Dolphins interest in Mike Williams is interesting

OK, they're not interested in Brandon Marshall. I get that. They're not interested in Terrell Owens, even as a short-term solution to a big problem. I sort of get that, also.

The Dolphins might not be interested in Dez Bryant if it takes the No. 12 overall selection in the draft to get him. Something about risk versus reward. I get that, too.

Yet there is an interest in Mike Williams.

Hmmmm. I'm trying to get that.

The team brought Williams for a visit at the Davie, FL. training facility on Thursday and spent several hours with him.

Williams is a 6-2, 220-pound prototype from Syracuse University. Well, he was from Syracuse University until he reportedly left the team in November. Those reports, by the way, were the result of Syracuse coach Doug Marrone saying Williams quit the team. So the sourcing cannot be questioned. Williams quit the team according to his coach.

It was a strange situation because Marrone said Williams went to him without being summoned and simply quit.

Asked at the time why Williams quit the team, Marrone said, "You'd have to ask him. I have no idea. I'm not going to discuss the conversation from my end. Obviously, I told you that he came up to me and voluntarily took himself off the team. That's it."

Well, that's not really it.

Reports later surfaced that Williams was on the verge of being suspended by Marrone when he decided to quit. It wasn't the first time Williams had issues at Syracuse. He was suspended from school in 2008 for cheating on a test.

When he quit with four games left in the season, Williams had 49 catches for 746 yards and six touchdowns. He ranked first in the Big East and 14th nationally with seven receptions per game. He was first in his conference and 20th nationally in receiving yards.

The saga of Williams leaving the team in 2009 is a big issue for teams. When a player leaves a team it raises questions as to how much he loves the game, it raises questions whether he's a quitter, it raises questions whether he's likely to repeat the offense in the pros if things get tough, because as Nick Saban used to say, past actions is the best predictor of future actions.

"I've been talking to all the NFL teams about that," Williams said during the Indianapolis Combine in February. " I want to leave it at that. But what I want everybody to know is I didn't quit. I'll leave that story at that."

So Williams didn't want to say what actually happened, or what he believes happened, but he did want to remove the doubt about him quitting.

"I told the teams that, all the teams know the whole story," Williams said. "I want to leave it at that, I don't want to make it a big media story. I just want everybody to know I didn't quit."

Williams apparently is admitting to teams that he cheated on the test. He told them he simply doesn't like school. And he's telling teams that he can be reliable.

"I want to let them know that I'm a nice person, I'm a good person," Williams said. "School was just my problem. I had bad judgment when I was young. School has been my problem, I want to let them know I can play football and be there for that team."

Obviously the Dolphins have bought in -- at least to the point of bringing Williams to town.

A mock draft is a good idea. I've never done one. I'll do each week in April, which I guess is next week. Ha.

When did I say I was offended?

Take him in a later round if he's available....looked good on the video...good size.....goes after the ball...not afraid to go across the middle..... GINN!!!! Yes we need a WR.....but we are not in a whole without a veteran WR.....we'll be OK.....a playmaker rookie WR....is not a bad route to go....

Armando, have you ever heard a better sound bite than "Ted Ginn is a Miami Dolphin" during your career as a Fins Beat Writer?

Armando I just feel like if he's available with one of our 6th rd picks this kid could reall be a gem in the rough. I'm not suggesting any higher.

Sure he needs work, but look at the last 4-5 games of the 09 season. It's as if all of a sudden the light switch came on. I believe he avg around 20yds per catch the last 4-5 games after a career of relatively nothing. That has to be accounted for in someway if you're a scout.

I believe with some pro tutoring this kid could be the next Ed McCafferty. Do a little research on his last 4-5 games and I'm sure you may have a least a slight tendancy to feel the exact same way ok?

This is when, Waterboy, or at least that's how I read it:

No Mando, look at the title of your blog and your opening lines. Thats my problem, you are trying to imply, hmmm... they dont like such and such problem childs (TO and Marshall) but they can bring in this problemo (Williams). Thats my beef. If you were just reporting the visit, I would be fine.

Dying Breed...in the right situation Cooper might succeed. In most I doubt he does. And its an insult to Ed McCaffrey to say Cooper reminds you of him. Tall and white - that's all they got in common. McCaffrey was fearless, a good route runner but didn't have Cooper's straightline speed.

Thanks Joe,

Got your message the other day; like the idea about “hits and misses”. Very valid discussion; Kool-Aid and all.

I was not offended, just tired of the comparison angle I guess.

Although Sparano has not had any quoted blunders, he actually was caught on camera trying to call a time out after an interception.

Maybe the only good play Ayodele had this season

I keep waiting on some dope to threaten to hold his breath until Miami pay's up for Marshall. Even though Miami is only 1 of 31 other teams who want nothing to do with him. As far as Dez Bryant is concerned, I'll say this name... "Eugene Parker"... does this name ring a bell? If you follow the draft closely, you should know that name. "Michael Crabtree" was last years cash cow for "Eugene Parker". He held his client out so long that Michael was nearly disqualified for the season and sent packing for the CFL. I would bet my '76 Gibson Explorer that he'll hold his NEW TOY... "Dez Bryant"... as long as he can for as much as he can THIS SEASON. I would say that last years hold out was not lost on Bill, Tony and Jeff. They will not deal with shyt like that. They will pay for what a guy is worth and in some cases (like Dansby) they will give market value rather then worth, But not on a flaky receiver. Miami is not "cheap", far from it. They had the second highest payroll in the NFL last season. It is one of the problems this team is trying to solve. Many top heavy contracts given to marginalized players (Injury issues, productivity issues, over paid issues, age issues) are being shaved this year because they can do so without getting hurt... Very Smart. Next season is being touted as one of the best FA pools since the late 90's early 2000's when they were always stocked. This is another thing not lost on our Management staff. I know you cannot beat patients and being smart with your players into some fans who believe they know it all's heads... but if you try REAL HARD... and think past Brandon Marshall and other people who are poor value for this team... you can see what this team is trying to accomplish. I apologize for the long winded post.

I get you on Cooper, Dyingbreed.

The fact is none of us know if a guy is going to suddenly turn into a stud in the NFL or go the other direction. And the funny thing is the NFL teams don't know either.

Thus Tom Brady and Zach Thomas in the late rounds. Thus JaMarcus Russell as the first overall pick.

It's a crapshoot.

I liked Fiedler's toughness but it seemed like with all of the money he was making he could have afforded a little cosmetic surgery on his ears.

Good to see you floating around Armando... How goes it?

Any news Armando on anyone coming in for a FA visit for our safety positioning??? I know u reported not long ago u reported that they are still looking to bring someone in....Sharper, Atowge or do u think no more action till draft time???

Armando, Riley Cooper in the 6th rd is worth the gamble for any team, lol.

At 6th rd you pretty much expect a player to be on your developmental squad, anything other than that is pure gravy.

I'm good Bill. Busy week. I'm writing Sunday's Dolphins column as we speak.

I always want to remind you all how appreciative I am that you come here and even hang out.

You guys are the reason my family eats. Well, you know what I mean.

Jay Fiedler ...
may be the worst Starting Quarterback the Dolphins have ever had.

...and Wannstedt may have been their worst Coach.

why wouldn't you want me to post that?

You got a man crush on Kiper or McShay?

Ask Bill, if Denver doesn't come off wanting a 1st round pick I see him staying in Denver...ur right, this guy is a complete train wreck

I see Carolina as a trade partner for either PigPen or any our WR that doesnt make the cut.

I think the Dolphins are doing much concentrating on the draft right now, bobby.

I'll come back later, guys. Gotta get that column written or my Friday night is going to stink.

Dying Breed.... Speaking of his "Toughness" remember when Fiedler lowered his shoulder going into the end zone and leveled Trace Armstrong who had just been sent to the Raiders?... That Dolphins Raiders game was one of my favorite all time games. Rich "the cannon" Gannon was so pissed at the crowed... he totally lost his composure. That was the "Who let the Dogs out?" days in Dolphin stadium. He was caught on film cussing at the fans who were chanting it after a HUGE int in the 4th Quarter... great game.

Post what, Odin? I have no idea what you're talking about. Zero.

Pat White Lowered his shoulder and got creamed

Hey Lou Costello,

I disagree with Fiedler being the worst, we've had Beck, Cleo Lemon, and the list goes on and on. He probably makes top 10 though.

But he probably makes top 3 in a list of toughest Dolphins qb's ever. He could sure take a lickin and keep on tickin, lol.

Beck was quite hilarious, I will never forget he went back to pass, and fumbled with no one even near, for a buffalo touchdown!

bobbyd12.... I believe Denver will cut a deal w/ someone in the draft for BM if they are really serious about ridding themselves of him... otherwise this whole deal has just been a shot at having a #11 - #? first round Draft Selections which can turn any team around very fast. I want a Great WR just like everyone else... I just think its a waste on a team who is still so questionable in Fundamental protection issues both offensive and defensive... get that at least pointed in the right direction and a Bomb shell contract on a wide out would be welcomed by me...Thoughts?

Here's a question:

If Marshall gets cut.

...and there's SO little interest that he drops his price to a around a Million per year (which is Very Very unlikely.)

-- does this Team take a chance?

Thats worst than the dude for the Lions who Safetied himself

Aotogwe(? spelling) is going to want a bunch of loot to play. He was the Rams franchise player in 2009 and made over 6 mil. His contract w/ them this year pays him 1.2 mil. I hear he is asking for 7 mil, don't think that will happen here. What would be a good price for him?

Step away from the koolaid Yazzi, under no circumstance will Marshall be cut, lol.

Yes, Yes he did WATERBOY... I am told he is still Mumbling something about a truck and someone getting the license plate number....

LOL Mando @ 3:32. What will the new one be?

YAZZI...... If He Gets CUT??... I think any team who did not look at grabbing him as a possibility would be foolish.... but... it ain't gonna happen....

Hey Mando love the blogs.

I mean the kid said he don't like school and that is very possible. Who does? I can see why you would take a chance on him over T.O. or Marshall.

Marshall is a head case he has had physcical altercations/domestic violence with him. His character alone is enough for me to say I don't want him at all.

T.O are you guys serious? Who wants the problems and antics that he brings. He is a locker room cancer. He has divided the locker room everywhere he has been. He played nice in Buffalo because he didn't have the chance to make his mark in a negative way.

Williams is a a kid who got caught cheating on a test and left the school. He went back and my guess is he couldn't hack it in school again. Kids in school that have trouble learning usually don't fair well in other areas either. Not to come off like a psychologist but its known when kids aren't able to perform even at an early age in life generally withdraw from everything else. Williams probably just wants to play football and not want to or possibly can't cut in college with academics. That doesn't make him stupid or dumb. Has anyone seen their local high school students lately? I am right outside Philly and it is among the top 20 cities in the country of illiteracy.

If Williams can play football and Miami can get him in round 3 or 4 he could be a steal!

"I mean the kid said he don't like school and that is very possible. Who does? I can see why you would take a chance on him over T.O. or Marshall." from 3:56 PM

Sorry should of said how can you compare him to T.O. or Marshall in my previous statement

Ask Bill, agree with u 100% on our WR situation and where we need to draft...I can't add anything else...As far as Marshall goes, I wonder if Denver is serious about dumping Marshall...I mean, at least they know what they are dealing with...if ur Denver do u dump Marshall and draft Dez, another potential nut job???? Seems to me ur getting rid of one character problem for maybe the exact same type of guy...Dolphins draft, NT, TE, OLB, FS, I would solve those 4 before I look at WR

a.j. feeley was pretty bad. beck and lemon had nothing to work with and at least lemon could run. culpepper was bad as well but we all know he was rushed to play. i'm gonna say brian griese was miami's worst starting qb.

Waterboy, Pat White got shoestringed and stumbled and got creamed. I don't think he tried or intended to lower his shoulder but he had no ther choice.

Carolina Panthers need receivers and have no first round pick....Knock knock Carolina, here's Teddy and a # 12. Interested???

DyingBreed I agree Fiedler wasn't the worst. He did what he could talent wise. He just didn't have many physical blessings to work with. He was a tough QB I agree with you there. It wasn't his fault that Wannstedt was a bad coach and stuck with him in what seemed like forever,

DyingBreed: (@ 3:47 PM)

Those guys were pretty bad too...

Wanni pursued and signed Fiedler as if he were a Franchise Quarterback -- and the answer to all the team's problems. (It was almost like the guy had hypnotized Wannstedt into thinking he was good or something.)

Most of the time Fiedler was unremarkable and TOO often he was a 'Drive Killer' all by himself. (I'll give him the 'tough' thing but those hits were only because he had NO AGILITY.) -- Fiedler had BELOW average passing skills. -- and an delusionally high opinion of himself.

It was one of the most frustrating periods I have ever
had as a Fan.

He didnt like school huh, maybe it's cause he's not bright. Didnt we get rid of the MENZA member known as Joey(DUHHHH)Porter???? Just say no to this guy, and isnt there a rule on how many Mike Williams can be in the league at the same time anyway???lol

The facts remain that we need 3 starters from this draft: 2 OLB's + 1 FS. They probably have to draft 5 or 6 defenders to try and find 3 starters.
There are no unsigned free agents superior to Porter, Taylor & Wilson so if we don't draft 3 starters we're f u c k e d.
Don't tell me about Darren Sharpton either.

Cuban Menace lol yea Mike Williams isn't a successful name (WR from USC, OT from Texas both first round bust). You are right he might not be "bright" but who cares what his GPA is. Like I said in the inner city and poor areas and I'm not sure what Williams background is but the education system is a joke in this country. It wouldn't neccessarily be someones fault if they aren't college material.

Naaah...Peasy had too much estrogen!

He was prone to

Please don't give any Saban quotes on anything. The guy has ZERO credibility, especially with us Dolphins fans. How ironic that you do a piece on QUITTING a team and a quote from Nick Saban appears.

PriceMaster, I disagree that we need 3 starters. Cam Wake needs to be given the opporunity to be the starter at one OLB. The other needs to be drafted and yes needs to be a starter. FS I agree either they sign one of the remaining guys out there or draft someone to compete with Clemons and Culver and may the best man win the battle in training camp.

I have to be honest, the kid doesn't really impress me. He looks slow. Does any know what his 40 time was?

I would think if you've got a guy who cheated in school and didn't like school, it's a red flag on him. Sounds like he wasn't prepared to put the work in to get through school and overcome whatever his shortcoming were. Not sure that's a guy you want to trying to grasp an NFL playbook, and become a better pro.

Price, There gonna draft defense with the 1st 4 picks I'am sure, And Lou your right, you could almost see the "Spotting" around the groin area, maybe he should have used a bigger "Maxi-pad"......

LMAO great point Craig M. I might catch hell but I don't blame Saban for bolting. I mean look what he has done at Alabama. He realized the NFL wasn't for him what was he supposed to do. Coach Miami until his contract was up when he didn't want to deal with NFL players's egos and BS?

Why can't you be more like rain man? ;)

I hope you're right on that Cuban M. I want this to be as top heavy as Rosie Perez with defensive players early on. The Dolphins have done a great job in the offseason with 2 great additions in Mike Nolan and Karlos Dansby but this defense was horrible last year it's going to take a few more pieces and maturing by some of the young players. I am ready to see Merling or Langford step up more. They didn't progress much in their second years. Vontae is going to be the deal! Sean Smith well we will see?

Even if Wake starts do we have any other OLB's now? Is Quentin Moses an OLB?
