Void at free safety? Dolphins to look at Thomas

Gibril Wilson was a bust so he's gone. Antrel Rolle and Ryan Clark didn't feel enough love from Miami's bank vault. Restricted free agency hasn't been an answer for Miami's free safety issues and neither Tyrone Culver nor Chris Clemons are probably the answer, either.

No wonder the Dolphins have scheduled a visit with Texas free safety Earl Thomas for the first week of April.

Thomas, considered by some scouts to be the second-best safety prospect behind Tennessee's Eric Berry, should be available when the Dolphins are scheduled to pick at No. 12 but won't be around for their second-round selection. So the Dolphins are obviously impressed enough with this playmaker to consider him as a first-round selection.

This does not mean Thomas will be Miami's first-round selection. The club will meet with nearly three dozen players between now and the draft.

But Miami's obvious need at free safety combined with Thomas' resume suggests the pairing could work.

NFL.com draft analyst Mike Mayock has called Thomas "the most instinctive" defensive back in this draft. The knock on Thomas is that he's perhaps smallish and that he is, after all, coming out after his sophomore season so he is a puppy.

All that is well and fine as I'm trying to paint the full picture of the positives and negatives on the player, But consider Thomas is 5-10 1/2 and weighed in at 208 pounds at the combine so he's gained about 10 pounds since the season ended. And if you think that weight gain was done by eating Whoppers, you're wrong. Thomas ran a 4.45 at the combine. As for not being strong, he benched 225 pounds 21 times -- which was two more than top safety prospect Eric Berry.

"I'm physical, versatile, and like I said, I played corner and safety," Thomas said during the Indianapolis Combine last month. "[I'm a] hard- worker. I'm not looking to come in and just sit back and watch. I'm looking to make an impact right now as soon as I get there."

Thomas made an impact at Texas, recording 10 interceptions in 26 career starts. He returned two of those interceptions for touchdowns.

One thing the Dolphins would love about this kid is he's a fine player but also a fine person. He was on the honor roll in high school and is an active member of the Christian church in which his grandfather was the pastor.

NJ, you owe me an apology.

NJ,

That is the guy who easily comes to mind, and both play very violently. How is he blocking? I didn't watch a lot of Notre Dame, so I don't know. If he blocks as well as I would naturally think he does, he sounds a lot like a Parcells type.

Even though you cannot see I would like you to know that I smile a little every time someone talks about "so many holes to plug"

STAY FAR AWAY FROM TAYLOR MAYS !!!!

Andra Davis to Buffalo.

Buffalo is going to be a sad team for years to come... Gailey is only good for getting fired.

What up Carlito!

NJ PHIN,

We have battled a bunch in the past about McClain vs my choice of BG. I think it's awesome for you to keep your own opinions. The fire / passsion you show is commendable.

I have seen the passion with which you argue/debate "your" guys. Other people on the blog do it too, including myself. It goes without saying you are gonna stick to your guns for the most part. It's more disheartening for me seeing as mearly every mock has the Fins taking everyone else besides my fav pick...ah, dems da breaks. Quite a number of sites/publications have McClain going to the Fins. I just wanted your opinion dude, no hidden agenda.

I just want you to know that if you are pegging me as a big "I told you so" guy I am not. I am not the enemy...that would be the Jet fans and NE fans bud.

Take three:

Ok, quiet on the set!... ACTION!...

"Hey NJ ol bud, who are your top 5 guys as things sit for the Fins first pick?"

Cheers,

Marcus.

With Tom Brady getting older and them really rebuilding on the fly, the Jets going for broke with little concern for 3 years from now, and Buffalo, well, being Buffalo, we should really be able to take a stranglehold on the division. As long as Brady is there, they will be tough. I think if this draft comes away very strong, we really put ourselves in a great position.

Boontang , tate is a ok blocker. He does his job. He's a tough SOB for a guy his size. He makes all the catches and has that all important YAC abilty.

Guys I am out. I'll be on later. Go Fins

If the Dolphins do not fill this need before Draft Day ... do you think they will trade down a few spots, get another late round pick and still grab Thomas later in the 1st ? The Dolphins are in a precarious position. The guys they really need will be gone by 12 ... and the guys that are second on the list do not deserve a 12 pick. So, they might get creative and trade down ... thoughts ?

Later on Boot!

Whats up Po?!?

I'm just getting my daily fix of Dolphins, but as strange as it sounds, I'm starting to agree with Aloco, its just the same thing every day on here...

to be or not to be?

Andra Davis, former SOLB for the Broncos is now a buffalo bill.

BOOOOOOOOOOO!

True True....

No new news here.

zt4hof,

If certain players are there at #12 when we pick there could be trade back talk. If not I think we are forced to stay and pick @12.

The players being there that could cause interest are:

Spiller
McClain
Dez
E. Thomas
Williams

Those are the players I could envision teams talking the the Fins when they are on the clock.

Cheers,

No on WR or RB @ 12.

NJ Phin,

Any top 5 list?

The olive branch is fully extended bro... Use your Larry Fitz hands and not your Ted Ginn hands to grab it mang. =)

Cheers,

Next year Yes, hope we will be pickin @ # 28 or so.

If ya know what I mean.

LOL @ Rob....

Word up Po!

Yeah... like ALoco, carlito and others are saying... Much of the content on here is the same but what could we all expect without actual transactions and simply too much time to pick over and re-discuss the limited info we all have to work with.

The draft won't come soon enough and debates over players will stagnate a bunch.

Cheers,

Moooooooooooooo! California, it's the Cheese!

;)

Po,

Yesterday I tried to break up the monotony by asking what Rex Ryan's theme song should be...

I chose "Rubberband Man" by the Spinners.

I'm sorry, but being an "active member of the Christian church" doesn't necessarily have anything to do with being a "fine person."

Such claims are deeply insulting to those of us who hold ourselves to high moral fiber but choose not to attend church.

Rob in OC,

Fat guys like Rex should be followed around with a tuba, so I'm thinking polka

LOL @ ROB. OK ! OK !. Thanks for the kind words. You're making me Blush. :). Here goes . 1 - Eric berry. 2 - ROLANDO MCCLAIN . 3- Derrick Morgan . 4- Dan williams . 5- Earl thomas . These are for the 12 Draft position not if they trade down.

LOL @carlito... good point! I'd say "Beer Barrel Polka" for him.

Hehe... too much mang.

Weird Al Yankovic's Fat

The 5 i don't want miami drafting at 12. 1 - dez bryant. 2 - CJ spiller . 3 - Jason pierre paul . 4 - sergio kindle 5 - joe haden.

"Fat"

Your butt is wide, well mine is too
Just watch your mouth or I'll sit on you
The word is out, better treat me right
'Cause I'm the king of cellulite
Ham on, ham on, ham on whole wheat, all right

My zippers bust, my buckles break
I'm too much man for you to take
The pavement cracks when I fall down
I've got more chins than Chinatown

Well, I've never used a phone booth
And I've never seen my toes
When I'm goin' to the movies
I take up seven rows

Because I'm fat, I'm fat, come on
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, come on you know
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
Don't you call me pudgy, portly or stout
Just now tell me once again who's fat

When I walk out to get my mail
It measures on the Richter scale
Down at the beach I'm a lucky man
I'm the only one who gets a tan
If I have one more pie a la mode
I'm gonna need my own zip code

When you're only having seconds
I'm having twenty-thirds
When I go to get my shoes shined
I gotta take their word

Because I'm fat, I'm fat, sha mone
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it you know
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
And my shadow weighs forty-two pounds
Lemme tell you once again who's fat

If you see me comin' your way
Better give me plenty space
If I tell you that I'm hungry
Then won't you feed my face

Because I'm fat, I'm fat, sha mone
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it, you know
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
Woo woo woo, when I sit around the house
I really sit around the house

You know I'm fat, I'm fat, come on
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it, you know it
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know, you know, you know, come on
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
And you know all by myself I'm a crowd
Lemme tell you once again

You know I'm huge, I'm fat, you know it
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, you know, hoo
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
You know I'm fat, I'm fat, you know it, you know
(Fat, fat, really really fat)
And the whole world knows I'm fat and I'm proud
Just tell me once again who's fat

Andra Bruce
to
Tampa!

Good list NJ.

Po white trash has just broken Robs record for length of post...

P.S. LMAO @ "sha mone"

NJ PHIN!

Thanks for the lost bro. A right fine one it is sir.

If I have the same cast to work with mine might be:

1.) Berry I think that guy will eventually pack a knarly wallop when he is a full grown man!
2.) Williams as NT is a pretty in yo face need for the Fins. The coached him at Senior Bowl extra points.
3.) Thomas Not so much for now as what i think he will do later. When he fills in even more he will factor more vs the run. He passes defensed numbers are above all other safties meaning he may have a knack for hitting as the ball arrives.
4.) McClain Lotta games played, ran a 3-4 from the middle so zero projection. Is said to be smart and a study guy, Satan kept him there whole time.
5.) Morgan I think he is a lil too stiff to play going backwards as OLB as much but he does bend well to make plays at LoS or in the backfield.

Cheers,

LMAO @ PO and his song. On that " NOTE ' , i'm out . I gotta run . until later guys.

It was a tough job but....

Someone had to do it.

Sorry Rob.

NJ Phin,

WOW! You are down on Haden eh? He made a lot of plays in college...just from the straight speed part or other factors for you?

Also, no way in heck I could take Spiller off a talented choice list. Just my opinion and glad you put the don't list out there.

Nice work.

Cheers,

carlito,

I thought you said allen stole my title a while back??

LOL

LOL @ Po!

Um, I am think Weird Al is...... Fat?

;)

The main reason I could move in a different direction in 1st than safety is guys like:

Reshad Jones 6'1 1/4, 214lbs 4.56 40 and 24 reps and wants to crush people and not just tip the ball away. 9 picks and and averaged 75 tackles last 2 years.

Morgan Burnett 6'1 3/8, 209lbs 4.55 40. One of the best underrated Safeties in the draft. Averaged 89 tackles last 2 years and has 11 INTs in that time as well.

These are guys that can be had MUCH later than Thomas or Berry and are not as much of a drop off as some may think.

Both those players will go probably in late second early 3rd round.

That free's up the Fins 1st and 2nd round picks.

Cheers,

Not sure why everyone is against us drafting Dez Bryant.. I know he is a "diva", but isnt nearly every top tier WR these days? Also, if you look at his tape, he is absolutely REDICULOUS.. he reminds me of a young T.O. He will be a pro bowler year after year. Hes a true gamebreaker with size, speed, GREAT ball skills, great hands, phenomenol making plays after the catch, and knows how to find the end zone.. Why wouldnt we want a guy like that? What, cuz he had lunch with Deion and lied about it? Cmon. The dude is sick, and if you ask me, he's the best player in the draft not named Suh

Az,

Read the news any? Not only has Dez Bryant not played football since september, he has also not worked out for any NFL scouts at the Combine, the Oklahoma State Pro Day, or his own private pro day...

AZ Phinatic,

The knocks piling up on Dez are that he is Super lazy and that would/could become very problematic with the crazy cash he would get @12.

The word is that some that have some ties with the OSU program that they would not pick Dez unless the team was willing to give him a full time assistant to wake him up, get him going, have him on time for meetings and games. The concern lies in his handling riches and fame vs knocking his ability.

The other popular believe is that if you look at all the guys they axed on Def and getting Mike Nolan in as a new DC they will restock the DEF. Nolan is said to be running his 3-4 a less than traditional way with elements of the 4-3 look splashed in.

Cheers,

give me the two WR from the U(hankerson and johnson) anyday over those bums, they are the next andre johnson

Good point carlito...

He has pushed the envelope sevearl times regarding a workout. First long layoff that carlito mentioned, then No workout at his teams Pro day, then he set his own Pro day and now he is pushing that day back further.

It's not the crime of the century but it shows a level of maturity, dedication etc that can be annoying for potential employers.

Carlito,
Ya, I know that he hasnt played since september, and hasnt run or worked out at his pro day, but that doesnt mean jack.. Rob in OC, ya, I read that article also, about how they would only draft him if he had an assistant to wake him up everyday.. But the talent is just too great for me to be able to look past. He looks everybit as good as Andre Johnson or M. Crabtree coming out of college.. I can just salivate thinking about him catching passes from Henne for the next 10yrs. But your right, we will probably go defense.. But there is no denying that Dez's TALENT is a SURE THING. Cant say that about R.Mcclain, S.Kindle,D.Williams,Pierre, and many of the other top defensive guys. Those guys all have holes in they're games.. Dez has ZERO holes in his game.. only off the field

AZ,

I am not denying Bryant's talent, but I don't see how a team could invest such a high pick in someone they haven't even seen workout... He could be terribly out of shape... hopefully he works out before the draft...

AZ Phinatic,

No doubt about the high talent level he has. If he ever wises up and thinks like Jerry Rice he has the skills to really good for a long time.

The NFL landscape is littered with super, highly talented draft prospects that never made it.

If it was just about starting talent I would think all teams would bat a hell of a lot higher average in the draft. The heart is the one they always talk about not being able to measure. I believe the term "He's got heart" caan be closely aligned with "desire".

If you were as close to the top of the mountain as Dez Bryant how would you treat it? I heard all the stuff about his rough childhood and all that too. Whatever he did he has gotten this far. Now he has to ask himself if he is just gonna get "Paid" or if he will use his gifts to the max?... so far it leans towards the former.

Cheers,

The not playing thing is more of a worry to me than the character issues... Last year everybody was talking about Vontae's character and maturity issues and he turned out to be a smart kid and standout on the Dolphins defense last year.

If the trifecta is confident about a players personality, I am all for it.

EThomas at #12 sounds good to me, FS and OLB is deep in this draft and NT is not so I would go DWilliams with the #12 pick but a player like Earl Thomas or CJ Spiller is justified and would be alright by me.

Woooooooo.!!!! Only 37 days to go fellas. :)

to be or not to be.....................MAMA MARIA COMING TO THE HOUSE TO COOK PASTA .

We have to get either DWilliams, TCody, or CThomas in this draft or we will be giving up 120 rushing yds for the 1st 8 games. Dan Williams is a top 15 pick so #12 is good value there if we pass on him or he is picked before #12 then we must pick up TCody or CThomas with the next pick #43, TCody has lost 20plus lbs sense the senior bowl and is a lock to go in the 1st and CThomas is a 2nd rd lock maybe even before #43. DWilliams should be the 1st pick if he is still on the board at #12. I love CJ Spiller he is lighting in a bottle but RB is no where close to a need, EThomas is a playmaker at FS but there will be good FS all through this draft unlike 34NT. We need a NT in this draft because it is Soliai or bust for the 1st 8 games. JAllen, TCurver, and CClemens could play FS by comity and we could find one later in the draft and be good at FS . Soliai was bad the last 3 games teams ran down our throats because we did not have a consistant NT. We have to address this need with one of those 3 players and in the 1st 2 rds.

Methinks there is a reason why the trifecta stocked up sixth round picks. (e.g. its a deep draft and we probably will gain quite a few starters from the later rounds of this draft)

MAMA MARIA IS A GREAT COOK .

"To be ME or to be MANY ME?" that is the real question ALoco isn't it???
