Mike Mayock: Dolphins should pick Kindle

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock is a big fan of Sergio Kindle -- so much so, he rates the Texas outside linebacker prospect ahead of Alabama inside linebacker Rolando McClain and believes the Dolphins should pick him with the No. 12 overall pick of the draft.

"I think if you're trying to look, and I hear a lot of people talking about McClain versus an outside linebacker, to me in that 3-4 the outside linebacker is more important," Mayock said, thus agreeing with what Dolphins In Depth wrote about three weeks ago. "If Sergio Kindle is there at No. 12, I'd pull the trigger. I think he's an explosive edge rusher and I think he would instantly upgrade that team.

"They probably need a nose tackle. I think you can get one a little bit later in the draft and obviously the same thing at wide receiver. I really believe that depending on who's sitting there at 12, that's what they're also looking at: 'Kindle is an explosive playmaker on defense. Is there anybody at 12 that can help us on offense?' I don't think there's any way in the world [Oklahoma State wide receiver] Dez Bryant gets there. So if he's gone, does another wide receiver warrant consideration at 12? And I think that's some of the discussion that's going on right now."

Mayock says he has Mclain rated as the No. 17-best player in the country. He has Kindle at No. 7.

"I think Kindle's a better player," Mayock said. "And I think he's a fit for that team."

Kindle is 6-4 and 255 pounds. He obviously has prototype size, or rather, size Bill Parcells likes for his OLBs. Brandon Graham, whom I believe will be a better player? Not so much.

Graham is 6-1 and 263 and Mayock said his 30 1/2-inch arms were, "really short," and "teams would knock him down for that."

Mayock said he believes Graham will go in the 23ish range of the first round. Salguero says if the New England Patriots get him at No. 22, the Dolphins will rue the day. He will haunt Miami for years, in my opinion.

Kindle wears No. 2 in the video below.

This is what Scouts Inc.'s Todd McShay and Kevin Weidl wrote on ESPN.com's site today about Graham:

"A productive player who led the nation in tackles for loss (26) last season, Graham has developed into an impressive overall player. Although his lack of ideal height (6-foot-1) is an issue for some, Graham is technically sound, and he is explosive and shows good bend as a pass-rusher.

He is also an instinctive run-defender who uses strength and leverage to hold the edge, and Graham uses his hands well to control and disengage from blockers both against the run and the pass. He played with his hand in the dirt in college, but we feel he is best-suited as a pass-rushing 3-4 outside linebacker, similar to fellow former Wolverine LaMarr Woodley."

Mayock agrees that Graham reminds him of Woodley and added Graham has "one of the best motors in the draft," meaning he's relentless.

Let the debate continue ...

It would be hard for me to accept 2 Gators in the middle of our defense. :(

Mando,
Im with you, ill take Graham over Kindle any damn day. Im not a fan of Kindle and his huge 3 sacks this season.

Also, Graham is the better OLB prospect. We already have a pure pass rusher in Wake (who btw struggles against the run) why dont we go get Graham who is the best player against the run and who lead DIV 1 in tackles for loss and had over 10 sacks. to me its a no brainer. I would take Graham, Pierre Paul and Jerry Hughes over Kindle. Mayock is losing it.

I agree McClain is nothing out of this world.
I would like Earl Thomas or CJ spiller at that point if Dez Bryant is gone.

I am not sure that Kindle is the pass rusher needed in the 3-4 at the OLB position. Sure he has great size and will test well at the combine (and looked very good at the National Championship game); but his motor does run hot and cold. He would seem to be a better all-around athlete than Graham; but Graham comes off as the better football player.

As mentioned before - the best part of the NFL offseason is that free agency begins before the draft. Maybe we sign Karlos Dansby. Maybe we sign Ryan Pickett. Maybe we sign Antrell Rolle. Maybe we sign Ben Watson. Maybe we sign or trade for a #1 receiver like Anquan Boldin. It's a lot of maybes - but accomplishing 1 or 2 of those would go a long way in determining what our draft pick will be. All things being equal - I have to disagree with Mike Mayock who I respect more than McShay or Kiper - and say that if Graham shows the requisite athleticism, both at the combine and at his pro day, he is the better fit for our team at OLB.

Don't sleep on Dez Bryant if we don't upgrade WR before the draft now. The NFL is changing and the Dolphins and Parcells have to evolve with it. That being said Demaryious Thomas or Arrelious Benn in the 2nd round would be money.

After ton of posts, I only see Questions regarding all these dudes:
1) Mclain
2) Graham
3) Kindle

Trifecta will staq away from the hype and go NT if Bills don't get Williams before them. We gave up 50 more yards per game after Fergie went down!!!

We got to go with a Cane. Jimmy Graham seems about right there at number 12. This way we get a guy with a ton of upside and we start up da U back in the first round again.

We got a storm brewin here!

Go 'canes!

Yawn.

Dan Williams is the safest pick at #12

Good one Carlito @ 3:32

Sarasota, Your boy grahm pulled his Ted(Hands of stone)Ginn VS. Virg.Tech, not once but twice.... In consecutive plays... He could have scored twice on each play but for some reason he was unable to come down with the ball.... No thanks the mighty air breathers already have a choker in Ted(Fetal position)Ginn... Thanks for stopping by though....

The 49ers have reportedly informed NT Aubrayo Franklin that they will use the franchise tag to retain him for the 2010 season.
Franklin will join Pats NT Vince Wilfork as the only other player under the tag, with Steelers NT Casey Hampton next up. Despite the tag, beat writer Matt Maiocco is hearing that Franklin is available in trade for a first-round pick. That would give the Niners three first-rounders. Franklin will be guaranteed $7.003M under the tag.

DAN WILLIAMS IS LOOKING GOOD at 12

NJ, You still have the Buffoon post going on???? If you do I want to vote Sarasota as the Buffoon post of the day.....

Matt Roth had comically short arms which didn't hurt when locking on in the trenches with a tight end while defending the run, but did hurt him when trying to separate from tackles while rushing the passer. Graham (unless he most certainly is Lamar Woodley incarnate) might have the same issues. Solid, but not spectacular linebacker.

Kindle frightens me because of his Texas pedigree. They come to the NFL with a sense of entitlement and don't produce Lets go down the line of Texas first round clunkers.

Leonard Davis - 2nd overall pick. Found a niche in Dallas, but never lived up to his potential.

Mike Williams - Not quite the franchise left tackle Buffalo envisioned.

Roy E. Williams - Regressing as a player every year.

Marcus Tubbs - Who?

Cedric Benson - Trying to start over in Cincy.

Derrick Johnson - Underachiever with KC.

Michael Huff - An Al Davis special.

Vince Young - Is he finally coming around?

Casey Hampton, Aaron Ross, and Brian Orakpo, seem to have shed the prima donna label.

LOL @ Carlito 3:32

Waterboy - I think we gave up 50 more yards for more reasons than Ferg being hurt. Our defense didn't come to play the last 3 games of the season and that is not because Ferg was hurt...

I've always respected what Mayock has to say but I don't like his selection. I'll be interested to hear more of what he has to say about Kindle over the next few days. I have to admit I don't know a LOT about Kindle but from what I've seen and what I've heard he seems to have a lot of holes in his game. I think he has BUST written all over him. I don't beleive this is who the TRIFECTA will pick but I could be wrong.

if kindle is 255 pound than i have a brooklyn bridge to sell you. He is more like 235 pounds when he was playing at texas.

Dan Williams is has the non bust written all over him

NJ PHIN FAN - Didn't you say you respect what Mayock has to say on his predictions or am I mistaken? Just seeing if you like his prediction or not?

You got it meanace !

Sarasota 'cane - Seriously a TE with the #12 spot?? WTF dude?

Sergio Kindle looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane. If Mike Mayock knows so much, why isn't he running his own personnel dept.?

Kindle? McClain? I'm guessing we're forgetting bout the LB from Florida now? I'm still thinking Bryant will be taken by the Phins in the 1st round....and NT Williams will be the next pick......if it's not a LB....

CJ Spiller has to be the pick. The team that leaves Spiller on the draft board will regret it for years.

You can't win in the NFL if you can't score. Spiller is a threat to score everytime he touches the football.

Look at the teams who continue to make it to the Super Bowl. Do they have good defenses? Yes, they do. Are they dominating? No, they aren't.

Spiller is a nightmare in the waiting for defensive coordinators all over the league.

Draft the man and don't look back!

Darren wants to return to the Saints, but the Saints are letting him test FA world. Any chance (or is it good idea) Miami lands him? Get him for a year or maybe 2. He can be our key secondary veteran for Davis, Smith and Clemons. Look what he did for the young guys in NO, a.k.a. Tracy Porter....

Old Warrior - We are not drafting Spiller, so get over it. Way to many needs. You can't win games in the NFL when you can't stop the other team already and we need to have a defense heavy draft this year unless we get every FA on the market and that isn't happening...

You guys are kidding me right? We need a difference maker and its Graham. We need a cane so next year we gots 12 pro bowelers from da U

Go 'canes!

I am talking Jimmy Graham, your TE for the Fins!

Go canes!

Dude seriously, drafting him in the first would be a worse pick than when we drafted Ted Ginn in the 1st or Pat White in the 2nd. I am not saying we should not target him, but just NOT in the 1st freaking round JACKAZZZZZZ!!

Sarasota, That's why Nancy Reagan started"JUST SAY NO!!!"

Sarasota 'cane - You want a guy that has played 1 year of college ball to be drafted in the 1st round. I think you should be banned from life on this blog for posting or even thinking something like that!!! WTF dude?

Sarasota, Your boy grahm pulled his Ted(Hands of stone)Ginn VS. Virg.Tech, not once but twice.... In consecutive plays... He could have scored twice on each play but for some reason he was unable to come down with the ball.... No thanks the mighty air breathers already have a choker in Ted(Fetal position)Ginn... Sarasota, Do you Rember this game??????If not please put down your bong bro, " Fat drunk and stupid is no way to go through life son..."

The film doesn't lie. Kindle definitely looks like the better player compared to McClain.

he doesn't look that big or strong

Mayock is out to lunch on this one.

Kindle had a career 16.5 sacks - 10 coming in 2008 when Orakpo was on the field drawing much of the attention; 33.5 tackles for loss; 3 fumbles forced; 5 passes defended; and 151 tackles - decent numbers. You would have like to have seen him get more than 6 sacks last year after Orakpo left.

Sarasota, please tell me ur kidding, nobody who watches football can be that f'u''cen stupid...at best he is a fourth round pick..Go to a blog specifically built for guys like u "wwwfootballshortbus.com"

LOL Bobby12.....

he doesn't look that big or strong

Posted by: beerphin | February 23, 2010 at 04:54 PM

I will agree with him not looking that big for a LB (OLB or ILB). His stature looked more like a big safety as for size, but like I have stated before I am not that familiar with Kindle. Graham looks bigger even with his "small arms"

Bobby, they might not take sarasota on that bus.... He might need a whole new bus....

boobyd12 100% agree!!

This guys last few posts may have been the dumbest things I have heard in the past month. At least it is football talk and gives most if not all of us a good laugh...don't leave and stay on this blog!! lol

in the last month....well maybe of ALL TIME!!

Cedric Benson was a top 5 rb in the NFL last year. Just ask his fantasy owners. You can take him off that list. Everyone keeps saying draft Earl Thomas. He plays for the same Texas team that Kindle plays for.

Now this guy's explosive!

I just don't see him being around in the second round. Wes Bunting has us taking Graham in the first. It opens up the field and we can get the running game going. I hope he gets invited to NY so we can share in the cane pride once he gets picked at #12!!!!(unless he goes before)

Plus, I think it can help Randy with his recruiting too. Da U puts players in the NFL.

Go 'canes!

UNFU@KING BELIVABLE.........

in the last month....well maybe of ALL TIME!!

He out did himself.... NJ are you on the blog right now??????? I dont think we need to wait any longer for you to chose the converted "BUFFOON QOUTE OF THE DAY"....

Love this Blog, you guys are the BEST! LOL

Mayock re: Kindle "explosive edge pass rusher"

Kindle 2009 = 3 sacks

Graham's 10 sacks and Morgan's 12 sacks must make them better than Deacon Jones.

This is the winner.....................PS did not mean to put your post up there Indy....

You guys really aren't thinking this through.

Go 'canes!

Funny how the daily winner BigaFly isn't here and now Sarasota shows up...mmmmmm

guys whoever sarasota is he is screwing with you... i hope

All year long, all you kept harping on was Ted Ginn Jr's inability to do the job, and the vaccuum at wide receiver and the all consuming need need for a play making WR. Now, after lobying ao intensely to cut Joey Porter, all I here from you is the desire for a linebacker.
I know journalism is a tough business and you guys are under a lot of pressure to write something...ANYTHING...but I have watched you (and other writers and radio jocks) exacerbate a lesser issue until it escalated to the point where the dumb (less articulate) jock is goaded into saying and doing things that would not have been said or done in the pre-microscopic media era of say, even, Don Shula.
Sometimes you hurt your own team, Armondo, more than you help them...I'd even go as far as saying that you do it often.
As far as the original need for a playmaking tool for our young QB to use reliably downfield, what about someone like Shipley at #12? Shipley made Colt McCoy look like a star. Yes, McCoy was a good college QB but does anyone think he'll be a great NFL QB in the next few years? Probably not.
WR on the other hand is another story. Or better yet, Golden Tate should be available at #12 too! Mel Kiper has Clausen going in the TOP FIVE...NOOOOO! Is he NUTS???? Clausen ahead of the QB triumverate of Tebow, McCoy, and Bradford?? OK, granted, Tebow will probably end up at FB and Bradford's arm is questionable, and McCoy is noo quiet to lead a pro team, but the fact is that Kiper would NEVER even have considered Claussen if it wasn't for Golden Tate.
Draft a WR

It is all good cuban BUT I got one better:

BUFFOON QOUTE OF THE DECADE if not CENTURY!!!

BTW, who in the hell is

OMG..... These guys are talking Offense(Kevin,Sarasota, Etc,etc) Guy's the fins lost to Indy and New orleans cause of the Defense and lost the last 3 games cause the Defense didnt show up for those games... GET A CLUE!!!!!!!!! They need help on the Defense....

Sarasota 'cane just created his TypePad account an hour or so ago...fake post by some jackazzzz just seeing what we all would say...

cuban @ 5:33 --> great point and agreed

I'm out on this last display of compelte stupidity!! Later!!

Probably get some hate mail but the only real defense is played in the SEC, If I’m gonna draft a defensive guy; ILB, OLB, NT, S, or CB, I’m gonna go SEC. Eric Berry, Rolando McClain, Joe Haden, Dan Williams, Carlos (DUI)Dunlap, 2ND Round: Brandon(eye gouger) Spikes, Terrence(fat boy)Cody.

Don't Hate.

LOL CM they must have been watching some other game that we weren't watching as much as we hate Ted Ginn we would have been able to win those games like you said if our defense would have stood up.
