The wide receiver hungry Dolphins were on the Illinois campus over the weekend looking at a possible draft pick in the same place they found last year's first round pick in cornerback Vontae Davis.
The Dolphins had wide receiver coach Karl Dorrell on hand as to time, test, and talk to Arrelious Benn.
It was a good Pro Day for Benn by all accounts, as he ran a 4.42 and 4.40 on some watches but was timed as low as 4.38 on some stopwatches.
Benn also had a 37-inch vertical leap at 6-1 and 218 pounds).
To run a 4.40 at 6"1 and 218 pounds is a big deal. Those are very good measurables.

Sorta suprised, Benn a little smallish compared to D. Thomas and Damian Williams but gotta check everyone out...would be disappointed if they considering him as first pick though

The Dolphins could really use another 2nd or 3rd round pick (cant every team?). Tyler Thigpen is simply better than anyone on the Bills' roster (where his former offensive coordinater, Chan Gailey, is the head coach). Pure speculation, but I wouldnt be shocked if something happened there, especially since the Dolphins could convince the Bills that they would need really great compensation since they are trading a starting QB within the divison. So maybe the Dolphins could demand a 2nd or 3rd rounder (when he's probably worth a 4th), given that context.

The scouts were also suprised at his height and miami isn't considering with the 1st pick. Maybe the 2nd pick .

It is funny because in looking at Arrelious Benn I see a lot of another guy with the same initials, Anquan Boldin. Not a blazing guy, or the greatest route runner (which can be improved) but he excels after the catch. His size presents mismatches, he is not Randy Moss big but the guy is put together. That Illinois team with Juice, Mendenhall and Benn was really good Benn's freshman year. His productivity leaves a lot to be desired, but I don't make too big a deal out of that. Him and Golden Tate are the two WRs I have locked in on for the 2nd round, although neither may be available.

Maybe I am wrong, but I understand the kid has very inconsistent hands. If that is the case, why he heck would we want another receiver who can't catch the ball? Already have Mr. Ginn as a project, we dont need another one with a high draft pick. I would rather we find a way to take the kid from Notre Dame (I doubt he drops to our second pick) or the kid from Ohio University who should be there at two. Both dont drop balls and are fast enough to get the job done.

We need wide receivers that are consistent while catching the ball, speed without good hands does no good! What ever happened with D. Thomas from Georgia Tech, that's the guy we should be concentrating on, in the second round.I still see the dolphins trading down and picking-up a second or third and choosing Graham the DE/OLB from Michigan, that's who we need in the first, but not at #12 pick,he would not be a valued pick that high!

Karl Dorrell is still with the Dolphins? The Fins WR corps dropped ball stats should have been enough to move him on down the line.
Look at the list of WRs coming out this year, pick the ones that are clear #2s or worse and they will be at the top of Miami's list. Why? Simple - this is a ball control, TE/RB oriented, short passing game team. #1 receivers are not necessary in this offense. Whatever Mando says, whatever any of us want, those are the facts, Jack. I know Mando said (in his article today) that the Fins have realized the lack of a #1 the last two years was a mistake but he is going off Jeff Irelands statement. Ireland lies to reporters. A lot. In this case, he is talking out of his backside. The Fins have not realized the lack of a #1 is a mistake. They like it that way.
This is not to say that their idea of an offense will work. I believe Mando is right and most of us are right that they need a #1. I just know it's not going to happen.
A fast TE with good hands - absolutely. Look for that in the draft - maybe as high as a 2nd, especially if they can trade down (Dallas/Arizona/Tampa - they have two #2s). Might be the only offensive player taken - maybe a late round WR who play exactly like Hartline, Ginn and Cam. Or maybe an RB too. But not until 6 or 7.

People keep talking about trading down...You have to have a trade partner to do that, and I didn't see much of that happening last year. I think teams are starting to realize the value of their draft picks, and are much more reticent to give away a pick to move up a bit in any round.
Please don't talk anymore about the Dolphins trading UP for anyone. The trifecta may be mere mortals when it comes to their draft selections, but they are not chumps...

If D Thomas runs well at his pro day i have seen some people say he could be the 1st WR taken, I don't think he makes it to MIA's 2nd.
No offense to anyone specific, to think we'd get a 2nd or 3rd for Thigpen? There is no chance. Trade picks are so valuable now, I'd love another 2nd, such a deep draft, but it's going to be hard to pick one up. I don't know that I would want to see them trade back far enough in the 1st as it would take to get a 2nd. I would just love to see someone that can rush the passer in 1. I can't see it being an offensive guy in 1. OLB,FS, maybe NT
