Ireland defends Wilson, suggests he's staying

Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland just finished speaking with the media and the most interesting thing from the talk, in my opinion, was his whole-hearted defense of Gibril Wilson and suggestion the free safety will remain with the Dolphins in 2010.

Ireland was asked if Wilson took too much of the blame for the troubles of the defense in 2009.

"He's playing a position with two young corners," Ireland said. "A lot of things you would try to blame on him ... those weren't always his fault. We have our evaluation of Gibril Wilson. We know what kind of player he's capable of being. I think he's going to be a very good player for the future. He was disappointed in his play last year.He will tell you that. I think he can play better. We'll just have to see. I think he will."

In talking to several reporters who attended the presser, including The Herald's Jeff Darlington, the clear indication they got is that the Dolphins intend to keep Wilson.

That even as the NFL is headed toward an uncapped year and cutting Wilson after March 5 would not cause any salary cap issues. Wilson signed a five-year, $27.5 million deal in 2009 that included a $5 million signing bonus and a total of $8 million in guarantees.

So what do you think?

By the way, the live blog of the NFL Combine continues in the comments section. See you there.

I am starting an E. Thomas chant as we speak!!!!!!!!

Russell Okung has 36 inch long arms. I am currently guarding my lunch out of fear he might reach for it.

And I'm in Miami and he's in Indy.

Posted by: Armando Salguero | February 25, 2010 at 02:46 PM

I guess I am glad I got my lunch ate already. I better watch it the next week though!! lol

this move makes sense. yes, he had a terrible year but the priorities right now are NT, OLB, ILB, WR, RG, & TE.

What middle ??? He 's a ilb in the 3-4.. How are you wasting his coverage ability attributes. did you see our ilb's , in the 3-4 system , coverage ability last year ??? one of the biggest responsibilties beside playing the run is coverage !!!. Like i said PERFECT !!

Mando, that was my exact arguement as to why Gibril was a good signing last year. Boy was that wrong. lol

Mando, if you were drafting for the Dolphins, and Brandon LaFell from LSU was still around at #12 in the 2nd round would you draft him? Better yet, if he we traded back with NE in the 1st and grabbed 1 of their 3 2nd round picks, would grab him at #22 and pick up Brandon Spikes in the 2nd? I'm just throwing out a hypothetical here, because if I were trading back in the 1st I'd be doing it to grab Dan Williams, but I think LaFell is going to be a #1 somewhere.

Armando,

I saw Eric Berry and Dan Williams amongst others at the gym this morning. They are working out in Delray Beach with a company called XPE sports. When I asked "Shouldn't you be in Indy?" Williams said "Yep, flight got canceled." End of conversation. Thats all the details I have.

Cuban, come on man, why make fun of people because of their names and the way they look. First it was the whole Henne neck fat thing and now you're making fun of someones name. You seem like a good guy that doesn't need to put people down about things that are out of their control. Make fun of the fact that Bush ran him over like a bulldozer but he really can't do anything about his name because I'm sure there is some family pride in it. And lay off my man Henne, that thick neck might win us a superbowl someday! :)

Carlito , there's a major snow storm. flights were cancelled. relax !!!

PaPhins are you on drugs???????????? You believe that the Pats would do anything to give us more draft picks??????

Lafell is a good idea though but we arent getting even a christmas card from the Pats you think they are giving us a second rounder???

Armando-

on the Pennington thing. Mia trys and wants to keep him lets say. what does that mean for the likes of White and or Thigpen, as i too believe Henne is the man. is the White pick a waste or for that matter the 4th round pick we gave for Tyler as well??

The NFL is a business. Inter-division teams have traded draft picks before. Remember when they gave us a 2nd round pick for Wes Welker? I try to suppress the memory too, but its happened before. And as i said, THEY HAVE 3 2nd ROUNDERS. They can afford to off-load one of them....

pa, I don't like Brandon Spikes. I think he's mostly all big-name but not great results. I HATE that he is really not very fast. Slow, in fact.

I don't like slow players. I think Miami's defense is too slow and needs to get faster and quicker.

By the way, McClain is slow also ... The talk in Indy is he might run a 4.68-4.7 at Indy.

NY, I almost forgot about the Fat-neck nickname...... Thanks, and by the way, I agree Chad(96inch neck)(lol)Henne is the best Q.B since Danny-boy....

let me explain. yes, he had a bad year. but he has potential to get better. The Dolphins need a NT to drastically improve the run defense and put pressure up the middle on the QB. Without a young, talented NT to anchor the defense, the 3-4 will crumble.

The Dolphins need a healthy playmaker at ILB to compliment Crowder and Akin. They need someone who can stuff the rush and force fumbles and bring more pressure up the middle playing along side a talented NT.

The Dolphins need a powerhouse OLB. JT is old and unsigned. Porter is gone. Cameron needs more experience under his belt. They need OLB who can put pressure on the QB and force turnovers.

You get playmakers at OLB. ILB, and NT, and you can have Armando at FS and do relatively well. FS can be a position addressed in the following year's draft.

I think we need a playmaking TE like Gates-quality over a WR. I think a star quality TE can revolutionize the offense in big ways.

WR is an issue but only a No 1. We have solid 2-5.

RG stands as our one weak point on the OL.

We also need a better KR/PR. Its a big weakness last year.

Pennington should not be back. Why waste a roster spot on someone who is coming off their third shoulder surgery when we have two guys that need the reps in practice and preseason.

by the way, Lafell has to run well at the combine.

He's run 4.6s in the past. That is not elite by any means. He must get to 4.5 or below to be a second rounder.

Well can I at least get some backing on us potentially trading back with the Patsies? Am i so delusional that there is NO CHANCE at this happening? I mean if your right, and the Dolphins don't like McClain either, would that make even more of a case for us trading back?

i agree WestVa on Pennington

by the way, keep in mind Jerry Rice ran a 4.5-4.6. Being a great WR is about hands, route running, and explosiveness. Speed isnt everything. I put Rice as my No 1 all time WR.

Cut girbil Wilson asap, go after rolle please!

NEWS:

Raheem Morris announces the Bucs will not try to re-sign Antonio Bryant.

"We need to move on," he said.

Armando,

Have you ever taken the wonderlic?

P.S. That sounds like something you have to pay extra for at a jiggle joint.

If Henne goes down then what, thigpen is decent but pat white can't play in a flag football league, the other Chad is a great player

Mclain running a 4.68- 4.7. at 6-4 258 pounds and being a ilb is SLOW ????? Are you kidding me ?? LOL !! Demeco ryans ran something similar if not slower and he's a pro bowl player at ilb.

we should sign Antonio. Give him a try. let's get a star TE in the draft. please. look at Celek in Philly or Dallas Clark in Indy.

Was Zach Thomas very fast?

Paphin there is more chance of snow at the season opener then the Pats giving us one of those picks. The gap between them and all the teams in the division has narrowed and they know that. The pats love those middle round picks. Thats how they have built the franchise they got. Telling you right now you will see pigs fly before that happens....

I'm saying his best attribute is not the #1 priority for a ILB in the 3-4. That's all. I saw a broken Akin Ayodele and a hobbling Crowder and a sorry Gerbil trying to cover backs and TEs yes... Some of it was scheme, some of it ability, some of it was because Joey Porter and Jason Taylor couldn't get to the QB. So pick your reason... I say go get the Pass rusher... Makes everybody's job easier. McClain in coverage is not going to help Gerbil Wilson in coverage... But a D. Morgan blitzing off the edge might.

Carlito, My girl friend took it and scored high on it, Unfortunately the reality is she should have scored lower... much lower....

Just say no Antonio

Mando Terrence Cody says he is down to 320. His weigh-in is must see TV

Danny,

This NFL might not be the same NFL as 20 years ago, but dude come on....when the Patriots went 18-1 they had one of the top 5 offenses in NFL HISTORY. They lost the Super Bowl to the Giants that year not because the Giants offense was better or even comparable to the Patriots but because their Defense was able to hold them to 14 points. That DEFENSE won them the championship. No matter how much the NFL changes, it is still FOOTBALL.

Jersey, everybody:

I think Ireland was being nice about Pennington. I don't think he'll be back. I don't KNOW that. Just a hunch. It's not a good idea unless you are worried about not keeping your job as a GM, VP. Then you want that insurance policy in case the starter goes down.

Parcells and Co. aren't worried about that.

Yes thigpen and white will be fine if Henne goes down. What then if tyler or pat is gone. Limp noodle arm pennington comes in and finds out his arm cant take a hit then we lost a back up because we would lose tyler or white and then we are down to just one of those two rather than both getting better together....

You think the Steelers beat the Cardinals becaue their offense was better!?!?!? Defense people, defense...

Yes MORE SPEED MORE SPEED MORE SPEED on Defense, and TE!!! We are too slow!

Hey Mando wasn't there something about Bryant that was a red flag for the phins? Did he fight with Nolan or something and do you think he's someone the tuna would be interested in? Is he a true #1 or a better complimentary wr that's a close #1. Man I can't wait for March to get here, this could be an exciting offseason for us.

Sorry looking at the town hall meeting on health care...

Armando

Point taken and be that as it may, Wilson still racked up 129 tackles with the Raiders, at strong saftey, so he can play that position.

Now what the Dolphins saw and what I thought I saw in him was that he would play in a scheme that would afford him to put up numbers similar to when he played with the NY Giants ( four years with the team, he started 51 of 52 games, recording 360 tackles, six sacks, and 11 interceptions) but had veteran CB's playing with him and a very, very good front seven...
Which brings me to my main point.

You asked if this worries me? NO

The front seven worries me, specifically the ILB's, OLB's and NT.

6'6' 260 Jimmy Graham was impressive in front of the media according to the Miami Dolphins on twitter. If Graham can learn to block and route run the kid is gonna be amazing

Thigpen is serviceable, I wouldn't mind him as a backup.

No to Antonio Bryant... just an awful idea.

I agree thigpen is a good backup, but Pat White? What was his completion % last year? I know he ran mostly but C'MON MAN!

The combine can be a real wakeup call when it comes to those official times. I wouldn't say McClain is slow but I would not be surprised if he runs a 4.8. Rarely he will have to run 40 yards anyway... But I will be the first to tell you that he ain't walking nobody down if he got to run that far anyway.

West va. Not sure what's more troubling a chad Penninton Noodle arm or a Human sacrafice that Pat (145LBS)White would become....

Mando i found the Sports Illustrated Scouting Report on Larry Fitzgerald.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2004/draft/players/46239.html

Now i understand, LaFell probably won't be that good. But if he can run close to a 4.55-4.6, he'll have my vote as the WR we should target at the top of round 2. Just watching the kid's highlights, he does all the things our receivers don't. Like make the big play catches, play BIG over the middle of the field, and make people whiff on tackles.

I know our WRs could use an upgrade, but the defense needs work first. If the D was good this year, we would have made the playoffs and likely have been 10-6 maybe even 11-5 with luck. Henne did well with what he had.

Poizen the guy threw 5 passes dont make yourself look stupid....

Now you said that they gave Henne no weapons, or help: What was Hartline? Bess the year before? Dont tell me they didnt give him any game changers either, did Brady and the Patsies have any game changers when they won the first couple of SB?...the anwser is no, no they didn't and it was a passing league then and now.

Id rather see white get his head taken off then have to suffer through that mundane offense that would be five yard outs and screens that Pennington would lead.

the last time i played organized football, i was taught that the FS was the last line of defense!! wilson played on the softest side in football last year, with SMITH(not phsyical at all) and PORTER(no run support or pass coverage at all)!! it is not hard to see why wilson struggled so much last year. if wison didnt have to worry about whether the CB would make a tackle or if the OLB would try to defend or cover a play then just maybe he could be the last line of defense, like most think he should be. most of you forget we were getting beat all over the field(strong and weak side). it didnt become apparent how bad wilson looked until bell, taylor and davis got more on the same page and teams would just take advantage of akin or flip the formation to the weak side. now on wilson's side who did porter ever cover(nobody) and smith granted played okay coverage but nobody trust him to tackle either. wilson had to many jobs to do to be the type of free safety we NEED. in order to fix this problem the dolphins need 3 starting LBs who can do a little bit of everything(cover, tackle and pressure the qb)!!! 2 OLB and 1 ILB is a must!!!your secondary cant lead the league in tackles when you run a 34 defense

Well Pozen is right, White is NOT good enough to be the backup QB.

i rather have benn or damien willaims i think ben could fall close to us 2nd round

Wasn't Cody 370? No way he lost 50 lbs in 30 days. The guy seems like he could be an impact player if he can control his weight.

Are the dolphins considering WEstbrook or LT?????

Westva, Are you part Mayan????

OK, sorry I stepped away I had password problems. Fixed.

The problem with Bryant is he had a falling out with Parcells and Nolan and had knee issues last year.

I wouldn't worry a TON about the falling out thing. Apparently everyone has kissed an made up.

The knee issue lingers.

Beerphin, why?

if we can sign bryant for cheap why not give him a try? we can focus on picking up a star TE, a solid RG, and fix the Defense
