« Ronnie Brown: Not interested in leaving Miami | Main | The failure of Porter's termination a concern »

Are the Dolphins close to Saints, Colts? No!

In the aftermath of Super Bowl XLIV, I cannot tell you how many times I've heard this phrase: The Dolphins aren't that far off from winning a Super Bowl. They played both New Orleans and Indianapolis well and should have beaten them. So they're close.

The logic apparently follows that since the Dolphins lost to Indianapolis 27-23 the second week of the season, then lost to New Orleans 46-34 on Oct. 25th, Miami is close to being pretty good because those two teams are obviously championship caliber.

And it's not just fans seeing the Dolphins through this prism.

"I think we're close," Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown said on his Ronnie Brown radio show on 560-WQAM this week. "I think we have a lot of the right pieces to the puzzle. I think we still have a few things we need to tweak and get better at. But as a team, we're pretty close.

"We played both those teams this year and, to our credit, we were in the games and had an opportunity to win both of those games. So that says, as a team, we're close. But there are a few pieces to the puzzle we've got left."

Now, you're not going to like this so if you're not in the mood for an honest dose of reality, simply stop reading now. That way you'll go on about the rest of your day thinking your team is close to being Super Bowl-caliber because it hung tough with the two Super Bowl teams.

The rest of you, read on.

The Dolphins are nowhere near close to the Saints or the Colts.

Some facts:

NFL teams are judged by what they do through an entire season, not by what they do in one game. And during the 2009 regular season, the Colts were 14-2 while the Saints were 13-3. The Dolphins were 7-9. So Indy won twice as many games as Miami while the Saints almost accomplished the feat.

Both the Saints and Colts won their respective divisions and were No. 1 seeds in the playoffs. The Dolphins finished third in the AFC East and didn't make the playoffs

The Dolphins aren't close.

Any logic that suggests one team is comparable to another based on the outcome of one game must be uniform. So anyone saying the Dolphins are close to the Saints because they almost beat the Saints, must then have to keep a straight face as they say the Washington Redskins are close to being as good as the Saints. The Redskins, after all, lost to New Orleans by a 33-30 score on Dec. 6th. And yes, the Saints played everyone in that game and did everything they could to win.

So do you think the Redskins are close to the Saints?

Taking the argument one step further, if you think the Dolphins are close to the Super Bowl champions based on playing them close in one game, you must also believe the Tampa Bay Bucs are better than the champs. Yes, Tampa Bay beat New Orleans 20-17 on Dec. 27th.

And you cannot argue the Saints gave up in that game because Drew Brees completed 32 of 37 passes for 258 yards with 1 TD. He completed 10 more passes against Tampa than he did against Miami. But the Bucs won.

So do you think Tampa Bay fans are foolish enough to believe they're close to being as good or better than New Orleans?

The Dolphins aren't close.

Finally, of course, there's the empirical argument against the Dolphins: The Saints have better players. And more of them. The Colts have better players. And more of them. That cannot be disputed by any right-thinking NFL fan or player.

Tell me ... what player on the Dolphins offense rises to the level of a Drew Brees or Peyton Manning? Let me answer -- none.

What receiver on the Dolphins could start for the Saints or Colts? Let me answer -- none.

What defender on the Dolphins makes as many game-changing plays as either Indy's Dwight Freeney or Who Dat's Darren Sharper? Let me answer -- none.

The Saints had seven Pro Bowl players in 2009. The Colts had seven Pro Bowl players in 2009. The Dolphins had three -- Yeremiah Bell, Dan Carpenter and Jake Long.

Long didn't play because of injury. Bell got on the team because Indy's Antoine Bethea was in the Super Bowl. And Carpenter played because Nate Kaeding injured himself the first day of practice.

So both Super Bowl teams have more than twice as many Pro Bowl players as Miami, even when we all know the reason the Dolphins had three was due to extenuating circumstances.

The Dolphins aren't close.

And it pains me to hear Dolfans saying they are close to the Saints and Colts because it suggests they're not being realistic. Or just don't know what they're talking about.

Any thoughts anyone on some late round sleepers? Here are a few I think could be sleepers:

Matt Mayberry (21 out of 153 ILB's)
Jammie Kerlew (21 out of 182 DE's)
Greg Middleton (30 out of 182 DE's)

WVAF, the Steelers had the best record in the league with BBR as their Qb in year 1. I'm proud to say I sat through a hurricane in Miami's Pro Player Stadium to watch his first start.

However, that is an unusual circumstance. I do believe that Cowher's policy in building a team is similar to Parcells' formula and it's a good one. That's why I'm happy in the direction of the team. it's the first time the team's had proper direction since JJ's first years here before he fell in love with teh keys and out of love with coaching.

In 2010, I would rank Miami about 16-18th overall in the NFL - that was with a boatload of injuries and a rook QB. I think with some luck, Henne's progress, some added talent to the D, and the continued progress of our young receivers coupled with our solid OL, it's realistic to expect Miami to be around 10-12th overall in the NFL.

After that is when you'll really see the patience of this regime and the emphasis on the draft really pay off as Miami should be among the elite after that and will stay there for a while.

I do believe.

Armando,

Are the Patriots close to the Saints since they got BLOWN out by them, but Miami actually had a chance to beat them...??

I do think your opinion on this write-up is incorrect. We all know we have some holes to fill, but the way you wrote this up you are acting like we are going in the wrong direction, but I don't feel we are. We are close, but then again it all depends what you consider as "close"...

Rob in OC. I've been a dolphins fan for 38 years and after what i've been through with the dolphins you better be grounded or you'll end up in a mental facility. I say miami makes a 2 game improvement to 9-7 ( maybe 10-6 ) but become a more sound team , especially on defense with nolan and some players.

38 years?!?!? How old are you NJ? Yero!! (sp?)

just joking, I'm no spring chicken at 35 years of age myself! :)

Good post Mark in T.

Would you go so far as to say in your scenario that Fins being 10-12 best could make the playoffs?

Could they do damage in the playoffs?

Just curious how the ranking translates to actual wins / losses and playoff aspirations or lack thereof?

Cheers,

Has anyone talked about two huge possible FS FA's? Nick Collins and Oshiomogho Atogwe?

Sporting News latest Mock Draft has us taking Darrius Thomas at 12th? Thoughts anybody?

Mark In Toronto - Don't you mean 2009 or are you predicting us to be 16th-18th overall this coming season(2010)

Good points Armando and I agree with you on most things but the AFC East is one of the hardest divisions in football right now... phins, jets and pats..... no other division except Dallas, Redskins, eagles is as competitive.

I think people confuse Joey Porter's value as a player versus his value to the Dolphins.

As a player, he has some value. However, because he doesn't want to be here, is declining and he has Wake sneaking up behind him deserving more snaps, his days in Miami are numbered. Period.

Now Trade value is another matter.. The fact that everyone knows Miami can and likely will cut Porter when push comes to shove lowers his trade value. The fact that Porter will not be a rotational player even if his age and dimishing skills lend to that lowers his trade value some more. The fact that he wants to be closer to his family narrows down the teams he would HAPPILY play for lowers his trade value some more..since he might retire if he is traded to Detroit.. and finally, if he is cut and becomes a UFA, then the few teams he would be willing to play for can set his new salary at a lower level, since he obviously is not worth a big salary any more..

point is, while teams would be interested in his services and he might have some value as a player, any team that really wants him and is located in a town closer to his family can just ride it out and wait until he is cut.. the only way we get anything for Porter is if we are willing to actually keep him long term and no one out there thinks we will keep him in our locker room for much longer..

You forgot to mention carrington , darius johnson and wil paterson from your indiana team. LMAO !! These guys are undersized 6th-7th round picks or undrafted players. Mayberry and Middleton could do something and maybe kirlew too. I f i had to pivk a guy he would be middleton who was rated higher at the beginning of the year.

NJ PHIN, Mark,

Im 43 been a Fins fans since the older kids on my block were talking them up in 72 and 73. Somehow that got me passionate about the Fins but it lay dormant until I actually got into football as a 9th grader.

I was in the San Diego area and the more they told me I had to like the Bolts the more I dug in. I bleed aqua and orange.

Now... I'm a restamalifer! lol

Cheers,

Typo-Demaryious Thomas

enrique1085

Oshiomogho Atogwe is not a FA. He is under contract with the Raiders for I believe another 2 seasons, maybe 3...

Mark , a little older that you but i look and feel like i'm in my 20's. :)

nevermind...I got the wrong guy or thinking of the wrong guy. It has been a long day

Mark,
Pittsburgh did not have the best record in 2005. They didnt even win their division if im not mistaken. They played on the road all the way through the playoffs.

http://blogs.nfl.com/2010/02/11/pierce-tells-newspaper-that-giants-have-released-him/

Thoughts anyone??

Typo again! Demaryius Thomas

I think is right this time, lmao

And that brings me to another thing I hear people saying over and over.. RE Matt Roth - why didn't we get something for him..

1. He faked an injury or was injured at the beginning of camp.. obviously something was going on that made the coaching staff upset and lose faith in Roth as a team player.
2. He was placed on PUP list..
3. When he came off the list, the TRADE DEADLINE had passed.. so even if we wanted to trade him, we could NOT
4. He did NOTHING for us.. wether because he stopped wanting to be here and was a selfish ass or because he was recovering from him fake injury - he did not bring anything to the table.
5. He was at the end of his contract and was going to be a FA at the end of this year.. PLUS, the coaches no longer thought he was buying into things/was a team player, so they were not going to play him anymore..

so stop saying we should have traded him for some value.. because we could not have! (unless we traded him at the end of last year, but at that time, he was growing into his new roll and playing well - seemed likea team player/keeper)

27 years for me and born and raised in NJ!!! and i'm a yankee fan, however.. Phins any day of the week and alllllll day Sunday!

Lips , good assessment on porter and his trade value.

NJ - I did mention late rounders, but I think these guys could be sleepers with a late pick or definitely pick up as undrafted. Wasn't James Harison undrafted??

Mayberry reminds me of Zach Thomas to be honest. Kerlew just seems to have that fight and be hungry (good heart).

Otogwe and nick collins are RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS !!!

Roth is another example of the doofins stupidity aaalllrrriiight.Buurrpp!

Jersey, 37 years for me as a Dolphin fan. Also a Yankee fan.

Oh I almost forget. I too feel like I am in my late 20's , maybe early 30's. LOL

Wait a minute...

How long did it take for Greg Williams to incorperate his style of Defense for the New Orleans Saints?
Two major plays on defense where turnovers that lead to victories in games against the Vikings for the NFC champioship and against the Colts in the SB. That is what the Saints did consistently all year was create turnovers.

Didn't the Saints finish 8-8 last year?

Did it not take head coach Sean Payton three years to win a championship?

It can be done and alot of pieces are in place for the Dolphins...save for some positions on D. Which will be addressed both thru free agency and draft.

But who knows what free agency brings...

News Flash: Antonio Pierce just stated to the Star Ledger that he's being released.
He is certainly better than any of our ILB we have on the team. Say we sign him and Dansby, we not only solidify those positions but free up other draft senarios. Primaryly a monster NT or OLB.

Like I said to Armando wait until the free agency market and the draft our done with, we will be better situated.

Regarding Henne, he will be better next year and showed more than enough promise to believe he can lead us into the playoff's. Once in anything can happen.

D Thomas won't even get drafted in the first round nevermind being taken at 12 .

Listen to NJ predict...he is GOD, f'kin idiot who should go home....wuss

It is foolish this early in the process to know how close we are to the upper echelon of teams. I know we were competitive in almost every game, we dealt with a high number of injuries. Going into the 08 season, anyone predicting we would win 11 games would have been called any different number of synonyms for crazy. Realistic fans last year would have expected with a tougher schedule a fall back to the middle of the pack. I would say going forward, we are closer to the top than to the bottom. What dictates where we end up is what occurs in the coming months. Though there have been errors, I think it can be agreed the front office has done a relatively good job. We have stability at QB and LT, something we didn't have for nearly a decade. I would think our success in finding talent will continue. We found an undrafted WR from Hawaii, a Pro Bowl K from Montana, a potential stud pass rusher from the CFL, and that's before I mention Long, Henne, Davis, Smith, and many others. Our front office looks everywhere for talent, and more importantly, the best players play. A players contract doesn't mean they are guaranteed anything. I for one look forward to what other talent this regime brings in.

Lipsin,

In a way Roth's scenario mirrors JP's. They could possibly get something in return (albeit ever so slight) if they keep the cancer, bad seed, declining attitude or whatever term anyone wants to give it onboard longer than they want while paying them as well. That's probably why it won't end up happening.

This regime doesn't seem to keep players on board that aren't "buying in" or "team players".

Keeping Taylor around worked out great when Wash suffered the injury they got a 2nd round pick. Taylor also keeps a good team minded viewpoint even when he wanted to go Dance with the Stars.

Like many have pointed out... the vultures will simply circle until JP lands in the FA desert.

Pierce has a bulging disk in his back.RISK

Update Miami just cut Brennan Marion (WR)...
the hot shot that blew his knee in TC

and no... it wasnt to clear a roster spot for Boldin

Yankees fan....GEEZ!! That is no good! lol j/k

FYI Bryant will be released by Bucs.... leverage in the boldin trade.

The problem with Porter is he is due a roster bonus on March 4th, and trades can not be officially completed until March 5th. Maybe some sort of under the table agreement can be made. But I just think it is a situation where realistically what is another team going to offer us for Porter? If we could thrown him and a 5th for Boldin, then paying the bonus wouldn't be so bad. Even in an uncapped year, keeping him past when his roster bonus is due is not really responsible.

Porter should be cut to show him he can not act however if wants in a locker room especially coming off the season he just did. Make a statement to show that any player who would like to follow in his footsteps (Crowder) will not be tolerated and dealt with as sooo./

Thanks NJ! I guess Sporting News isn't what I thought it was as far as insight.

And I know they are restricted FA's, but if a CBA is reached before the deadline? umm... that would be interesting

Thanks but don't miss the point, wait until free agency and the Draft are over.

WestVaFins - It would also prove that he can do what he wants and get anything he wants just by opening his mouth. I do not think cutting him shows him he cannot act the way he did to get into another locker room. It shows him if he acts that way he will get what he wants...

Oh and I hate Yankee fans!!! How can you guys be both Dolphin fans and Yankee fans??? lmao..

It's all about Bean Town! Whoop whoop

you're better than COTE ! Cote used to be the man, But sure , you're keeping it real, we need big time improvements. The tuna better come right this off-season, ala free agency, (please dont get Peppers) Hes washed up and please lets not give up D. Bess for anyone, he is excellent slot reciever, Thanks for the piece.

Dolphins4life has Henne as a top 10 qb next year. This is the kind of stupidity Armando is talking about. He will be fortunate to be the 3rd best qb in the afc east. As for bp drafting, who do you feel good about from the last draft?

enrique1085.. it is what it is!
and im a Celtic fan too! lol

i became a Dolphin fan when they played the Jets in the AFC Champ game. since then, its been Phins Phins Phins.... good and bad. and i BURRRRRRP hate the Jets

Vontae Davis

enrique1085 - I can't stand the Yankees.

Bart Starr - Fortunate to be the 3rd best qb in the AFC East, WTF dude? Obviously Brady is the consesus #1 in the AFC East. What is the head to head record between Henne and Dirty Sanchez? OH yeah Henne 2, Sanchez 0!! The Bills are completly irrelevant in the qb situation. Henne put up better stats then Dirty Sanchez this year and Henne only played 13 games...

Do we have a legitamate news reporter in Armando salguero??? No!!! But we are close.

Bart Starr-
How about Sean Smith, and Vontae Davis??? Brian Hartline??? I'll throw in Pat Turner, but he's still untested..

Not sure who else is a Yankee fan because I am Italian from ny and grew up on Shula and Marino and I haven't stopped loving them yet.. I think the arguments made are dumb and so is Mando in this case.. The Dolphins could win it all next year, this is the NFL.. Why does everyone forget how bad the cowboys were before there dynasty or the rams or the patriots or the cardinals.. If you don't believe, why watch, why root, why care.. I don't care what happens, every year I get ready for a special season.. If it not out year, I still look at the positives.. The 1-15 season was the only one I ever really couldn't swallow and maybe 1990 but otherwise, I looked forward to the next year, oh and I forgot 99 when I almost became a Viking fan.. I even had a hat with a 13 on it .. Lol

Dirty Sanchez: TDS-12 INT-20 YDS-2,444 Rating-63% Completion-53.8%

Chad Henne:TDS-12 INT-14 YDS-2,878 Rating-75.2% Completion-60.8%

Who is the better QB Bart Starr????

I love you to DOG at 3:29 pm . god has spoken.

hell yea we close and the redskins is too they have all the things in place but the offensive line if u look at football buddy and we are close becuz if we can stay healthy then we are there

Well Bart got real quiet and shut his mouth. LOSER

HAHA

Don't Chemtrail me,Bro!

So what is the video of?

Is this guy really trying to tell me that Lance Moore or Austin Collie are any better than Devon Bess or Greg Camarillo? WRONG! What we don't have is a Reggie Wayne or a Marcus Colston. Trying to compare the Yucs on the Deadskins to the Phins this past year is simply bush league journalism. Let's also remember that we swept the Jets who also played in the AFC championship.

Who cares...?? It has nothing to do with football!!

westvafins you have no idea what country I come from. Whatever you think is wrong. You even still waiting for Ted Ginn to be good player hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Show how smart you is

Indiana, the chemtrails thing is home superbowl 2010. His conspiracy theory that the government is spraying these chemicals into the air for some reason is complete garbage.

If you want to know the true story then google petunias taking over the world and you will find out that the real story is there!! Hey it couldn't be any more retarded than his theory, right?
