Void at free safety? Dolphins to look at Thomas

Gibril Wilson was a bust so he's gone. Antrel Rolle and Ryan Clark didn't feel enough love from Miami's bank vault. Restricted free agency hasn't been an answer for Miami's free safety issues and neither Tyrone Culver nor Chris Clemons are probably the answer, either.

No wonder the Dolphins have scheduled a visit with Texas free safety Earl Thomas for the first week of April.

Thomas, considered by some scouts to be the second-best safety prospect behind Tennessee's Eric Berry, should be available when the Dolphins are scheduled to pick at No. 12 but won't be around for their second-round selection. So the Dolphins are obviously impressed enough with this playmaker to consider him as a first-round selection.

This does not mean Thomas will be Miami's first-round selection. The club will meet with nearly three dozen players between now and the draft.

But Miami's obvious need at free safety combined with Thomas' resume suggests the pairing could work.

NFL.com draft analyst Mike Mayock has called Thomas "the most instinctive" defensive back in this draft. The knock on Thomas is that he's perhaps smallish and that he is, after all, coming out after his sophomore season so he is a puppy.

All that is well and fine as I'm trying to paint the full picture of the positives and negatives on the player, But consider Thomas is 5-10 1/2 and weighed in at 208 pounds at the combine so he's gained about 10 pounds since the season ended. And if you think that weight gain was done by eating Whoppers, you're wrong. Thomas ran a 4.45 at the combine. As for not being strong, he benched 225 pounds 21 times -- which was two more than top safety prospect Eric Berry.

"I'm physical, versatile, and like I said, I played corner and safety," Thomas said during the Indianapolis Combine last month. "[I'm a] hard- worker. I'm not looking to come in and just sit back and watch. I'm looking to make an impact right now as soon as I get there."

Thomas made an impact at Texas, recording 10 interceptions in 26 career starts. He returned two of those interceptions for touchdowns.

One thing the Dolphins would love about this kid is he's a fine player but also a fine person. He was on the honor roll in high school and is an active member of the Christian church in which his grandfather was the pastor.

Interesting that in 3 of 7 games without Fergie, Dolphins defense held opponents under 100 yards rushing... And only 4 of 9 games with Fergie did the defense hold opponents under 100 yards.

Did they not see the run defense when he was the starter?

Just putting it out there for discussion... Those guys look at alot of tape and talk to more scouts and players than we do.

Just Because, i'll second your "really?"

Oh FFS!!!! Paul Soliai---is this who we're actually discussing a NT worthy of consideration???

He blows chunks.....and more importantly, the front office knows it, even if Universal Draft, whatever that is, does not.

Next Topic/Player?

Universal Draft has their opinion, Kiper, Mayock and others have Dan Williams at 12...after Fergunson went down our run D went down the toilet with Solai in there, the stats don't lie

I just put up the stats when he was a starter.

The Dolphins defense held 3 of 7 to under 100 yards with Soliai.... 4 of 9 to under 100 with Ferguson.

Stats or no stats - Soliai was the starter in the Houston game - Houston's run game was terrible and they tore us up; that's all I need to know. Not saying that Williams is the pick at #12 - but NT will be addressed in the 1st 4 Rounds.

Porter was one of the worst OLBs in league against the run last year according to KC Joyner (i think that's his name) over at EsPN. more than the NT factor in why the run defense wasn't always up to par.

NT has to be addressed in the first two rounds...to many teams are going to the 3-4 and we can't take a chance that no one decent is there in the 3rd....Universal Draft has lost credibility with that stupid Solai statement, idiots

You know what, if we look at next year in isolation, Paul Soliai would probably be better than any of the NT in this draft. I don't see any of them being plug in starters. Dan Williams and Terrence Cody need to have their bodies mature a bit more before they're ready for the NFL NT position. Troup is probably strong enough but he comes from a small school and will need to be taught the position a bit more. It isn't as insane as it first sounds to say that Paul Soliai in 2010, will be better than any NT in the draft. In 2011 and beyond though is a different story. A NT should have already been drafted. We are already behind the curve in succession planning for that position. Absolute must in the 2010 draft. Maybe 2 draft picks spent on it to make sure.

b12,

If we took Dan Williams in the 1st round,do you think he will be a starter for us straight away?

The reason i ask is because i just dont want him to be a project. Someone who might be great in 2-3 years from now

CJ2K had his worst YPC day of the season against us, 104 yards on 29 carries. We did not have big Ferg in that game. I do, however, remember Vince Young, yes Vince Young, tearing us apart because we couldn't cover anyone. While our run defense may have been lacking for half the season, EVERY week TEs and WRs killed us. We were AWFUL against the pass.

The Dolphins need a play maker on offense with the 12 pick in the draft. they need to sign a FS thats been in the league to help our 2 young corners. the Dolphins need DEZ BRYANT at 12. he is the player in the draft that has all the making of a superstar wide out. the dolphins might be able to get CODY from bama in the 2nd and burrent in the 3rd. what other wide out in the draft can help henne right away as much as DEZ BRYANT????? the pick at 12 has to be DEZ BRYANT if he is there.

i think its obvious I'm in the camp that Cody could start immediately at NT.

A small breakdown of the games with Soliai....

NE - Gave 109 to NE in the first game in Foxboro

Buff - Gave up 129 to Buffalo in a game were everyone in the back seven forgot how to tackle in the second half...

NE - Gave up 96 in a win

Jac - Gave up 95 against MJD

Ten - Gave up 128 against the rushing champion Chris Johnson and the best running QB in Vince Young

Hou - Gave up 126 against Houston when they were up 27 in the first half and ran the ball the rest of the second half. Don't know if you remember how many times the Fins got the ball in the second half because the D kept getting 3 and outs...

Pitt - Gave up 202. This was bad. Maybe this is the only game you guys remember with it being the last one.

Why is everyone stuck on this 2-3 year deal??? Did Lake Long not come in and play??? How many draftees come into this league and start??? We have Solai, that's it, Fergunson is out for 8 games..Yes, some players have to develop more then others but u take Dan Williams and he can be the starter for the next 12-15 years...we can't have ONE NT going into the season, take the best available

Bobbyd,

Dan Williams may not even be there, Buffalo has not even 1 NT for their new 3-4 defense. Its very likely they look at him strongly.

Dez Bryant just put off ANOTHER workout, so he skipped combine, proday, his rescheduled workout, Dez Bryant has NO chance of being a Dolphin

Bootang ur right, and we got people here saying Williams is a stretch at 12 and he may go to Buffalo in the top of the draft

Just for an comparison: Vince Wilfork vs. the same teams as Soliai

Buff - 90, 105

Jac - Did not play

Ten - 193

Hou - Did not play But the NE defense gave up 144 yards against them in a good game.

Soliai is better than anyone Denver had last season. And that Defense was dominant for the first half of the season. Parcells, just like he has never drafted a WR in the first round, has never drafted a nose tackle in the first round... Discuss...

If you think Earl Thomas is to small look at Polamalu and Reed.... Pretty much the same size.

Marcus, good stats to bring up. OLB play against the run sucked for them too last year. its called the "front 7" for a reason. need everyone doing their job.

One thing the stats don't take into account Marcus is how those rushing yards were coming. With Ferg in there nobody ran up the gut against us except for Carolina (even before Ferg went down.) We would get beat a ton on the weak side and with terrible play from the OLB position; Porter, et al. Once Ferg went down teams were able to run up the gut effectively.

Marcus,

I could be wrong but i just cant imagine Parcells going away from his trend of picking a good pass rushing OLB in the 1st round

I'm going out on a limb by thinking this is what Roger Goodall will be saying on April 22nd

"With the 12th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select Sergio Kindle"

Marcus, that would have been great for Denver if the NFL had a 8 game season, they don't ...are u suggesting we go into season with Solai and a no name draft pick as are NT??? There are much more talented NTs in this draft that will be alot better then Solai... U don't throw away ur future for today

Ak Fin Fan, exactly right!!! Thomas is too small??? Makes no sense

I don't know about Sergio... But I think you are right about OLB. If he is there, I think the pick is Derrick Morgan... His 20 yard shuttle and cone drills are better than Kindle's, showing better initial quickness and change of direction... He was just a step slower in the 40 carrying 15 more lbs... Great motor, can collapse the pocket and is good against the run... I don't think he is an elite rusher but playing across from Cameron Wake who I think is elite, he will be a great complement who will do everything well and bring in 8 - 10 sacks. Now you may say "Hey Joey Porter had 9 sacks last season how is this guy an upgrade?" Well, he will consistently put pressure on the QB, push the pocket and cause the QB to move... He will not disappear in a game like Porter did often. I think he compares favorably to Robert Ayers from Denver.

Paul Soliai isn't even a NT. He's a 4-3 DT masquerading as a NT.

@ Indiana 11.07 am

I was being sarcastic. Pat White was a stupid pick. We needed an LB not a gimmick QB

No luxury picks (Spiller?) is all i ask...

Kindle is a WLB and Miami already has Wake , anderson and taylor will be back. Miami's need is more SOLB and a Derrick Morgan would fit the Bill. Besides , i don't want to hear how kindle drove his car into the atlantic ocean after late night partying on south beach.

But just like the big building that ocean can jump right out when ur driving

Almsot every team in the top 20 has a glaring hole. There are so many good picks available I really hope we move down.

For instance, the Falcons need a DE/OLB badly and we could trade down and still get Big Dan(if he's there at 12 he should be there at 19).
Same could go with if we want Earl Thomas. 19 to 12 means a good 2nd pick.

We could also do this with Houston and get one of the picks we are coveting at around their best value. This all implies that teams like Buffalo and Raiders dont reach for need. Either way this draft is DEEP and I'd love to get more out of it

Going off the subject alittle...

How many of us predicted Vontae Davis to be our 1st rounder last year?

I thought it would be Larry English (before San Diego picked him at 16) but secretly wanted Hakeem Nicks

LOL @ bobbyd12. but bobbyd12 , kindle was texting his coach in the wee hours of the morning. then decided he was little to tired to deal with the cops and decided he'd go to bed and deal with it in the morning. LOL !

With the 12th pick the Miami Dolphins select..
Wait, there's been a trade, the Dolphins send their 12th pick and one of their three 6th round picks to Denver for Brandon Marshall...

Sorry... I was dreaming again :(

Bobbyd12 why so emotional? I'm saying I hope Parcells does what he always does... Find a Jay Ratliff or Ferguson later on... Nose is not in as bad a shape as we think... Think back to our losses....

Atl - The offense and Anthony Fasano (fumbles) failed us...

Ind - Ted Ginn had the winning TD go right through his hands

SD - Henne's first game, game was 6-3 at halftime... Secondary started allowing big plays and not enough pressure on Rivers

NO - Ginn started the fall in the second, Wildcat got shutdown, not enough pressure on QB and secondary started to fail

NE - Game was close, can't really remember this one

Buf - Defense completely gave up in the 4th and Henne imploded

Ten - Game was there at the end to win, Henne throws pick in OT...

Hou - Secondary was horrible, not enough QB pressure, took too long to come back

Pit - This game was not a normal game, lots of injuries, was a really weird... This was the worst game against the run.

Ok... Common theme... Not enough pressure on QB, secondary, playmaker on offense.... Nose is important... But not the reason we lost.

The hiring of Nolan and Dansby will help front seven but they still need more pressure... Add more playing time for Wake and draft an OLB will help alot. Secondary, we cut the weak link... Will just be better because more pressure will be applied and the corners are a year older...Playmakers on offense. Big need. This feels alot like the corner position last year... Was not addressed in FA. Got three picks in the draft.

So if we draft a NT, which NT will not be playing once Ferg is activated after 8 games. No way we keep 3 NT's on the game day roster!

Paul Soliai isn't even a NT. He's a 4-3 DT masquerading as a NT.

Posted by: NJ PHIN FAN | March 16, 2010 at 02:13 PM

Looks like he will be masquerading for a third straight year. Obviously they see something in him.

Who else is there ??

Who else is there at FS? They still cut Wilson. Parcells in company don't keep people just to keep them around... If they are no good, they cut them.

And seeing as Nolan's 3-4 is more like a 4-3, maybe that is why they are keeping him.

Who knows? Just speculating.

Paul Soliai does not step it up and we spend a first day draft pick on NT, Soliai will not be around for much longer.

Trade up and get Berry.Trade back into the second.
Time for Mr Ireland to earn his stripes.

I could see a late round pick at NT as well as a first day pick.

The hype machine was blowing up Demaryius Thomas last night on NFL network... Can't really see who would take him after the Bengals at 21... Especially if Dez Bryant drops... I think Dez will drop to the 20's and will be the only WR taken in the first... And then there will be a run on WR's taken in the top ten in the second... Its going to kill me... The Rams, Bucs (twice), Redskins, Chiefs, Browns and Seahawks can all take WR's before us.

Regarding the safety position, Clemons and Culver are on board and I think miami thought Mthey had clark in the bag. It backfired. You could be right that soliai would be a better fit in nolan's interchangeable 4-3 to 3-4. who knows. I also think they go NT later.

Señor Winces........

Where is the ñ?????????????????? HAHAHAHA

Hmmm... Did not know Rodrique Wright was a FA... Signed by the Jets.

Mark-

i know i wasnt on this blog last yr but i predicted Davis...and actaully had Mia taking S Smith where they took White.

Marcus, how is Nolan's 3-4 more like a 4-3 in your opinion? I'm just curious cause I remember how he had it look in Baltimore and how it looked with the 49ers. In Baltimore with Suggs I'd say it operated like the old 49ers type 3-4 when they had Charles Haley (elephant position). But with the 49ers it seemed more like a classic 3-4 since neither Manny Lawson or Haraylson (butchered spelling) was used that same way since neither fit that mold.

I am stunned to return here to see people actually trying to stir up convo on Soliai, as if he's actually a player.

Soliai has no future beyond the bench, and even there he's hanging by a thread (& not this pro-soliai one!).

I meaan SOLIAI???? REALLY???? That's where you folks want to go? He's a nobody---

NJ was not only right, he was being charitable when he said he's a 4-3 lineman, etc.

The fact that the FO is hanging onto him isn't a bouquet for Paul, it's a damnation of our sorry lack of depth.

i'd take Thomas over Dez Bryant. But the Bengals after signing Antonio Bryant would be better off going in another direction.

True that Seer. We dont have many options.

You have to hear the jet fans cying on the NY talk shows that they lost the coin toss and that it was fixed for the giants to open up the 1st home by goodell. It's F'N HILARIOUS !!
