« Thoughts going into the 2nd day of free agency | Main | The Pennington contract covers all the bases »

(Mostly) quiet on Miami Dolphins front

Why am I working today?

Bill Parcells isn't. He spent Saturday morning in Jupiter, FL. at the shared training facility of the Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals. Parcells is tight with Cards manager Tony LaRussa and has a healthy respect for Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez, also.Tuna marlins

So the Big Tuna is taking in a spring training game this afternoon. Of course, he has his phone with him and is in contact with the home office back in Davie. But this all suggests today doesn't compare with Friday's start of free agency for electric activity.

The team should announce the signing of Karlos Dansby later today. The fact is the NFL transactions wire has him as signed already.

[Update 2:30 p.m.: The contracts have been signed and the club is expected to announce the signing of Dansby and Chad Pennington within the next 90 minutes or so.]

[Update 4 p.m. :The Dolphins did not have any UFA visits today that they are reporting to the NFL. And the Dansby contract, in fact, will be signed in a few minutes. Last-second language stuff. He's on the way to the facility to get it done.]

One would assume the team is making calls on it's second wave of free agents -- assuming there are any.

It stands to reason that as safety was a priority as soon as Antrel Rolle (the one that got away) was cut loose by Arizona, that Miami would take the next logical step toward filling that spot. The next logical step would be to check out the other available free safeties on the market.

The Herald's Jeff Darlington is reporting the Dolphins have not to this moment shown interest in St. Louis Rams restricted free agent O.J. Atogwe. Atogwe was tendered with a right of first refusal contract, meaning the Dolphins wouldn't have to pay draft choice compensation to sign Atogwe.

Another restricted free agent safety is Indy's Antoine Bethea. The guy was a Pro Bowl player, if you recall. The draft pick compensation on him is substantial -- a first round pick. But one would suppose the team could always work a trade with the Colts rather than give up the first-round selection. (Maybe a second-rounder?)

Many of you have asked about Darren Sharper as a Dolphins possibility. He'll be 35 years old in November and the Dolphins didn't show any interest in him last year when he was a year younger and available cheaply. This one would not make sense at this time.

Pittsburgh's Ryan Clark is available. Good player. Make sense. The Herald is looking into whether he is on the radar or not.

The one that got away met with the press corps that covers his new team today.

Safety Antrel Rolle was introduced to the New York media today. (Yes, some teams actually have press conferences to introduce their new players.) Rolle talked about what type of player the Giants are getting.

"I think I can make any type of play, to be honest" he said. "Not to sound cocky or arrogant, but that's just the way I am. I'm never going into a game and deny myself an opportunity. If it presents itself, I think I can definitely make the play."

Rolle talked about how the Giants made him feel comfortable and reminded him how it was being recruited at the University of Miami. The Miami native said he felt "like home" with the Giants.

Let me tell you another reason Rolle isn't actually playing at home, as in for the Dolphins. MONEY!

The Giants blew the Dolphins away on the cash front. The Dolphins offered Rolle a deal averaging $6 million per season. The Giants paid Rolle a deal that averages $7.4 million per season.

And the Dolphins didn't come in second for Rolle. They were third.

Rolle said the Arizona Cardinals were willing to match the Giants offer. The Dolphins clearly were not.

Check back often as I will have the latest updates from The Herald team right here. And follow me on twitter. Also, follow Darlington on twitter.

Yeah , that was it. clark has cickle cell and had his spleen removed. Clark and the team would have to monitor that.

I got f***ed by a woman.

Terrell Owens arrived at fll 3 hours ago is staying at westin diplomat in Hallandale has limo picking him up. At 1030 am taking him to dolphin headquarters to talk.

Yeah...that was Hot! LOL

There's nothing I like better then to sit down in a comfortable chair, crack open a cold one....and watch two Enormous woman argue and beat on each other in an 900 sq foot house!

(not)

I guess creativity takes on many forms in this world....

Not only that James , She's your ex-wife !!!

True true - the only problem with that is that the other team puts the "poison pill" (say, Atogwe gets a $10 million bonus on top of the already negotiated signing bonus if he plays more than 4 games in St. Louis his first year -kind of like what Minnesota did with Steve Hutchinson and then Seattle did with Nate Burleson and even New England was going to do with Wes Welker) and there is no way St. Louis matches.

I know the trifecta let us down with Gibril last year and Wilford the year before; but I have to believe that with Nolan on board - they are doing their homework on all the possible safeties available and maybe they saw something they didn't like with Atogwe. Their supposed interest in Bethea speaks to them doing the homework.

I'm with you - I don't think Clark is that great in coverage; but he is most definitely an upgrade from Wilson and keeps their options open for the draft. Bell is not terrible in coverage either. I do worry that we have 2 strong safety types as starters - but with Culver and Clemons and maybe a rookie at some point in the draft the team is much improved already from where they were last year.

At least we have to give the Dolphins an "A" for trying to improve the team.

Sorry for the long post.

LMFAO !!!!! MERV. Now that was F'N Funny !!

My locker hurts something bad.

Bobbyd takes it up the arse 12 times.Inches not included.

They're considering a 5'10 guy that has no SPLEEN!?????

Noooo he's not a 'stop gap'...of course not!
.
.

Just because, I think the NFL outlawed " the poison pill. Teams can't do that anymore. I agree with the rest of your post. It's late . I'm out.

Good night fellow Dolphins fans - should have a new player (or 2) by tomorrow night!

Now that Paul Tagliabue has in effect, ended Furguson's career, Ireland and co. will have to address NT as their most immediate problem.

In a linear brain, that is the next, most pressing hole to fill.

Ferguson/Furguson, tomato/tomaaato

Fergi got busted with what???

They really should pick their Minority Owners better!

Fergi's blood level tested high after one too many hormone ridden chick-fil-a sandwiches.

Jenna Jameson visits MD, Mini-me and doesn't like what she hears.

armando... Any chance the fins try & kick merling inside to nose tackle? He seems pretty stout vs the run & may be with fergie out 8games could be a descent option..does merling have the make up/toughness to do it? Just a thought from a worried dolphan.. Armando follow me on twiitter la213tbone

Merling, thigpen, and a future mid round pick to the Browns for shaun Rogers-----just thrown that out there

shaun Rogers is a very good player but isnt great---
A great player performs regardless of their team/situation

Very good players need to play in a good system on a good team for you to get the most out of him---he is one of the most gifted NT and he is only 30---(which is fine for that position)

I would pull the trigger he is on the trading block and they want a QB---

Detriot then cleveland---he just needs to be in a good system---

The Dolphins move into first round and draft WRs Thomas and Benn. Please lord let it be true.

Good morning phinland. WTF is up?

Armando we need our Dolphins fix bad.

Armando is on the beach.

Looks like we are about to get Clark. I'm content with that, but not excited. I would like to see Clemons, Culver and a rookie battle it out. I was hoping for a better cover man at the position. I do like the fact that he hits like a freight train though.

Guys
Think about the Jets D. They are great against the run and have the best and another top 10 CBs. How do we score on them without a stud receiver. Ronnie Brown is not even running yet. You attack a D like that with attacking them up the middle and also with play action and going over the top. Tell me how they do that without any weapons. I still say go after Marshall.

Guys, Add Harris and that fits a percells defense to a tee, smart and agressive.....

'Mando
Where r you?!?

armando is working hard people , wait another 20 minutes .

Any word on what Marshall is doing?

sign clark, and bryant.draft spiller #12,(the best offensive player in the draft)and one of the best pass catcher's as well. take cody in the second round, and the best olb in the third.add depth to the o-line/d-line with the rest of the picks.this would make us the team to beat in the afc......IMO

A third and 4th for Boldin was a steal, especially since they got a 5th in return. Plus, had we pulled the trigger, we would of gotten a compensatory pick or two this year b/c of who we lost.

It was a missed opportunity.

As for Rolle, no way he is worth that money, would of been nice to have him, but not at that price.

I will always trust Tuna, but they need to address the offense and they need to do it yesterday.

Defense no longer wins Championships like it used to.

I would hope Tuna isn't going to rely on a rookie WR to be his playmaker. Especially in the division they are in. If not Marshall then sign Bryant as vertical threat.

D, I agree that although it is important to improve the defense, you have to score in this league to win. They need playmakers on offense. The Wildcat is great but it is a ball control style O. Sparano always talks about "chunk yardage" well it ain't gonna happen with the wildcat. NEED PLAYMAKERS!!

The #12 pick will be Big Dan Williams as NT.....and the Defense is good to go! Assuming they seal the deal on Clark.
Next up, second round pick for a WR....and or a trade for a veteran WR....there are still a couple out there decent enough to have an impact. Might be nice to have some more depth at NT too....

Truefan, Marshall is home scratching his ass trying to figure out why Seattle is the only team interested in a guy who beats women and is a major disruption in the locker room...Hopefully Seattle signs him so he can spend the next five years catching passes for a team that sux...

'Maandooo?

Bobby12, Did you know that the great north-west(Seattle in particular) Host some of the most nortoris serial killers???? Ted(Fry Baby Fry)Bundy and the green river killer, responsible for over 48 confirmed deaths... It seems like it would be a perfect fit for Brandon(What did you say Bit@H)Marshall And maybe Next year for ray(The killer)Lewis..... just saying....

mando is coming soonnnnnnnn

Mando are you sleeping in or what? Give us some news before it actually breaks all over the web. Clark signing seems imminent, but how about other FA visits this week. Wake up and smell the coffee beans and give us our news.

Armando' what's it like having a few hundred people stalking you at work?

From Peter King -

The three worst decisions teams made:

1. Ryan Clark being unemployed. I understand teams don't want to pay real money for a big-hitting safety who might have a short shelf life in the NFL. But there are few players in the NFL in the back end who hit as ferociously as Clark and who lead as responsibly and conscientiously as he does. I think he'd fit well with the Dolphins, the site of his visit today. And I also think the Steelers will miss him badly if he leaves.

Cuban, ur right!!! What a waste of talent huh??? The guy can catch a ball but has zero positive character traits...playing pro football is great but when u can't get a NY, Indy, New Orleans, NE, or teams that are desperate for playmakers at the WR position to even look at you, there is a major problem...you know this guy is POISON...

I'm telling you, Armando is slacking. Don't we cut former stars who are on the decline around here? Especially when we have hungry young rookies, like Chris Cordero, chomping at the bit?

NEW BLOG UP!!!

Like I said bobby,His criminal record should flourish in Seattle...lol, not really but a nervous lol.... new blog up....

Ok, he finally posted. Let's see if he goes all Joey Porter on me.
