(Mostly) quiet on Miami Dolphins front

Why am I working today?

Bill Parcells isn't. He spent Saturday morning in Jupiter, FL. at the shared training facility of the Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals. Parcells is tight with Cards manager Tony LaRussa and has a healthy respect for Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez, also.Tuna marlins

So the Big Tuna is taking in a spring training game this afternoon. Of course, he has his phone with him and is in contact with the home office back in Davie. But this all suggests today doesn't compare with Friday's start of free agency for electric activity.

The team should announce the signing of Karlos Dansby later today. The fact is the NFL transactions wire has him as signed already.

[Update 2:30 p.m.: The contracts have been signed and the club is expected to announce the signing of Dansby and Chad Pennington within the next 90 minutes or so.]

[Update 4 p.m. :The Dolphins did not have any UFA visits today that they are reporting to the NFL. And the Dansby contract, in fact, will be signed in a few minutes. Last-second language stuff. He's on the way to the facility to get it done.]

One would assume the team is making calls on it's second wave of free agents -- assuming there are any.

It stands to reason that as safety was a priority as soon as Antrel Rolle (the one that got away) was cut loose by Arizona, that Miami would take the next logical step toward filling that spot. The next logical step would be to check out the other available free safeties on the market.

The Herald's Jeff Darlington is reporting the Dolphins have not to this moment shown interest in St. Louis Rams restricted free agent O.J. Atogwe. Atogwe was tendered with a right of first refusal contract, meaning the Dolphins wouldn't have to pay draft choice compensation to sign Atogwe.

Another restricted free agent safety is Indy's Antoine Bethea. The guy was a Pro Bowl player, if you recall. The draft pick compensation on him is substantial -- a first round pick. But one would suppose the team could always work a trade with the Colts rather than give up the first-round selection. (Maybe a second-rounder?)

Many of you have asked about Darren Sharper as a Dolphins possibility. He'll be 35 years old in November and the Dolphins didn't show any interest in him last year when he was a year younger and available cheaply. This one would not make sense at this time.

Pittsburgh's Ryan Clark is available. Good player. Make sense. The Herald is looking into whether he is on the radar or not.

The one that got away met with the press corps that covers his new team today.

Safety Antrel Rolle was introduced to the New York media today. (Yes, some teams actually have press conferences to introduce their new players.) Rolle talked about what type of player the Giants are getting.

"I think I can make any type of play, to be honest" he said. "Not to sound cocky or arrogant, but that's just the way I am. I'm never going into a game and deny myself an opportunity. If it presents itself, I think I can definitely make the play."

Rolle talked about how the Giants made him feel comfortable and reminded him how it was being recruited at the University of Miami. The Miami native said he felt "like home" with the Giants.

Let me tell you another reason Rolle isn't actually playing at home, as in for the Dolphins. MONEY!

The Giants blew the Dolphins away on the cash front. The Dolphins offered Rolle a deal averaging $6 million per season. The Giants paid Rolle a deal that averages $7.4 million per season.

And the Dolphins didn't come in second for Rolle. They were third.

Rolle said the Arizona Cardinals were willing to match the Giants offer. The Dolphins clearly were not.

Check back often as I will have the latest updates from The Herald team right here. And follow me on twitter. Also, follow Darlington on twitter.

I forgot to add that he is available as the bengals have released him.

NJ PHIN FAN:

If he WAS there...
he was probably used as an 'Extra' sitting in the whirlpool!
.

When Vernon Carey caught Ginn in the parking lot to bring him the dropped cupcake he immediately jumped across the painted parking spot line and when that didn't work he curled up into a fetal position next to his car.

Vernon Carey bent down and asked Ginn:

"Hey Teddy, you gonna eat this?"

Just got in......anyone bitching because we "lost" Kerri Rhodes?

You have to love the fact we find guys that love to play football. That like playing with other guys that love to play football. All these morons bashing our front office are going to be trying real hard to fit on the bandwagon once this team really gets rolling. People do not understand the concept of 'the right 53' and if they had any clue, they would very clearly see what it is we are trying to build. And you know what I really love, Parcells is good at doing this, and then leaving. Well when he leaves, we will still have Tony and Jeff here, and they will very much understand the philosophy of how Bill Parcells runs a football organization, from top to bottom.

Inimounts,

If you recall we won the East with an inept offense 2 years ago because we had an opportunistic defense.

This year we struggled because our Defense was inept because the powers at be dismantlement the 2nd and 3 levels of the D. They thought they were upgrading the D which was pretty good and wound up killing it. The biggest loss was our Lb, CB and FS, that, wound up in Denver and ROTH. We did not have the Depth to cut loose a gelling D. I retrospect our FA pickups last year should have been Offense and Draft depth on both sides.

As I have said we are a few years away from being favorites to win the East year in and year out and making a deep playoff run. Anything could happen I know. I hope it does, but, realistically, we still are rebuilding not retooling.

Lauvernius Coles sucks

Jets suck

MIAMI ISN'T GETTING BRANDON MARSHALL !!!!!! GEEZ !! AND LAVERNIOUS COLES SUCKS !!!!!

when nj goes all caps i know the stupid must be all over the prior pages.

do we need a wr? yes. will the f.o. trade a one or a one and a three or any high picks for a diva wr?

hell no.

next topic.

Lets carefully analyse this thing so far....Weve got Dansby...its a great move...but will that actually make a difference...is he a game changer??...I beleive not.He will stiffen up the MLB and let Chowder do less exacting work...but this move will not give us an extra 4 games per annum...

The Boldin situation was sheer stupidity on the part of the TRIFECTA...the acquiring of a STUD WR ( and Boldin is till in the upper echelon ), would i beleive have added 4 games to us this year....Its points that win games..POINTS...chunk yards chunk yards....they have been harping on about it for 2 LONG YEARS....CHUNK YARDS...

Marshall for a 1st is also so OBVIOUS that its silly really...he instantly upgrades our whole passing game...we become ELITE at passing....read it...ELITE...and with our running game sputtering all last season, we need that upgrade....Now either Boldin or Marshall was the marquee move we needed to make..it was the IMPORTANT move we needed....Dansby is an excellent move, but wont move us from 7-9...which is not mediocre...mediocre starts at 8-8...we are BELOW mediocre...we are bad..so we need a lot of upgrading...
The Boldin / Marshall miss is indicative of some DUMB thinking the FO has been doing...example...why cut Wilson and now we have no replacement...is Clemmons ready?..maybe..a draft pick??..may work out, may not...I agree Wilson was shocking, but why not cut him after you are happy with your replacement??...its patently dumb really..

Now what?...ok..we still have no game breaking chunk yard gaining weapon...NO WEAPONS means 8-8 again...mediocre...drafting WR's is a crap shoot...it may put us back 3 years they dont work out...fixing the LB situation is also important, but its points that win games....the Boldin loss is CRIMINAL...they should have made that move ( unless they have info re injury)...he is NOT i repeat NOT injury prone...getting a busted jaw during a game is an ACCIDENT...does not make a player injury prone...wish Ginn had those bwalls...

Should have made a move via FA for a stud WR...we still have a chance...Seattle will not give #6 for BM...we should do the deal...Id do it in a heart beat...

Another dumb move...signiung Pennington...what for...Henne is your No1...Thigpen is a GREAT backup and may possibly be BETTER than Henne...White is the odd man out, but the FO wont cut him...so now possiblt we lose Thigpen and CP10 has ONE year left maybe in his body...thats if he is fit this year...then we need a backup QB next year...this move is DUMB..Chad P should be traded or become a QB coach for the Phins....Thigpen will be sacrificed...WRONG WRONG WRONG

Oy Vey !!! no response needed. self explanatory .

bigalfy please spare us

This is what Dansby said in response to the question why he came to Miami: (via Palm Beach Post)

"Why? Bill Parcells is why," he said. "Bill Parcells, and the moves he's making to win a championship and build a dynasty. He builds winners, and for him to bring in 60-some years of experience in the NFL to the defensive side of the ball and the front office — how can I pass on that?"

and this is what he had to say about being a leader:

"I'd love to take on that role," Dansby said, "but it's got to be earned. You can't come in and say, 'I'm the leader.' You have to earn it from the guys who have been here, who have been through the hard times, who have been through the 1-15 (season). I'm up for that challenge."

He is saying all the right things... I like his comments on Parcells and he also had some great things to say about Nolan and that he factored into his decision as well... Good things going down in Dolphins-land

Focus on the positives mann!! We got Dansby!!! We got Bolden, oh wait, damn ravens.

What's the word on Justin Fargas? Can he still get it done. He may be good to have in a rotation if Ronnie is not ready.

Also what about David Martin? Is he healed? Has the relationship with the FO been soiled to the point of no return? Would we even want him?

aloco how is mosi doing? lol

I am running out of things to stir conversation. y'all have a good night.

Carlito,

Reading Dansby say all that is awesome. Put a pricetag on that kinda stuff. You can't.

Boldin was on one hell of a receiving corp, let's see what he does minus Fitzgerald and Breaston. I doubt he will be very good.

Thank you Henne, I believe also Boldin was a product of the players around him. Now grated he is one tough SOB, but just average without Fitzi.

JB my thoughts exactly. He was also very injury prone

we have no one on offense thats a threat to score on any given play.
c.j. spiller could be that type of player to be a threat plus he can be that player that can give you chunk yards. we also need to be more vertical on offense because these 10 to 15 play drives just don't cut it, so a wr who can get deep and not be afraid of contact would be nice,as for ted ginn i would keep him around another year because he does have that special speed, but he is not a number 1 wr, he can be used more like how the saints use henderson(3rd or 4th wr ). as for defense we need more pass-rushers and more speed from our lbs. i do like c.wake and would like to see what mosses or anderson can do now that porter and maybe taylor gone. sean weatherspoon or mcClain would provide the speed we need from our lbs. eric berry would be a nice center fielder in our secondary also.

BP and Company are the sh*t. Just gotta have patience and let them do their thing. Free agency doesn't work when trying to fill many spots. Free Agency is best used when looking for that one or two players that can make a difference and that is what these guys do.

http://www.globe-democrat.com/news/2010/mar/06/nfl-suspends-ryan-tucker-jason-ferguson-eight-game/

John,

I wouldn't count on McClain or Weatherspoon, and I like him. Dansby has already stated he is an inside guy.

I would think they are looking more at the safety position with the first round.

Definitely going to need to draft a Nose Tackle now

Here is a thought that I haven't seen tossed out. I love and appreciate everything Ronnie Brown has done for the Dolphins when healthy but would it be possible to trade him and our first round pick to the Lions to move up in the draft and take whoever is available between McCoy and Suh to shore up the most important missing element on our defense which no one seems to discuss? Maybe we could get an extra lower round draft pick tossed in too?

Suh and McCoy are not NT's

Cam Thomas!!!

Hopefully we can get him in the third.

Read the post by Media Report - St. Louis Globe Democrat reports Jason Ferguson to be suspended for first 8 games next season.

Bad news on Ferguson. Looks like his career is over.

Great points on Boldin. Houshman goes to Seattle without Ocho Ego on the other side, and look what happens to him... he becomes more average. Great receivers (Fitzgerald) draw SO much extra attention from a defense, it really opens the field for the other guys. I think Boldin is a tough, athletic player, but let's face it... Boldin didn't line up against the other teams best DB 90% of the time... THAT guy was busy with Fitzgerald.

Dan Williams looking all the more likely at #12.....

Bye Bye Jason.... it was a great run... I cannot see you getting past your second bust with Tuna.

Yep, does look like the D line gets addressed with #12. Is Dan Williams a reach there? Anyone know his draft ranking?

I say we trade down a few spots either 15 or 16 depending on who offers a better deal either the giants or titans...maybe we get an extra3rd or 4th rounder. Then we pick dan williams there...then we take Tate with the second pick.

DWilliams is a top 15 pick, I would say that the NYG need a ILB bad and if McClain is still there at #12 we could trade down to them at #15 and still get DWilliams as well as a extra pick to boot ( maybe a 2nd or 3rd).

Why is the St Louis newpaper the only ones reporting Ferg's suspended, its not even on nfl.com?

Hey Sean.....GREAT IDEA!!! LOL

I think we will address the NT or WR spot with the 1st pick and OLB with the 2nd because of how deep OLBs are in this draft. There will be some real good ones still on the board in the 2nd at #43. Hughes, Sapp, Norwood just to name a few that could still be there at #43.

bigafly.... Marshall is a wife beating POS man... READ IT!... A WIFE BEATING 240LB, 6'5 MAN, who pounds on another mans daughter cause he is "Upset with life" (must be tough being a wealthy football player)... That is 1 rung above a child molester in my world. Boldin is a fine receiver but... READ IT... Miami is not in a position like Baltimore, sitting on Suggs and Lewis and a stacked D-line, to throw away an entire days picks... Boldin is a 30 year old receiver who has not finished a season in 3 years... and that is playing BEHIND...READ IT ... BEHIND Fitzgerald. If Miami was sitting on an elite defense like Baltimore, they would likely take a chance at throwing away two picks, the entire Saturday draft... on Boldin. They are not. Miami is 2 years into a complete overhaul, Baltimore is at least 2 and likely 3 years ahead of our curve. You don't start hanging the tree Ornaments on the tree until you have the damn thing sitting up straight and ready to start decorating (I hope that analogy is simple enough for ya)... Boldin will be 33 years old and on his way OUT OF THE LEAGUE when Miami hits its stride in 3 years. In 2 we will be looking down the Play-off list. Just going to have to understand, building a team takes time. It took New Orleans 5 years, they started the day after the hurricane. It tough enough when you have a few player to start with, Miami started with "ZERO", the past leadership left this team scalped, with no recent draft activity to show for there time here with the exception of Ronnie Brown... funny isn't it? Our best player right now on offense came from the draft... imagine that!!! Relax with the "Chunk Yards" crap... we'll get there soon enough... this staff is much smarter then YOU or I and I am certain they realize Miami needs to get some offensive help. But, unless you were alive to watch what was one of the best offensive teams to ever play, The Miami Dolphins of 1984 through 1995, who could score against any team in the league, but lose big games because of a porous pathetic defense, you will NEVER understand why some of us know Miami is doing the right thing. I saw Marino lose games where he scored 40+ points with 3 of the best receivers in the league at the time... It sucked. WE lost games last year that we scored PLENTY enough points to win... because the defense collapsed in the 4th quarter... smarten up guys... go watch what happened in Miami last year again... you will see it had very little to do with Offense and everything to do with teams taking the ball up and down the field like deer running back and forth in a field. Miami never has, and never will be a "shoot out" style team. Even in the great years they were ball control all the way, it fits into where they play (The Heat) and being outdoors in the rain. I know I'll never convince ya, and, I also know if Miami were to go take that POS wife beater Marshall who beats other men's Daughters for fun... some of you would still be on here whining about Miami not yet replacing Ferguson... It is what it is with some folks.

Just fantasizing a little here but wouldn't the addition of Bethea at safety be interesting? Think of the move towards youth while being very athletic.... Rising talents in the secondary in Smith, Davis, Bell, and (wishfully) Bethea. Crowder, Wake, Dansby, veteran leaders in Allen and Taylor... Merling appears to have some potential... Find a legit young 3-4 Nose tackle to groom under Fergie for a year, and this defense starts to sound pretty scary... Just dreamin' bout the possibilities...

anyone have any thoughts about the safety from dallas who was just released???

Who was released? Hamlin from Dallas?

Hey Mondo,
Guess there has to be one hater..

sorry should have said "...safety from dalas thats going to be released..." and yes i mean hamlin

anyone have a theory on what type of draft pick we could get for a package deal trading ginn and crowder???

Hamlin had 52 tackles 40 solo 12 assists but no int's or forced or recovered fumbles. Sounds to Crowder-like for me. We need playmakers!

Yeah I have seen his stats but other than that I don't know anything about the type of player he is and does he add any value? You're probably right though he doesn't add too much. I was just curious with the whole dolphins cowboys connection...

I think Crowder stays CALI Fin Fan, our playmaker is now right beside him,,, But Ginn, jeeeesh this guy is a weak, timid runner. Send him packing by himself and let's try to recoup some sort of draft compensation... what do ya think... a third rounder,... fourth?

Ginn by himself...we could probably pair him with one of our picks and trade up a round or two like maybe trade ginn and our 5th or one of our 6th for a 3rd rounder...that would be a GREAT deal...

Yeah CALI, we could probably pick up a pretty nice prospect in round 3... that's all Ginn ever was anyway.

This years WR class is deep however I think only bryant has the skills to be a true #1 receiver...with that said I think we need to focus on the other needs (NT,OLB, and safety) in the draft once we have those taken care of lets just go best available to strengthen depth. Then we have to land a deal in FA for a #1 receiver even if it is Antonio Bryant or T.O. We really just need to make it through this coming season and those guys will bring enough for us to do that. Then we can address WR next draft and FA.

CALI,

There are a number of players that have #1 WR talent in the upcoming draft.

Golden Tate will probbaly go 1st round and has that ability.

D. Thomas from Georgia Tech is a massive WR with great speed easily has the dimensions 6'3" 220+lbs and strong. Reminds me of Sterling Sharpe but probably faster.

A. Benn is big, strong fast type too.

Some like Lafell, Briscoe, D Williams.

The long and short of it is there will be some WR's emerge from this class. It remains to be seen which ones. B. Marshall was a 4rth round pick.

Dez Bryant has some baggage and also has skill too. He is being branded as lazy and non punctual and in the NFL that is a cardinal sin. I would not choose him as too much os riding on the #1 pick too miss. Can you imagine drafting a guy with obvious red flags only to do exactly what was being said of him?

Cheers,

Demaryius Thomas will be Miami's 2nd round pick if he's therw!!!!

TNPhinFan --Why are you wasting space here on Justin Fargas?????
