Five days into free agency is no time to panic

Unrestricted free agency started as a sprint over the weekend when many NFL teams jockeyed for position to immediately land their prize targets or re-sign their best players.

The Dolphins got Karlos Dansby who is an upgrade at inside linebacker. The Dolphins locked up backup quarterback Chad Pennington. And they added by subtracting Joey Porter and Gibril Wilson.

But not all has gone according to plan.

The Dolphins have struggled to land a starting-caliber free safety because fate has not been kind. They put a certain value on Antrel Rolle and the New York Giants placed a higher value on him and got him. Value is defined here by cold, hard cash.)

They placed a higher value on Ryan Clark than his most recent team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, but Clark, a classy, solid dude, had other priorities he had to answer to. So Clark left Dolphins money on the table in order to return to the Steelers.

Some front offices might begin to panic. I trust the Dolphins will not, not with Bill Parcells at the helm.

On the surface, the situation looks uncomfortable if not dire.

A survey of the landscape shows the Dolphins have needs at too many positions to solve all those needs through the draft.

They need a starting OLB, a NT, a starting FS, and, of course, a playmaker at WR. Always a playmaker at WR.

So what to do?

While Cincinnati is hosting both Antonio Bryant and Terrell Owens this week, while Seattle is studying Brandon Marshall, after Baltimore traded for Anquan Boldin and Kansas City signed Chris Chambers, the Dolphins have done nothing.

I love Boldin -- a lot. But I cannot criticize the Dolphins for not moving on anyone left. It would be a sign of desperation for them to go after domestic batterer Marshall. Even if the move might be popular with fans and sell tickets, it would be a huge risk.

Owens will be 36 years old. He's better than any wide receiver the Dolphins currently have, no question. But did I mention he'll be 36 years old? And he has a history that rubs Parcells the wrong way. So is the Big Tuna going to basically cast off everything he believes in and chase this player? That would be a sign of desperation.

Bryant? He has had issues with his knees. His career byline is one of inconsistency and wearing out his coaches and his welcome. He also apparently would like a nice payday.

So maybe, just maybe, the Dolphins would best be served by sitting this one out if they have a plan. (God, please let them have a plan!)

The safety position is equally troubling because the Dolphins don't have a starter at the position. By their chase of both Rolle and Clark, the Dolphins have told everyone they don't think Chris Clemons is ready to be a starter and might never be. Remember, they offered those guys multi-year deals so the team was comfortable with Clemons not starting at FS for some time.

The problem is that the free agent options are running out. Darren Sharper is very, very, very productive but also older than Miami typically likes. He's also coming off knee surgery and reportedly isn't taking trips. O.J. Atogwe continues to be out there, but as of this writing, no contact from the Dolphins.

The Dolpins obviously didn't want to draft for this position. They might need to unless they can uncover a double-secret starting FS no one is aware of.

And then there are the other issues the Dolphins haven't even attempted to address in free agency: The team needs at least one starting outside linebacker, but DeMarcus Ware isn't available. They need a nose tackle but Vince Wilfork re-signed with New England. The Dolphins are a team in much need.

So why am I not crying "The Sky is falling" from my house top?

Two years ago, as the Steelers and Cards were preparing for a Super Bowl year, neither team signed a free agent early on. Last year at this team, neither the Colts nor the Saints signed a free agent early on.

Free agency is less than a week old. It is not Labor Day yet. The draft will plug some of these holes. And since this front office doesn't typically show desperation, neither will I. At least not yet. It is way too early for that.

Dez Bryant is not going to participate in Pro Day. Another shock

Just how many teams other than the Dolphins should be looking at Marshall? The reason is obvious, they are looking for a fire sale.

Inimounts, how many times gave Marshalls stats got Denver to the playoffs? ZERO

NJ - I didn't excuse Marshall's actions. Nor did I blame his ex for all of his nefarious activities. Mando is the one who called him out on the domestic violence issue. I simply addressed that. I am a psychotherapist with many years of experience with Borderline PDs. Do not tread in an area where you have no expertise. Stay with the draft stuff and I'll listen to you because you have more knowledge than I do and I appreciate what you have to offer. However, enter the psychological arena and I will tear you to shreds.

Marshall is not all that the media or his actions make him out to be.

He is also a fine receiver and the best available and would make this team into an instant contender (7 TDs last season. The fins lost four games by a TD or less).

Seriously is this ever going to stop? Look what Brandon Marshall does every year. Now look at what our receiving core did last year. Seriously go to espn and look at the numbers. Then get a puke bucket. No, get the bucket first.

Mark, dude, he's one player. It's about production. Ud rather have nothing than Marshall, a pro bowler. Because if we don't trade for him...that's what we will have. And I can't believe I'm arguing with this complete stupidity. Go be a jets fan if u don't want Marshall.

Actually...I believe Marshall is broke...no doubt his loving wife helped him out there and he needs to sign a contract...so he'll be a lot easier to sign.

Some of you will never be happy with anyone. You have something against every person available or not available.

Roy Williams?

Excuse me, I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Listen, I heard the best explanation from an NFL guy on the radio the other day..." Parcells is the boss, the boss can hire who he wants within the law. Bill Parcells does not like Brandon Marshall and will not "hire him" End of story.....Why even talk about this, Parcells is not interested and he is the BOSS

Williams at his worst (i.e. how he performed for Dallas in a system he never got comfortable in) - his stats would still make him our #1 receiver.

At his best (like he was in Dallas), he is a 1,000 yard and 7,8 TD receiver.

As long as the contract isn't ridiculous, I think it's worth the gamble. He is still young enough to be worked out. A lot of people wrote Cedric Benson off too ....

Bottom line: I want Marshall, t.o., sharper, Williams, cribbs, Bryant, I want ANY of these guys that will improve us at the position they at. And they all will, and that's what it comes down to. Not all this nitpicking about bull*%* that has us watching new England grab them up and win the conference next year!

So inimounts i cant be a dolphins fan because i dont want brandon marshall on the team????

Inismounts, why aren't all these other teams all over Marshall?? He is such a headache that only Seatlle and Cincy have showed minor interest, no one wants his problems

Guys Brandon Marshalls future is in the great North west, like I said yesterday that's where all serial killers hail from, it's only a matter of time before he kills one of his B2tches anyway chances are good he'll also pick up a couple hookers too and "86" them too......chances are good that the reason why Seattle hasnt taken him is because the Spokane PD wont let him into the city.....

I dont agree with adalius thomas being washed up---i think he needs to be in an agressive scheme like he was in baltimore ---which Nolan will allow him to be in--

Second---i think a lot of guys go to NE and dont produce b/c bellicick is too conservative on defense---

But the real reason i like him other then he is verstaile in a 3-4 and can be aligned everywhere at 6"2 270---

Is that his main asset is his abilty to cover---where in baltimore they lined him up at corner or safety in certain packages---guys like this are hard to find and i think at 32 he has at least another 2 good years in him---

Roy williams doesnt stink---be mature---you might not like him---

But if we can sign him at a decent price he will be a very good addition for us if he is cut

Truefan....THANK YOU. it's crazy right?

What did Ginn and J. Allen do to get the Dolphins to the playoff's.

BRANDON MARSHALL IS A DOLPHIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You heard on the radio that Parcells is the boss...who was speaking?

U can not like marsh , westva, but all of this bashing of probowlers that would help our team...wait, I take that back, if u don't want Marshall but u were happy when we signed Joey porter, then yeah, u can't be a fin fan. Turn in ur pass.

i dont think NE has any of those players and i dont think they are getting any of those players. You really want all those players??? well i want AP and Manning and Andre and Desean Jackson... ya get it???? NEW NOMINATION FOR PLUNGIE!!!!!!!!!!!

Inimounts, you go be a Jets fan!!!! How dare you say something like that to me???

Stats are one thing however his own coach didn't even want him around his team in a must win scenario. What does that tell you about him as a person?

And I remember a mediocre Dolphins defense shutting Marshall down in his own stadium last time they played. Who needs him?

Ginn helped the saints Win the superbowl. That can't be contested :)

Lol mark, marshalls awful isn't he?!?!

I don't want him. I LOVE having the worst receiving core in the league.

I dont think a difference of opinion is a reason to not be a fan.

Ur an idiot westva. Go sleep wife ur wife (sister). My point was they have playmakers. We don't. And u don't want the only ones left in free agency. Who do u want then?

I believe inimounts should no longer get to be a fan...

I believe westva is copying exactly what I just told him.

the whole sharper being old--is a mute argument---he is a ball hawk game changer ---and honestly if he only has 1 or two years left whats wrong with that---That would be the best Stop gap addition i have ever heard of----allows the young backup safties to mature and not be thrown into action early---and if we need to draft a safety there is no rush do draft one this year if we sign sharper----

To me its a no brainer, b/c clearly the dolphins want a veteran safety b/c clark isnt even that good---and they wanted him---its unbelievable how the media spins sharper durabilty saying that he has only played all 16 games in a season for half of the seasons he played in---look at his stats the guy usually always plays 13 to 14 gmes---4 games missed over last 4 or 5 season---stop the madness---he would be a great addition

your an idiot Marshall isnt a free agent haha. And i dont sleep with my sister and wife i sleep with your sister and wife. unless they are ugly which is the case most likely i make them go down on me.

I sure love to hear what the same fans that don't want Marshall....what would they say IF Parcells got a brain and traded for him. Would you stop supporting the Dolphins...or would you support the team and Marshall?

we signed a top tier free agent to a big contract at a position of need what else could you want this early on in the FA period.

It's all a moot argument, Allen. Not every player is perfect, but all of the players we've talked about would be an upgrade. And don't tell me parcells wouldn't do it, until porter wanted out he liked him and he is the biggest ass in the NFL.

Actually fishypete, great that you asked that question. I'm not a big fan of either Allen or Ginn and in fact neither of them were picked by this administration.

However, as much as I don't care for those 2 players, Ginn was clutch during the 2008 playoff drive for the team. He was the only guy on offense doing anything in KC when the rest of the offense was sleeping.

2nd, in the must win game against Favre and the Jets, he came up with a beauty of a long TD bomb catch that put the Jets on the ropes.

At this same time, marshall and the broncs were in the midst of blowing a 4 game lead with 4 games remaining against SD.

So one can even argue that a bust of a 1st round pick, 4th WR on the Dolphins did more to get a team in the playoffs than that puke Marshall ever did.

U know who's from west virginia? Pat white. Case closed. I win lol

be back in twenty going to bang Inimounts wife.

Yea buddy!!

Jimmy Jam. You will tear me to shreds in the psychological arena ??? Really ?? Don't tread in a area i have no expertise in ?? LMFAO !!! Who gives a shyt about the psychological arena on here and who said i have expertise on that matter . What are you trying to prove ?? Last I heard this was a football blog. Any person not having a " psyhological expertise " can see marshall has anger and mental issues. I'm sure i can tear you to shreds in my arena and my field of expertise. What does this have to do with maeshall being a PR*CK ?? LOL !!

EVERYONE! MARK LIKES GINN. seriously. How can u be a fin fan and put 'ginn' and 'clutch' in the same sentence?

Again, Parcells WILL not sign Marshall..What a waste of time segueing about something that WONT happen

Browns terminated QB Derek Anderson's contract, I say we sign him and run the 5 QB Wildcat!

your an idiot pat white isnt from wv he played football here. you truly are a fool. oh and you dont wanna bring up what he did in college because then it makes you look worse.

If u last twenty with my wife and don't hurl I'll buy u a beer :)

Listening to Charles Davis of NFLN with the Big O - says Derrick Morgan would be a solid pick at #12 and thinks can handle the switch to OLB.

Also talking about Dez - says that the talent might be too great to pass up on - compares him to Michael Irvin. Still don't think we take Dez - but would be happy with Morgan.

I knew u were going to say that westv. So I answer: 'he was a great thrower and player and with just four years in wv he could now spend a whole year in the NFL play every game and not ompletely a pass

back in twenty do some research while im gone...

not everyone is bidding on marshall b/c most teams arent a domiante wr away from being a great offense----we are---say what you will we were a middle of the pack offense last year---because of the creativity of the staff and henning---

If we get anyhting out of pat white and ronnie is healthy---we ran on teams last year and they had 9 in the box---with marshall they are going to have 7 in the box---and bess will go to work in the middle of the field---our offense will be scary---

Alot of teams dont have a QB, RB, and most commonly have issue at oline---say what you want about henne i thought he played great last year---he had no weapon at TE--- and no deep threat at wr---plus ronnie went down----and the defense wasnt playing welll---

I dont think marshall is the only soloution to our problem but i would bring him in for a visit

Bobby, he might. Parcells knows he's not going to be cometely happy with everyone, but he's a winner. Not to mention he told us a while back he was done with Jason Taylor

Davis doesn't think Dez is necessarily a bad kid - just had a rough upbringing and most (if not all) great WRs are a little crazy.....

Great Responce Inimounts....

Are you talking about last year? Do you blame Marshall because they got rid of Cutler and used Orton? In just 15 games 13 statrts Marshall acquired over 1000 yds...look at his stats as a Bronco;

•A fourth-year player who has developed into one of the NFL’s most productive wide receivers, totaling the second-most receptions (206) and the third-most receiving yards (2,590) in the league during the last two years.
•Registered at least 100 catches and 1,200 receiving yards in each of the last two seasons as the only player in the NFL to accomplish that feat.
•Named to the Pro Bowl (starter) for the first time in his career in 2008 after ranking third in the NFL with 104 catches (1,265 yds., 6 TDs) that ranked second in Denver history for a season.
•Tied for the second-most receptions in a game in NFL history with a Broncos-record 18 catches for 166 yards with one touchdown vs. San Diego (9/14/08).
•Set an NFL record for catches in a five-game period with 55 (577 yds., 4 TDs) in a stretch with Denver from 2007-08.
•Totaled 601 of his 2,899 career receiving yards (20.7 percent) after initial contact with a defender according to Stats Inc., including an NFL-high 319 yards after contact in 2007.
•Owns seven 100-yard receiving efforts and six 10-catch outings for his career.
•Recorded 102 receptions in 2007 that marked the third-highest total by a second-year player in NFL history while posting the third-most receiving yards (1,325) for a season in Denver annals.
•Posted the second-most receiving yards (1,195) for a season in University of Central Florida history as a senior en route to earning second-team All-Conference USA honors.
•Selected by the Broncos in the fourth round (119th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft.

And you seriously wouldn't want him on your team?

All joking aside though, it's not that I'm in love with Marshall....I just want another receiver so bad for the dolphins, I think it would really open doors, AND Chad henne would break through. Has anyone
Heard anything about laverneus coles?

It has to do with the personal attack you launched on me, NJ. It also has to do with you trying to negate what I was saying on one very specific issue. Mando said he doesn't want Marshall because of his DV record. That's what I addressed. I didn't say the guy is a sweetheart and doesn't have character issues. I only argued the one point. You take that as me giving the guy a clean slate? No way would I do that. You cannot take a specific and make a generalization about it. Mando brought the psych perspective into it because he questioned a specific behavior. Behavior is the realm of psychology.

back to football and filling a desperate need: I think the issues can be addressed and that his talent is worth the risk.

Inimounts, I said that I don't care for Ginn but I'm saying that even a player so insignificant as him did more to help a team make the playoffs than Marshall did. If you can't read than get someone to read it to you.

I'm done arguing this point with you. Marshall's a punk that's never done anything to help Denver win. I'd never give up the 12th pick in a draft for him. Whoever the admnisitration picks at 12 will be a better player than him - guaranteed.

Fishypete said it all. I think the highest one of our receivers had this year wa like 600. Marshall would double that. And guys, we aren't even talking about the double teams that would free our other mediocre receivers lol
