Karlos Dansby is close to reaching agreement on a contract with the Dolphins and the sides are expected to wrap up negotiations by Saturday morning, a source is telling The Herald's Jeff Darlington.
Dansby, 28, will sign a deal for five years worth $43 million with $22 million of it guaranteed, Darlington is reporting.
Dansby will make $9 million per year over the first three years.
The signing will be Miami's signature free agent move since Bill Parcells & Co. took over the Dolphins in 2008. The only linebackers that will be getting paid more than Dansby in 2010 are DeMarcus Ware and Terrell Suggs and both of them are pass-rushers.
The signing clearly numbs the sting of not chasing wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who was traded from the Arizona Cardinals to the Baltimore Ravens this afternoon.
Free safety Antrel Rolle, the last of the Three Cards Studs is still unsigned but strong indications are he will end up with the Giants, according to a league source.
[Update 10 p.m.: Rolle agreed to a 5-year deal worth $37 million with the Giants, the source tells me. Rolle gets $15 million guaranteed.]
Guess 1-for-3 isn't terrible.

WOooohhhhooooo!

YESSSSS!!!! after stealing our money by raising the prices, the dolphins finally sign a decend player

Armando!!!! You was right! My man! You said Wilson would be gone and now he is. Good Call! Lets see what the Trifecta do now.
Posted by: Toneman | March 05, 2010 at 08:05 PM
for that kind of money...he's going to play SOLB not in the middle.
Posted by: knowproblem | March 05, 2010 at 08:06 PM
I'll be excited when it happens. Now get Rolle and Walter.
Posted by: sullysfins | March 05, 2010 at 08:07 PM
NFL Network says Dansby will sign by tomorrow morning. The question is will the Fins sign Rolle too. Does anyone have news on that? Also they need to get a proven TOP receiver in FA and then get the rest through the draft. Glad they cut all the waste.
Posted by: Snowy Fin Fan | March 05, 2010 at 08:07 PM
There it is!
Posted by: Josh Brady | March 05, 2010 at 08:07 PM
Walter already signed back with the texans...I think rolle is over-priced
Posted by: knowproblem | March 05, 2010 at 08:08 PM
This was the one they really wanted.... of ever FA available... this is the one Miami needed the most. This opens up the entire front end of the draft for Miami... may even get you "Play Maker Receiver" guys a new toy..... All day been waiting for this deal... Will now resume my life.
Posted by: Derek in West Palm Beach | March 05, 2010 at 08:08 PM
Let's get Rolle!!!!
Posted by: Phins fan in Tally | March 05, 2010 at 08:08 PM
Sports 620 KTAR's John Gambadoro reports free-agent LB Karlos Dansby (Cardinals) has signed a five-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. Terms of the deal were not disclosed
Posted by: fishypete | March 05, 2010 at 08:09 PM
Great sign! I hope we get Roelle. I'm still pissed that the Ravens got Boldin for a friggin 3rd and 4th rd pick. Damnit!
Posted by: Petey Pablo | March 05, 2010 at 08:09 PM
Now let's get Rolle or Sharper, then draft OLB and NT with the first two picks or possibly WR with 2nd pick and NT in third.
FINALLY some good news.
Posted by: kula | March 05, 2010 at 08:09 PM
Let's party!
Posted by: Josh Brady | March 05, 2010 at 08:09 PM
Whoa Mando, you have been on a roll the last fiew months !
Posted by: Steve | March 05, 2010 at 08:10 PM
well, blow me down.
Nice to eat my words
Posted by: Jimmy Jam | March 05, 2010 at 08:10 PM
Big, big money. How could he refuse an offer like that, plus living the SoFlo life. Obviously, the Trifecta acknowledged the overwhelming glaring need for their LB core. Wonder if there will be other moves this weekend, whether that means cutting additional current players and signing new ones through FA? We still need Safety and receiver help.
Posted by: FIN4EVER | March 05, 2010 at 08:11 PM
I am so happy but forgive me If I wait until the morning to celebrate.......
Armando get off the Bouldin signing, we didnt have two high picks to get him with all the holes we must fill this off season....
Posted by: John | March 05, 2010 at 08:12 PM
Wow...OK, I'm all for the upgrade, but, this is very Joey Porter-ish. I'd barely heard of Dansby before FA and now we're about to pay him $9 mil a year? There will be a cap again one day...Hope he's a beast!
Posted by: Marc | March 05, 2010 at 08:12 PM
Thanks for info on Walter "Knowproblem".
Posted by: sullysfins | March 05, 2010 at 08:14 PM
I'm a Earl Thomas guy, so I'm not big on Rolle, He's just overrated and overpriced for me. He's asking for Dansby type money and I believe Dansby has more INTs than Rolle over the past 3-4 yrs....from the LB spot!
In the draft I know like (in this order) eric Berry, (who likely wont be there)Derrick Morgan, Dez Bryant(also might not be there with Denver trading Mr Attitude), Earl Thomas, and then reaching a bit with Dan Williams. I don't like McClain at 12 or Williams but williams moreso..I'd prefer a trade down if Berry, Morgan, and Bryant are gone but it take 2 to tango
Posted by: knowproblem | March 05, 2010 at 08:14 PM
Relieved!!!Now lets move on to our next target's. Good job

Yes! Yes! Yes!
Love,
Orlando Alzugaray
Posted by: dolfandave | March 05, 2010 at 08:15 PM
Mando,
1 out of 3 isn't bad at all when you consider this is the ONE guy Miami REALLY wanted.
Posted by: Josh Brady | March 05, 2010 at 08:15 PM
I wrote last week that the Cowboys would really need a LT...well just now I read they are seriously looking to dump Adams..if thats the case they will have to move up in the draft as I said...I wouldn't discount the chnace that the Cowboys and Dolphins switch draft picks and the Cowboys throw in Miles Austin. Stay tuned.
Posted by: fishypete | March 05, 2010 at 08:15 PM
Rolle and Antonio Bryant would be nice. Marshall would be a miracle but won't happen!
Posted by: Sprock | March 05, 2010 at 08:16 PM
sullyfins....you're welcome
Posted by: knowproblem | March 05, 2010 at 08:17 PM
Why would the signing of Dansby take McClain off their board? Miami cut 3 LBs today and is still in serious need of talent in the position. It would great to have two stud LBs from Auburn and Alabama trying to outdo the other on the field.
Posted by: The Bra1n | March 05, 2010 at 08:18 PM
Marc,
At 28 years old he was the ONLY sub 30 year old of any quality in the draft. Dansby has been very good for the Cards since being drafted. This is a strong move for them....perfect upgrade from Porter.
RUN RICKY RUN!!
Posted by: Fish Boy | March 05, 2010 at 08:18 PM
They overpaid.
But this time they overpaid for a good player.
Now we can chase a FS (Atogwe or Clark) and go OLB/NT in the draft
Posted by: Yann | March 05, 2010 at 08:18 PM
Mando,
You are the one that said Boldin was worth no more than a 4th rounder.
Then that a s s h o l e bobbyd12 went around around this blog echoing the same thing.
Posted by: PriceMaster | March 05, 2010 at 08:19 PM
This signing helps the draft so much. We have to get a nose tackle in the first round. Take best player left at the WR-TE position with 2nd and 3rd, then draft for depth at defensive spots. Go get Sharper at saftey if the young guys aren't ready to play yet.
Posted by: Will in Ohio | March 05, 2010 at 08:20 PM
its offical adam schefter reports
Posted by: LM_PhinFan | March 05, 2010 at 08:20 PM
fishypete....i haven't heard that scenario yet and I live in Texas...but....I love the thinking on it. There is a ton of depth for the WOLB spot well into the the back of the 2nd round and I believe Morgan was the only WOLB option worth the pick at 12. I would like that trade
Posted by: knowproblem | March 05, 2010 at 08:20 PM
Actually it's only 22 mil guaranteed...5 years, so he really isn't getting all that 43 mil...it depends if he plays for the entire 5 years. It also depends how the contract is worded...it could be front loaded or back loaded.
Posted by: fishypete | March 05, 2010 at 08:21 PM
1 out of 3 ? Miami was only interested in one of them and got them. Check Bart Scotts deal from last year, Dansby didn't get better then that.
Posted by: Mitch | March 05, 2010 at 08:21 PM
I said he'd be signed by 4 pm. I was close. Now d. Morgan in the draft & we got sik lb unit.
Posted by: Pootytang | March 05, 2010 at 08:22 PM
Marc, you're out of your mind man. The guy's a beast. First of all, he's a freakish athlete. He will somersault his way to QB's, he's flexible as hell. He's the type of guy who will come out of nowhere and rip the ball out of the QB's hands.
He's also good in coverage. You'll see what I'm talking about once the season kicks off.
Posted by: FB | March 05, 2010 at 08:22 PM
The 28-year-old Scott will make $27 million during the first three years of the contract, Lewis told The Associated Press.

I love my Canes but Rolle is a good safety, not a great one. If he's cool with a "good" $5m/year I'd love to have him, but $8m is Ed Reed money. If the Giants want him that bad, we should draft one in the 2nd/3rd or sign Ryan Clark. I really don't see a huge dropoff from Rolle to Clark. Rolle makes more plays but Clark is more relaible.
Posted by: Brass Monkey | March 05, 2010 at 08:23 PM
The dolphins just signed the second biggest name in free agency and arguable a better player than Peppers and you say I for 3 isnt terrible lol. My God man why dont you give this team some props once in a while. You have no problem bashing them day in and day out over and over again. Btw why dont you put yourself out there and tell us who the fins should draft in 2010 with pick 12. Name names and why you think one guy is better than the other.
Posted by: Palm Beach Fin Fan | March 05, 2010 at 08:23 PM
Still draft McClain at 12 if he is best player available then trade Crowders useless arse.... And for those of you whining about the Giants getting Rolle STOP IT he by numbers was not even a slight improvement over Wilson. Trifecta made a fair offer and Rolle wanted more just let him go.
Posted by: Michael N | March 05, 2010 at 08:23 PM
Yes! I said a couple days ago that we would probably only get one of the available cardinals and Dansby was the most important!
Karlito for Dansbito!
Sounds like a good deal for both sides... Dansby got paid handsomely, but didn't break the Dolphins with 30 mil guaranteed
today is a good day
Posted by: carlito from golfito | March 05, 2010 at 08:24 PM
Great signing. Very good linebacker. Now we can look elsewhere with the number 12 pick. If we dont end up signing antrelle rolle...I say grab a safety with that pick. Possibly a defensive tackle. Even though i like Tank Johnson as a free agent. Troubled past, but Parcells and our staff can coach him up. He is a talented player. I also think we should go after Chris Chambers. He belongs in Miami. Could prob land him for cheap. Forget Marshall...and anquan is gone. Bess and Hartline are real good young recievers. We'll see what happens....our front office will make the right moves. Karlos Dansby......YEEEAAAAHHH!!!!!!
Posted by: Wicky Rilliams | March 05, 2010 at 08:25 PM
Rolle is still out there...if he doesn't sign by tonight, I'm leaning towards him taking the Dolphins offer and joining Dansby in Miami.
Posted by: fishypete | March 05, 2010 at 08:26 PM
P.S. I almost sharted when I saw the blog headline!
Posted by: carlito from golfito | March 05, 2010 at 08:26 PM
Would love to get Clark from Steelers. Less costly than Rolle. maybe trade for Olsen from Bears to help with passing game if we dont get a decent WR via FA/trade. fasano is terrible. then do our thing in draft. move up or down depending on which guy/position we zero in on if necessary.
Posted by: Peco | March 05, 2010 at 08:27 PM
You DA MAN BIG TUNA !!!
Posted by: Jay | March 05, 2010 at 08:27 PM
step 1 cut GWilson and AAyodele done.
step 2 sign Dansby done.
step 3 resign Penn and JT ?
step 4 trade Thigpin for a 5th rd pick?
step 5 Draft Dan Williams or Dez Bryant with the 1st pick?
step 6 draft a OLB with the 2nd rd pick (Hughes, Sapp, Norwood or another one of many passrushers coming out of this draft)?
step 7 what ever position we did not pick up with the 1st pick (WR or NT) pick with the 3rd?
Posted by: Sean | March 05, 2010 at 08:27 PM
See that guys.... we got the one we really wanted and needed... and did not have to give up one single draft pick... that is how REAL management does it!!!
Posted by: Derek in West Palm Beach | March 05, 2010 at 08:27 PM
I also like Brandon Spikes in the second round. Thats why I said go elsewhere with the number 12 pick. Drafting a linebacker wouldnt be bad with the number 12....but id rather see a defensive tackle or a safety. Just my opinion.
