Ireland defends Wilson, suggests he's staying

Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland just finished speaking with the media and the most interesting thing from the talk, in my opinion, was his whole-hearted defense of Gibril Wilson and suggestion the free safety will remain with the Dolphins in 2010.

Ireland was asked if Wilson took too much of the blame for the troubles of the defense in 2009.

"He's playing a position with two young corners," Ireland said. "A lot of things you would try to blame on him ... those weren't always his fault. We have our evaluation of Gibril Wilson. We know what kind of player he's capable of being. I think he's going to be a very good player for the future. He was disappointed in his play last year.He will tell you that. I think he can play better. We'll just have to see. I think he will."

In talking to several reporters who attended the presser, including The Herald's Jeff Darlington, the clear indication they got is that the Dolphins intend to keep Wilson.

That even as the NFL is headed toward an uncapped year and cutting Wilson after March 5 would not cause any salary cap issues. Wilson signed a five-year, $27.5 million deal in 2009 that included a $5 million signing bonus and a total of $8 million in guarantees.

So what do you think?

By the way, the live blog of the NFL Combine continues in the comments section. See you there.

understand we have to fill the needs but if the pats get him or someone else in the east and he starts ripping miami apart which he will then, spiller is not the type a guy you say we can find someone like him later

They always talk somebody up before trading or dumping them. He's gone!

You don't pick a player to keep other teams from having him. You pick a player that will fill a need. Spiller doesn't fill a need. There's NO chance we draft him. If the rumors about Dansby are correct, you can be sure the Dolphins will select NT or OLB for sure with the first round pick.

i say go offense the first 2 picks then d-fence the rest of the way

Dolphins4life he said that in defending why Wilson wasn't productive last year as in if it wasn't for them, he would've played better. It wasn't a complete toss under the bus but he did get a little distance on the throw. And he never really held Wilson accountable for HIS deficiencies. If two low paid rookies can be pointed at when talking about mistakes than you certainly should be able to point out one overpaid veterans mistakes as well. I defend this team and it's upper management probably more than most but Ireland is really starting to annoy me. I also want to see improvement in their record this season as taking a step back will be unacceptable.

i'd be really really upset if we keep him. ireland saying that the "young corners" are part of the reason why he played so bad is a complete fabrication. he missed an outrageous amount of tackles and failed to be the last line of defense way to many times, so quite frankly he completely did the opposite of what his job requires and most of those cannot be put on rookie corners.

we should draft eric berry if he's available at 12.

Toneman, you are entitled to have your opinion. But I disagree with you.

He's on his third team in three years. To believe a guy is suddenly going to improve in his SEVENTH season to be someone he hasn't been before is really stretching optimism.

I think I remember that play and Smith undercut the throw instead trying to make the INT...instead of wrapping up the WR and securing the tackle, that was a rookie mistake. But yes I see your point and that was Irelands point, if Smith makes the tackle end of play, story and G-Wil ass is covered.
Your right that he should have been there as a last line, but Smith's rookie error doesn't help and there layeth some fault...

i hate the way miami does things they are so old school thinking defense wins titles not in the new nfl miami needs weapons on offense so spiller would be one of those weapons

Mando , in all fairness there were alot of plays where davis in particular and smith were toasted without wilson being responsible . That's all to be expected from rookie corners. I think that's what Ireland meant.

I was not a fan of Wilson last year, I even affectionately called him "Gerbil" Wilson. Players sometimes excel in particular schemes. With Nolan coming to town and our two corners having some experience under their bet, Wilson may come into his own. I watched him miss tackles and drop balls that parcells could of caught and understand he needs to improve in that aspect.

I totally disagree. I say go defense first two picks and then worry about the offense. What's the use of picking an offensive player that will just sit on the sidelines watching a defense that can't stop anybody?

Drafting is like chess. You have to look 2-3 years in advance. We have ronnie and ricky this year. If we dont have them next year, theres this guy named Mark Ingram who could be available to the Dolphins next year. And his college career has been a "bit" more impressive than CJ Spiller's. Plus NE has 102938419 RBS, the Wets have Washington and Greene, and Buffalo is a mess. Who in the East is gonna grab Spiller in the 1st round?

Fire Parcells and hire Dan Marino and lets get back to Miami football

Yes, NJ, the CBs had their tough moments. They gave up some plays.

But they fought back! Davis had ints. Smith led the team in PDs.

How did Wilson fight back? What did he accomplish? What did he do that impressed you?

Bootang, to be honest... Most of the players that played against Briscoe are more likely to be working for UPS then the guys Thomas went up against. I mean we are doing what coaches, scouts and gms are doing as we speak and they make alot of money to do it. I don't know how stupid it is.

We agree Dolphins4life.

Does that worry you?

that is really the problem with the fins they think to far in the future instead of what can help them now look at the teams that have won the sb they get players that help them now not in a few years miami way of thinking is backwards look at the saints there players developed when they brought in a pass system with a great qb miami has the qb now they need the weapons and also look at the defense of those teams either last or next to last

The more I listened to Ireland, the more I have to believe they will revamp the entire LB corps.

Dansby? They'll chase him.
Rookie draft pick? Absolutely!

Armando, which FA would you rather have? Dansby or Rolle?

Armando if I may answer,,he fought back by working his way to the bench in a few of the final games. Sarcasm is wonderful. Seriously, the guy was benched by his coaches and now the GM is defending his play. I wonder if he stuck up for him during the benchings. Clemons was no where near ready to hit the field and call plays to the CBs and SS yet there he was at the end of the season. And that is why I believe Ireland is just being politically correct in pumping the guy up. So many things can happen from now until the first pre-season game.

OK guy's the Cuban has arrived, In 30 words or less what has transpired today????

Danny the Saints drafted their #1 WR Marques Colston in the 7th round. You want us to waste a 1st rounder on a RB in a new pass driven league. Your thinking backwards. The Saints won the Super Bowl because their defense stopped Payton Manning when they had to. Offense will get you to the Super Bowl, but DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Mike, Dansby.

But if you actually get him, you're pretty much done in free agency. Veeeery expensive.

I understand and that's the Trifecta's mantra, that what is said should be in the best interest of the team, and if that means Ireland feeding us BS then that's what he will do and I understand yours and everyone's else's frustration...
I know Wilson played bad you know and the Trifecta knows as well, this is just the PR games they play. The main thing is, and why I believe in the Trifecta is, sooner or later they will know when to pull the trigger and let Wilson go.

danny, you have to look at the big picture. The teams that are winning superbowls as you mentioned already have quality depth. The trifecta took over two years ago and had to start from scratch. You can't just buy a bunch of players and rely on them to stay healthy. You need quality people to back them up, you need young draft picks that are coming into their own. That's what the fins are starting to accumulate now so we should se some more quality signings starting this year and into the next three years. There is a formula to follow when rebuilding a team from scratch.

Offense, Defense, Defense, Offense... Different teams win different ways... You need talent on both sides of the ball... You can have a great defense but that will only take you so far... You need to put points on the board.

Guys I don't know if this has been reported or not because I have been away from the computer for a couple hours, but I know for a fact Dan Williams and Eric Berry amongst other are NOT in Indianapolis. I saw them this morning at the gym here in South Florida and they said their flights had been canceled!

Cuban, to recap:

Gibril Wilson is good. Patrick Turner is good. Chad Henne is good but we like Pennington as a possible backup. And Joey Porter is still a buttwipe.

Mando . I agreed on the cb's. As for wilson, many on here know i didn't want him on the team in the first place. I was just stating what ireland meant about the rookie cb's and that it wasn't ALL wilson's fault.

Mando since there really isn't a whole lot out there in FA this year, why not grab 1 of the top FAs and be done? Its not like we're are going to be missing out on a shopping spree of players

I do not think he is going to improve (wilson) But I do think he will be put in better situations to succeed! On a lot of plays he did not have much help, and the tackles he missed I do believe he will make just because of a new year. Crap happens sometimes. Wilson is not the weak link. The Inside of the defense is the weak link. All of our linebackers are too slow, or too weak. Our DT's are old and horrible, and we have two rookie CBs who did not impress me and W.Allen I was never impressed with. Crowder's mouth is bigger than his game is. I think Wilson will make those right tackles and right reads this year, call me Mr. Optimistic.

What do I think 'Mando? Here's what i think: Gibril Wilson 'aint staying. Look no further than this regine's comments about Ernest Wilford, Shawn Murphy, etc... praised right before being shown the door. See ya, Gibril. Don't let the door hit ya.

Dan Williams needs to be the 1st rd pick. Brandon Spikes in the 2nd.
Damaryius Thomas in the 3rd.
After seeing what D.Thomas can do I dont think that trading any of our picks for a receiver makes any sense. Also, I know most of you probably won't agree but I am still not ready to give up on Turner. WR take alot longer to be ready than most positions. We need to buy low and sell high, midway through the season if D. Thomas and Turner can produce, trade either Bess, Camarillo, Ginn, or Hartline...

I will make a prediction here gentlemen:

If Wilson is on the team in 2010, he will once again find himself benched at some point in the season. That is how much I doubt his ability to get significantly better in his seventh season.

Russell Okung has 36 inch long arms. I am currently guarding my lunch out of fear he might reach for it.

And I'm in Miami and he's in Indy.

NJ, I heard a good comparison for Rolando McClain yesterday... McClain = Brian Urlacher. I think I agree with that... You also think back to that draft, he went around pick 15 in that draft...

LOL @MANDO. excellent recap . :)

I see a rotation system with Clemons, much like OLB last year.

Marcus , Exactly !!!!

I agree. But you can't build them both at the same time. My point is defense is more important. Our offense the better side of the ball right now. So fix the defense and then you can fill in the offense next year.

No...the defensive front seven worries me.
Again the Trifecta will know when it's time to let G-Wil go. Both sides of the spectrum where evident, G-Wil needed better play from himself and the rookies. Yes we saw the rookie cb's grow and Wilson made some proggress after that the New Orleans' game but remember he is playing out of position. Does that excuse him no, but if say they find someone to play Wilson's position and Y Bell gets hurt, Wilson would come in hand and revert back to his natural position.

Urlacher being a finesse type LB, great in coverage, sideline to sideline LB.

But you do know that isn't the type of LB you put in the middle of a 3-4.

Top Reasons to keep Gibril(Why Mom, Why name me this??)Wilson, #1 Is on all the saints highlight reels(Mondo, check to see if he's getting residual pay for this)#2 On Sports Illu. Commercials, #3 How do you cut a guy with that type of name.#4promises to be on some other teams highlight reels in the future,#5 He's the Ted(Hands of stone)Ginn of the defense(And lets face it guys we need a whipping boy on both Offense and Defense) #6 he's not Joey(Duhhhh)Porter......

I agree with that 'Mando. He sucks. We all know it. The ONLY reason I could see Wilson staying is because the Trifecta would let pride interfere with common sense. I hope to God that doesn't happen.

what do you think about lamarr houston dt from texas? for third or fourth rounder? do you think hed be a good pick up for us?

keep us posted on this dude please

ps good predicition on gibril

now give my winning numbers? lol

There's 2 ilb's in the middle of the 3-4 , a 3-4 mcclain played in his entire career. He fits perfect. The urlacher comparison's have been there a while now.

Wasn't Wilson the run who watched Dallas Clark dart up the middle untouched on the first play against Indy?

How was that the CBs fault?

You might be right on that benching remark. But we shall see what events transpire in the coming months. Of course I would like some more speed back their and better tackles. I am not a GW fan but I think he played solid ball and their is much room for improvement. But that front seven is a mess and the secondary is mess to. The only players I am comfortable with on D is Bell, Starks, Langdon/Merling and Crowder but on the second ILB position, not the first.

I mean you would love for your middle LB's to be able to cover like that but in the 3-4 you need guys who are "thumpers"... Guys who can take on lineman, shed and punish ball carriers from tackle to tackle... That is their main priority... You would almost be wasting some of McClain's best attributes by putting him in the middle...

Nobody cares that Eric Berry and Dan Williams and others aren't even there? Why is this not being reported????????

Wait, wait, wait, wait a cotton pickin' minute.

This idea that Wilson was playing out of position is all wrong. Last year when the Dolphins signed him, they said he would play FS because that is where he played with the Giants when they won the Super Bowl.

He had played SS at Oakland and was so terrible, they cut him after only one year and even absorbed the cap hit to do it.

So if we're now going to say he was out of position at FS, then I would tell you he was terrible in Oakland as a SS.

By the way, SS is supposed to be a great tackler. Yeremiah Bell is a very good SS.

Is Wilson a great tackler?

Dolphins4life I'm sure you've seen me in here bitching at Mando for not going along with the plan and questioning the head guys too often. So believe me I'm with you on what ever is best for our team but I have also always stated I would give these guys 3 years until I start judging. Well judgement day is almost here and I just want to see some real growth and some great draft steals. This draft is ultra important to the future of this team and we are at a time when we can start holding the trifecta accountable for their decisions. Parcells came to this team very highly regarded so I would like to see some great results. With all of the hype surrounding him I would expect his drafts and FA signings to be better, not equal to other teams. Time to see some results and if we get them I will never question a word they say or don't say. I did not expect the team to have this many holes going into this season. One RB who is retiring and one who can't stay healthy, Our o-line has two starters who always get hurt and one guy who can't keep his weight down, TE,WR,NT,ILB,OLB,FS,DE (and that's something no one is talking about, exactly who is our dominating DE of the future?)Yikes, I know it's not all the trifectas doing but we have to turn a corner this season.

carlito i dont think there up for any physical testing/trials/training today i think the earliest is saturday

whats up guys anything good going on today>????

NJ, just because you played in a 3-4 your whole college career doesn't mean you are a perfect fit. He played well because he is a good LB but in the middle of a 4-3 with two defensive tackles taking up blockers and allowing him to roam freely would be the best fit in my opinion.

wilson is a horrible tackler excpet for that one good play he had against the jets that one was ok lol

Carlito, who is Eric Berry?

What exactly are you saying? You saw him at the gym? Where? When? Did you talk to him? What did he say?

Details, man. I want details!
