« Thoughts going into the 2nd day of free agency | Main | The Pennington contract covers all the bases »

(Mostly) quiet on Miami Dolphins front

Why am I working today?

Bill Parcells isn't. He spent Saturday morning in Jupiter, FL. at the shared training facility of the Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals. Parcells is tight with Cards manager Tony LaRussa and has a healthy respect for Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez, also.Tuna marlins

So the Big Tuna is taking in a spring training game this afternoon. Of course, he has his phone with him and is in contact with the home office back in Davie. But this all suggests today doesn't compare with Friday's start of free agency for electric activity.

The team should announce the signing of Karlos Dansby later today. The fact is the NFL transactions wire has him as signed already.

[Update 2:30 p.m.: The contracts have been signed and the club is expected to announce the signing of Dansby and Chad Pennington within the next 90 minutes or so.]

[Update 4 p.m. :The Dolphins did not have any UFA visits today that they are reporting to the NFL. And the Dansby contract, in fact, will be signed in a few minutes. Last-second language stuff. He's on the way to the facility to get it done.]

One would assume the team is making calls on it's second wave of free agents -- assuming there are any.

It stands to reason that as safety was a priority as soon as Antrel Rolle (the one that got away) was cut loose by Arizona, that Miami would take the next logical step toward filling that spot. The next logical step would be to check out the other available free safeties on the market.

The Herald's Jeff Darlington is reporting the Dolphins have not to this moment shown interest in St. Louis Rams restricted free agent O.J. Atogwe. Atogwe was tendered with a right of first refusal contract, meaning the Dolphins wouldn't have to pay draft choice compensation to sign Atogwe.

Another restricted free agent safety is Indy's Antoine Bethea. The guy was a Pro Bowl player, if you recall. The draft pick compensation on him is substantial -- a first round pick. But one would suppose the team could always work a trade with the Colts rather than give up the first-round selection. (Maybe a second-rounder?)

Many of you have asked about Darren Sharper as a Dolphins possibility. He'll be 35 years old in November and the Dolphins didn't show any interest in him last year when he was a year younger and available cheaply. This one would not make sense at this time.

Pittsburgh's Ryan Clark is available. Good player. Make sense. The Herald is looking into whether he is on the radar or not.

The one that got away met with the press corps that covers his new team today.

Safety Antrel Rolle was introduced to the New York media today. (Yes, some teams actually have press conferences to introduce their new players.) Rolle talked about what type of player the Giants are getting.

"I think I can make any type of play, to be honest" he said. "Not to sound cocky or arrogant, but that's just the way I am. I'm never going into a game and deny myself an opportunity. If it presents itself, I think I can definitely make the play."

Rolle talked about how the Giants made him feel comfortable and reminded him how it was being recruited at the University of Miami. The Miami native said he felt "like home" with the Giants.

Let me tell you another reason Rolle isn't actually playing at home, as in for the Dolphins. MONEY!

The Giants blew the Dolphins away on the cash front. The Dolphins offered Rolle a deal averaging $6 million per season. The Giants paid Rolle a deal that averages $7.4 million per season.

And the Dolphins didn't come in second for Rolle. They were third.

Rolle said the Arizona Cardinals were willing to match the Giants offer. The Dolphins clearly were not.

Check back often as I will have the latest updates from The Herald team right here. And follow me on twitter. Also, follow Darlington on twitter.

Rob,

He was reliant in that he looked to run first. He also wasn't ever a full time starter for any stretch until late in his career. The guy ran for 2429 yards, as a QB. And when you bring up mobile QBs you don't mention him. So it is not my thinking that he was a runner, he was a runner. 2429 yards.

And I mentioned him reminding me of a player who IS on the Fins, so it had relevance. Man, always have to argue about something.

Mark in Toronto,

I know he use to be able to move and may have had some wheels but, his career stats prove he wasn't or didn't end up being a rushing QB per se.

If the Fins hang onto Thigpen I think it will be related to their desire to get use out of his movement skills much more than Gannon was asked to in my opinion.

That's all I'm saying.

Cheers,

Marino,

Gannon who? ;)

Look for Tyler to be traded for a draft pick, Id say the same for White but he's not that good nor will he be in the future, The fins fu@ked up on last years #2.....

Bootang,

I don't always argue. You stated Gannon was a running QB and with and relied heavily on he legs at some point in time.

I simply pointed out that ANY QB that has a 15.6 - 15.9 average rushing yards per game is not... if only in my book. He was a guy that played for a lot of years and so a little bit of rushing in 157 games played would naturally pile up over time. I think other people would agree, whats the flap?

I'm not arguing it... I said as much in my last post to you, read it and relax.

Cheers,

Though I will say Pat plays big for his size, The guy is fearless.....maybe he could transfer that to one guy that wears #19......

rob and bootang

yall go to timeout and let it go

Cuban,

White needs to return punts and kickoffs.

cuban,

Let's see what Pat lloks like another year older and through a very intensive NFL style workout program. Maybe they can plump him up from Ginn size to Culpepper size!! I heard he has been talking to Fergie, LOL.

Whatever happens I hope his college arm comes back... at least some. Workouts, better diet, gloves, accupuncture, witch doctor I don't care how...just let him play better. =)

Cheers,

TN, The man would be killed.........

I love how alot of people on here keep talking about how Antrel Rolle is overrated because he played in the "weak NFC West." Yet, him and Dansby played on the same team and nobody's talking about that. I'm not saying you guys are wrong about Rolle. it's just interesting IMO.

he will be killed anyway

What is he like 6 foot and 195 lbs??? he looks like my insurance guy that works for all-state.... Maybe he has a future in the insurance business...lol...

he may own an insuace company if he takes many more hits like clark laid on him

Cuban, I'm with All State too.

Slow news day.

Ron B,

Yeah that would be logic that would not make sense too much.

Let's see if Clark winds up a Fin or if they just are gonna promote from within and draft?

With the year Sharper had and having him tuen Miami's game vs the Saints I would be suprised if they are not at least mulling it hard. I think he winds up a Saint as I think they will match any quasi-reasonable offer.

Cheers,

Bootang, might as well give it up. Some people believe popular opinion instead of thinking for themselves. It's the way it's always been. Or same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same it ever was.

Ron, It's true that there defense was ranked 22 but miami's was worse,I think without dansby theyd been a lot worse, he was there Zach Thomas of there team, he can play and has already improved the dolphin "D" just by signing, then again the defense improved greatly when they cut Porter,Wilson, Adoyle.....

mama maria is cooking now some meatballs and porter going to the banck to deposite his last pay check .

Ok TNPhinFan,

I let it go. No Google War here. =)

What are your thoughts regarding McClain now that Dansby is in the mix? Do you think they told him to run around saying he will be playing next to Crowder at ILB as a smokescreen?

Do you feel like he won't make it to #12 and will get drafted earlier?

Or is it that the Fins just didn't want him so they made a trade for Dansby?

Cheers,

CoCo, Your post the other day about Beef steak Charles, the Tropicaire drive in and the Serpentarium, I also want to add in the Dixie drive inn between 152 and 144 st along with Tony Roma's in south miami and brother's three on 136 street in the falls area.... Good times......

yeeeeeeees, the cuban is talking .......good times .

Yazzi,

And giver him a B Bond's forehead? LOL

Aloco, why do you only post when I'am on????? why????

thigpen is going nowhere, the brass loves him at 2

I do not know, but, for now we have to assume he will play ilb. They have more options in the draft to draft best player of need in 1st, and 2nd and 3rd rounds.

I think best available at position ( no more than 2 olbs selected)
1. olb/nt
2. olb, nt,or wr
3. olb,nt,or wr
4. nt,te,or wr
6. ol,rb,db (3picks best available at each pick)
7. ol

cuban,

do you believe in the first love from the first sight ?

And giver him a B Bond's forehead? LOL

Posted by: Rob in OC | March 07, 2010 at 06:35 PM

At least he'd be able to take a crushing blow like he did against pitt., that was one of the most brutal hits i"ve seen........

thigpen is the MANNNNNNN, THE OTHER QB'S ARE JUST CLOSE TO AVERAGE .

white will never do anything for us, bad draft pick

PAT WHITE WILL SURPRISE ALL OF US NEXT SEASON .WATCH .

NFL Network said the other day "there is a very high turnout for Dolphins off season workout". LOL these are not "mandatory" but I don't think u play for Parcells if u don't participate

Aloco, Please go eat a eggplant sub... it's better for you and you'll loose wight so you can get into that man-bikini for the summer......

His Skeleton MUST GROW.

So that he can
properly THROW!

CUBAN,

VERY FUNNY .

Cuban,

Ahh, Tony Romo's....still there! You remember the Bodega on US1 S Miami? Great food but my girlfriend and I were so poor, it was big deal to go there. Beefsteak Charlies did the TV special....Thursday night?? All the beer, sangria, salad bar you can eat. Those were the days.

Tebow watch...

Wilson: Tebow to work out for Bills, Seahawks

There goes our chance for a 5th QB:) lol

His limbs must THICKEN a BIT...

So he can take a HIT!

TNPhinFan,

Hmmm, I see your draft is devoid of safety help until the 6th round... you going with Culver / Clemons?

I think the Fins could suprise with a RB or TE choice higher than 4rth. Tate, Gerhart or Hardesty should all go before the 4rth round and the Fin may take a stab if they think they get the "Need Position" later on with more value.

The most intriguing TE to me is Jimmy Graham as he had a great combine but has so little experience. It will be interesting to see who picks him where. I think he wil be a serious receiving threat in time. I could see him become a poor man's Gonzales.

Cheers,

CoCo, How about the Marlin club?? One South next to Tony Romas in south miami,Pen-Rods on south beach??? GREAT TIMES...........

COCOM GREAT POST

COCO, GREAT POST .

Coco, There's still one place left from those old days and I went there in Feb. last time i was in miami, Foxes in south miami, still has the same staff and carpet they had in the 80s lol.... Still had great food though.....

CUBAN,

WHY YOU ALWAYS POST WHEN I AM ON ?

rob,

i think miami picks up fs in fa or goes with what they got. what concerns me about drafting a free safety is he is the one that makes the secondary calls. It would be difficult for a rookie to do that. That is what we missed last year after we let our fs (can not remember his name)go in 2009.

we let goodman and hill go, both played very well for denver

Jimmy Graham needs H.G.H Too!

He could be Seven foot tall @ 285!

Yazzi, He still has bad hands.......

cuban,

I think most were thinking at least ko'd and possible paralysis until he moved after that hit. It was a killer shot he took.

That's the reason they teach the hook slide, being aware and getting down to avoid that punishment. I believe he will learn from that hit. The NFL defenders are trying to blow him up and now he knows 1st hand.

I'm looking forward to see what he brings in his second season. If he ends up busting out more or just being a flatliner. He already shows more heart than Ginn with regards to contact it's just that he needs to dodge it more. Ginn is probably trying to teach him "fetal-ese" a family tradition of self preservation.

Cheers,

Cuban, you don't mean Fox's Lounge do you?

LOL , ROB.....at the "FETAL DIVE" that Ginn's perfected......

Yes Coco.....

TNPhinFan,

You are thinking of Renaldo Hill. Some positions do take time to learn but that won;t stop the trifecta from tabbing a FS or NT type early on if they think S E. Thomas or DT/NT Williams is that good.

They would just have to learn on the fly and hurry up to speed.

I would most prefer Weatherspoon, Spiller or BG in the 1st from a talent standpoint. Of course trade back is most advantages but you need a dance partner.

Cheers,

clark is in miami ...darlington at airport

Just over 46 days until the Draft starts gentlemen. Wooooo!!!

least we should sign clark tomm, that will help us at safety for next couple years. hes 30

clark says he hopes it goes well hopes this is his only fa visit

No, never went there. We lived in Perrine and usually went up to Miami to eat out. Do you remember that old movie theater downtown....can't remember the name, Went to see 'Man who fell to earth' doing 'shrooms in mid-'70s
