (they can't formally do so until March 5), but a market likely won't exist because all teams now know Miami's intentions to release him.

Beyond that, the Dolphins don't have any reason to sweat as a result of Friday's situation. The team doesn't owe Porter his $1 million roster bonus until March 10, so they will have five days after the start of the league year to release the linebacker.

I guess the Fins are in the clear about the 1 million roster bonus. It seems to have flip flopped with each telling...

Cheers,

NJ PHIN ya bawl buster,

Now bust out your player takes with comments as it related to my post from a ways back! Pu-lease!

I am anxious to see what your seeing that is so different about some of the players.

Cheers,

to hell with the porter fiasco im still trying to figure out why that bozo sparano jumps around and fist pumps like a 9 year old after meaningless field goals.

Robin in OC. Your assesment on rolando mclain is so far off base. it's unbelievable that you are watching the same game films as everybody else including some of the best scouts , coaches and Gm in the game. " Has wheels to run downs plays WHEN MOTIVATED. " . When motivated ?? are you kidding me. He eats , drinks and sleeps football. The coaches and scouts rave about his film studies and the way he coaches up the players on the field. His motor never stops . He's all over the field 100% od the times. He looooves football. " They funneled play toward him " . What ?. He plays 3-4 ilb not 4-3 MLB where plays are funneled toward you like Zach thomas. There are 2 ilb's in the 3-4 who reponsibilties include shooting the gaps of the DL and making plays sideline to sideline. Mclain was a monster at that. " Drags ball carriers down and has no explosion and no bend " Are you kidding me ?? Mclain blows up plays and ball carriers on a regular basis. He sniffs out draws and screens like no other LB i've seen in a long Time. These guys FEEL Mcclain when they get hit. This last one is so ridiculous it's unexplainable.> " He jumps on piles after the whistle to make it look like a tackle ". What ???? You better go back and check film on mcclain better that my friend.

Now on to some others. " mays had a pick in the senior bowl which helps vs the lack of int's knock ? did you see that int in the senior bowl ??? My grandma could've made that int. That was a terrible throw by the qb who threw it up for grabs into traffic in the end zone before halftime. LOL. the fact that mays had 1 int last year and a total of 2 the last 3 year has NOT changed that fact. it's good to see you had him late in the 1st round. he might go in the 2nd. Jason pierre-paul " hustles and disrupts plays......... Hustles and will redirect ". The biggest knock on pierre paul besides tht fact he's raw and inexperienced( 1 year of div-1 ). is that he doesn't hustle and takes to many plays off. There you go. cheers

By by the way rob in oc . You would take B. Graham at 12 if it came down to That ??? That is a major reach. graham might be better suited at de in the 4-3 ala dwight freeney than at olb in the 3-4 position he never played for and doesn 't have the hand for either. You will need to fight off alot more people in traffic with your hands as a olb in the 3-4 and that can be a problem for graham.

Profootballtalk.com suggests porter screw up may have been intentional...

League rules require Dolphins to keep Porter until March 5
Posted by Mike Florio on February 12, 2010 6:06 PM ET
The good news is that it didn't take long for linebacker Joey Porter to land back on an NFL roster.

The bad news is that he's back with the Dolphins.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the release of Porter prior to the start of the uncapped year on March 5 would have pushed the Dolphins over the salary cap that still applies to the 2009 league year.

So the Dolphins won't be able to cut him until March 5. And now everyone knows he'll be cut.

Actually, the development could prompt any interested teams to consider trading for the balance of Porter's current contract, in order to secure dibs on his services.

Maybe, then, the Dolphins' error was intentional.

If it wasn't, Dawn Aponte might be looking for another job far sooner than she had ever imagined.

Interesting theory cause Porter's signing bonus is not until March 10th.

The season was a test against good teams. The Dolphins this year didn't cut it. The 11-5 season before that was against not so good teams. A lot of the team weaknesses were exposed. Wildcat is only as good as when teams respect the rest of your offense like the passing game. The passing game doesn't have one #1 or go-to playmaking WR or TE. That can only be called substandard. A defense where my dead grandmother makes surer tackles and giving up too many big plays (especially on 3rd down) is unacceptable. Vontae Davis and Sean Smith will get better after their rookie baptism by fire. The defensive philosophy was too passive and I hope Mike Nolan instills an aggressive mentality and devises means to get the players we need and put them in a position to succeed. And come on, let's force some turnovers for crying out loud.

Drew Brees found Marty Schottenheimer to be too conservative and would have found that same old mentality with Wannstedt or Old Nick. Sean Payton and Brees are a phenomenal fit together as head coach with an aggressive offensive mentality and a QB who thrives in such an environment.

defense still wins championships! The saints have porter's 4th qtr pick to show for that. That is why Miami is so far away from a SB the defense needs the most fixing. I'm skeptical that Nolan can get the job done here seeing as how his defense in Denver flopped at the tail end of the year. Not all his fault I know, but the blame is assigned to him just like Paul Pas was assigned blame for Miami's terrible D this year.

Nolan is an upgrade as DC. We need players. Pascolooney was too passive and predictable on D. Ultimately we were not able to get at the QB or stop the run up the gut after Fergy went down and Crudder got nicked. We have no depth at LB. Mediocre at best. It will take a few more years.

I have no real expectations for the Phins, but, like I have said all along if we can get in the playoffs anything can happen.

NJ,

I'm posting from England but wish i lived in the States to be honest. This place is awful.

Yeah, anyway, sorry about last night dude. Did'nt mean to act like a complete tit.

I'll catch up with ya laters...

ya gonna kiss each other's a.s.s ?Get back to football .

NJ PHIN!... It's go time bud!,

You are REALLY gonna tell me you think McClain is a good pass rusher? If he doesn't have a gaping whole you could drive a truck through he isn't even smelling a sack...period!

I am DEADLY serious, he is NOT gonna be an impactful pro and if the Phins draft him I will throw up in my mouth. You have to admit I am the one going out on the HUGE limb on this call and I stand to get egg of my face for swimming upstream from the masses but, I am not going to buy into hype and dismiss what my own eyes see.

You are dang right I would take Brandon Graham (reach or not) as I at least think he can bring it. He WILL transition just fine to OLB and would stop the outside runs and get sacks. How many sacks do you think sack master McClain will have? Whatever it is I think BG doubles his or more. BG is the consumate Charlie Hustle type player.

I will bet you on this one. A post with 3 x "Your the KING and I can never doubt you again" all double spaced, if I am wrong. If I am right you and a ton of McClain bandwagoners will have to admit he is average or below as a pro and give me the same post on this blog!

When I said they funnel him plays I am talking they have so many talented players he comes in for mop up many times after other Alabama teamates have made initial contact. With his dimensions he should be killing guys and he just doesnt. As for his study habits I can't answer for that... I'll cede that he studies a ton and eats football books if you say so. As for putting guys in there places that is suppose to be the job of the ILB in most any DEF.

I will tell anyone reading this to go to Youtube and type in Universal Draft and watch all of McClain's (ahem) awesome game vids. Then come back and talk to me about the huge pop and explosion and you can call out the numbers on the video timer. I am dying to see your rendition of a ton of super activity and massive pops. Sniffing out so many screens and draws and what he personally did about them. When he pass rushes he gets stone walled a bunch of times.

Remember: The scouts didn't have a problem with Gholston going where he went to the Jets... VG may be more of a bust than McClain but McClain won't be better than average in my ever so humble opinion. Scouts & GM's can be wrong like everyone else my friend. An art not a science, full of imeasurables.

Remember II: I said Spiller had the most talent if he was there at #12 and you scoffed. I had to research a better defender that I could live with than McClain and BG is that guy. Even though he will go later in the draft and lacks McClain's speed and overall and athleticism, Brandon Spikes will be a better ILB!

The game is a foot! Choose your weapon good sir... 10 paces! LOL

Cheers,

NJ PHIN, Cont...

As for S T Mays, I don't see him getting out of the 1st round. Organizations fall in love with big, athletic guys and some feel they can pull a Thomas Davis Carolina switch with Mays to OLB.

He will put up some eye popping numbers at the combine and someone will bite. Granted 1 pick in the Senior Bowl won't change the knock against him but, the Taylor Mays in college probably tries to knock that receiver out instead of going for the pick...it's just the way he prefers to play. He was trying to show scouts he could be coached to go for the INT and not just the big hit. Because he is not a true ballhawking type of Safety and I am not even campaigning for him to go to the Fins.

I will say I think Earl Thomas is a tad too light for my taste as a safety. He may be able to make the picks but, I think his run support will be a different story when the Ronnie Brown's, AP's and Leron McClain's of the NFL come a runnin.

DE Pierre-Paul is very raw, played vs lower level competition and has his knocks. I think the team getting him will have to have some patience and work with this kid. He has ability to rush the passer and can redirect to charge again. His frame is sound from a build standpoint...Kinda reminds me of a JT type of build and I know PP is heavier coming out of college than JT was.

These two guys are players I had heard a lot of hype about but, in my post you can clearly see I stated I was leary of both of them. I don't think either would be a fit for the Fins and I would choose other players.

Cheers,

NJ PHIN is an azzzzzzz

you are right in one sense but you are wrong in another if we did not lose ronnie brown in the 9th game of the season I think we make the playoffs and once you are in the playoffs anything can happen so they are close in that sense with 7 and 9 record ,close to making the playoffs, but you are right in the sense they don't have a manning or brees , but they do have perhaps the best one two punch with ricky and ronnie and they were in every game this year except buffalo they are not just saying the games against the colts and saints but every game was contested . I think they are closer to being a high caliber team than being one that goes in reverse like 4 and 12 or something,of course they are in big trouble at linebacker thats all go fins forever

Rob in OC, two full novels to tell us you like Mays and Graham, shorten it up bro

if joey thinks he's so important why doesn't he fetch even a 7th round pick?????? tomlin was very smart in not resigning that idiot! we gave that blowhard 33 million; all to a bigmouth who couldn't TACKLE. i'll take matt roth anyday over that jerk.

Traveling yesterday and missed the news about Porter. Kind of disturbing the front office didn't know Porter would bust the cap.

Don't they pay someone to keep up with stuff like that?

coco,
no big deal. If anything other teams now know that the Phins will drop Porter before March 10 and is some other team wants him at his current contract they can initiate a trade March 5th -March 9th. Don't expect a trade though just the drama.

Mouth, I don't know where ur getting ur news but Porters bonus is due on the 4th, they have to pay it before they cut him...it's not the tenth

Sorry, I typed in wrong date, his roster bonus is due March 1st, not the 4th but it certainly isn't the 10th...

Mouth, yeah, no harm, no foul. But from what I read, there was some "red faces" in Davie.

Just read the Dolphins traded Matt Thomas (long time cap guru) to Cleveland and got Dawn Aponte. Apparently Dawn gets the blame for it.

bobby...

read the miami herald dolphins section headlin story...

BY JEFF DARLINGTON
jdarlington@MiamiHerald.com

..." Beyond that, the Dolphins don't have any reason to sweat as a result of Friday's situation. The team doesn't owe Porter his $1 million roster bonus until March 10, so they will have five days after the start of the league year to release the linebacker."

He will be paid his bonus on March 1st and be cut on March 5th...no one will be willing to trade for him to pay him 5 million when they just wait a couple days and renegotiate a much lower pay day, he's not worth 5 million...we gonna eat that bonus, that's life, that's how it goes

Mouth, David Neal of the same Herald wrote a story yesterday saying March 1st, WQAM had multiple football people on last night saying March 1st, ESPN reported March 1st..now I will give you there is a couple reports saying the 10th, but the majority of the consensus say March 1st, which would seem to make mote sense...believe me, I would hope ur right but multiple sources say the first

bobby,

the miami herald, sun sentinel and palm beach post are reporting different bonus days than you. March 10th . read their articles. I do not expect a trade either. just speculation.

bobby, we will see. perfect end to a frustrating season and era. change is painful sometimes. I hope ross des not have to pay that bow-hard.

typo... I hope ross does not have to pay that blow-hard.

New blog up on Porter guys, unfortunatly nothing on bonus but hopefully Armando can get the answer

Rob in oc , it's go time ??? Really ?? I think you have no idea of what the hell you 're talking about as far as scouting and responsibilties of players in the 3-4 system and 3-3 systems. Nice try covering up your plays get funneled to mcclain statement by saying they have so many good players that he came in on plays to mop up. What ?? That's totally untrue and possible. Also where the hell did i say anything about mcclain and pass rushing ?? find it for me ?? Now your making up things. You saying that you'll take my word that he studies football and game films day and night and is a student of the game shows me you didn't do your homework on mcclain . This is a well known fact by everyone who has followed mcclain. Why do mention One player like gholston ?? 2 different players , 2 different positions. Think patrick willis

Earl thomas is 5-10 197 pounds, sanders and polamalu are 5-10 205 and 207 respectfally. Thomas is only 20 years old and has room to grow. He can easily put on 10 pounds in the next year or 2. Hes a ballhawk and fromer cb whick means is great in coverage. he's going to good one , better than mays.

Rob in OC , "it's go time ". that's hilarious !!. I played div-1 football for a big time football program and i train high school and college athletes at my gym ( that i own ) in strengh , explosion and endurance workouts everyday besides training others in bodybuilding and power lifting. I know a thing or 2 on film study , x's and o's , training and the game of football. I'm not some guy that only watches football on tv or reads stuff on the internet like most of the people on here. If you want it to be on , you got it but your out of your league a little bit. No worries. Cheers.

boobyd12, NJ PHIN,

You guys are starting to slip a bit... I will give you both a lil out to take.

I am sure because you had to do a little reading (on a blog? Have mercy!) that you muct have skimmed the post instead of actually reading it. If so you would both know that I said I would NOT want Mays as a fin. I specifically have Mays & PP on a gonna go in the 1st round and I would be "Leary" list. Meaning you would be very careful before choosing that player. The does NOT mean I am targeting Mays OR Pierre Paul as they were both in the same category on my post.

Let me know if you both are hoping onto the other post or are were continuing this one here?

Gholston was all athlete who had had NO FOOTBALL INSTINCTS AT ALL. Very poor football player , instincts , and not a student of the game. I knew he would be a bust and so did alot of scouts. Mckain is the total opposite . He's very instinctive , a leader and a student of the game and the scouts love him.

Rob in oc , i said i was glad you had mays going late 1st round in yesterday's post. What are you talking about ?? I think you're slipping a bit. LOL ! i will be going to the new blog and talk about that topic or others. i was just responding to you and only you on here, cheers

NJ PHIN, ( I love a good, healthy debate... keep it up bro :)

You do realize that there are coaches that have played and coaches that have not played? The ones that haven't are usually handy with theirs words for inspiration and provide sound teaching techniques through learning the game, study, solid drills and demonstration. I am not at all saying that it's some sort of advantage not to have a background playing whatever sport one wants to be an authority on... I'm just saying not every single person coaching has played that particular sport.

Also, there are stud football players, wrestlers, & MMA guys that can't teach a lick but can absolutely kick butt at their actual craft. Rickson Gracie for one is not near as solid of a teacher but destroys people in the ring with his Jiu Jitsu and combat techniques.

So out of my league on a blog that is opinion on a theory craft such as evaluating talent... I don't believe so. NOTE: The best in the business fail miserably at identifying studs. That is what makes this all such a blast... we get to armchair GM against all the so called best scouts, pundits and agents and see how we fare.

Look, I realize that you played D-1, now do lots of strength training and understand the game of football...that's apparent. I am not trying to do anything but compare notes after the season starts. That is the only REAL way to see whom has the eye for talent and who may be off the mark.

I am very glad that most on this board support the Fins. I look into the stands at Fins stadium and it's obvious the amount of real fans at the games is... meh, not so hot. Becuase they buy lots of tix and give them away to avoid blackouts is not the same as Denver or Green Bay where they live it. Maybe if they can turn them into a playoff bound team yearly the people will fill the stadium more readily. The theory for the same phenomena in San Diego (who also has a similar attendance problem is there are too many things to do in a warm weather, coastal city. (Surf, swim, water ski, bike, climb mountains, atv, desert runs, go to Mexico, drive 3 hours north and ski in winter etc.)

I watch every snap of every game and even when the went 1-15... I literally can't turn it off even if it's killin me to see the loss. I live and die with the Fins.

Cheers bud,
