Five days into free agency is no time to panic

Unrestricted free agency started as a sprint over the weekend when many NFL teams jockeyed for position to immediately land their prize targets or re-sign their best players.

The Dolphins got Karlos Dansby who is an upgrade at inside linebacker. The Dolphins locked up backup quarterback Chad Pennington. And they added by subtracting Joey Porter and Gibril Wilson.

But not all has gone according to plan.

The Dolphins have struggled to land a starting-caliber free safety because fate has not been kind. They put a certain value on Antrel Rolle and the New York Giants placed a higher value on him and got him. Value is defined here by cold, hard cash.)

They placed a higher value on Ryan Clark than his most recent team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, but Clark, a classy, solid dude, had other priorities he had to answer to. So Clark left Dolphins money on the table in order to return to the Steelers.

Some front offices might begin to panic. I trust the Dolphins will not, not with Bill Parcells at the helm.

On the surface, the situation looks uncomfortable if not dire.

A survey of the landscape shows the Dolphins have needs at too many positions to solve all those needs through the draft.

They need a starting OLB, a NT, a starting FS, and, of course, a playmaker at WR. Always a playmaker at WR.

So what to do?

While Cincinnati is hosting both Antonio Bryant and Terrell Owens this week, while Seattle is studying Brandon Marshall, after Baltimore traded for Anquan Boldin and Kansas City signed Chris Chambers, the Dolphins have done nothing.

I love Boldin -- a lot. But I cannot criticize the Dolphins for not moving on anyone left. It would be a sign of desperation for them to go after domestic batterer Marshall. Even if the move might be popular with fans and sell tickets, it would be a huge risk.

Owens will be 36 years old. He's better than any wide receiver the Dolphins currently have, no question. But did I mention he'll be 36 years old? And he has a history that rubs Parcells the wrong way. So is the Big Tuna going to basically cast off everything he believes in and chase this player? That would be a sign of desperation.

Bryant? He has had issues with his knees. His career byline is one of inconsistency and wearing out his coaches and his welcome. He also apparently would like a nice payday.

So maybe, just maybe, the Dolphins would best be served by sitting this one out if they have a plan. (God, please let them have a plan!)

The safety position is equally troubling because the Dolphins don't have a starter at the position. By their chase of both Rolle and Clark, the Dolphins have told everyone they don't think Chris Clemons is ready to be a starter and might never be. Remember, they offered those guys multi-year deals so the team was comfortable with Clemons not starting at FS for some time.

The problem is that the free agent options are running out. Darren Sharper is very, very, very productive but also older than Miami typically likes. He's also coming off knee surgery and reportedly isn't taking trips. O.J. Atogwe continues to be out there, but as of this writing, no contact from the Dolphins.

The Dolpins obviously didn't want to draft for this position. They might need to unless they can uncover a double-secret starting FS no one is aware of.

And then there are the other issues the Dolphins haven't even attempted to address in free agency: The team needs at least one starting outside linebacker, but DeMarcus Ware isn't available. They need a nose tackle but Vince Wilfork re-signed with New England. The Dolphins are a team in much need.

So why am I not crying "The Sky is falling" from my house top?

Two years ago, as the Steelers and Cards were preparing for a Super Bowl year, neither team signed a free agent early on. Last year at this team, neither the Colts nor the Saints signed a free agent early on.

Free agency is less than a week old. It is not Labor Day yet. The draft will plug some of these holes. And since this front office doesn't typically show desperation, neither will I. At least not yet. It is way too early for that.

So, Mando, if I am getting you right, they shouldn't go after a #1 WR? We know it doesn't happen in the draft. Are you really going to say that Marshall is a bad idea because he has a history of domestic violence? Look, people can change. He needs help but that doesn't mean that there wasn't another player in this. As a shrink I have seen plenty of personality disordered people before and his ex-girlfriend shows all the signs of a Borderline Personality Disorder. Look it up. They could drive a Saint to anger. Some that I have worked with have deliberately hurt themselves to send their spouses to jail. I am talking slamming their own heads against the wall, cutting themselves, etc. I am not saying Marshall is innocent here but that Watley could well have had much to do with it. You and I do not know.

Marshall is young, better than any WR out there except Andre Johnson and is available. It might not even take our first. Could be a lower pick and a player or two (there are so many scenarios that could play out here). For a PROVEN #1 WR. For many years to come. No draft pick is a sure thing. Marshall has proven he is. Load a new contract with behavior clauses and therapeutic requirements.

Not Fair boo..... you just cant post something that stupid, this Prestigious award is handed out to the totally clueless, and totally stupid posts... your post will not be submitted sir... thanks for stopping by though.

Sorry boontang. You have to be areal buffon and mean what you say.

WestVA, I was talking about a one year stop gap with Ferg while we develop the NT we draft. It's a rare NT that can come into the 3-4 defense and play right away straight out of college. We are going to be hurting at NT this year if Soliai is the only guy we have (barring a change in his play) even if we draft NT at 12.

So many fans are so gung ho about winning THIS year that it surprises me more isn't being made about the fact we seemingly have no viable option for NT THIS year.

Im sure somethign will be done Kong but im not concerned about Ferg. It could be him or it could be another guy that plays that role i dont think it makes much difference.

Darn. I didn't realize this award was so tough to get. I will just have to try harder. Are there any posters in particular that I could study there posts more closely so to know what I should aspire to be??

to be or not TO BE, THAT'S THE QUESTION .

FishyPete is really good to learn from boo.

Move Pat White to Defense to play FS and then Draft Tebow at 12 to replace White in the WildPat or WildBow!

Can I get the award now?

It cant be intentional its too easy to pick out the fakers.... lol

Jimmy Jam , are you going to blame marshall 's ex - girl for him acting like a jacka$$ kicking balls on the sideline like a freaking baby during a practice. How about blaming his ex-girl for him getting involved in a fight at at a club that got his teammate killed when marshall was the intended target ?? how about blaming his ex-girl for getting into a shoving match with his teammate K Moreno during a game ?? Gimme a break !!!

It would be called the WildTeabag TN...

or in tebows case the Dbag haha

Or maybe we could enhance the Wildcat and find a way to get all 4 QBs on the field at the same time.... Think about it- the D would never know who was going to throw the ball to our one receiver!

Trade 1st, 2nd, and 3rd to Denver for their 1st and Brandon Marshall.

Draft Dez Bryant.

Talking Super Bowl.

We could call the Tbow package the TEA Party

TN, this wildcat with all 4 QBs would take advantage of Pennington's underrated deep speed.

I think tallerguy is a new name for someone trying for the Plungie so to disguise...

Deep speed**

New option for new offseason wr Addition----Reports out of Dallas are that they might cut Roy williams---and draft a wr

Now be4 you jump on this and say he is not good ----look at his stats---15yd ave catch--40 receptions, 600yds, 7 tds last year--he is 28 and healthy and in some years in detroit was a true #1 wr---

If he is cut we could add him asan unrestricted FA---and not have to use a draft pick to sign him and allows us to not focus a high pick on a wr in the draft---at 6"3 215 with his full body of work resume in this league he would instantly be our best X wr---

I was a big fan of his in Texas---I would try to sign him if he gets cut

Also some reports that Sharper is on his way to make trips somewhere---hopefully South beach is one......

Boo, It's extremely hard to win this particular and prestigious award, First you must be Semi-clueless,second you have to post something so preposterous that a non intoxicated person would never say, so if you can do any of these things maybe a "PLUNGIE" is in your future, though I dought it, your posts are usually not insane, but you never know, drink a bottle of your favorite alcohol and give it a shot..... good luck my friend....

How would you align the 4 qb wildcat?

Thigpen in Ronnie
Pat White Lined in Rickey Spot
Thigpen Tight End
Henne spread Left

Anyone going to Doral this weekend?

i think the issue with Roy williams is that he never should of had that interview and called himself athe cowboys #1 wr----"i actually loved what he said because physically and by what he has already accomplished in Detroit i would of said the same thing if i was him being compared to miles austin----

Problem is evry reporter and fan in this league has a mancrush on miles austin so he picked the wrong battle----his claim that romo wasnt accurate whn thrown him the ball was truthful but he shouldnt of said it i agree---

I think this guy doesnt have baggage he was just fustrated in dallas and could really help us at wr

Thanks for all the wishes and name ideas, lol.

Wouldn'T Pat white be unconscious on the side line???? Still?????

TN, I would have Ted Ginn get the snap. Beside him would be Thigpen. White at TE. Henne and Pennington out wide. In the slot, I would have Paul Soliai.

Roy Williams would actually be an interesting option as a UFA. Like you said, he's in his physical prime and no significant injuries and what he did in Detroit can't be ignored. He has comeback player potential.

Buy low, sell high!

If Roy Williams is cut I think the trifecta should definatley checknit out. He wasn't happy in Dallas because he wasn't the big dawg reciever he thought he would be, but he'd be alright here

some more info on situation in Dallas

"Williams' tenure in Dallas has been an unmitigated disaster, with the Cowboys giving up far too much in terms of draft picks and cash to acquire and retain the former Texas star. At this point, he's the team's third receiver (behind Miles Austin and Jason Witten), and there's no reason to believe he's going to get much better. Williams is owed a guaranteed $9.5 million bonus this season, but if the Cowboys cut him, that bonus won't be applied to the cap over future seasons. They'll also save nearly $3.5 million in salary this year, a figure that will go up to nearly $33 million by the time his deal ends in 2014. How much do you think denial is worth to Jerry Jones?" - Bill Barnwell

Boot, that may work... I think I remember Ginn was a QB in HS. Ginn is so fast he could chunk a pass down field and catch it himself.

Where did you hear about Roy Williams rumor?

Big Ben gets convicted and Dolphins trade Thigpen for Clark.

No need to worry about FS

Big Ben better watch little Ben before he gets locked up

he would be a nice fit in miami----if he gets cut

Roy williams---if we could get those 2 on board--we are looking very flexible come draft day

Im still waiting on reports out of NE for them to cut ties with Adalius thomas--but i heard that belichick hates the guy so much for all the trash he talked about him not being a Jetson---"epic comment out of ADalius"--that he might hold on to him the whole offseason b/c it wont cost the pats anything and then dump in a week be4 the season starts so it will be uncomfortable for him to be signed by another team--

You all know those two teams would be dolphins or jets----
B/c he loves ryan and nolan---and he could stay in the division to play vs the pats---

jets have upperhand with him being best friend with bart scott
but b/c they went to afc championship they cant offer him a better size contract then we can---and this could be the last contract he recieves at 32----so i think we actually would be the front runners for him----

The main play out of my formation is the Jet Sweep to Soliai, with White and Ginn as lead blockers.

espn.com has the roy williams rumor---but a lot of dallas media outlets have been talking about this realesing of roy williams for a while----

This might be right up our alley. Let him go Jerry

Not true tenn, before he'd catch the ball either A) he'd fall down in a fetal position...B)drop the ball..C)be out of balance..C)Bobble the ball resulting in a interception ALA new orleans game or ..D)trip over his own two feet and look for a flag while the referee laughs hysterically.......

I think we make a push for Antonio Bryant, draft Pierre and then get another wide out in the draft. Offense was not our problem last year! We scored over 23 points per game!!

Actually it is time to panic, as we suck at drafting and even if we didn't as mando is clearly doing (without even noticing he's doing it
I guess) we are talking ourselves out of every free agent out there in our positions of need that are worth a damn. Sharpers great but he's too old, TO is the same, Bryant and Marshall have issues...blah blah STOP. Grab a couple of them up and let's go to the playoffs!!

That's right on Cuban

Roy Williams likes to get hit about as much as Ted Ginn. It would be perfect. Imagine they could show each other who's better at running otb, or trade technique at falling down before the first down marker. They could be the best of pals.

What would they call they play Boot...

the cannonball run?

ESPN is reporting that Dallas is on the verge of cutting Roy Williams WR loose...27 years old, injured most of last year but now deemed healthy, opinions???

Cuban, good to see you got all your Ginn talking points in for the day.

See I'm a little late with that sorry!

Easy Dreaded, your comment might get you a "PLUNGIE".....

If Ginn could pass the ball to himself, I'd be impressed. The only guy I ever saw pull that off on a long pass was Mr. Perfect Curt Henning back in his old WWF vignettes co starring Steve Jordan, TE, Minnesota Vikings.

I believe it would be called 'snail sweep'

Thing is we'd have to call Soliai in motion with like 17 seconds left on the play clock.

Ohh wow Marshall has an attitude problem? He's a rich supertalented black guy, I'd swagger too much too! The point is, u picky losers, is that he puts up 1k plus a year in yards and would get us to the playoffs at least. So....ummm, stop, maybe?

Adalius thomas is washed up . If he gets cut the jets can offer whatever they want over the phins. Thomas is not a unrestricted or restricted free agent where the 8 payoff team rules apply. He'd be availible to anybody because he was released . Williams stinks !!

Ohh and those of u talking sharpers age, he had more picks than all of our secondary combined while smith is crying 'i just want 1! Why couldn't I have been given 1?!'

LOL at Darryl....

I wouldn't doubt the Dolphins go after Williams..he's cheap and a non factor...sounds about right.

Inismounts, why aren't all these other teams all over Marshall?? He is such a headache that only Seatlle and Cincy have showed minor interest, no one wants his problems

Vince wilfork is too fat, Williams and Marshall and TO are too diva, sharper is too old, who else? Let's name some more probowlers that we don't want on this team. Seriously.

Did cincy win their division? I'm just curious. And I'm gonna have a little faith in the way the seahawks are running things now.
