(Mostly) quiet on Miami Dolphins front

Why am I working today?

Bill Parcells isn't. He spent Saturday morning in Jupiter, FL. at the shared training facility of the Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals. Parcells is tight with Cards manager Tony LaRussa and has a healthy respect for Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez, also.Tuna marlins

So the Big Tuna is taking in a spring training game this afternoon. Of course, he has his phone with him and is in contact with the home office back in Davie. But this all suggests today doesn't compare with Friday's start of free agency for electric activity.

The team should announce the signing of Karlos Dansby later today. The fact is the NFL transactions wire has him as signed already.

[Update 2:30 p.m.: The contracts have been signed and the club is expected to announce the signing of Dansby and Chad Pennington within the next 90 minutes or so.]

[Update 4 p.m. :The Dolphins did not have any UFA visits today that they are reporting to the NFL. And the Dansby contract, in fact, will be signed in a few minutes. Last-second language stuff. He's on the way to the facility to get it done.]

One would assume the team is making calls on it's second wave of free agents -- assuming there are any.

It stands to reason that as safety was a priority as soon as Antrel Rolle (the one that got away) was cut loose by Arizona, that Miami would take the next logical step toward filling that spot. The next logical step would be to check out the other available free safeties on the market.

The Herald's Jeff Darlington is reporting the Dolphins have not to this moment shown interest in St. Louis Rams restricted free agent O.J. Atogwe. Atogwe was tendered with a right of first refusal contract, meaning the Dolphins wouldn't have to pay draft choice compensation to sign Atogwe.

Another restricted free agent safety is Indy's Antoine Bethea. The guy was a Pro Bowl player, if you recall. The draft pick compensation on him is substantial -- a first round pick. But one would suppose the team could always work a trade with the Colts rather than give up the first-round selection. (Maybe a second-rounder?)

Many of you have asked about Darren Sharper as a Dolphins possibility. He'll be 35 years old in November and the Dolphins didn't show any interest in him last year when he was a year younger and available cheaply. This one would not make sense at this time.

Pittsburgh's Ryan Clark is available. Good player. Make sense. The Herald is looking into whether he is on the radar or not.

The one that got away met with the press corps that covers his new team today.

Safety Antrel Rolle was introduced to the New York media today. (Yes, some teams actually have press conferences to introduce their new players.) Rolle talked about what type of player the Giants are getting.

"I think I can make any type of play, to be honest" he said. "Not to sound cocky or arrogant, but that's just the way I am. I'm never going into a game and deny myself an opportunity. If it presents itself, I think I can definitely make the play."

Rolle talked about how the Giants made him feel comfortable and reminded him how it was being recruited at the University of Miami. The Miami native said he felt "like home" with the Giants.

Let me tell you another reason Rolle isn't actually playing at home, as in for the Dolphins. MONEY!

The Giants blew the Dolphins away on the cash front. The Dolphins offered Rolle a deal averaging $6 million per season. The Giants paid Rolle a deal that averages $7.4 million per season.

And the Dolphins didn't come in second for Rolle. They were third.

Rolle said the Arizona Cardinals were willing to match the Giants offer. The Dolphins clearly were not.

Check back often as I will have the latest updates from The Herald team right here. And follow me on twitter. Also, follow Darlington on twitter.

Thigpen may be best wildcat QB onteam nut make no mistake about it, Henne is theQb for the next 10 years. Barring injury or trade.

Bobby I know what you are saying, but someone has to take a shot on him. If the price is right, why not give him incentive laden deal and let him make plays for us. Pats got Moss for a fourth rounder and he had same type of character issues. The Pats are happy they made the deal. All good WRs are head cases. It goes with the territory

Mr. Thigpen is not the best QB on this team, if he was he woulda played, and I don't wanna hear about the second half of the Pittsburg game which meant nothing for either team...He is great trade bait, nothing else

4th and 5th round picks are still good value rounds for Line, Backs and TE. Multiple players are thigpen ( who appears to be the odd man out) and camarillo (aging and same type of wr as hartline and bess) or ginn (well enough said).

No, I'm not kidding carlito. Henne is still learning. It's entirely possible, maybe even probable that Henne will pass Thigpen this year. But the fact is, Henne has to improve on his accuracy, touch on short passes and decisions. More turnovers than TDs will cost you the game everytime.

Joe your correct about ints. but half of those could be directly attributed to no separation by WRs and him forcing it a bit.

Henne is already miles ahead of Thigpen. How many games has thigpen won in his career????? The reason Henne had so many interceptions towards the end of the season is because the Defense was constantly giving the other teams 3 touchdown leads and Henne had to throw the ball 50 times instead of playing the kind of offense that the Dolphins game-planned for.

Hold on to Thigpen, no doubt.

crack is wack

Agree Carlito. There has to be a reason why Thigpen is where he is at this stage of his career. Because he will be a career backup. Not even close to Henne talent wise. Henne is a prototypical Qb and will be the Fins for next 10 yrs.

I think right now that Thigpen is the 2nd best QB on the team.

Henne is younger and has made some really nice throws. Let's see how he does with a whole off season and mini-camps to improve even more.

Thigpen also is on the younger side (26) and has a skill set that intrigues. He did a nice job trying to bring us back vs Pitt last year. I think the Trifecta hangs onto him unless they get an offer they can't refuse.

Pat White is a Trifecta 2nd round choice. He is gauranteed at least two full seasons beofre they throw up their arms in dispair. He has really bad trade value so that won't be happening. They will have to see improvement to hang onto him for long.

Chad Pennington has the experience, brain and willingness to rehab yet another time he can't be counted out. He was so dedicated before that there is a chance he gets back near his old level of play. Trade is exactly why they did NOT settle for a "No trade" clause. I think when healthy he may fetch the best pick in return due to his veteran leadership and ability to jump in right away.

Sup carlito!

Jr2, I heard the perfect explanation this morning from a former NFL guy...He said, "as a boss of a company, you have the right to hire or not hire someone, within the confines of the law. Bill Parcells is the boss, he doesn't like to hire people who he feels are disruptive or have character issues, in this case, Brandon Marshall has all the negatives Parcells hates, and he won't be a Dolphin" Jr2, it don't matter how u or me feel, Parcells will NOT have Brandon Marshall here, so it's a waste to talk about it

Hello Rob in Oc,

I am still buzzing over the release of Hoey Porter, The Gerbil, Akin Ayodele, and the signing of Karlito Dansby. This will only last for so long though and I fear I will need my fix of Dolphins news again before the draft.

Rob in OC, can't agree with u...we won't carry 4 QBs so one goes, we can't trade Pennington for a pick with the draft a little over a month away, he is coming off surgery BUT we can trade Thigpen for a pick in this draft, and we need picks...

I don't think the Trifecta has a problem going into the season with all 4 QBs. They are not going to just give away Pennington or Thigpen. Remember, we carry 7 OL a lot of the time, and most teams carry 8.

I think someone like the Rams or the Browns would give up a pick for Thigpen. Maybe the fins can get that 5th rounder that they are missing... Thats what we got him for last year.

It looks like we differ on who will be the odd man out. I say it will end up being Pennington. You think Thigpen. As always fub to watch the predictions come true or not.

As for draft picks ANY combo of Thigpen, Camarillo for a 5th , Thigpen and Ginn for a 4rth is too little compensation by a ways.

Just saw that Ferguson is suspended for the 1st 8 games, looks like the fins definitely need a nose tackle now....

I think it is an injustice to Thigpen that we talk about just giving him away. He could be a legit starting QB in this league. He is a nice bargaining chip to have.

Bobby you are 100 percent correct. I just don't agree with Tuna's reasoning. Steve Smith, Ocho, Moss, TO, Braylon Edwards, Burress, Stalworth, etc. Who did I miss? It comes wit territory like I said. Big risk/reward and Tuna has to eventually roll the dice. This isnot only a mediocre team Bobby, but it is an awful dull one too. I guess I am just too starved for them to win!!

Agreed... Imho I think Dansby was the #1 help the Fins could have pulled from the entire FA pool. Great, steady tackler, flexible to play 2 positions, not injury prone and has zero baggage that I know of. Can probably beat any of last years starters in a foot race.

I am on cloud nine as I was targeting Dansby as y fav get. I'll be buzzing roght along with you bud.

Whoa there Nelly, didn't want to start a war. I like Henne and I want to see him suceed but if you think a 1st year QB is better than a vet then drink up. Koolaide's on me.

Here's the thing, you have to believe the Dolphins are willing to pay 4.15 million for an additional 4 or 5 th round draft pick??? That is what u have to pay Penny to trade him, I don't think so

Fair enough. We agree to disagree. I am thinking more like Bootang in that you simply adjust your roster to let the situation play out longer. It would only be by 1 player and the more desperate teams BETTER give up more than a freakin 5th for someone they would try as a starting QB or at least be in that mix.

I think teams like AZ, Buffalo, Rams need competition at QB in a bad way and should pony up a 3rd rounder for that opportunity. Even we gave up a 5th to get Thigpen when KC drafted him in 2007 as a 7th round pick.

Which vet are you talking about Penny or Thigpen being better than Henne?

The Fins won't give anyone a NTC, so they couldn't give Penne one. But Bobby is correct. They in essance gave him one without giving him one. No way they sign him then trade him. Guys, Pat White may be the odd man out unless the get a great offer for Thigpen.

Thigpen is by no means a vet! lol learn what you are talking about! The guy has played in about 15 games as a result of other qb's injuries and won how many??? 1??? 2?? Please tell me because I am asking. Thigpen is a vet lmao! There is no koolaid being drunk, Henne is clearly the better qb. lol!

Every player has to be a bargaining chip. They did get around the "No trade" clause by throwing more financial security at Pennington.

To think they could never trade the guy seems rather narrow thinking right? So you think that if someone wanted to give the Fins a 1st or 2nd round pick they wouldn't trade him tomorrow? That is more unrealistic but a 3rd or maybe a 4rth would do the trick I believe.

It's a deep draft and the Fins are trying like heck to cover holes including all the players they cut. I believe Penny should not get too comfortable as the Fins would look at it like buying a draft pick if it's early enough.

Pennington may be further ahead of schedule then then the Fins are letting on which is why they could be in trade talks with other teams regarding him.

thigpen hopefully will get an honest opportunity to win the QB job. he kept his mouth shut and waited for a chance to play. the brass has picked alot of qb's in the last few years(3 second round picks henne, beck, white) and others like penne,mcCown, thigpen etc. hoping that one will emerge as a #1. my opinion; it will be thigpen if given a chance to win the job. he is a natural at moving the team and he has the ability to feel pressure and move in the pocket to avoid pressure. he does this very smoothly;can run and make all the throws. henne seems stiff, doesn't possess that internal clock with pressure coming and cant throw the short swing pass or the softer throw over a backer. he has to drill every ball thru someone. cant blame ginn on all of them.

I know this much. IMO, I'd rather have Thigpen than Leinart, anyone on the Rams, Matt Moore, Sage or TJack, anyone on Buffalo, anyone on Cleveland, Cassel, anyone on Oakland. And those are just guys I think he is clearly betterthan, let alone guys like Alex Smith, D Garrard, K Orton to name a few. This kid makes plays, period. If I was the Rams, I'd make a play for Thigpen and try to build around him. Granted I like him more than probably most, buhe has an 'it' factor. And I don't put too much into his Win/Loss record, KC is abysmal.

You know the player Thigpen most reminds me of to be honest. Rich Gannon. A poor mans Gannon, but very similar in how they hurt you in many ways. Gannon really shined when he was paired with Brown and Rice and C Garner. I think Thigpen is very similar.

We have trade bait all over this roster, it will play out before the draft and I see us with double digit draft picks. We have 9 picks right now and I see us trading for more.

I just can't see them getting more than a fifth or sixth for him and at that point, why even sign him. I think he will be carrying the clipboard and Thigpen is gone. You do make good points but why wouldn't a team interested in penny just sign him when he was available as opposed to give up a pick? It will be interesting to see how it goes down.

OC, actually both. Not saying Henne will not take the next step, he probably will. Like I said, this year will tell us.

BTW, still scratching my head about the Pennington decision.

Henne is the Qb of the future, you want to go into training camp with him getting reps as the starting qb, something he didn't have last year. This should make a big difference in his development. You don't want to put a snag in your franchise qb's development to give some journeyman, career backup a chance...

Get our 5th rd pick back when we trade Thigpen. If Penn is healthy Thigpen goes and we get our 5th rd pick back.

greg z,

I doubt the Fins want any real QB controversy but, I would stop short of saying they would hold back a superior QB just becasue they picked a guy higher.

If Thigpen shows well enough he could get the backup QB job and be 1 injury away from being the starter.

The Fins will probably end up making White a designated WR as that way they can play him at QB at anytime without worrying about juggling the lineup #2-#3 QB for Wildcat purposes.

The Jets run the Wildcat with WR Brad Smith and are free to bring him in and out as much as they like as a Wildcat QB.

GregZ...Henne is the QB of this team, the last thing the Miami Dolphins need is a QB controversy, Henne is the man, any competition is for backup

Mando, you keeping saying we cant win without a top WR you state Championship teams all hve them. I have to correct you. we Can win with second tier receivers if the O-line and running game are effective and the defense stifling. many teams have won the SB without a top WR. New England won all of their SB's with Branch. the giants won 3 without a stud Wr. the Ravens won the SB without a stud WR. You could even argue that the steelers did it as well when you look at the season stats of Ward and Holmes. What all of those SB WINNING teams had in common was strong D and Running. I like a Wr as much as the next but get over it and STOP with the WE CANT WIN WITHOUT one. Fact is its been done before, not just once, and not so long ago that wwe should all forget it!!!!!!!

Guys, I like thigpen and think he is the better #2 QB. I just think he is the odd man out. If the Phins carry all 4 QBs into august, they could put Pennington on the PUP and hold on to Thigpen through week 6 like Roth and hold for a trade and even put Pennington on the Injured reserve if they want to keep Thig after week 6. Lots of ways to keep all 4 for the start of the season. Anyway still think Thigpen or Pennington will be traded.

Thigpen is much more of a movement / running QB than Gannon was.

Coco you think Thigpen is ahead of Henne? WTF
Just look at their records and stats.

What made Gannon so good was his movement and running. He was very reliant on it early in his career. Once he figured out the right ways to use his movement, that is when he became deadly.

now ferguson suspended and gone. we ever gonna have some good news for the fins

It just remains to be seen exactly how much value any of the "other" QBs the Fins have value wise.

It may be no big deal to adjust the roster and carry a 4rth QB to let time / rehab Penny so he has max trade value or they feel comfortable moving Thigpen as Penny can back up Henne.

It just seems like the Fins want to get younger and Penny is a much older, oft injured QB. Great guy and would have an instant job as a QB coach most anywhere.

Gannon rushed for 2449 yards in his career. He had basically 9 seasons of legit stats. His career high was when he was 35. Very good mobile QB.

Coco you think Thigpen is ahead of Henne? WTF
Just look at their records and stats.

Yeah and Wilson was ranked way ahead of Rolle. Who would you want as a SS? WTF

Keep in mind Thig is the only other QB not named Henne that has Trade value right now. Penny is injured and White is a gimmic QB. I wonder if White can return punts and kickoffs?

already said pennington is the number 3 qb, they like thigpen at 2

Wilson: Ryan Clark taking first visit

Steelers free agent safety on a trip Aaron Wilson

Pittsburgh Steelers veteran free agent safety Ryan Clark is taking his first visit today, according to his agent, Joel Turner.

Turner declined to specify which team Clark is visiting. Heading into free agency, Turner indicated that seven teams had expressed interest in the hard-hitting defensive back.

"We took all day Friday and we waited until we were comfortable and set our first visit," Turner told National Football Post. "We watched what was happening in the marketplace. We weren't going to just jump in on the first offer. That's not the way we're approaching it."

Marino like Ireland already said??? Same guy that said Akin and Gebril were fine??? Don't believe anything

Does anyone find it troubling that our 2 leading tacklers last year were our safties? That means way to many tackles in the second level, and the reason our run d was so poor. Why waste picks or free agent capitol on another saftey, when the glaring hole is the defensive line.?

Gannon relied on his running?

He has a 15.59 career rushing average rush per game. He did NOT average higher than 20.3 yards per game except for his single abberation season in 2000 when he had his career high 33.1 yards per game average. Not really much of a threat with his legs.

While he was no Marino in his lack of ability to run away from danger but, he will never be confused for a rushing QB... IMHO.

Cheers bud,

pennington agrred to be third string, he said so himself in interview

this team has so many holes, need playmakers on offense and a big run stopper on d

Gannon played in 157 games. 2449 career rushing yards divided by the games played shows an average per game of 15.59 yards.

Not exactly rushing stud material...to me.

wasnt his rushing ability but his scrambling ability and u knew that

Rob, early in his career, Gannon was known as an extremely athletic QB who could move.

His career high was at 35 years old... I thought you had said he relied on rushing early in his career?

No matter, it's Gannon who is not a Phin and doesn't affect today's Fins so it's all good. If you think he was a good/great runner than so be it. No worries.

why are we caring about gannon
