Kiper: Dolphins will debate McClain and Bryant

ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper has the Dolphins picking Alabama inside linebacker Rolando McClain with their No. 12 overall pick of the first round in the upcoming draft.

But Kiper believes the Dolphins will have a healthy and perhaps heated discussion whether to go with McClain or Oklahoma State's Dez Bryant if the wide receiver is on the board when Miami selects.

"Dez Bryant, I think he'll be in the discussion, but you look at him and he could go higher," Kiper said today on a nationwide conference call. "I have him going at No. 10 to Denver still ... [The Dolphins] certainly need wide receiver help and you got to get it at some point and I think they will try get in this draft.

"But at that point, I think McClain would be the best option if Bryant's gone. And even if Bryant's there it's going to be a heck of a discussion, I would think, even if Bryant is still on the board."

Yeah, I could see that discussion going something like this:

Jeff Ireland: Bill, we've got a wide receiver and a linebacker on the board and ...

Bill Parcells: I'm Bill freakin' Parcells and I love linebackers.

Ireland: Linebacker it is.

Seriously, the Parcells penchant for drafting linebackers is well-known. And picking McClain, whom Kiper says has "a Ray Lewis-type enthusiasm and Bill Parcells will see that in McClain," seems logical.

"You look at Parcells when he was with the Giants and at other places, he loves linebackers that have that type of ability, especially guys with his kind of size too, with LT and Carl Banks and those type of guys," Kiper said. "This is an inside linebacker that looks like an outside linebacker."

And that is where Kiper and I disagree. I believe the Dolphins have a greater need at OLB than ILB. But Kiper doesn't see any OLB as worthy of the No. 12 selection.

I believe Michigan's Brandon Graham is more than worthy of that pick, talk of his short arms be damned. I love Graham! I have put in adoption papers for Graham because I want that guy in my family if he's not going to be on the Dolphins!

And here's the kicker, despite saying Graham rates around No. 20-32, Kiper also seems to love Graham.

"I've liked him all along, that's the one guy I've been consistent with all the way through," Kiper said. "He's got that great work ethic, he comes hard every play. He took advantage of some offensive tackles that were very suspect, obviously, and in the NFL that's not the case."

Kiper believes Graham will somehow wind up chasing Dolphins quarterbacks someday, either for a Miami division foe, or a team the Dolphins must eventually beat to become great.

"I actually have him going to New England in the latest projection I did from the standpoint of being a 3-4 outside backer," Kiper said. "As a 4-3 defensive end situational guy if Indianapolis looks at him in that rotation with [Dwight] Freeney and Robert Mathis it makes sense. I think his character and every game bringing it, the way he did production-wise is the reason why he's a pick to go now between 20 and 32."

I think that's precisely the reason the Dolphins should take him at No. 12. The kid brings it every play. Every single play. And he brings it with speed and explosion and good instinct and discipline.

Why isn't he rated higher?

Anyway, if the Dolphins decide to address their 3-4 OLB need later in the draft, Kiper has a handful of guys rated after the first round. They are:

Jerry Hughes of TCU, Ricky Sapp from Clemson, Antonio Coleman at Auburn, Cameron Sheffield at Troy, Eric Norwood at South Carolina. Kiper had Wisconsin's O'Brian Schofield rated as a first-rounder until he blew out his knee at the Senior Bowl in January.

I think if Bryant is still there at no. 12 and Parcells doesn't want to draft him, there's at least an OK possibility of getting a team to trade up to get him. I doubt it will happen but it certainly could happen. Think about what the Jets gave up to grab Sanchez!!

Have you ever heard of teams 'playing games' at this time of year? I'm not saying that the Dolphins don't like Dan Williams but do you think if they REALLY liked him they would be putting it out there. I'll say it again....'Williams at 12 would be a mistake'. Pat White in the second round last year was a mistake. We can't keep making mistakes and expect to get better. It's McClain or Bryant at 12 or a trade down. The reason you trade down is because there might be a team that needs an OL or CB (neither of which is an area of concern for us in the first round) and doesn't know if they will get that guy where they pick. I actually wouldn't be surprised to see us trade down. From all accounts this is a fairly deep draft and it would be nice to add another pick or two.

If JT stays that's all the more reason to go OLB with the first pick. You've got the consumate professional there with one year to mentor him. And JT isn't going to be worried about helping some kid who's going to be his replacement because he's probably not coming back in 2011 anyway. So that leaves WR as a glaring issue and since free agency looks bleak, who can we grab in the 2nd round that's going to make an impact in 2010?

Good points. I think the Pat White type pick happened 2 years sooner than expected. It should have been the last part of the rebuilding plan, just he was the guy the really thought could be a monster in the WildCat.

WestVaFins - So if you say no, who is replacing JT which was out best LB last year even if you say he wore down. A wore down JT was our best LB. You don't know who we are drafting, so who replaces him? Do you really want a bunch of unproven 22-23 year old LB's replacing a true veteran who can still play very well?? I am a fan of us because he is a great player and still is. I just don't see why we need to just let our best LB go with no one to replce him...

Craig Miller, you may think Williams is a reach, but you're not the one making the Dolphins Draft board. I'm going based on what's happened recently. Personally I don't care if they draft him or not. My point is they will fill a position of need with the best player available. They may think Williams is that player or they may not.

After a full summer of workouts in the Miami heat and preparing all offseason to come back and play you think he has enough left in the tank to play 16 games and hopefully some playoff games and during that time he will still be our best linebacker??? Do you down-traders think we should settle for a 1st pick swap and the up-trader's no.2, or shall we demand several picks lower than the 2d round in addition to their no.1?

I like the multiple pick option: their no. 1 plus their 3rd & 5th, & their 4th round next year. Seems fair to me.

Lets wait and see who drops to 12 before deciding if the pick has any trade down value. If someone THAT good drops and it's a defender, then the Dolphins would probably make the pick. If one of the QBs or OTs drop, then yeah it's possible to trade down.

He has been doing those Miami heat workouts for years, I think he is use to it and knows what to expect. Even if he said he was tired he still played harder then our younger LB's with the "tank" supposedly running out. Will he be the best next year you ask? I currently don't see a better LB on our team, so I would have to answer yes...

Until someone steps up and actually out plays him and becomes "better", then pay JT and play JT!!

I think we go after Wilfork and Dansby in FA, spend the $$ in an uncapped year and get either Bryant, or Graham in the 1st round.

WestVa - Do you really think any of our current LB's are better than JT? If they were they would of been in the game replacing him like Porter was getting replaced. Why was Porter getting replaced? Cause he wasn't better than the other guys...

I'm not so sure teams will give up soooooooo much just for the 12th pick!! Maybe if we throw in a player , but we don't have anyone with that type of value that we want to get rid of!

My take is the Dolphins will wait and see what happens in the draft before they decide to resign JT. They may end up picking an OLB with the first pick, in that case they prob won't bring him back, considering Cameron Wake will prob start next year. If they don't address the OLB position in the draft (or free agency, but who's available?) then I think they will sign him for 1 more year.

I still think we trade down, no chance that we take Bryant as we will probably get Boldin - they will grab a WR after the 2nd - I think McClain will be gone, either we trade down after or take Kindle or maybe Spiller. I don't think Spiller is a reach because he is a home run threat and can play ST's and 3rd down back. If we address FA and get a NT LB or WR (2 out of 3 wouldn't be bad) we should be able to take the best player available with our first 2 picks.

Kiper is saying the Dolphins have to go after a receiver at some point? Who are Devone Bess, Hartline and Turner? Didn't they also have some kid Brennan Marion on the roster until he got hurt in camp last year? Geez Kiper, I guess you're right.
If Crowder and Ayodele are so serviceable, why is that both safeties led the team in tackles? Last time someone adopted a player and his family, it got him fired. Just sayin'.
Take the best linebacker available, period. They all have to go, it's just a matter of who's first. Well except Wake. Oh yeah, and we can't cut Moses..........he may cause floods at sunlife stadium.

It's possible he may not last that long in FA. I'm not as well versed on the OLB/DE needs of other teams as I am on the Phins, so I could not say for sure. The Dolphins won't just sign him "just in case" though, I'm pretty sure of that. If they do sign him early, then you can be sure they are NOT targeting an OLB early in the draft. He's not a long term solution and if he does resign I'm sure it will be his last year as a Phin.

Again, anything is possible. If Bryant is there and all other defensive options are gone, then I think the Phins would look to trade down. The problem is, I don't think with his choice of agent, troubled past and injury history, that he'll be considered worthy of trading up for by any team.

Donte Stalworth signed with the Ravens....I guess they wont be going recevier in the draft or at least the first round

Indiana, thanks . i know i bust your chop and for what it's worth i agree with you on taylor comimg back even if they draft a olb. You can't lose both taylor and porter and bring back a rookie olb in the draft , Wake still isn't ready to be a everydown olb. They need taylor for 1 more year.

The issue here is not what we have, it's what we don't have. We don't have a #1 WR. We need one. We need someone that defenses will fear and role coverages to. This will open up the rest of the offense and keep teams from run blitzing us on just about every down. The Phins are still a ways away from addressing that position with a high draft pick in my opinion. Unless they trade for one (which I don't think they will give up picks for anyone). The Tuna is going to build up a championship defense and then plug in the outside positions on the offense last. At least this is the direction he's taken since he got here (with the Pat White debacle thrown in).

I believe this time folks are wrong when it comes to Dez Bryant. I think Parcells will break stride and grab him if he is at the 12 spot. And I am not particularly in love with the idea... I do think all things being equal... if Dez IS there at 12... he is the best talent to be had at that pick. I read one guy saying he had a "Bad feeling" about McClain... I am not sold on him either but would be certain that Bryant would be game ready come August. Williams is a keeper but is a low #1 high #2 at best. If we take Williams at 12 we will have made a draft boo boo. You simply MUST take the best player available when you have a chance...position be damned... unless it QB. Then you can pass if you need.

The jury seems to be split on McClain. Those that like him love him and those that don't. The nay sayers say things as strong as bust or wont be over average. I am included in that group. While bust is too strong for me to I think in terms of Channing Crowder or less and most are not jazzed about Crowder's work at ILB. Why would one ever want an average player at #12 when they had everyone in college football to choose from minus 11 other players?

NJ PHIN, boobbyd12, and quite a few others Love him. They say he is a wrecking ball dynamo of a player with insane triangle numbers. Smarts that transcend what any college player should have. He studies more than Peyton Manning and leads like Patton! (I kid, I kid but you get my point)

Like me, some don't see it. Todd McShay is in that group and has voiced concerns. Then when I said as much the answer was who is Todd McShay? Who is anyone in a talent evaluating guessing game? WestVaFins says he has a bad feeling and has heard some negative publicity but is not sure and that is more than fair.

I am one of the one's that has been talking smack about McClain for a while now. I have implored people to go to youtube and type in Universal Draft and make you own conclusions about McClain's 2 part series there. That's 15 minutes worth of college game footage. When I watch Direct TV NFL short cuts and they fit an entire game...every single snap in one 30 minute program. That's a 3 hours of a game shrunk down to 30 minutes when it's just snaps and no BS commentary and commercials. 15 mins of actual game snaps is a long time.

When I mention the vids or McShays comments to NJ PHIN or other McClain supporters I always hear a "I have followed his entire career and he is Superman in cleats" type answer or the "Hey you should never watch clips as they can make any player look bad." The latter can be true for sure. They should never be dismissed either as it is that player in game situations.

I am going by what my own eyes see... PERIOD! I see a guy that for all his herculean size/speed/strength numbers he can't even hit as hard as Rey Malaluaga that went in the second round last year. I think Brandon Spikes, while slower afoot, makes more plays and hits harder with much better tackling form. I see McClain as a run over and get in front of or a hop on the back of the ballcarrier tackler rather than bending at the waist and exploding through him. For all of his reported speed most of the time I am seeing him NOT using it to chase plays. He absolutely gets engulfed on blocks and can't shed and grab ball carriers. Many times he seems more concerned with wrestling with his blocker instead of playing off that person for the true goal in getting the ballcarrier on the ground. When I point it out I was told that when McClain blitzes it is part of the scheme that he doesn't actaully get the sack because he is creating the distraction for others to sack. That or he is still guarding the middle of the field vs screens, crossing routes and draws. I am not buying it.

I am VERY against a McClain choice. I don't want the Fins to make a choice a get a player that looks like Tarzan and plays like Jane. If I am wrong I am wrong and will admit as much later. I am not willing to have the Fins draft McClain to find out though.

The sad thing is he is still a popular choice by many fans, scouts and pundits. The logic to follow the masses therefore making McClain a great player simply doesn't jive with me. I am willing to own up if I am wrong and wonder if there will be shrinking violets if he ends up pedestrian or less in the NFL.

Go to youtube, type in Universal Draft and watch the 2 part series of McClain in action see if he is #12 material for yourself. You should walk away from any #12 choice say we should have an absolute game changer and I am not seeing that in McClain. Find me footage strung together of him dominating people, if he has fans that has to be somewhere...I'll watch it all.

I'm just one guy. Just one fan with one opinion. Everyone has theirs and some may be 180 from my own...no worries. I just hope the Trifecta see what I do and choose accordingly.

I disagree, this year will be uncapped they need to sign JT early even if they don't plan on keeping him they need to make sure he isn't a Patriot next year!!!

All of these .....well most of these comments are great suggestions but we won't be able to really see what the fins are targeting until free agency starts. The moves they make during this time will give us a little clearer picture of the draft!! Two signings could totally change the draft board!!! Think about it if we get Dansby and a miracle happens and we get Wilfork our first pick becomes somewhat expendable!!

Eric Berry should be the choice. Projection are that he will be available. He seals the middle of the field for years.

Derek in WPB - So you think we pick Bryant if he is there and then his agent tells him to hold out because he thinks he is "worth" more money for never playing an NFL game?? I would rather not risk getting a holdout. If we were guaranteed to be picking a WR I still would stay away from Bryant with the agent he chose.

I'm expressing an opinion on here just as you are and in my opinion Williams is a reach at 12. I also think Graham is a reach at 12. I was making the point earlier that previous regimes were notorious for making reach picks. You make enough of those reach picks and your organization begins to slide backwards. We have a number of good players on this team now. How are we going to improve the defence, and get ourselves a legitimate number one receiver? Those are the questions that need to be answered this off-season.

I had the displeasure of seeing the Wolverines every week this year.

Brandon Graham ate up some of the best O-lines in the nation. He ran down Terrell Pryor from behind. He blew up plays in the backfield, shedding double and triple teams.

BG has something that is not measureable on any chart - and that is pure wide open throttle drive. Bam Bam (Zach Thomas) had it, even though every one said he was too small, too slow, too white.

Give me a guy that has shown to make plays, despite the world falling around him, and never quitting 10x till Sunday. He's a football player, and one hell of an athelete. He showed it at the Senior Bowl, he showed it in his Michigan career, and will show it in the Pros. If he's there, you take him.

Datajack, I agree with your point on making coverages role to a speed receiver. By the way, I think they'll give Ginn another year. The reason being money and lack of an available replacement.(Hold the Bryant comments for now). Something tells me Hartline is going to draw coverage away from Ginn on occasion , which will leave Ginn with single coverage. That will leave it up to Henne to be able to see it. I'm not saying Ginn is the answer, as much as, he's going to get one more shot. It took Austin a few years to get it, and Parcells will be patient.

I would be shocked if they took Bryant, Given his history, injury and choice of agent. Is it possible? Of course! Like I told Craig Miller, none of us are building the Dolphin's draft board. They picked Pat White. So they may pick anyone. Now if you go based on needs, Parcell's draft history, both alltime and in the last 2 years with the Phins, then all indications are he's going to draft defense. He's only drafted one receiver in the first round before. And lets face it, as bad as we need a receiver, the defensive needs on this team are dire. I recorded every game this year and I've watched them all at least once. The defense was the major failure this year. Defense is key. Here's a little exercise for you, lets assume we had a great defense this year, which means we gave up an avg of 16 per game. Take all the scores last year and plug in 16 for the opponent. What is our record now? Let me help you. We'd be 12-4. How good is our offense looking now?

The problem with Hartline is he doesn't have the speed that would cause anyone to role coverages his way. You don't have to double cover Hartline if he can't out run his initial cover guy. Hartline is the kind of receiver that would excel in the slot. Reminds me of Welker. However, on the outside you need a big, strong receiver and a speed guy on the other side (ala Irvin and Harper). None of the receivers we have fill those needs. Ginn has the speed, but he has nothing else. He's a sprinter, not a football player.

NJ i actually saw how long it was scrolled to the bottom and looked and saw who posted it and already knew exactly what it said...

Dansby and A Rolle in free angecy and Graham at 12 and NT at 43 Defence would be set Boldin for a 3rd or with the 3rd WR Dezmon Briscoe
