The behind-the-scenes Dolphins soap opera

Like the sands through the hour glass these are the last days of Joey Porter's Dolphins career.

The countdown clock is winding to Porter's certain release from the Miami Dolphins. If that isn't clear to you by now after it's been written on this blog time and again, then you certainly must be getting the drift as Porter continues to slime the team in radio and television interviews the past three weeks.

I must say the best of those interviews came Tuesday and was done by the fine folks over at 560-AM (WQAM in Miami). It was the best because Channing Crowder, paid by the station, convinced Porter to come on for nearly 15 minutes and simply unload.

And by the time the segment was over, Porter had pulled back the curtain on exactly how dysfunctional the Dolphins really were in 2009. As he and Crowder talked you understood players don't really love coach Tony Sparano. You understood how Sparano's penchant for putting a happy face on everything is truly just propaganda. And you recognized how utterly, undeniably delusional Porter really is.

At one point in the interview, Porter actually let these divergent thoughts stream from his mouth as if they could ever belong together: "I got no problem being here," he said. "I think we're headed in the right direction. But I can honestly say I don't want to be back."

Anyway, forget the stuff about Porter being unhappy with being platooned. I've covered that in previous posts. Porter wasn't happy with that at all. But the guy has no grasp on the fact he was authoring a terrible season much of the year when Sparano instilled the platoon system. He doesn't recognize that Cameron Wake was increasingly looking like a sack waiting to happen every time he came in the game.

And Porter apparently doesn't recognize Jason Taylor was simply a more complete player -- defending the run and the pass as well as rushing the passer.

Porter? Regardless of what Sparano wanted you to believe, the next time Porter set the edge of the defense would have been the first time he did that.

And yet Porter apparently sees himself as vastly superior to his teammates.

"If you let us fight for the job, it's not even an argument," he said. "No shots at nobody (really?), but it's not even an argument. All them guys in my room, love them to death, but the outside linebackers, I'm the best one we got. Period. There's nothing to talk about. That's period. Who am I switching with? Why should I be switching with any of them guys."

Later in the interview Porter showed the disdain for which he held the guy about to replace him.

"If you want to play Cameron Wake and them in the game, go ahead," Porter said. "Good luck to you."

I told you yesterday Porter really only had one advocate at Dolphins camp and that was Tony Sparano. And then I told you he had lost Sparano. Apparently the relations went sour well before the end of the season.

"Last seven weeks of the season after missing the Tampa Bay game was no fun for me ...," Porter said. "Going in and being a captain, I went from talking to the coach every day to not talking to the coach no more. Only time I talked to him was on game day. Not talking to nobody. Seeing Jeff Ireland and Bill Parcells and them and nobody saying nothing to you no more. It made me feel like an outcast. The writing's on the wall for me."

Porter was apparently hurt that Sparano lost trust in him and cast him aside like a three-button jacket. And he apparently was somewhat envious that Sparano continued to see Taylor as the team's leader.

"I'm your captain but I'm not in no meetings no more," Porter complained. "Nobody's talking to the captain no more.We lost [Jason] Ferguson. We lost Chad Pennington. We had four. We lost two to injury. So now it's just me and Jason, but Jason't the only one that's meeting with the head coach.

"And he's relaying a message to me: 'Yeah, coach said this because he said you don't want to talk.' Why I don't want to talk? Usually when we call a meeting, you say, 'Joey, Jason come up.' Not just, 'Jason come up.' So everybody don't know everything I went through. That last seven weeks was no fun for me."

BLOG PAUSE HERE. ALTOGETHER FOR JOEY: Aaaahhhh. Joey wasn't having the proper amount of fun as he was making about $5 million last year. Three million people lost their jobs in 2009 but Joey wasn't loving life every second he lived it. Makes me really sad.

Anyway, as I reported to you on January 26th, one of the things that got Porter truly torqued off at Sparano was his suspension for the Tampa Bay game.

And in talking about that episode Porter and Crowder painted the picture of a team on which players don't agree with the head coach and assistants aren't agreeing with the head coach about a player's suspension -- one Sparano was absolutely correct about, by the way.

Team unity was apparently not so united.

"It was an uncomfortable situation amongst the team," Crowder said. "And I know I'm not the only player that thinks that. I know a lot of the guys were too."

Said Porter: "I put it this way, it wasn't a situation to where when [Sparano] sent me home, everybody was on board with that decision. Coaches and players. I got phone calls from coaches telling me, 'Just keep your head up. Fight through it, man. You'll be alright.' Now why you telling me this? 'Cause you know in your heart the deal was just wrong. It was just wrong."

Porter claims he was suspended because after missing two days of practice Wednesday and Thursday, he left his crib Friday night to get dinner. "I went out to get something to eat from 9 to 10:30," he said.

The Dolphins have a different version although they continue to hide behind their veil of silence that frankly has become sort of transparent now. The team believes Porter abused the privilege of being off Wednesday and Thursday by going out Friday night.

"[Sparano] wasn't happy about that, and I've never heard of that before," Porter said. "You know what I mean? Telling a grown man what to do on a Friday. It wasn't Saturday night curfew. I'm talking to him, looking at him and I'm like, "I'm not in here leaking alcohol, getting in the steam room trying to get it out of me. I'm here bright eyed and bushy tailed.' I went to sleep at 10:30. That's good for me. That's great for me."

"Amazing," Crowder chimed in agreement.

Amazing indeed. But not for the reasons these two think.

Is this porter shyt ever going to end ???

Frankly, Crowder can hit the road as well. The next time rodwer makes a big play will be the first. The two biggest mouths on the team and neither of them delivered anything other then words.

Idiots...Drop them both.

Well, in addition to Porter, why don't we also usher out Channing, as well? Instead, we could certainly bring in and sign Carol Channing in his stead. At least she is one Channing that can scratch her ass without going on the injury list. These two knuckleheads, Porter and Crowder, bring little, or nothing, to a team with hopes of aspiring to reach playoff status. Show Porter the door, and trade Crowder.

It's so sad that Mueller + Cameron wouldn't pay Welker an extra $800,000 to stay and then they went out and signed this wind bag for an obscene amount of money.

I agree with Rick, I'd like to see Crowder gone, too. Unfortunately, there's just too many holes to fill right now.

joey porter is acting like a 10 year old little girl not the "grown man" he thinks he is. what a punk. he waits until super bowl week when every media outlet in the world is in town to make any of these proclamations. its all about publicity with this washed up loser. what team would want this guy? no wonder pitt. got rid of him. they didn't want him around their rookie coach, hijacking the locker room and turning into a kindergarten soap opera. nice nickname peezy you pus?y

Hate to say it, but, sounds like Porter did get a raw deal, and that would make for an uncomfortable situation. He went to eat? BFD! Crowder calling him on, and agreeing shows that, as you said, the team is NOT buying the coaches double-talking crap. I don't buy it either. I don't know why you're belittling his statements. If you could go out there and make 9 sacks in a year you too could make $5 million dollars. That doesn't mean he, or any grown man should be treated like children, or shunned by managment. That wouldn't be fun. Stop showing your envy.

Crowder is stupid to get involved in this rubbish...he a middle line backer who is exactly that ...MIDDLE...of the road...he is not a play maker and is NOT outstanding....both he and Porter are replaceable....

We now know that OLB and MLB will be draft choices this year.....maybe Crowder has some draft cache..??....

Also what this tells me is that Sparano and co are not 100% in control and they better get in control....Ive loved the Trifecta so far except for a few crappy draft and FA decisions and Sparano acting like a CLOWN on the sidelines during games...

they need to CLEAN HOUSE again...FFS...!!!!

Kudos to Sparano for not letting the bigger money vet (Porter) dictate how his decisions came down towards the end of the season, the last 7 games in fact.
If Porter was producing to his dollar value then he would never be suspended or platooned during games.
Face the facts Peezy, you don't bring enough to the table anymore, so yes, you will be gone.
Look and learn Channing, your next. Put Up or Shut Up!

This staff's ego will cause this team for the unforseen future. They originally shunned Taylor, then Roth, now Porter. I imagine Murphy too, not that he was a stud. Just because you're a blowhard that can yell doesn't mean you're a good coach. Being a leader means finding out how to motivate or manipulate INDIVIDUALS. The same method does not work across the board, and from what I've seen Tony just yells.

i have two words for joey porter: sebastian vollmer. hahahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahha. way to get thrown around like a rag doll by a rookie making his first start after running your mouth all week. bye bye joey. nice leadership. and you wonder why sparano didn't treat you like a captain? grow up man...

How about bills qb Ryan Fitzpatrick racing down the sideline where joey porter was supposed to be setting the edge for a 35 yd TD ???? LMFAO !!! One more thing , if you were hurt enough to miss 2 days of practice then your hurt enough to go OUT !!! ORDER F'N TAKEOUT IF YOUR HUNGRY !!! Get this SHYT outta here !!!

Jersey, practice is the same as going to sit down and have dinner? Come on man!

Isn't it about time you guys argue about draft picks where you will all be wrong, and talk about getting 2 of the best Free agent WR's in the game?

Dez Bryant, Marshall, Jackson...I will bet my condo that none of them will be wearing a fins jersey next year...Goes without saying

LOL @ MARC. Really ?? Give me a break . if your sooo hurt and you can't practice then you shouldn't be out having dinner at f'n 10:30 at night when you should be resting for the game in a day and half. By the way , if you've reading this blog , you would know i've arguing that miami won't get any of those WR's if FA or the draft. Nice hearing from you and thanks for stopping by :)

Na na na na hey hey goodbye!

the ironic thing about this whole soap opera, is that during the team's collapse down the stretch the rookies and young players working their way into the rotation held up their end of the bargain! it was the veterans and so called leaders and "playmakers" that disappeared and fell apart. hartline, bess, garner, hilliard, wake, vontae, sean smith etc. all played their hearts out the last month of the year. porter moped around and did nothing. ayodele, wilson, crowder taylor etc. were non existant. get rid of these washed up bums and bring in more kids that want to be here.

There is a reason why the steelers got rid of Joey. Now we know!

crowder should go as well

Crowder and Porter are gone they've known it for a while and now and want to make it look like they want out to save face they both su*ked this year and are talk frackin sh*t now what can we do to frack with them some more let's not make life that easy for people that can't keep there mouth shut!

Marc , we heard you got into an encounter with Eric green. Everything OK ??? Is your butt a little sore ???

it's Crazy how every one loved J-Peezy last year 17.5 sacks. Now every one hates him. Lets just say thanks for every thing and peace out bro.

Forget the Crowder should go or Crowder isn't producing, etc.

Straight up how is the team going to deal with him getting involved with this on the air?

They have written off Porter so while they don't like that he's out there spewing junk, they can't be shocked.

But for Crowder to be involved on the radio? Can you imagine Parcells, Ireland, and Sparano's next convro with him?

What's going to happen?

1030 at night is a little late for dinner. Why couldnt he go at 8, or even 9? Why did he have to go around party time?

If Porter didnt want rotated, then he should have produced. Getting sacks against backups isnt especially hard to pull off for one of the all decade guys,is it?? He also got his 17 sacks against the easiest schedule in football.

For 5 million a year he gets to play his favorite game and spend half the year going to the gym for a couple hrs a day. Is that really so hard? If he was such a standup player, would Pitt have released him in his prime?

Trade him to Cleveland! Maybe KC.

BTW, I don't think the Phins owe the press an explanation.

Crowder is an idiot for getting on Joey's band wagon... When its said and done, Joey will be trying to get on the field in another city and Crowder will be stuck in Miami overrunning plays and never being in position... Both of them know this draft is all about new Linebackers... they want out before they get embarrassed by young men wanting to play and win... See Ya peezy... take Crowder with ya and hit the door....

If sacks and tackles could be made by running one's mouth. Then maybe we would have two linebackers in the pro-bowl, unfortunately the performance of Shouting Crowder and Joey Porthole did not even get them invited to the pro-bowl to keep the bench warm. I think all teams need a few players with some character and a bit swagger, but if they don't produce on the field then they are no better than Fatty Ryan running his greasy chops. Crowders is a good linebacker but far from great, Porter has one maybe two more years in him. The best thing the Dolphins could do is get rid of both of them. And will we are sh@t canning people add Teddy Bear Soft Ginn to that list.

I hope Crowder has his bags packed as well.I mean how stupid can you be ?Agreeing with that other dummie on live radio.Send both of their butts to play for uncle Al Davis.Crowder when you are a marginal and i do mean marginal player and you take the wrong side in this.See you later dude!!!

Common trade them BOTH to Detroit for just one 2nd round pick. Hell I would take a 3rd. Send them both to the cellar loving Lions and you won't have to deal with them anymore.

hey, Marc are you really joey you sure sound like you could be you are crying just like, come on joey we know its you.

when can we start trading players. or in joeys case slacker.

I wonder what Parcells is going to do with both of them. Don't piss off the Tuna.

I really hate double negatives. Why can't people talk properly anymore.

What's up NJ...Its been a while ha

I can't stand Joey Porter...this Guy is starting to be a real cancer to our team. He's even got Crowder going in the wrong direction.I think Miami has to let every player go that just won't buy into the system. It makes me worried that some players really don't like coach Sparano. If a majority of the team doesn't believe in the head coach...Our Dolphins have a lot more problems then we all thought.I actually like Coach Sparano...He's a good coach.

The best part of Crowder joining this nonsensical tour of disillusionment is that while yes the trifecta signed him to a nice contract they did so with the knowledge that his ass could be cut if he didn't perform. Well Channing, hurt a second yr in a row and now your talking trash about the org that signed you when you've never done anything. WOW...Goodbye Joey Goodbye Channing....I would love to see a REAL INSIDE LB be signed and I believe thats just what Bill and co will do. Would love to see DeMeco Ryans signed!!!

Joey, It looks like the writings on the wall for you..Unfortunately Joey(DUHHH) Porter cant read........also take your boy toy Crowder with you....Enjoy Detroit.....

This situation is childish. When you make the type of money these guys make, crying and whining should not be allowed. This is all about the win, loss record this past season. If we were 11-5, this is not an issue. When Joey was sacking everything that moved in 2008, nobody complained. He was hurt most of this season and you could tell. However, dude still lead the team in sacks. I would rid myself of Crowder however, he has not lead the team in anything.

Now we know why the Dolphins played so poorly and lost their last 3 games. Their locker room was divided and there was no real trust in Sparano. I said it during the season and I'll say it again, he is not HC material. Sparano made a lot of strange decisions during games, from clock management to play calling to personnel management and it was very obvious.
Now, what's starting to surface is that he's trying to run his team like a dictator and that will not work. Say what you want about Porter, and he might not be the most tactful guy, but he can still play. That's evidenced by his team-leading 9 sacks. Having said that, I think that Sparano acts this way because he feels that he's being watched by Parcells. This is not acceptable for a HC; you have to have your own personality and not walk in anyone's shadow.
I think that the current situation is getting worse. The players have clearly not bought into Sparano's system and they don't have the confidence in him. I don't see him lasting beyond this year, and deservingly so.

Porter wasn't special this year and is on the decline. Crowder will never be half of what Zach was. Send 'em both to New England and let them talk a lot of smack cause we all know they can't back it up on game day and watch them drag that team down...

Cut em both

You people blaming the coach for disciplining a player for breaking team rules is hilarious. Also Porter refused to come off the field when told to do so. This guy is not a team player. Sporano is the best HC this team has had since Shula. I will rely more on the the trifecta than a loud mouthed player that's butt-hurt because he can't stand being rotated. Good riddance! The guy cannot stop the run and cannot cover a screen pass to save his life. He is not worth the money the Phins are paying him and I really hope Parcells sends him to a team like the Lions.

I agree Crowder is a sh-t stirrer. Why would you bring out stuff like that. Hasn't he heard of never airing your dirty laundry?

I said all year long crowder sucks and is a cancer. Joey is Joey cut both of them and start fresh the only two that aren't buying into the coaches system is them, they both talk a lot of trash and not one of them can back it up send them both packing they suck. Who is the moroon that gave crowder a talk show on the radio but then again that might have been a good choice because that's all that boy can do is TALK.

After reading this my attitude has totaly changed about the both of them. Joey, I'm sorry you were treated this way you have evry right to be upset and it's a good thing you have Channing there for support. We're all with you and hoping you get through this allright.

Give me a break and get out of here allready!

Let me caution Sparano as well. This will be year 3 of his project. He has to make the playoffs, nothing less. Players will stop listening as they see your strategy fall apart. Starting the season 0-3, 0-4 is not acceptable. With or without Joey, Sparano needs to win. Players don't like to see other players mistreated or used improperly. Sparano's message better be backed up with victories.

FB, I agree!!!!

I gotta admit that Crowder's comments have made me think Sporano has "lost" the team.

This is a NEW concern arising from this situation, and it's bumming me out.

The Porter stuff is played out for me; the only problem is he's ruined even the minimal trade value he had - - this might have been intentional on his part, since being cut would make him a total free agent ,even tho he loses the cushion of a good exisiting contract. In an uncapped year, it only takes one stoopid team to pay you what you want.

Get rid of them both. Neither one has made a play since they got here. They won't be missed.

Who the F is Channing Crowder?

Crowder??? who the hell is he?? whens has he made a big play??? anyways, glad its not my money they wasted on him

Get rid of these two malcontent losers. Porter is past his prime, Crowder is just average. Both can be replaced! Wake looks like the real deal and midle linebackers like Crowder are a dime a dozen. Too bad we did'nt take Patrick Willis when Cam picked Ginn, ouch. We need a play maker inside, although our run defense suffered when Channing went down he is far from spectacular. Say what you want about the Dolphins management, their means justify the end relults. They want to WIN, thats all. Players who don't buy in will be sent packing!

I have had my concerns about Sparano as a head coach from the beginning. It is and has been my impression that of all the assistant coaches the "Tuna" has ever promoted to head coach, Sparano is the worst head coach of the lot! I do not think the he is respected by his players and I'm just afraid the Parcels had gotten carried away with his Italian thing (mob). I hope that i'm wrong, but I don't think so?

This sucks, if sparano was hired just ONE year earlier, we would of never had this headache. They would of never signed that bum, and crowder would not have been such an easily lead automaton.

Best line so far...

'The next time crowder makes a big play will be the first time"

I have been a Porter supporter to this point but...he is making it hard MAN. Damn!

Tuna is blowning off Peezzy the Clown?? he's done!!!!!!

Well this explains the crummy end to the season. I truly believe the lack of unity thing. I am very concerned about this staff!! or put another way. we wont see the playoffs anytime soon... I still love my phins but this is getting sooo old...

I'll save my comments for porter after i think about this more...As for Crowder WTF???!!!

Does he really think he has earned the right critisize this orginization that for some unkown reason has shown him love. I can't rember the last time hed had a tackle for a loss, or we went a game with out watching him trail a TE for a 50 yard play on us.

He has chosen his path...he should be dealt with and dealt with serverly. Would our team realy be worse off without this malcontent crowder? I don't think so.

I also hear these reports that he is some major leauge trash talker but i didn't believe it because he doesn't do anything that warrants talking trash

I'm not a Porter fan/hater or a Crowder fan/hater, I'm just a Dolphins fan. I want what's best for the Miami Dolphins. I thought a couple of years ago, Joey was pretty good for this team. I agree he took a step backwards this year (could be due to some lingering injuries). But one thing he said on the radio really upsets me. Football is a team sport, and Joey just totally dissed the rest of the linebacker core on his team. To say "all the guys in my room, love them to death, but I'm the best we got. Period" Just plain disgusting. That's the stuff Coach Mike Singletary (SF 49'ers) was talking about getting rid of to improve his team. That's what the Dolpins need to get rid of to improve their team. If those 53 players don't see how each plays an integral role in the success/failure of their team, then they'll never become a SuperBowl caliber team.

On another note, I only know Tony Sparano from interviews and what I see on tv (and what Mando says on this blog). All in all, I thought he was a pretty good coach, and an overall good guy. He doesn't put his players out there, airing their dirty laundry. He seems like a good motivator and a hard-working guy. He's IMPROVED this team from where they were before he got here (along with Ireland and Parcells). If these guys can't play for him, then I think we got a real big problem on our hands. First, they couldn't play for Cam (which I don't know who could by the way he coached), now Sparano. The only guy they liked was Saban, and look at the thanks they got. I think a lot of this is these are defenders, and Sparano is an offensive coach. Ask Pennington, Henne, Long, Smiley, Ricky and Ronnie what they think of Sparano (our offense is MUCH better than the last few years). The defenders had Paul P (sissy) as their coach, and I think after a year with Mike Nolan, most of them will fall in line with the team (or else you won't see them in a Dolphins uniform).

And by the time the segment was over, Porter had pulled back the curtain on exactly how dysfunctional the Dolphins really were in 2009. As he and Crowder talked you understood players don't really love coach Tony Sparano..
So, a couple of statements by a disgruntled player on the downside of his career with a deserved reputation as a loudmouth allows you to make that judgement....Shame on you! That is lousy reporting....As for Porter, he is a cancer that must be cut out so the rest of body can return to health....simple as that..
