Five days into free agency is no time to panic

Unrestricted free agency started as a sprint over the weekend when many NFL teams jockeyed for position to immediately land their prize targets or re-sign their best players.

The Dolphins got Karlos Dansby who is an upgrade at inside linebacker. The Dolphins locked up backup quarterback Chad Pennington. And they added by subtracting Joey Porter and Gibril Wilson.

But not all has gone according to plan.

The Dolphins have struggled to land a starting-caliber free safety because fate has not been kind. They put a certain value on Antrel Rolle and the New York Giants placed a higher value on him and got him. Value is defined here by cold, hard cash.)

They placed a higher value on Ryan Clark than his most recent team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, but Clark, a classy, solid dude, had other priorities he had to answer to. So Clark left Dolphins money on the table in order to return to the Steelers.

Some front offices might begin to panic. I trust the Dolphins will not, not with Bill Parcells at the helm.

On the surface, the situation looks uncomfortable if not dire.

A survey of the landscape shows the Dolphins have needs at too many positions to solve all those needs through the draft.

They need a starting OLB, a NT, a starting FS, and, of course, a playmaker at WR. Always a playmaker at WR.

So what to do?

While Cincinnati is hosting both Antonio Bryant and Terrell Owens this week, while Seattle is studying Brandon Marshall, after Baltimore traded for Anquan Boldin and Kansas City signed Chris Chambers, the Dolphins have done nothing.

I love Boldin -- a lot. But I cannot criticize the Dolphins for not moving on anyone left. It would be a sign of desperation for them to go after domestic batterer Marshall. Even if the move might be popular with fans and sell tickets, it would be a huge risk.

Owens will be 36 years old. He's better than any wide receiver the Dolphins currently have, no question. But did I mention he'll be 36 years old? And he has a history that rubs Parcells the wrong way. So is the Big Tuna going to basically cast off everything he believes in and chase this player? That would be a sign of desperation.

Bryant? He has had issues with his knees. His career byline is one of inconsistency and wearing out his coaches and his welcome. He also apparently would like a nice payday.

So maybe, just maybe, the Dolphins would best be served by sitting this one out if they have a plan. (God, please let them have a plan!)

The safety position is equally troubling because the Dolphins don't have a starter at the position. By their chase of both Rolle and Clark, the Dolphins have told everyone they don't think Chris Clemons is ready to be a starter and might never be. Remember, they offered those guys multi-year deals so the team was comfortable with Clemons not starting at FS for some time.

The problem is that the free agent options are running out. Darren Sharper is very, very, very productive but also older than Miami typically likes. He's also coming off knee surgery and reportedly isn't taking trips. O.J. Atogwe continues to be out there, but as of this writing, no contact from the Dolphins.

The Dolpins obviously didn't want to draft for this position. They might need to unless they can uncover a double-secret starting FS no one is aware of.

And then there are the other issues the Dolphins haven't even attempted to address in free agency: The team needs at least one starting outside linebacker, but DeMarcus Ware isn't available. They need a nose tackle but Vince Wilfork re-signed with New England. The Dolphins are a team in much need.

So why am I not crying "The Sky is falling" from my house top?

Two years ago, as the Steelers and Cards were preparing for a Super Bowl year, neither team signed a free agent early on. Last year at this team, neither the Colts nor the Saints signed a free agent early on.

Free agency is less than a week old. It is not Labor Day yet. The draft will plug some of these holes. And since this front office doesn't typically show desperation, neither will I. At least not yet. It is way too early for that.

lol alright fair enough.

Where's mr 1 2 4 from last night?

I am going to say something crazy... I will be really upset if the fins sign a big FA WR OR spend a 1st round pick on bryant. Allow our young, talented WR's to develop. We havent even seen Patrick Turner in action! If by the 3rd or fourth game of the season, we find we really need help at WR, then go for one, make a trade. And just to throw some spice into the conversation... McClain is waaaaaaaaayyyyyyy overrated. Not worth a 1st round pick. Maybe a second.... Maybe.

TO caught 55 passes at 15 yards per last year with a combination Fitzpatrick and Edwards throwing the ball in Buffalo. Not a pass friendly environment and neither of those guys had a qb rating over 73. And I know he's 36 but the guy has always stayed in superior shape. I've never been a fan of his, but I think this is a deal we should make. 1 year at 3 million. Pull the trigger, Tuna!

One thing on Mike Nolan. Yes his style Is more attack than react but, the Dolphins don't have the personnel right now to match that. They don't even have a starting caliber NT or Safety. Those positions are very important to his style and most likely will be manned by a rookie or second year, unproven players. Sounds Scary If you ask me.

Armando,

This is not really Dolphins related, but why can't the Chief of Police in Milledgeville, Ga pronounce "Rothlesberger" or even "Milledgeville" the town where he lives and is in fact chief of police?

LMAO! "Ben Rodenburgen" LOLOLOLOLOL

I cant understand why we have'nt inquired about Atogwe. The guy is quality. He's had 19 interceptions in 5 years, plenty of Forced Fumbles and he's only 28.

I think the guy is seriously underrated because he plays for a bad Rams team but if he were to play in Miami,in Nolans system,he could be tremendous

Mark,

It's not just the Dolphins. Noone has looked into it. Two things come to mind, he's coming off an injury, and the Rams are likely to match any offer anyway.

I'm not panicking over some of the holes we still have. Clark would have been good but I don't think he's the be-all and end-all. Who knows what happened there....move on!! I still like the kid from the Rams but I wonder how hurt he is. Not sure what the Rams would do if we signed him to an offer sheet. I think worst case scenario we go with Clemons and Culver next year...I don't think it would be a total disaster!!

WR is still VERY much up in the air!! We HAVE to get better there. I'm thinking worst case scenario we sign Owens for a year while some of the younger guys develop. Maybe we draft someone like Thomas in the second round.

I just feel signing Dansby takes a lot of pressure of this regime and gives them the flexibility to be smart.

Those teams were better than the Dolphins were before the offseason started. No comparison.
People keep talking about, "That's not how Bill Parcells does things". I don't care how he does things. If he has an alternative, fine. But if the team needs a legitimate receiver and safety, and they are out there, Parcells better get over himself and sign them or have a plan to fill those holes with people just as good.

With taking Dansby, the path is clear for jimmy graham. It's all about da U!

Yitz,

Saints were 8-8 and last in the division last year before their super bowl run. BAM!

Yesssss! Sarasota Cane in the house!

This is how I currently see the Fins, the question marks indicate positions that I think need to be addressed either through FA or Draft. I say they at least look at Marshall, yes he has baggage but at worst it's a proven baggage. The guy's numbers speak for themselves. In the draft I say we chose in this order unless something changes from here till draft day. NT,FS,LB,TE,OL,DL,WR

Offense:
OL-Long,Smiley,?,Berger,Thomas,Carey,Garner,?
WR-?,Hartline,Camarillo,Bess
TE-Fasano,Haynos
RB-Brown,Williams,Hilliard
QB-Henne,Penny,Thigpen

Defense:
DL-Langford,?,?,Starks
LB-Taylor,Crowder,Dansby,?,Wake
CB-Smith,Davis,Allen,?
FS-?,?
SS-Bell,Clemons

Special Teams
KR/PR-Ginn Jr.
K-Carpenter
P-Fields

Too bad about Rolle. Too bad about Clark. So, what's next? RFA, draft or wait for castoffs later in the season? Hope Parcells has something up his sleeve, sorry ass FS play hurt us last year.

WFV - I agree with the PLUNGIE nomination. I can't believe someone said "Parcells has always been a great motivator but never a good talent evaluator."

Wow, Armando is sure changing his tune.

Frank Sanders was one of the best safeties out there (colts, they have Beithia now). If he is healed from his injuries how about trading 2nd or 3rd for him or maybe Will Allen or Merling or both - he's that good, was just like Ed Reed and Palomla. A great talent a difference maker on def. Spiller is a great pick - trade brown if possible pus another pick or 2 - a future 2 or 3 and get Marshall. Trade Gin (get 2nd or 3rd back from Sanders trade) - Spiller can replace him on kickoffs

These are my thoughts...let me know what you think?

Safety: Offer a reasonable trade for Bethea from the Colts !

DT/NT: Sign the newly release Jamal Williams formally of the SD Chargers !

OLB: Look to draft 1 in the second round !

WR: Draft Dez Bryant with the #12 pick !

Notes: If Bryant is gone in the draft maybe we can go for Taylor Mays out of USC to fill the void @ safety & offer next years 1st round pick to Denver for Brandon Marshall !

Rob in OC is a mister Rogers version of NJ Phin Fan. Argues to the point of ridiculousness. Won't let things go. Is NEVER wrong even though he says he can be wrong. And has started tooting his own horn. beep...beep

Have you ever seen a lamp post argue with a nearby wall? you move! no,you move! no,you move! You're a lamp post! You're a wall!! You're a towel!!

Guys, Iam sure more stupid stuff will be posted today so lets wait before we give a guy a "Plungie" this early...(Though his is the best so far)

MIAMISTUD24,

The Colts want our 1st rounder for Bethea so that is'nt gonna happen.

Jamal Williams is alittle too old

OLB is a strong possibility in the 1st

Forget Dez Bryant (Too much of a headache)

Forget Marshall (Too much of a diva)

Forget Mays (Aint good enough)

To whom this may concern,

Im tired of hearing speculations on what the Dolphins should do to upgrade their roster and eventually make the playoffs and SB. B. Marshall? R. Clark? O.J. Atogwe? S. Rodgers? A. Bryant? T.O.? D. Sharper?
Lots of good players and no action by the Dolphins.
I personally think people should just wait and see what happens. No matter what the speculation is, the results are always negative for the DolphANS, except for Karlos Dansby. I believe they have a plan (they better). The trifecta stated that the Dolphins will be a contender after three years of their work. Well, so far so average. 11-5 season? Well, when you have an average team playing against mostly bad teams, anyone's season would be a success. Then 7-9 with the hardest schedule in the league? For me, thats an improvement. Not an improvement on their record but an improvement on their roster and chemistry. The Dolphins are not where they want to be right now but hopefully the trifecta will pull the trigger on a player that brings more to the table than just a mediocre G. Wilson, W. Wilford and E. Green.
Another thing, DolphANS should stop worring about bringing a #1 WR like B. Marshall through a trade or free agency. The past few drafts, teams have found their #1 WR, and I believe the Dolphins can find theirs this upcoming draft. I haven't seen so many talents at the WR position in a while. That was just a few thoughts I wanted to share.

From a fellow fan

By ESPN Gregg Easterbrook's Immutable Law of Composure: "No need to panic now, there'll be plenty of time for that later"....just brilliant....that's a great read, check it out during football season guys...

I wasnt crowning him just giving nominations and if i may i believe that phinphanmt and MIAMISTUD24 could also be solid early nominations.

phinphanmt, Do you mean Demond 'Bob' Sanders?

And yes, way too early to hand out the award, as some potential winners aren't even awake yet!

LOL perennial powerhouse fishypete

Right! We do not need to panic. We can always make trades.

In regards to WR I am not as concerned as Mando. Why? 1) I expect Turner, Hartline, and Camarillo (given they are not dealt away or cut) to all be MUCH improved from the 2009 campaign. That alone will be a nice plus. If we bring in one more guy that is fine too.

I think we should not go after this Ram FS. We are not desperate. Also, I thought Wilson played much better the second half of the season. Wilson is gone (for now) but we also have Clemons, Culver, Jason Allen, and even Sean Smith (if we went this route we could re-insert Will Allen as the other starting cb)

My concern is the nose tackle position. That would be my #1 priority if I were the GM or someone like that.

PEOPLE OF DOLPHINS NATION--- Very deep nose tackle draft do not be afraid.

I love the idiot that just posted saying that Camarillo will be better assuming he's not traded.

Really?

So on one hand you admit he isn't good enough to be a keeper and on the other hand you believe he's going to be good.

Guys, our WR corps stinks. With all due respect Mando, IT IS TIME TO PANIC!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGrqW3nx5HM

I can say that I don't see Parcells and Ireland going after WR in Rd #1. We all know that it's very rare for the Tuna to take a WR in the 1st. I would like to see OLB Graham from Michigan be taken by Miami @ #12. He showed alot of promise at the Senior: 2 sacks, 3 tackles, and plenty of pressure on the QB's. I think the kid from UGA- DT Geno Atkins would probably be able to play the NT in the Phins 3-4 scheme. Graham is a very fast and explosive OLB and just think bout how much better he'd become with a year of tutelage under new DC Mike Nolan and LB's coach Bill Sheridan, and not to mention what he could learn from Jason Taylor. I would really like to see Graham end up in Miami.

I second that WVA...but not too deep, lol.

finheaven other than the fact that YOU think our wr stink... why is it time to panic.

Sorry Armando, but you are showing your football knowledge with this one. The Dolphins staff LOVES Clemons, but he is the only FS we have right now. So are you suggesting the if they did believe in him they would go into the regular starting season with him as the only FS? What happened to the motto "Competition always brings the best out of us"? They offer multi-year contracts due to the fact that NO free safety under the age of 34 will sign a contract for only one year.

deep enough, dont quote me on this but from what i can tell every team that needs a NT has one. I just dont think NT is that position that is cut throat in the draft where people will give up picks and move and shake around to get their guy. Just my opinion. Does that make sense??? I just dont see the NT position and need from other teams where all the guys we like will not be available.

Aside from getting an elite non-diva #1 wr, I think the next best thing to improve the WR play is the improvement of Henne. I think his extra experience with reads, etc. can help him make the higher percentage play. I can remember a few times when the receivers got the separation needed, but Henne couldn't hit them. I love Henne, but he is young and will only improve.

This is a team game - so every player involved in a play has an impact on the outcome, even if minor.

I have decided that it is never too early to panic.

So I shall.

I am not panicking because i said many many many times that if we signed Dansby that would be the end of our FA period. We are not going to do much more other than add depth at very low cost. The big three like the draft so they are planning on using it and not going after every player available just because you people have heard there name before.

LipsinToronto - I agree with you on the Chad Henne part. As he improves in his second year our current WR group will as well. I am not sayign they are going to be great, but I do not feel we are absolutely terrible at the position. We just need the young WR's to keep stepping up and improving with our young QB. If they don't they can HIT the road!!

agreed with lips and indiana

WestVaFins - You mentioned we would of quit in FA if we got Dansby, but there are not many options out there also. Not everything can be fixed via FA. Maybe the front office has plans of something else or taking a gamble not going after more FA's from the slim pool of FA's???

Is this blog or barn yard?

I like the way Miami has handled free agency so far. They made a splash and shelled out big money for the best LB in FA. Dansby is a great signing that will upgrade Miami's LB core. He will allow Crowder to be the run stopper while he is the side line to side line presence needed.

As far as not getting a FS you can't fault the Dolphins. They offered Rolle a fair deal to play "at home" for him and he went for money in NY. I personally didn't want Rolle. We would have been a big disappointment. Another big money FS (Gibril Wilson's in 2009) with small production. As far as Clark he used Miami to find his worth, he reported that back to the Steelers and even if he could get 80% of that it was worth it. He didn't have to move his family, sell his home etc. There is still Sharper and Otogwe out there. Sharper is coming off surgery and is old for a safety. Otogwe is younger but also is coming off the IR. So this position may not get filled through FA.

Miami may move onto another position of need to add more flexability come draft time. They could pursue Jamal Williams (NT, San Diego)and pair and rotate him with Solia. It would erase the need for a NT and Miami could then focus on the best player available at the positions of need OLB, WR, FS. That gives them option of picking Kindle or Graham, Dez Bryant or Earl Thomas.

Just my thoughts.

im not sure what your saying differently indiana lol if we got Dansby then we were pretty much finished and if not we would have had to go another route to try and get one signature player via FA.

This is crap. How can you guys B satisfied Dansby is ok but not even on our top 3 priorities. We need a safety who can play a nickel corner a NT, OLB, WR. We lost our best secondary players to Denver!!!!!!!!!!! We are going to get slaughtered in the secondary and the when we face the 2010 jets with the 2009 dolphins parcells eat a dick!

There is no way our receiving core is even best half of the league, but it takes two to dance.

I mean look at what Favre was able to do with a rookie in Minnesota or what Manning did in Indy..

I would also like to see Henne get more fired up when he plays. Rip Ginn a new one for turtling.. or let Bess, Camarillo, Hartline or Turner hear it when they didn't make the right read..

I think a lot of that comes with confidence. He is very confident he can make plays, and he can, but I never felt him really seizing control of the hundle and barking out orders like Dan used to do. Even when Dan messed up and was responsible for an INT, he yelled at the receiver first for not breaking up the play!

I hope we see some of that Fire from Henne. If he gets some of that, he will be special, as he has the phycial tools and the ability to remain calm under pressure..

"It's to early to panic" lets see what other great people uttered those exact words At #1 capt George smith(Capt of the Titanic)#2George S. Custer, #3Ted Bundy (2 minutes before he was strapped into "Ole Sparky" #4 NJ PHIN FAN , upon hearing that miami's 1st draft pick 4 years ago was Ted Ginn and his entire family,#5Po white trash when he saw the flashing lights of a highway patrol troopers after consuming 12 Budweiser beers, #6 Carlito from Golfito, When the INS came to his door last sept 14th 10 minutes before the kick off of the Atlanta-Miami game,#7 when my dad found out that his condom broke 9 months before I was born... so there you have it, great and not so great people that have uttered those famous words.....
