(Mostly) quiet on Miami Dolphins front

Why am I working today?

Bill Parcells isn't. He spent Saturday morning in Jupiter, FL. at the shared training facility of the Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals. Parcells is tight with Cards manager Tony LaRussa and has a healthy respect for Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez, also.Tuna marlins

So the Big Tuna is taking in a spring training game this afternoon. Of course, he has his phone with him and is in contact with the home office back in Davie. But this all suggests today doesn't compare with Friday's start of free agency for electric activity.

The team should announce the signing of Karlos Dansby later today. The fact is the NFL transactions wire has him as signed already.

[Update 2:30 p.m.: The contracts have been signed and the club is expected to announce the signing of Dansby and Chad Pennington within the next 90 minutes or so.]

[Update 4 p.m. :The Dolphins did not have any UFA visits today that they are reporting to the NFL. And the Dansby contract, in fact, will be signed in a few minutes. Last-second language stuff. He's on the way to the facility to get it done.]

One would assume the team is making calls on it's second wave of free agents -- assuming there are any.

It stands to reason that as safety was a priority as soon as Antrel Rolle (the one that got away) was cut loose by Arizona, that Miami would take the next logical step toward filling that spot. The next logical step would be to check out the other available free safeties on the market.

The Herald's Jeff Darlington is reporting the Dolphins have not to this moment shown interest in St. Louis Rams restricted free agent O.J. Atogwe. Atogwe was tendered with a right of first refusal contract, meaning the Dolphins wouldn't have to pay draft choice compensation to sign Atogwe.

Another restricted free agent safety is Indy's Antoine Bethea. The guy was a Pro Bowl player, if you recall. The draft pick compensation on him is substantial -- a first round pick. But one would suppose the team could always work a trade with the Colts rather than give up the first-round selection. (Maybe a second-rounder?)

Many of you have asked about Darren Sharper as a Dolphins possibility. He'll be 35 years old in November and the Dolphins didn't show any interest in him last year when he was a year younger and available cheaply. This one would not make sense at this time.

Pittsburgh's Ryan Clark is available. Good player. Make sense. The Herald is looking into whether he is on the radar or not.

The one that got away met with the press corps that covers his new team today.

Safety Antrel Rolle was introduced to the New York media today. (Yes, some teams actually have press conferences to introduce their new players.) Rolle talked about what type of player the Giants are getting.

"I think I can make any type of play, to be honest" he said. "Not to sound cocky or arrogant, but that's just the way I am. I'm never going into a game and deny myself an opportunity. If it presents itself, I think I can definitely make the play."

Rolle talked about how the Giants made him feel comfortable and reminded him how it was being recruited at the University of Miami. The Miami native said he felt "like home" with the Giants.

Let me tell you another reason Rolle isn't actually playing at home, as in for the Dolphins. MONEY!

The Giants blew the Dolphins away on the cash front. The Dolphins offered Rolle a deal averaging $6 million per season. The Giants paid Rolle a deal that averages $7.4 million per season.

And the Dolphins didn't come in second for Rolle. They were third.

Rolle said the Arizona Cardinals were willing to match the Giants offer. The Dolphins clearly were not.

Check back often as I will have the latest updates from The Herald team right here. And follow me on twitter. Also, follow Darlington on twitter.

Why don't you think the Dolphins have tried to strike a deal yet at a cheap number for Antonio Bryant?

hi mando
including us which team scored an A on free agency?
Great job on this blog ,as always.

Armando, If we get a WR via FA and 1 in the draft who do we cut? Do we keep 6 WRs? Do we try to trade someone? What are your thoughts on who stays and who goes if we get 2 more WRs?

It almost seemed like Miami was doing the same thing with Brown that Denver did with Marshall. Swing him like bait and maybe hope the interested party would trade.

Armando, who in ur opinion is on the offensive chopping block??? There should be some bloodletting on offense too for a couple of non-producers

phinphan1013 again my name is robert n who could miami trade at getting more picks n when are you doing ur 1st mock draft?

Armando, thanks for all the posting and twittering last few days. It has been a lot of fun.

And is Thigpen on the trading block now???

Robert, I appreciate you following me on twitter.

On Chambers, I think the Dolphins need to do better than that.

Look, the team keeps only 5 WRs. Bess and Hartline will definitely be two of those. they want to see if Pat Turner is a player or not, so that's three guys.

Ginn probably stays because he's young and is a speed guy so that's four.

They're likely going to draft one or two WRs so that's six. Camarillo will compete that's seven.

Are you going to sign a guy that might not be much of an upgrade and might then get cut?

They have to be wise.

Armando, do you think the dolphins are interested in ryan clark?

I don't want Sharper on the team. He's older and I'm always leery of these guys who have big seasons and who just won a Super Bowl ring. I'm not convinced he's going to be as hungry and I also think he's going to get a big payday from someone, maybe even New Orleans.

For the guy who said that Dansby is VERY under-rated, I think your NUTS!! If you know anything about football, then you already know the kind of player that Dansby is!! He will be a very good player for us but he's been paid NINE million dollars and there was competition for his services. Teams know the kind of player he is and he's well-regarded. I think to say he's vastly over-rated is quite a stretch!!

Armando,
What are you hearing about Antonio Bryant?

#1 in Montreal,

I definitely hope the Dolphins don't fool themselves into going with the same group of WRs. I doubt they will.

As I said, I think they'll draft one or two guys, depending on free agency. If they get say an Antonio Bryant (only a rumor so far) then they don't need multiple draft picks. But they do need at least one.

Any movement on the Jason Taylor front? I still can't see him playing anywhere but here next year

good point I forgot we have five n I agree with bess n hartline but we need good players n you said boldin thing was bad but he was 30 n wat WR are thete in the draft tht miami may look at other than dez asuming he is gone?listening to jeff on wqam n he mentioned antonio but he scares me?n 2 pick 4 boldin is 2 much?

batman, the reports on Dez Bryant are scary. I don't think the Dolphins would use the No. 12 pick on him if those reports are true.

I still say need a playmaker on offensive with our 1st pick

By the way, the reports on Bryant are not like the ones last year on Vontae. Apples and oranges there.

Bryant reportedly was late to games. Late to practices. Skipped treatment sesssions.

He had a TERRIBLE childhood. Family members on drugs, living with other people, bouncing house to house. Tough.

It's already tough keeping up with the Jets and Pats

Armando, is there any market for Ginn? like you said they keep 5 WRs so I don't see room for Ginn and Camarillo. Could we get something or do we need to just cut them?

Armando

Do you know when teams are awarded compensatory picks prior to the draft, and if Miami is going to be receiving any?

Thanks

Armando, I would think that Camarillo might be the odd man out. Love the guy but I'm not certain he brings any uniqueness to the receiving corps. I think Hartline is a younger and cheaper version. Just LOVE what this guy brings to the table!! Would Camarillo have ANY trade value at all?

Will they give Turner the year to show he belongs or do you think they might cut him in camp. I would think that upgrading the wide receiving corps, either internally or externally should be one of the FO's biggest priorities.

Just, nothing new on Taylor. He won't sign until near draft time or maybe afterward.

Marvin, Bryant is looking for a team. Maybe Cincinnati. Would like to play in Miami, obviously.

But the Dolphins haven't set up any visit with him as of right now.

Mando, how agressive are the Dolphins after Ryan Clark? personally, I rather the Dolphins spend a draft pick or promote from within for this position. There aren't any elite talents, in my opinion, at this position available in free agency.

What other players do you NOT see on the team next year already on the roster - either trade or released?

Don’t know bout ya’ll but I’m very happy with the moves the Phins have made thus far.

So who would be better, Dez Bryant or marshall?

I hear dez is really lazy n I would not take him I think you need to do a blog piece on dez so they can hear how crazy it is I've read some artilces on him!

El danny, there is no interest in Ryan Clark as of yet.

Folks, remember we're only on the second day of free agency. No interest today doesn't mean there won't be interest next week.

But as of right now, no interest.

Armando,
Can you see the Phins drafting Joe Haden if he falls to 12 & he's the best available on their list? Would Vontae or Smith work at FS?

If they worked a deal for Antonio Bryant and drafted say Mike Williams(my personal fav in the 4th rd), then I think we'd be very set at WR competition in camp.
Camarillio and possibly Ginn being on the outs most likely.

Are Langford and Merling good enough or do we need to hit that area in the draft again?

bobby, as someone told me, "Practically everyone is on the trade block."

Teams are sniffing around and I reported the Bills have some interest. But nothing serious yet.

The Dolphins like Thigpen. I think he's better than Pat White.

Armando, I know you've talked about this before but how much do you think the Dansby signing lessens the likelihood of drafting McClain? I am personally on side with drafting Dan Williams or one of the safeties with the 12th pick. I think you can make a case that taking Williams at 12 might be a reach but if they are unable to trade back I think he fills a big need on this team and I am totally OK with taking him at 12. Thoughts?......

Rolle would have been nice to get but to make him the highest paid Safety in the NFL is just ridiculous! I guess there is not such thing as loyalty to your hometown anymore. As far as I'm concerned Rolle is a sellout!

CamCameron Starks and Langford are good enough. Merling is hit or miss on games.

Robert, a lot of folks have asked me to do a mock draft. I've never done one. I might do it this year if you guys actually want it.

but that would happen closer to the draft.

Mando,

Who is your favorite draft guru over the years(if you have one)?

don't even think about drafting haden tht would be a waste I would take a NT before haden?

mando do think the browns might be interested in trading for ronnie brown they looking to upgrade all the positions on there team i am guessing

HvK, the Dolphins wouldn't HAVE to cut anyone right away. They can keep the group and let the situation play out in training camp.

Competition, competition, competition!

I believe Running back is a need...maybe not right this second, but we all have to remember that the Dolphins have two running backs coming off injuries and another retiring after this season.

I would think the Dolphins would want to do something with that TE position which certainly not up to par...Fasano needs to move back to the other side and hopefully get someone more aggresive as the "stronger" TE

I don't like trading draft picks for players - I am glad we stay put- but the money to Dansby is a little frightening. Bings into question the selection of Pat White last year. We could have drafted a pretty good LB in that slot.

bandwagon,

You cannot possibly want me to grade free agency after one day? Let's see how it plays out, bud. Ask me that question in a couple of weeks. Fair?

miami1354,
The Browns would be more a canidate for Thigpen than Brown. They are said to be looking at Carr and Seneca Wallace right now. Even McNabb and Hasselbeck was mentioned a few days ago.

yea we really want a mock you can get jeff 2 help you! And I heard 4rm you I think that miami gets compensatory picks any way miami signs elvis dumerville and uses a 1 and a compensatory or a 3 for him I would be thrilled if we did that?

Armando, I would love to see u do a mock draft but you know ur gonna get ripped to shreds on ur own blog, right?? LOL

Sprock, the cheap numbers don't happen the first day or the second day. They happen later.

Next week, you'll see the second wave begin. That's when the cheap numbers start to happen. If you jump out the first day, agents will want to get MAJOR $$$$$.

305,

You're kidding me right? Rolle's a sellout for going to the highest bidder? You and I would do the same thing. We weren't even the second best bid.....the Cards were prepared to match what the Giants offered. Let's face it.....this guy did us a FAVOUR by not accepting our offer. That's insane money for a guy who is not even the best at his position in the NFL.

When you compare what other teams spendt yesterday...Dansby was a reasonable expense.

hey mando i may be in the minority but im not sold on this o-line and think it also can use attention in fa or draft. Is there any possibilities on getting a couple o-linemen for competition this off season?

Yes, bobby, I know. And then the little geeks on the other blogs would join in, too.

Otogwe nice guys... I know you guys don't even know because he plays for the rams and the only one you know from that roster is Steven Jackson. lol

Dez Bryant just needs a babysitter.

Looks like Seattle is not going to give an offer for Marshall tomorrow...thats smart.
Make Denver sweat...and they will lower the price...keep your eye's open Dolphins.

Am I the only one who thinks TE is not a big need? I think OLB, NT, WR, and S are much more important. We have Fasano (can block and had a bad year), Haynos (big target needs work blocking), Sperry (showed a lot of potential), and Nalbone (a project, who knows)

Robert, I don't think the Dolphins chase Dumervil. Too expensive. Waaaay too expensive.

And folks saying that Brandon Graham is too small at 6-1, what do you say about Dumervil at 5-11?

so if you need help we will tke care of the other geeks n look at it this way more ppl 2 ur blog n then it becoms national! N wat about the elvis dumerville thing I proposed?
