Well, you saw the long and unimpressive list of unrestricted free agents that could hit the market once free agency begins March 5. That list is unimpressive because it lacks the younger, in-their-prime group of players that typically become free agents every spring -- the guys with four or five years of experience with expiring contracts.
If there is no new collective bargaining agreement by March 5 and the NFL goes to an uncapped year, players must have at least six credited NFL seasons to be considered unrestricted free agents. Fewer than six credited seasons and a player is restricted.
What follows are the more than 200 players with four or five credited season who will be restricted, rather than unrestricted, if 2010 is uncapped.

Ron in OC, let me ask you a question, and I'd like an honest answer. You are knowledgable. McClain could play ILB in any defense, but you would agree that he is better suited for the 3-4? Let's look at the draft order. Teams running a 3-4 in front us. KC at 5, probably too early for McClain, but you would have said the same thing about Tyson Jackson last year. CLE at 7, BUF at 9, DEN at 10. I would find it hard to believe McClain makes it past all these teams. If he does, a team targeting McClain would have to think MIA would pick him at 12, so maybe they trade into 11. Or that doesn't happen, and he is available at 12. IF all thatwere to happen, then MIA would have to pass him up. I named you 5 legit landing spots. Would you be willing to really go out on a limb and say he is still on the board at 13? A different thing saying you might not like a player, than him not getting taken. You can't think he will be available at 13. Or do you? I'm not knocking you, just asking a question.

And I meant Rob not Ron, stupid iPhone corrects itself wrongly sometimes.

Guys, good read right on the front page of movethesticks.com about the Dolphins. Funny he mentions McClain as the very first name when talking draft. Just throwing it out there lol. Anyway, very in depth.
Posted by: Bootang25 | February 18, 2010 at 10:20 PM
And Rob, his sleeper pick was B Graham. His assessment is dead on about just about everything. He chides the team for the Pat White pick. Very honest.

1. It doesn't matter what any of the experts predict: There are ALWAYS late round gems, early round busts and people that get picked earlier or later than was predicted. They are not perfect nor are they all knowing. They make sense, but they never know exactly how well a college player will perform once they play in the big league..
2. Stating with 100% certainty that you know what Parcels will do based only on his history, while completely ignoring the fact that he picked P White in Rd 2, is juvenile. Sure, P. White has yet to pan out - but to that I say 1. P White may never be great or even that good, but they will not dump him yet - and I expect to see they give him some time before they admit he is a bust. 2. But more importantly, wether it worked or not, the very fact that the pick was made means that Parcels is not 1000% predictable like you insist he is. Perhaps he is 95% predictable - but calling people idiot for entertaining the thought that he might do something out of the ordinary is just not nice! Damn, stop being so angry!
That being said, I believe they go defense for 2 if not 3 of their top 3 picks. I believe that my belief is based on them not making any FA acquisitions, on them having the opportunity to fill the NT, OLB, S or ILB needs with people they believe have value.. but no one can predict who will be available when we pick, who will be interested in moving up and if it would be worth the risk, nor can anyone say with any certainty what will happen in FA..
My point is that everyone has their opinion but just because your opinion is in line with more popular beliefs does not guarantee you are correct nor does it give you carte blanche authority to rip anyone with a dissenting opinion a new a-hole.
Posted by: LipsinToronto | February 18, 2010 at 11:08 PM
one more thing:
I've never seen Rob say that McClain sucked. What I have seen him say is that from the little he has seen, he doesn't agree that he will be an all star NFL player destined to the HOF. He has repeatedly asked for your help in getting him to see in McClain what you see.. he has said that if Miami got McClain, that he hopes he is wrong.. but he wants to see what people see in this kid.. he doesn't just want to read a report...
Sure, he is bucking popular belief, but 11 years ago, popular belief couldn't decide who the better QB would be - P. Manning or R. Leaf... so popular belief is no where near 100% accurate...

Rob how do you expect the Phins to cut or trade Pennington when he is unsigned?????
Posted by: carlito from golfito | February 18, 2010 at 11:18 PM
Hey Folks,
Sorry, I was summoned away and didn't say anything about stepping away.
bobbyd,
Too bad you get so bent about me not bending down with you to kiss the ring and annoint McClain the Don of All LB's WITHOUT being convinced by what I see in his play with my own eyes. Rough, rough? Do you ever listen / see the scrums that you pile on that NJ PHIN unleashes??? I'm a cream puff compared to him. Asking you for a different article that may be less biased because it doesn't come from the Bama Homer Gazzette? Actually having the gall to ask you for clips or video that shows me the crazy awesome play that McClain is purported to deliver? That's beating the crap out of McClain? Saying I would prefer the CLEAR #2 guy over the CLEAR #1 guy at a certain position is what you can't handle? I'm not so sure blog life is for you, if that's considered a big flap.
They "Cheers" finisher on the end of my posts is so you know I'm still keeping everything in perspective and upbeat... Kinda like we were all hooligans rooting for the same soccer team. Well we are and it's the REAL Football we are cheering for.
Lastly, if my dummyhead Youtube clips showed McClain making knarly bone crushing, punishing tackles then they would make me a liar. If they showed him tossing aside blockers, locating the ballcarrier on the other side of the LoS and dropping him harshly then we would be on the same side of the argument or my videos would promote your case for you.
Sorry, I don't see it, even with his big size and decent speed.
Cheers,
Posted by: Rob in OC | February 19, 2010 at 12:05 AM
What the videos did show was his ability to be at the point of attack, in coverage or out wide. He did miss a couple of arm tackles, but he seems to have a lot of football smarts, and that is USUALLY the hardest part to teach. He looks like someone that can help the Dolphins, specially with coverage..
I think he will be a solid player, but hey, who knows?
But what does BP think?
Posted by: LipsinToronto | February 19, 2010 at 12:13 AM
Bootang @ 9:26,
No problem. Never hesitate to ask whatever questions you like bud. I got nothing to hide. I'm not the end all be all of everything football. I just think I can recognize when players have the talent, speed, size, and ability to play as good as the next guy. That's it.
I think that with the way some, mostly those super keen on McClain, describe him he should be snapped up by the 1st team going Def that plays a 3-4. You mentioned KC at 5 and that is probably too high for an ILB but your Tyson Jackson example is spot on...you never know.
I feel like EVERY 3-4 team that passes on him from the time he can be picked is a pushing the NFL player talent pendulum toward what I am saying I see "holes in his game". I would say if McClain gets snapped up before the Phins pick it will be two things.
1.) It will drive home the fact that it only takes one team to like him for what they saw, size, study habits, leadership, big school, knowing coverages etc and they obviously believe he will be a Willis type player.
2.) I'll be relieved as heck as I don't have to worry about the Fins having to coach him up on the things I didn't see and I know the Fins still have a chance to get some players I feel would help more.
If the Fins have the chance to get him @#12 I hope he is still there for other teams to pick at #13, Yes.
Cheers,

Bootang @10:25,
Are you meaning bobbyd has B Graham as a sleeper, chides the team for Pat White and is very honest?
If so, that's great. I would rather have his sleeper than his #1 choice. I thought he had mentioned Dan Williams if the McClain pick didn't work out? I could be wrong and forgive me if I'm incorrect bobbyd and Bootang as there are too many screen names and thoughts wizzing by daily.
Cheers,
Posted by: Rob in OC | February 19, 2010 at 12:28 AM
No rob, read my earlier post about going to movethesticks.com. The guy is a great source of info, and on the front page he has a perfect breakdown of the Dolphins. He first mentions McClain, but lists Graham as a sleeper for our pick. Thought you would like that.
Posted by: Bootang25 | February 19, 2010 at 12:31 AM
Lipsin @11:08, 11:15,
VERY GOOD POSTS!!! They really nail down how inexact all this talent guesswork is.
Honing in on your second page I really try not to say anyone sucks and especially put it in ink.
A.) I never forget it's an eductaed guess and any position or player from any round has certain inherent bust risks.
B.) I hate to eat crow, in fact I don't like eating any exotic birds at all. ;) Seriously, I stop short of saying a guy like McClain sucks because at some point I would draft him. (somewhere around our 2nd pick makes sense to me) He will / should be long gone in the 1st but that is where I personally have him valued.
I REALLY appreciate you reading and trying to explain my positions from what you read in posts Lipsin. Sometimes things just sound better coming from someone else's words or writing style. Your last paragraph drives home the point with emphasis!
Cheers,

Rob in OC:
I want to see how well McClain Bench-presses at The Combine.
THAT will tell me a bit more about his raw tools.
Judging from the limited amount of public footage, he does seem to Arm-tackle a lot...and he also tends to tackle high.
But, like I've said before, We're only seeing a fraction of his body of work.
I hope there is more film somewhere of him colliding with people.
Cheers!

I think that whatever Chad does he will consult with the Fins or at least let them know his plans and give them 1st right to employ him. If they do sign him and say halfway through the season his health is good and say AZ QB's struggle mightily, that is when a late round pick trade may work.
I am strictly going by Chad's personality and demeanor on this. He could skate away scott free but, I think he would feel he owes the Fins at least that much respect.

Lipsin @12:13,
As I said in my post, they guy can definitely play and it's not like he never tackled anyone while at Bama. I just don't see him tackilng through ballcarriers, flying in after running full speed and diving like a missile. Bending and launching (stiff in the hips) doesn't seem natural as I watch him. In the second round area is where I would take him. Some of the issues I think I am seeing should be able to be coached out if you will. It is for that reason I would not take the guy @12.
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder for sure.

Joey in Jersey @12:47,
LOL, MY KINGDOM FOR HIS COLLISION FOOTAGE!
I hear ya. The combine will be yet another little slice of the pie. Some teams over-value the combine getting them into trouble but, it is a great chance to se all guys side to side.
To watch Pat White at the combine you would have said his arm strength was the least of his problems. He didn't look like the same guy last year behind center?? Who knows... I'm hoping, what a difference a year makes for him.
I remember Valasquez the OL the Chargers picked up benched the most last year if I recall. He played pretty well for the Bolts. Chris Johnson rocketed along the track as a 40 time blazer and he faired well. I remember all these really low 40 times at the combine and they said later the clocks weren't working right. The fellas were joking "That's why they do the hand held timers anyways".
I am actually looking forward to Brandon Grahams bench reps and showing for that matter. I have Graham as my #1 Def choice @12 and CJ Spiller if they are compelled to go Off.

Mclain valued as a 2nd rounder ?? Rob in OC. You have no idea of what the hell you're talking about. Get a clue !!!

Indiana Jones Dolfan,
Before you go off all half cocked, reread the part where it's MY VALUE! You can't take MY Value from me as you have your own along with the sea of other opinions.
Because I SPECIFICALLY phrased it MY VALUE...after further booth review... it stands!
Cheers,
Now I sent you a question on the other post, what do you think?
Posted by: Rob in OC | February 19, 2010 at 02:55 AM
Indian Dolfan,
Do you realize that you would be saying the same thing to me if I were to say Vernon Gholston was a 2nd rounder back when that draft happened?
Or maybe something as audacious as "Ryan Leaf? I wouldn't touch that guy with a 10 foot pole before that draft."
What if right before the draft I said something really dumb like "I like this Tom Brady QB from Michigan in the 3rd?" I would have been lambasted and spewed with diatribe just for suggesting it. Right now, I would be looking pretty good.
Remember the total CRAP that Houston took for taking DE Mario Williams over RB Reggie Bush? A few year later and it's at least a wash and probably favors what Houston did.
I can put McClain anywhere on my own list I want and for me I would pick others in the 1st before him so he would get squeezed into the second round or be chosen by some other team in the 1st. Either way he most likely doesn't end up falling to me and I have to live with that.

With Demaryius Thomas' foot injury yesterday he could definitely fall to the last couple of rounds. I love this guy, and I really hope Miami takes a chance on him.

Good point India Dolfan
WHERE ARE THE UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENST ARMANDO?
THAT'S A LITTLE MORE INTERESTING TO EVALUATE THAN RESTRICTED, WHO 85% WON'T EVEN CHANGE TEAMS

Um, I published the list of unrestricted free agents first on this very blog ... like yesterday.
Hello?

If the Fins pick up Dansby in FA and then during the draft McClain is there for us, then I believe the Fins will have some opportunities to trade down. I believe this because other teams will think about Parcells doubling up on position of need.
I can see us trading down in first and getting a third rounder in addition. We need more than 2-3 good players in this draft.
