Kiper: Dolphins will debate McClain and Bryant

ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper has the Dolphins picking Alabama inside linebacker Rolando McClain with their No. 12 overall pick of the first round in the upcoming draft.

But Kiper believes the Dolphins will have a healthy and perhaps heated discussion whether to go with McClain or Oklahoma State's Dez Bryant if the wide receiver is on the board when Miami selects.

"Dez Bryant, I think he'll be in the discussion, but you look at him and he could go higher," Kiper said today on a nationwide conference call. "I have him going at No. 10 to Denver still ... [The Dolphins] certainly need wide receiver help and you got to get it at some point and I think they will try get in this draft.

"But at that point, I think McClain would be the best option if Bryant's gone. And even if Bryant's there it's going to be a heck of a discussion, I would think, even if Bryant is still on the board."

Yeah, I could see that discussion going something like this:

Jeff Ireland: Bill, we've got a wide receiver and a linebacker on the board and ...

Bill Parcells: I'm Bill freakin' Parcells and I love linebackers.

Ireland: Linebacker it is.

Seriously, the Parcells penchant for drafting linebackers is well-known. And picking McClain, whom Kiper says has "a Ray Lewis-type enthusiasm and Bill Parcells will see that in McClain," seems logical.

"You look at Parcells when he was with the Giants and at other places, he loves linebackers that have that type of ability, especially guys with his kind of size too, with LT and Carl Banks and those type of guys," Kiper said. "This is an inside linebacker that looks like an outside linebacker."

And that is where Kiper and I disagree. I believe the Dolphins have a greater need at OLB than ILB. But Kiper doesn't see any OLB as worthy of the No. 12 selection.

I believe Michigan's Brandon Graham is more than worthy of that pick, talk of his short arms be damned. I love Graham! I have put in adoption papers for Graham because I want that guy in my family if he's not going to be on the Dolphins!

And here's the kicker, despite saying Graham rates around No. 20-32, Kiper also seems to love Graham.

"I've liked him all along, that's the one guy I've been consistent with all the way through," Kiper said. "He's got that great work ethic, he comes hard every play. He took advantage of some offensive tackles that were very suspect, obviously, and in the NFL that's not the case."

Kiper believes Graham will somehow wind up chasing Dolphins quarterbacks someday, either for a Miami division foe, or a team the Dolphins must eventually beat to become great.

"I actually have him going to New England in the latest projection I did from the standpoint of being a 3-4 outside backer," Kiper said. "As a 4-3 defensive end situational guy if Indianapolis looks at him in that rotation with [Dwight] Freeney and Robert Mathis it makes sense. I think his character and every game bringing it, the way he did production-wise is the reason why he's a pick to go now between 20 and 32."

I think that's precisely the reason the Dolphins should take him at No. 12. The kid brings it every play. Every single play. And he brings it with speed and explosion and good instinct and discipline.

Why isn't he rated higher?

Anyway, if the Dolphins decide to address their 3-4 OLB need later in the draft, Kiper has a handful of guys rated after the first round. They are:

Jerry Hughes of TCU, Ricky Sapp from Clemson, Antonio Coleman at Auburn, Cameron Sheffield at Troy, Eric Norwood at South Carolina. Kiper had Wisconsin's O'Brian Schofield rated as a first-rounder until he blew out his knee at the Senior Bowl in January.

Rob in oc . you're all caught up on the dolphin threads HUH ??? what happened to the response to my post and where's the video of B graham blowing up and blowing past bryan baluga at the SENIOR BOWL ??? You know , the one where baluga wasn't even at the senior bowl because he was a junior who declared for the draft. LOL !! Is this the same scouting and video skills that have you analyzing mcclain ??. id so , i wonder about you . cheers

No one has really given you solid reasoning as to why the Fins shouldn't choose Graham @12.

He has a shorter arms (wins the battle anyways so far) and lacks some height, not rated as high by some "experts"?? Pfft, they have to be better reasons that that to argue with such great game tape and production.

On a side note, it may take a long time for the state to recognize the adoption...those things take time, LOL

Rob in oc, I just saw your post. that's better. all in good fun and cheers to you.

Guys, if you're following me on twitter, you now know the Arizona Cardinals will not franchise Karlos Dansby ...

Discuss ...

And why the heck ain't you following me on twitter?

LMAO @ mark regarding the leafs. i had to throw that at you after you got a little excited about the phaneuf trade.

Funny, Rob! Very funny!

If the papers don't go through, I may just throw myself on the mercy of the court and plead to at least bring the dude coffee every morning while he collects sack after sack after sack in the NFL.

I do no understand why people refuse to believe their eyes. But watch his stock rise at the combine. I guarantee it!

Marcus and Mark in Toronto,

Why would any team want to change Morgan from doing what he has already been doing at a super high level in college?

I thought the projections were for when you had to make a great football player adapt to something else due to a lack of size or ability to man a certain position? Mrogan is one of if not the highest rated DE coming out right? He also has the size to flop to DT in certain fronts...why make him an OLB?

Marcus , that's the question on mitchell and why he;s a mid round prospect. CONSISTENCY !!!

Mando . we talked about dansby to exhaustion on your dansby blog the other day. where have you been ??? OK Guys i'm out.

Armando... Back at ya! My hardest blog laugh thus far!! Good form, good form.

On the Twitter following... I am sorry i am just not a twitter'er type guy. I have a wife that twitter's and I will have her sign up for your account.

I have a bunch of friends and relatives that try to get me to twitter & facebook... with my fingers..how would I ever sleep?? lol

Ok, Fins Football Game face back on!

No problem NJ PHIN, I knew you hadn't noticed my "apology" post yet.

Mando are you still full go on picking up FA Dansby?

I agree with some that it may end up being the Trifecta trying to mindful of the un-cap later on or just protecting the Ross purse strings that disuades grabbing him.

I think he would vastly improve the Fins Def all around though.

Rob, almost 95% of the OLBs people rave about in 3-4 systems were DE's in college. i don;t get your point. And putting his at DT is laughable. Why would you put someone that good in space with his athletic ability in a phone booth??? I don't get you at all on this one, man. It's not like he's a 285 lbs DE, he's 265-270 - easily covertable to a OLB. Woodley is 265 on 2 fewer inches, want to put him at DT in a 4-3 too?

Sign Dansby as soon as they are able (within reason - anything more than $8-$9 Million a year would be much but it's not my money).

Mando, I've been saying for months that the Cards wouldn't franchise Dansby. I believe it was even agreed to as early as last year just to get him to take the franshise tender.

you guys have no jobs , all of you 24/7.

And NJ, I think you liked the Phaneuf trade more than I did. I thought the last thing they needed was another D man. However, I do like the Gigeure trade. Their goaltending was awful

Rob, nobody would keep Morgan from doing what he does best... Rush the passer and stop the run. He will just do it standing up.

I agree with you for a change Armando if both are gone Graham would be a great consolation prize. I'm a Dolphins fan and a Wolverine fan so I have watched Graham excel the past 2 seasons. He is very strong against the run and is very disruptive getting in the backfield. He led the nation in tackles for loss on a horrible Michigan defense. He reminds me a lot of another Wolverine DE turned 3-4 OLB in Lamar Woodley playing great for the Steelers. I see the similarities. I would't argue if Miami went that route on draft day. Although honestly I would rather have McClain.

NJ, was it all on him though? I am not aware of the USF offense... Do they throw alot? How was the QB play?

And Mando... The dude on twitter... He was talking about undersized pass rushers... When did a 260 lbs linebacker become undersized?

Mark in Toronto,

I think the idea of Morgan bulking up a tad and being like a Merling type DE that sometimes flops to DT in some pass rush fronts is not out of the question at all??

At 6-4 and 275lbs don't you think he can add 10-15 pounds as a young guy coming out of college just as readily as dropping weight for OLB?

I am saying that he makes a Great DE with no size deficiency, why should he be pushed to OLB?

The reason they say it with DE Brandon Graham is due directly to his somewhat tweener size.

Sup ALoco,

I would say it's a mixture of business owners, some retired and with the economy being as it is...many out of work.

Cheers mate,

TAKE AARON HERNANDEZ TE FLORIDA!!!!!!!!! He is going to be great!!!!!!!

After reading all the pros and cons on the # 12 draft pick, I have concluded that I'm sticking with the "Tuna" to make the best call available on just who will be drafted to best fill a Dolphin need!

OK guys the Cuban has arrived, What's new in Finville????

Awww Victor Barney.... not even venturing a guess?

OK we been debating this all day! I want to throw an idea out here and would like to hear what you guys think.

I just read the Chargers are trying to trade their corner A.Cormartie. I think the phins should entertain this. Why? Because I for one think our CB S.Smith is better suited to be a FS. Not only would this trade fill a need , by allowing S.Smith to move to FS. The Phins could look at trading down in the draft with the Chargers and possibly get more picks. Whatcha think???

Damn, I spent so much time catching up on all the various posts that the NJ PHIN ship has sailed.

bobbyd12... you out there? Let me have the links that reveal the crazy talent that McClain has because all the ones I have found aren't seeling me, they are turning me away.

NJ Fin Fan, god D*MN I am tired of hearing you all over every blog! You think you know everything, but I have heard you say so many rediculous, assinine things I couldnt even begin to keep track. Quit talking to everyone like you are some freakin expert, and go back to Newark, where I'm sure you live... Or have some respect for what other Dolphin fans have to say (most of them are just as knowledgable as you!)

Sup Cuban,

I have sworn off (as much as I can) the long posts...that's new.

With the Fins there won't be new items until FA starts and the draft happens.

We hash out all the various options like good lil soldier Fin Fans tho... lol

Rob, Like the Staten Island ferry the NJ cruise ship will be docking in about a hour, so sit tight.....CHEERS...

One reason not to pick McClain at #12 is because we can make a run at Carlos Dansby, who obviously would love to play for us.. there is noone decent at the WR position in Free Agency, so if we could land Dansby, we could use that #12 pick to fill one of our other needs (WR or NT?), and kill 2 birds while only using 1 pick. Thoughts?

j. dizzle,

That's a pretty big talent changing hands. I would say the cost in player(s) and draft picks would be too high.

Do I think he would make our Def better absolutely... I have a feeling the price would turn your stomach.

mando your an idiot, olb more pressing than ilb? wake will be the dumerville in nolans scheme, and mcclain is a FRANCHISE player , a difference maker who can call the plays defensively putting everyone on the feild in a position to do better. why not put will allen at free safety?

Rob in OC

I disagree only because our first pick is worth more than theirs!!! I think they've already fell in love with a draftee and is trying secretly to move up! But then at the same time you may be right, because the report didn't say what they wanted in return. Still I think its worth an inquiry from the Tuna and his helpers!

10-4 cuban,

I will try to hang on but, the lil lady gets restless too.

What are your comments about this blog in particular cuban?

PS. Don't scroll back or your head will explode at a couple of my posts...too long...by my own admission (Damn that's long)

Rob, It's OK i brought a 12 pack home and have plenty of time to read since it's freezing outside and Ive been in that muck since 7 this morning, So post some Novels if you must my friend.....

Right on j. dizzle,

The Fins Brass is busy pursuing every possible lead at this juncture. Maybe with that huge value diffential that could be a way for us to trade back and we would get a player in Cromaratie instead of extra draft picks for trading back.

Could be more viable than I first thought. I would wait to see what they are wanting. To flop picks and get Cromartie may be very intriging.

Just hypothetically I wonder whom they would move to FS between Sean Smith, Cromartie or Vontae Davis? They would have to believe one of those guys could play there for it to make sense I would think.

Thoughts ? , Carlos dansby ??? thought are you are a jackazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz !!!!

Lol cuban... you already have some War and Peace's to read bud. ;)

Cheers and enjoy your frosty cold brews...you earned em it sounds like.

Another rugged cloudless 78 degree day here in OC.

you guys have no jobs ?

Rob in OC

If you have to move one it has to be S.Smith with his size he is perfect fit! But only the coaches would know if mentally he could make the switch!! On my John Madden 10 , he made the switch just fine!!! LMAO!!!!! But seriously I think this would help make FS not such a pressing need.

Have a Job I don't want....

Rob in OC,

Can’t wait for the combine.

Mortgage... phones are slow sometimes.

I amy change companies and then it would be blog every Haley's Comet. =)

I have to say you bring some good nature to this blog. Thanks.

Bring on the combine.

Aloco, You know my Job....(Mall cop) LMAO...

j. dizzle,

The only thing about Sean Smith going back to FS is his tackling ability needs to come up. You ahve to be able to tackle as a FS and he would be our last line of defense. We only had half of our safties tackling worth a damn last year... I'm not naming any names, haha.

I think Sean Smith's ballhawking corner skills would serve the postion well. I am just not sure he could/would stick his head in there aggressively enough.

Lotta question marks there. I would just prefer to take the draft picks if we get a trade partner to go back in the 1st.

the chances of this happening this offseason is like 5% but amagin we sign wilfork to fix the dt problem we sign dansby olb problem trade for boldin wr probblem and draft bryant have a power house offence or draft mclain or even trade down get a free pick to trade 4 boldin and draft graham or that saftey jones or who ever what an dream offseason/draft that would be

Thanks Po Brother! I appreciate the compliment man.

Rob you can say it... Gibril(Why did you name me this Mom??) Wilson......

I’m curious to see what they do with Jason Allen this year.

eric what ??????

Chargers shopping cromartie.Phins are you listening?

Give yourself some credit to ALoco. lol
