« Ronnie Brown: Not interested in leaving Miami | Main | The failure of Porter's termination a concern »

Are the Dolphins close to Saints, Colts? No!

In the aftermath of Super Bowl XLIV, I cannot tell you how many times I've heard this phrase: The Dolphins aren't that far off from winning a Super Bowl. They played both New Orleans and Indianapolis well and should have beaten them. So they're close.

The logic apparently follows that since the Dolphins lost to Indianapolis 27-23 the second week of the season, then lost to New Orleans 46-34 on Oct. 25th, Miami is close to being pretty good because those two teams are obviously championship caliber.

And it's not just fans seeing the Dolphins through this prism.

"I think we're close," Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown said on his Ronnie Brown radio show on 560-WQAM this week. "I think we have a lot of the right pieces to the puzzle. I think we still have a few things we need to tweak and get better at. But as a team, we're pretty close.

"We played both those teams this year and, to our credit, we were in the games and had an opportunity to win both of those games. So that says, as a team, we're close. But there are a few pieces to the puzzle we've got left."

Now, you're not going to like this so if you're not in the mood for an honest dose of reality, simply stop reading now. That way you'll go on about the rest of your day thinking your team is close to being Super Bowl-caliber because it hung tough with the two Super Bowl teams.

The rest of you, read on.

The Dolphins are nowhere near close to the Saints or the Colts.

Some facts:

NFL teams are judged by what they do through an entire season, not by what they do in one game. And during the 2009 regular season, the Colts were 14-2 while the Saints were 13-3. The Dolphins were 7-9. So Indy won twice as many games as Miami while the Saints almost accomplished the feat.

Both the Saints and Colts won their respective divisions and were No. 1 seeds in the playoffs. The Dolphins finished third in the AFC East and didn't make the playoffs

The Dolphins aren't close.

Any logic that suggests one team is comparable to another based on the outcome of one game must be uniform. So anyone saying the Dolphins are close to the Saints because they almost beat the Saints, must then have to keep a straight face as they say the Washington Redskins are close to being as good as the Saints. The Redskins, after all, lost to New Orleans by a 33-30 score on Dec. 6th. And yes, the Saints played everyone in that game and did everything they could to win.

So do you think the Redskins are close to the Saints?

Taking the argument one step further, if you think the Dolphins are close to the Super Bowl champions based on playing them close in one game, you must also believe the Tampa Bay Bucs are better than the champs. Yes, Tampa Bay beat New Orleans 20-17 on Dec. 27th.

And you cannot argue the Saints gave up in that game because Drew Brees completed 32 of 37 passes for 258 yards with 1 TD. He completed 10 more passes against Tampa than he did against Miami. But the Bucs won.

So do you think Tampa Bay fans are foolish enough to believe they're close to being as good or better than New Orleans?

The Dolphins aren't close.

Finally, of course, there's the empirical argument against the Dolphins: The Saints have better players. And more of them. The Colts have better players. And more of them. That cannot be disputed by any right-thinking NFL fan or player.

Tell me ... what player on the Dolphins offense rises to the level of a Drew Brees or Peyton Manning? Let me answer -- none.

What receiver on the Dolphins could start for the Saints or Colts? Let me answer -- none.

What defender on the Dolphins makes as many game-changing plays as either Indy's Dwight Freeney or Who Dat's Darren Sharper? Let me answer -- none.

The Saints had seven Pro Bowl players in 2009. The Colts had seven Pro Bowl players in 2009. The Dolphins had three -- Yeremiah Bell, Dan Carpenter and Jake Long.

Long didn't play because of injury. Bell got on the team because Indy's Antoine Bethea was in the Super Bowl. And Carpenter played because Nate Kaeding injured himself the first day of practice.

So both Super Bowl teams have more than twice as many Pro Bowl players as Miami, even when we all know the reason the Dolphins had three was due to extenuating circumstances.

The Dolphins aren't close.

And it pains me to hear Dolfans saying they are close to the Saints and Colts because it suggests they're not being realistic. Or just don't know what they're talking about.

Cmon smartman. most of the posters on here are using their regular screennames and are signed in. . I have a feeling of who you are but i'm not 100% sure. Man up , so i can take you more serious . i'm using my name and i get attacked all the timeand to tell you the truth , i don't give a shyt when they do . It shows how pathetic they are and how sad.

GoPats - Miami is not even close to the Patriots huh? Interesting thing is that would be true, but the Patriots got beat by Miami this past season by a rookie QB in his 9th start and we were also without our best offensive weapon, Ronnie Brown!!

The Cheaters are going on a DECLINE!!

when a team is bad or doesnt make the playoffs any player on those teams thats interviewed says theyre close to being a good team it happens all the time whats ronnie supposed to say uhh we suck and were going nowhere geez dont take every thing these players say as gospel mando

It is really sad and pathetic that you 2 jet trolls feel the need to come onto our discussion and spew your jelously and hatred. No one here cares about you or your lousy losing fnrachise....get it?

Shows what 40+ years of being a laughingstock in the league will do to you. Rot your little brains. Funny that NO OTHER TEAMS FANS are the delusional, obnoxious, ignorant trolls you few are. Get a life and go blow

Patfarm is another delusional wannabe stuck in the past. Remember the Fins OWN the better head-to head record against the patiz. At least the cheatriots have a past unlike the loser jets. This division is up for grabs and the pats best days are long behind them. Dream on and go slurp some chowder.

I wonder if at the end of 2008-09 the Saints fans and their local media "experts" were pondering the same questions when they finished 8-8 with pretty much the same team that just won the Super Bowl?

Over a decade of running the franchise into the ground and this is suppose to be fixed in 2 seasons? Give me a break!

The underlying point in Armando's post is quite clear and their names are Drew Brees and Payton Manning. If we were to add Tom Brady, Philip Rivers, Brett Favre, Kurt Warner and to a lesser degree, Eli Manning, Donovan McNab, Tony Romo and Aaron Rodgers we would get a pretty good picture of the perennial playoff teams.

So while I won’t argue Armando’s point, I think we are in fact one player away… The question is whether Chad Henne is that player? Okay, so everyone can start calling me an idiot about now, but if there is any doubt Henne is the man than I would keep drafting QBs until we found him. It may sound too simplistic but having a great QB in this league spells playoffs and SBs, without a great QB it really doesn’t matter how good a team is assembled around a mediocre one.

I know I will hear about the Tampa and Baltimore one year wonders argument but isn’t it funny that both of those teams cut their QB before the next season because even those coaches knew the only way to consistent success in the NFL rides on the arm of a great QB. Period…

We all saw what happen when Peyton Manning came out the game when they played the Jets during the regular season. The Colts are at best 6-10 without him.

WestVAfins, "I bet he beat you out many years ago for this writign job and now you terrorize his blog". You want the REAL story? Here it is. I've been reading Mandos stuff since he started this blog and was a huge fan. When Parcells took over and kicked the media out of the facility Mando was pissed. Yeah it sucked for him and the other reporters but I had grown tired of the way some reporters had taken advantage of the organization in the past. The biggest offender was that jerk off Dan Lebetard. They would pit players against eachother and write things about coaches feelings about a player that would then hurt the comradarie of the team. They were doing HARM TO OUR TEAM! Now understand I didn't believe Mando to be one of those guys. In comes Parcells and he kicks the media out (just like Belichick did in NE) and I'm thinking,,,"GREAT, no more BS articles that hurt my team AND it's fans". At that moment, and understand this is my opinion, it felt like Mando turned on the franchise. It seemed his writing style started to change and I felt and still feel to this day that he has an axe to grind and is overly critical of OUR team. Take this article for example,,,he's calling us names for believeing our team is closer than he thinks?! WTF is that and what makes him an expert? He completely ignored the injuries and makes correlations that make no sense. Why so critical? Why stick the knife in deeper? And why in the hell are people allowed to take up a whole page with "JERSEY LIKES TO SNIFF POOPERS" ON A F***ING football blog? I've asked that we get some rules in here so we can all enjoy talking football and Mando just ignores me which I believe is based on his page hits declining if he were to set a few ground rules but that's another story. So I come in and read about peoples every day lives and IT'S RUINING THIS ONCE GREAT FOOTBALL BLOG. It has turned into a chat room for everything from politics to religion. And now some of you want ME to step in line? I'M THE STEP IN LINE GUY FOR CHRISTS SAKE! Where were you sticking up for me when I was preaching the same thing?! There's the gods to honest truth for you, take it or leave it, I don't care either way.

Here we go again with your typical offseason b*u*l*l*s*h*i*t! What player rise to Manning or Brees ? These guys are 10 yr vets! Gimmie a break! Chad Henne will be a top 5 QB next yr. Your the same guy that wanted to give Cam Cameron a second chance....gimmie a break!

And a little friendly advice for you. If you want someone to go away just ignore them. I would have left two hours ago if no one had commented on my posts. Ya see what I mean? I would've become bored and left but a couple of you actually made it fun for me to stay. Live and learn.

I think the Mando fan/not a fan thing needs to be cleared up. To be taken seriously as a journalist, you have to at least appear to be objective. That means reigning in emotion, bias and favoritism. I'm almost certain they teach that in journalism 101. In other words, not being a fan(atic).

Anyone who has participated in blogs during the games this past year knows that Mando is a fan. Get it?

Sorry Indiana, I didn't get what you were saying and I'm not understanding your argument. My bad.

Smartfan i think the point was just that we dont really care what mando has to say. Whether he is a dolphins fan or not who cares. He provides a forum for us to place our opinions and he does the same. I am not going to crucify the guy because he feels a certain way. I like to read what he has to say right or wrong and then we feed off of that to make meaningful conversation. I do not take his articles and bash him over the head for not being a fan or being bias. He can feel however he likes about any subject. It does not change my view on certain things. If you want all thiis change on the blog start with your post.

Jersey you're right. I had a falling out with this blog but there are some great posters in here and I miss talking Phins football as I'm stuck in NY and don't have a lot of phins fans to converse with. I'm still a little mad at Mando but he's just doing his job and I have to take it a little less serious. I'm very passionate about our team and that passion gets the better of me sometimes when sticking up for them against their detractors. I will start signing in again and will try not to take Mando so seriously. I just hate when I disagree with him and I get a bunch of Mando fans telling me off. He's a big boy and has always defended himself very well when we disagree. He doesn't need some of those tools helping him. So by my long posts and the NY revelation I'm sure you and a few others know who I am now. Talk to you soon.

smartfan no one meant to hurt your feelings dont pout so much.

its all in good fun................

Carlito whats up?????

WestVaFins, point well taken and I'm glad to see the blog has attracted some real fans who like to talk football. I'll fall back in line and start signing in again. Said I never would come back but I couldn't stay away from you knuckleheads! We should have some great debates and conversations this offseason and I'm looking forward to it. Sorry to anyone I offended and talk to you guys later. Also, I'm sorry to Armando if any of my criticisms were over the top and I do thank him for running this blog and giving us somewhere to talk Dolphins football. NYS

Westva,

Not much... just reading today

soooo now i will ask again.... any new news on boldin? and i must say i have asked now for a third time but i really do not care if we get him or not...

"dont pout so much". :)

AAAAAAHHHH !!! Yes , that last post confirmed my speculation 100% . You sure gave us enough hints in that last post , ya think ??? LMFAO !! It's good to hear from you again. I will not reveal your identity until you feel fit to do so.

How about ideas on a different reciever than Boldin im just not really sold on him and we all know that Brandon Marshall will not and i hope will never be a dolphin.

Question: How good is the Colts without Manning? All indications are that they are a 9-7 team. How good was that Pats without Drew B? Again a 9-7 to 10-6 team. A super star makes that kind of difference. Same goes for the Saints. We need to hope Henne becomes an elite QB. We also need another play maker on offence and the ability to pressure the QB on deffence. So the way I look at it, we are 1 or 2 very lucky draffs away from being a great team. This will also give our younger stars a chance to mature in their position. If we get very lucky, we are superbowl bound in 3 years. If we are not, then we are good enough to challenge for a playoff spot only.

WVF,

I havent heard anything about Boldin but I think it's still a little early. Mando has a point in some ways. At the same time, I dont think BP and Sparano are trying to build a team like Indy and the Saints so its apples and oranges. The Saints were bad before Gregg Williams stepped in and I hope Nolan has the same impact here.

When healthy we were very much in the mix. We were a better team than the Jets so anything could have happened. Tempered expectations.

WestVafins, no trades can be made before March 5th but there is a bit of news from Gridiron Gab that claims the Cards are interested in ahemm Joey Porter, I'm only reporting what I read so don't jump on me NJ LOL... According to the report, Dolphins would give up a third and Porter for Boldin and Arizona paying Porters roster bonus..sounds ridiculous but that's what was reported

Carlito, wrong. He's not nyfinfan. He's a long time poster . we've had our share of differences involving politics but when it comes to football we get along. He's a good guy and means well about the dophins. He's passionate about the dolphins just like most of us . As for the politics stuff he delusional and he needs help. LMFAO !! J/K :)

Now someone said yesterday that the trade can be decided on by both parties but must wait until march 5 for league approval. Is that correct>?

Nflgridirongab.com

Could it be the man who coined the moniker many-me?

I think Ronnie might know a little more than you or any of us, so I'm gonna take his word.

WestVaFins - Teams can discuss anything they want, but nothing will be official until the 5th of March

Wesva I tell you yesterday no trades till march heehaaw heehaw

Oh i figured you would come on here today to confuse everyone with poor grammar and lack of sentence structure. wow did we miss you today.

Indiana did you have earthquake the other day?

Maybe I build sentance not so good but at least I know football and when can trade.

I have to disagree in part with this article. Any team in the NFL can make the right moves in the off season and go from bad to vastly improved or from mediocre to very good or from good to spectacular. I'm not sure where this dolphins team fits in but it's not spectacular or bad. So I will stay positive and say they are just like every other team including the colts! They need to make the right moves get a little luck and first and first off start the season better 0-3 is definetly not acceptable at this point in the parcells era! Go phins!!!

As for the subject of this blog, I agree with many posters that anything could happen next year or the year after. We could win a SB next year (although I wouldn't hold my breath) but IMO we are still a middle of the pack team. To be a perennial contender will take a number of pieces and 2-3 years of solid drafting and that is assuming Henne is the guy for the job.

I would venture to say that you dont know as much football as me and if you had any reading comprehension skills you would see that i know that trades cannot take place until march 5 but the question was that someone had mentioned it can be agreed upon by both teams before and then made official on the 5. Read closely and dont be so obnoxious.

NJ PHIN, from early on page 1

That's a good one. If I think a player has talent similar to RB Chris Johnson and want him in a Dolphins uniform because I don't see a Jr. Seau type LB @12 I'm dellusional??

I can't simply be saying, by my own judge of talent, I deem him the most talented all around football player that would help the Fins get to the SB the fastest?

Have I EVER said the Fins are one player away? Answer: Never. Have I not posted a zillion times a recipe for getting more Def help than any draft before it. Quick sample breakdown..

DEF FA LB Dansby (1 FA is not a pie in the sky dream, it's doable)

1st Off Spiller RB, WR, PR, KR
2nd DEF Weatherspoon or Spikes ILB
3rd DEF Angerer OLB fast, active, caverage ability
4rth DEF Cody, Cam Thomas, Troupe NT (If they think all 3 will be gone flop 3rd 4rth rounds)
5th None
6th DEF or BPA x3
7th DEF or BPA x1

Yeah, I am a dellusional Off freak with a draft like this.

You are definitely the glass is half empty type team evaluator. I just can't see how you're thinking the Fins are always so far away when in the last 5 years the top seeds have only gotten to the Bowl this year. Parity is rampant and all you have to do is get into the second season to have a shot. Do you honestly think the Jets walked away from the Championship game saying to themselves..."Boy, we were just too lucky to be here...we won't be here again for years?". They backed into the playoffs with help from Indy and almost nailed Indy for doing so.

My plan would potentially 9 Def additions (inc FA) as I have laid it out. We can grab a super multi faceted Off talent that goes top 15 and still help the Def all day long as this is a deep draft.

Why do I get labeled dellusional? I would respect the argument more if someone said I was too Def minded. I always see these people say we need Def and then say with my 2nd or 3rd pick I would get a TE or WR. I am not. Maybe a guy like WR Freddie Barnes in round 6 if he is there as I did say Best Player Available.

I have thick skin so no worries on if we can carry on and still be kewl. I think Bootang25 said it best, "Favored" to win the SB is a heck of a lot different than "Can" win it. I think next year, with some better fortunes injury wise, the Def growing and Nolan getting more from it's personnel, a less difficult schedule on paper, I feel the Fins could make the playoffs. As history reveals...anything can happen then.

westva anybody can agree to anything they want but nothing matter until march. I tell you this yesterday and you and waterboy don't believe in me like stubborn donkeys

Stop try to pretend you smart when you so stupid

GREAT GREA GREAT POST ARMANDO....the dolphins delusional dreamer (DDD) needs the dose of reality to sooth them

I forget more football when I drinking aguardiente than you ever knew in you whole life country boy

Bobbyd12,

Giving up a 3rd and Porter (He was going anyway) seems like a good deal.

Now hopefully we resign Pennington, then trade Thigpen to the Bills (which was reported awhile back) for a 5th rounder so we get that 5th rounder back then go defense in the draft.

The awfulins will need a good draft to stay ahead of the Bills for last place aaallliiiggghhhtt.Doink%^&*!Jets just need to add depth going all the way next.Buurrrpp!

I am always,

I agree about middle of the pack(at least until after the draft). We have had 2 solid drafts and this will be the 3rd. If henne steps up, this year is a contender, and the rest are gravy. At least Norv Turner isnt our coach. Then we would be a contender that everyone knows wont be around by the SB.

Speaking of dellusional...

If anyone of us would have said, coming off a 1-15 season, that we would win the division and be 11-5 the next year... that label would fit.

And yet, it happened.

It took Brady going down in the beg. of the season, a new regime, new schemes and lots of luck and hard work but, we will all take the result.

It probably raised hopes a little too high for this season with a 1st place schedule and trying to stave off the major injury bug another year.

Cheers,

You call be stupid but yet the sentence that you put it in is completely butchered english. IRONY.... I think that porter and a 3rd would be fine but i do hate losing that third round pick but im sure we can find a way to get another.

Yeah, i agree WestVaFins. I'd love to have Boldin but we must do everything to get back that 3rd rounder. Trade Ginn?

And this will be my last comment that is not completely about football. To clear up any confusion... West Virginia is not all just country sides and farms. We have cities too. I dont live on a farm, i do not raise livestock, i do not drink moonshine. I live in a city. I do not fish, i do not hunt. So when you try to stereotype someone for where they live you should know more about that place before yoou do. Ok now back to football.....

I think before anythign happens with Ginn he gets a year with a solid qb (Henne) and then if they bring Boldin or someone like that in then we would have to see how they work together. It could be a nice combo.

So you and Pat White didn't grow up together throwing passes and trying to hit the barn door??

LOL, I kid, I kid. Just joking WVF.

WV Fin,

I hate to lose the 3rd too but at least we are getting instant contribution out of it. We could possibly get a 4th for Ginn then. Flacco could sure use some targets...

I like the idea of dolphins signing Keith Bullock from Tennesse. The only trouble is for him to switch to a 3-4. Titans use a 4-3 right?

t,

Titans run a 4-3...correct.

I usually love your articles; but this one was bogus.

First - we played well all year, unlike the Redskins and Bucs. Our losses to the Colts and Saints highlights our inability to close out wins againts good teams. This is an area that requires improvement, and it will be addressed; but it's not like we played 2 good games this year - we played many good games this year.

As a team, we are moving in the right direction in so many areas. We're young and improving. You're a comparing young, developing team to 2 teams that are at their peak.

Also, the Saints were 8-8 in 2008 and 7-9 the previous year. After the 2008 season, would you have said that the Saints were not close to winning in 2009? I'm guessing you would have. The reality is that adding a few key pieces pushed them over the top. Going into the 2010 offseason, the Dolphins are in the same situation. If we add a few key pieces we can win in 2010.

Maybe not very surprising but the Buccs have decided not to use the franchise tag on Antonio Bryant. Maybe he would be a better option than Boldin. At least we would'nt have to give up any draft picks...

LOL Rob, i could not be less country than i am lol. I agree that will help Henne and the recievers and we will see a major difference in our offense but as for losing the pick. Plus Boldins age and injuries concern me.
