Karlos Dansby is close to reaching agreement on a contract with the Dolphins and the sides are expected to wrap up negotiations by Saturday morning, a source is telling The Herald's Jeff Darlington.
Dansby, 28, will sign a deal for five years worth $43 million with $22 million of it guaranteed, Darlington is reporting.
Dansby will make $9 million per year over the first three years.
The signing will be Miami's signature free agent move since Bill Parcells & Co. took over the Dolphins in 2008. The only linebackers that will be getting paid more than Dansby in 2010 are DeMarcus Ware and Terrell Suggs and both of them are pass-rushers.
The signing clearly numbs the sting of not chasing wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who was traded from the Arizona Cardinals to the Baltimore Ravens this afternoon.
Free safety Antrel Rolle, the last of the Three Cards Studs is still unsigned but strong indications are he will end up with the Giants, according to a league source.
[Update 10 p.m.: Rolle agreed to a 5-year deal worth $37 million with the Giants, the source tells me. Rolle gets $15 million guaranteed.]
Guess 1-for-3 isn't terrible.

He already signed....5 years 24M guaranteed....WOW....

Thank god we are getting something out of this free agency, I welcome you mr. Dansby. It sucks to see Boldin slip away

least the pats didnt get boldin
Posted by: marino | March 05, 2010 at 10:06 PM
draft Spiller at #12, trade Ronnie Brown for a 2nd round pick, draft Wr and OLB in 2nd round, NT in the 3rd, get the TE from UM in 4th, sign the FA safety from Pittsburgh-DONE!
Posted by: dave p | March 05, 2010 at 10:07 PM
Rolle is the highest paid S in NFL history. Thank god we weren't involved in that
Posted by: Bootang25 | March 05, 2010 at 10:08 PM
Dolphins have a lot of flexability now in the draft with the 12th pick. Dasnby can play SOLB or ILB which allows the Phins to do about what they want to. I would go NT (Williams) at 12 and the best OLB available in the 2nd. I feel McClain will be gone by the 12th pick if Marshall signs with Seattle.
Posted by: TNPhinFan | March 05, 2010 at 10:08 PM
dave known of that is gonna happen, lets be realistic
Posted by: marino | March 05, 2010 at 10:09 PM
Of the 3 guys from AZ, we got the safest bet without giving up any draft picks and a decent contract. A win if you ask me
Posted by: Bootang25 | March 05, 2010 at 10:10 PM
Rob , i just got in after working out and then having dinner with some friends. You see i have a life and things to do that are more important than coming on a blog , especially on a friday night. Yeah , i'm going to duck a blog because the dolphins will sign dansby. LOL !!! Good for the dolphins. I'm happy it improved my team. He 's a good player( NOT GREAT ) that got alot of money because there was no one else on the market. You guys are expecting way to much from dansby. some will even be a little disappointed. i heard all this when gibril wilson sughned. Shyt half the people never heard of dansby before this free agency. He 's just of piece of the puzzle in helping this defense and team .
Posted by: NJ PHIN FAN | March 05, 2010 at 10:12 PM
I bet Porter goes to the Jets just because Rex Ryan & Joey are both D-bags
Posted by: DantheMan | March 05, 2010 at 10:12 PM
least rolle signed with ny so we dont have to listen to that garbage anymore
Posted by: marino | March 05, 2010 at 10:12 PM
Let's be realistic based on the cuts made and the signing of Dansby today/tomorrow. The Dolphins office knows exactly what weakneses they have and what needs to be done to put this organization in the direction to win big. I will put my faith in what their office is moving towards right now. The personnel cuts speak volumes about the direction this franchise is going in regarding FA and the draft.
Go get them Bill.

THERE YOU GO! FINALLY EVERYTHING IS ON THE RIGHT TRACK, LETS CELEBRATE....
GREAT WORK MANDO
Posted by: Panamadolphin | March 05, 2010 at 10:16 PM
NJ, now what??? You think we use Dansby as an ILB or OLB?? That decision will have a major effect on what we draft...
Posted by: bobbyd12 | March 05, 2010 at 10:16 PM
At least we are moving towards something. I hope everyone has a great and safe night.
Posted by: FIN4EVER | March 05, 2010 at 10:17 PM
Karlito , Dansby's 25.5 career sacks were not all from the ILB position. Dansby started his career at olb and 8.5 sacks in 1 year from his OLB position a few years back. Dansby had 1 sack , int and 1 forced fumble last year from his ilb position. Those are not eye popping , playmaking numbers for that kind of money. I can live with the 22 mil guaranteed but for that kind of money , i think miami might put dansby at SOLB and still draft mcclain.
Posted by: NJ PHIN FAN | March 05, 2010 at 10:18 PM
Bobbyd12, see above post.
Posted by: NJ PHIN FAN | March 05, 2010 at 10:20 PM
Mad Props tp the Front Office.
I admit to getting negative today but they got their man, so "way to go"!!
And it is not fair to say they "only" got one of three. They were never going to trade picks for a WR. They tried on Rolle, and their are some stat busters who say he ain't top notch.
But I think Dansby is a MAJOR upgrade, and so do they, and they snagged him pronto!
WooHoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: The Seer | March 05, 2010 at 10:21 PM
NJ, yea, drafting McClain if there would really solidify this LB Corp, having Wake, Crowder, McClain and Dansby would be very nice...I'm pretty sure today's signing of Dansby ended Jason Taylor's career as a Dolphin
Posted by: bobbyd12 | March 05, 2010 at 10:23 PM
While I'm stoked....I do agree w/ much of what NJ sez.
He's good, maybe (let's hope) very good, but not great. Yet he was the best FA LB out there, and he is a major improvement over what we had, and it gives team greater flexibility on draft day. Plus while the $$ is high, it ain't crazy high all things considered.
And the move shows committment by Ross to Tuna & Tuna to us.
Posted by: The Seer | March 05, 2010 at 10:25 PM
Bobby/NJ,
I think JT will be moved to the Right (his natural side) to work with Wake. I hope we can still get McClain at 12, but, am doubtfull with Marshall maybee going to Seattle who has 2 1st round picks. One of the rummor blogs says the Broncos would get the higher of the 2 which is 6th ( the other is 14). With the 61th and 11 Bryant and McClain are the likely picks if there for Denver. That would leave us with Best OLB or NT at 12. What do y'all think?
Posted by: TNPhinFan | March 05, 2010 at 10:28 PM
bobbyd12, if Dansby does go to SOLB then I don't see why we can't have Taylor too to platoon with Wake at WOLB. That sounds pretty sweet to me.
Posted by: cavalierkong | March 05, 2010 at 10:29 PM
typo 6th not 61th
Posted by: TNPhinFan | March 05, 2010 at 10:29 PM
If mcclain is still available at 12 the dolphins get him and move dansby to strong side making one of our weaknesses last year into one of our strengths ,
Posted by: Jncrdn | March 05, 2010 at 10:30 PM
I know Taylor didn't really like being platooned but if he isn't forced to play SOLB anymore he might go along with it. I think he's going to face the sharing time situation anywhere he goes.
Posted by: cavalierkong | March 05, 2010 at 10:30 PM
Let's hope Marshall deal with Seattle falls through
Posted by: TNPhinFan | March 05, 2010 at 10:31 PM
In the whole state of Indiana there is 1 ghetto.
In this ghetto is a bus route labeled D-12.
Can anyone guess who the driver is?
Posted by: PriceMaster | March 05, 2010 at 10:33 PM
@ Seer . exactly. !!

good job phins
Posted by: buckeyedolphin fan | March 05, 2010 at 10:35 PM
TnPhinfan, If McClain is in fact gone then I'm sticking with my pick, Dan Williams but now with Akin gone we have a glaring hole IMO, especially if we are depending on an ILB in this draft, not deep in this area...If Dansby stays ILB then there is OLB options in the draft but ILB???
Posted by: bobbyd12 | March 05, 2010 at 10:35 PM
Bobbyd12 . i don't think this ends the taylor era. I think he stays and shares duties with wake on one side. This move of getting dansby makes me want the dolphins to get mccalin even more. You'll have veterens crowder and dansby nextto him.
Posted by: NJ PHIN FAN | March 05, 2010 at 10:38 PM
PriceMaster-bater that would be funny if I lived in Indiana but I live in Fl...are ur kids as stupid as u???
Posted by: bobbyd12 | March 05, 2010 at 10:38 PM
bobby how about an ilb tandom of Chowder and spikes:) Florida Gator two step. LMFAO!!!
Maybe another ILB FA pickup in Foote or Fajita from the Saints
Posted by: TNPhinFan | March 05, 2010 at 10:40 PM
I hope someone doesn't scoop him up overnite or he reconsiders. He Gould have never been let out til he signed. Someone could fly down and be at his doorstep right now. If I were another coach I would take the first flight
Posted by: Finfan23 | March 05, 2010 at 10:40 PM
TnPhinfan, man I don't know about Spikes but honestly he would be one of the better options

I am sure the brain trust has a plan Bobby... and I am not talking about the trifecta.... i am talking about the blog brain trust. LOL

Nose tackle needs to be addressed - hopefully Cam Thomas will be there in the 3rd - if not Linval Joseph or Torell Troup might do the trick in the 3rd-4th
Posted by: Just Because | March 05, 2010 at 10:43 PM
Oh I'm sure the GMs on this blog will figure it out, ur right
Posted by: bobbyd12 | March 05, 2010 at 10:44 PM
Bobby,
I was joking about Spikes. He can tackle but is slow like Chowder. They would get eaten up in the middle, especially if NT is not addressed. I am hoping for McClain or William at 12 too.
Posted by: TNPhinFan | March 05, 2010 at 10:44 PM
I gotta give Parcells and Ross major kudos for today and it's funny how season ticket renewal notices came out today, but I'm sure that was just a coincidence right???

Rolle gets five years, $37 million from Giants
Posted by Mike Florio on March 5, 2010 10:09 PM ET
NFL_rolle.jpgSafety Antrel Rolle has a new home.
Barely a day after being cut by the Cardinals, Rolle has agreed to terms with the Giants.
Per a league source, it's a five-year deal worth $37 million, an NFL record for a safety. Rolle gets $15 million guaranteed and $22.5 million over the first three years.

Bobby BTY..
I live in TN and the only Ticket I am buying is the NFL Sunday Ticket. I wonder if they will raise their ticket prices too?

Chad Pennington is back! Looks like Thigpen is on the block - hopefully we can get that 5th rounder we don't have or better

Just Because
Where are you getting your info
Posted by: TNPhinFan | March 05, 2010 at 10:53 PM
Maybe we could put Pat White on the trade block and keep Thigpen?
Posted by: TNPhinFan | March 05, 2010 at 10:55 PM
NJ,
How can you not be happy with the moves made today? The Dolphins released their 3 biggest liabilities on defense and signed the best available F.A. to fill a big hole. Dansby got good money, but he didn't get the huge $30 million guaranteed... He is in his prime having over 100 tackles the past 2 years, his sack numbers might not be eye popping, but his interceptions (10) and forced fumbles (12) are... This is a win any way you look at it... We got a good player, got rid of dead weight, got more flexible in the draft, and didn't lose any picks...

NFL Network just reported. Chad Pennington got a 1 yr contract.
Posted by: Frank | March 05, 2010 at 10:59 PM
Maybe Pat White can play SOLB or ILB?
Posted by: TNPhinFan | March 05, 2010 at 11:02 PM
Pat White has limited to no trade value, probably couldn't get a 6th or 7th for him now with his performance last year.
You paid a 5th for Thigpen and he is a good back up with potential. You need to keep him around unless you can get atleast a 3rd, he doesn't cost us much either.
