« Thoughts going into the 2nd day of free agency | Main | The Pennington contract covers all the bases »

(Mostly) quiet on Miami Dolphins front

Why am I working today?

Bill Parcells isn't. He spent Saturday morning in Jupiter, FL. at the shared training facility of the Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals. Parcells is tight with Cards manager Tony LaRussa and has a healthy respect for Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez, also.Tuna marlins

So the Big Tuna is taking in a spring training game this afternoon. Of course, he has his phone with him and is in contact with the home office back in Davie. But this all suggests today doesn't compare with Friday's start of free agency for electric activity.

The team should announce the signing of Karlos Dansby later today. The fact is the NFL transactions wire has him as signed already.

[Update 2:30 p.m.: The contracts have been signed and the club is expected to announce the signing of Dansby and Chad Pennington within the next 90 minutes or so.]

[Update 4 p.m. :The Dolphins did not have any UFA visits today that they are reporting to the NFL. And the Dansby contract, in fact, will be signed in a few minutes. Last-second language stuff. He's on the way to the facility to get it done.]

One would assume the team is making calls on it's second wave of free agents -- assuming there are any.

It stands to reason that as safety was a priority as soon as Antrel Rolle (the one that got away) was cut loose by Arizona, that Miami would take the next logical step toward filling that spot. The next logical step would be to check out the other available free safeties on the market.

The Herald's Jeff Darlington is reporting the Dolphins have not to this moment shown interest in St. Louis Rams restricted free agent O.J. Atogwe. Atogwe was tendered with a right of first refusal contract, meaning the Dolphins wouldn't have to pay draft choice compensation to sign Atogwe.

Another restricted free agent safety is Indy's Antoine Bethea. The guy was a Pro Bowl player, if you recall. The draft pick compensation on him is substantial -- a first round pick. But one would suppose the team could always work a trade with the Colts rather than give up the first-round selection. (Maybe a second-rounder?)

Many of you have asked about Darren Sharper as a Dolphins possibility. He'll be 35 years old in November and the Dolphins didn't show any interest in him last year when he was a year younger and available cheaply. This one would not make sense at this time.

Pittsburgh's Ryan Clark is available. Good player. Make sense. The Herald is looking into whether he is on the radar or not.

The one that got away met with the press corps that covers his new team today.

Safety Antrel Rolle was introduced to the New York media today. (Yes, some teams actually have press conferences to introduce their new players.) Rolle talked about what type of player the Giants are getting.

"I think I can make any type of play, to be honest" he said. "Not to sound cocky or arrogant, but that's just the way I am. I'm never going into a game and deny myself an opportunity. If it presents itself, I think I can definitely make the play."

Rolle talked about how the Giants made him feel comfortable and reminded him how it was being recruited at the University of Miami. The Miami native said he felt "like home" with the Giants.

Let me tell you another reason Rolle isn't actually playing at home, as in for the Dolphins. MONEY!

The Giants blew the Dolphins away on the cash front. The Dolphins offered Rolle a deal averaging $6 million per season. The Giants paid Rolle a deal that averages $7.4 million per season.

And the Dolphins didn't come in second for Rolle. They were third.

Rolle said the Arizona Cardinals were willing to match the Giants offer. The Dolphins clearly were not.

Check back often as I will have the latest updates from The Herald team right here. And follow me on twitter. Also, follow Darlington on twitter.

Thig or Penny will wind up in Zona for a draft pick! Any one have an opinion on what they are worth??

Big Blackie,

Hmmmm, not sure on the worth but there is a grand reason why the Fins wouldn't give Penny a not trade clause.

I am actually of the belief that Penny ends up being the one that gets traded. Thigpen has longer term upside and has mobility for even executing some Wildcat type plays. He brought the Fins back vs Pitt in the last game despite being new to the team and having little practice. I think he sticks and is a back-up with potential in case Penny goes down.

With Pat White it is still too early to rule him as a bust. Most will declare it and may be right. Some players have REALLY turned the light on in their 2nd and 3rd years. Maybe the year to grow physically, get more use to the spped of the NFL, maybe bring back his gloves? He did too much damage in college to be as bad as looked for most of the year. He may wind up being a bust but the Fins regime will give him more time to improve and rightfully so.

Penny has been a starter, is very accurate when healthy and needs to prove he is just that. I think he could bring a 3rd - 5th rounder if he passes a physical and can make certain throws.

Cheers,

Canfin,

I would be really pleased with a Demaryius Thomas pick in the 2nd. He has all the physical tools and speed to be a top notch WR.

His foot injury should drop him out of the 1st round.

Cheers,

NJ finfan KNOWS EVERYTHING.

SAME ONE WHO SAID GIVE IT A REST JASON TAYLOR WILL NEVER WEAR A DOLPHIN JERSEY AGAIN.
YA GOTTA LOVE THOSE WHO's ALWAYS RIGHT.EVEN WHEN THEY're WRONG.
SO WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO WANT BRANDON MARSHALL GIVE IT A REST.
HOWEVER HE's ALLOWED TO VOICE HIS STUPID THOUGHTS AS IF HE's IN THE KNOW.
EVERYONE MAKES HIM LAUGH BUT HE CHOOSE NOT TO LOOK PAST HIS NOSE TO SEE ANYONE's VIEW.
CLOSED MINDED PEOPLE ARE THE REASON THE WORLD IS THE WAY IT IS. EVERYONE's OUT FOR THEMSELVES AND IF IT's NOT THEIR THOUGHT or THEIR WAY IT's WRONG.
I LIKE THIS GUY HE SHOWS WHAT WE ARE ABOUT "F.U" I'm RIGHT.

You want to live on your land F.U I WANT TO AND I'm RIGHT.

YOU will not leave I'll kill you because F.U I'm RIGHT

IT REALLY DOESN't MATTER WHAT SOME SAY or DO HOW THEY CHOOSE TO LIVE THEIR LIFE SHOW SOME RESPECT TOWARDS THEM AND THEIR THOUGHTS BELIEFS.

If YOU DON't AGREE THAT's YOUR RIGHT BUT WHERE DO YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO MINIMIZE THEIR THOUGHTS or CALL THEM NAMES.

I TOLD YOU AST YEAR WHEN YOU TALKED ABOUT ALLWING ME TO WORK OUT AT YOUR "GYM".
BUT WHEN I TOLD YOU I WOULD DRIVE TO ANYWHERE IN NJ. YOU TOOK BACK THAT OFFER. YOU CALLED ME FAT AND SAID YOU WOULD LET ME WORK OUT.

I DON't KNOW WHAT YOU DO BUT I READ EVERYBODY's POST AND YOU SOUND LIKE THE BIGGEST FAKE UP HERE.

BUT AGAIN YOU ARE THE BEST EXAMPLE OF WHAT WE are ABOUT as AMERICANS.

FAKE AS HELL. LOVE YA KID

TNPhinFan and NJ PHIN,

Are you both still of the belief that the Fins will take McClain now that Dansby has been chosen?

Dansby has stated already that he is an inside guy and that he is looking forward to playing next to Crowder. I suppose the Fin's could have told him to lie and spread the rumor that is gonna play inside, eh? The Fins BP, Ireland and Sparano have all been caught in fibs, especially around draft time... I wouldn't expect anything less from them, afterall this "Draft Strategy" stuff is akin to playing great poker.

I heard McShay stating he thinks McClain could drop some in the draft... to 15-20 area. NJ, I know you don't think anything of McShay and that's fine... just another opinion like anyone elses.

In my opinion getting Dansby and then subsequently if the end up passing on McClain would support / vindicate what myself and others have said about holes in McClains game. I will take my chances on aligning with BP & Co regarding McClain's skills if that's the case. If McClain ends up becoming a stud, even if he is not a Fin, I will give you props for spotting it... If not then you guys can do the same...deal?

Cheers,

Justin Credible,

Hey I just wanted to point out that the caps lock will turn many of to reading your posts. I know SURESHOCK was for a while too but, he has gotten away from it.

Many take caps in posts as a form of yelling. A capitalized word for emphasis is great but, having them all capped it loses effect a bit. I also think many folks find that reading posts in all caps is harder to do.

Not knocking ya just pointing it out bro.

Cheers,

The dolphins will double down in this draft and select 2 nose tackles

Think he yelled it all........LOL....Not bad,Not good...Just an opinion.

im drunk

Is it monday yet?

Armando, you're slacking! What kind of draft pick would we have to give up to get Chris Cordero or someone else to run this blog? It has been 16 hours since you reported that Dansby was minutes away from signing but had a problem with how the contract was worded. So, for the 3rd time in this blog, I ask, "Is Dansby a Dolphin yet or not?"

Are you really asking if Dansby signed yet? A click on any sports page or sports radio will tell you he signed! The guys already looking for a home in South Florida, I mean at least that's what the news said.

Bad news about Furguson. It removes all doubt about what the #1 priority is. And that's not good either.

Ya just watching some combine highlights on Cody, who dropped some weight and looks to be working hard.

Here's a nose tackle for the Dolphins:

http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/blog/index.ssf/2010/03/cleveland_browns_rogers_could.html

How about Tyler Thigpen & Vernon Carey for Shaun Rogers?

Let's focus on signing nt jamal Williams. He will come cheap and then we can draft a NT as well.

Well if the news about Ferguson is true I think he's done in Miami. I think you have to look at someone who's 36, coming off a bad injury, who is looking at an 8 game suspension and say 'we need to turn the page'.

So where do we go next guys? I think Jamal Williams would be ideal for a couple of years. The kid that got released in Carolina might not be bad. Not sure about Shaun Rogers. He takes a lot of plays off and the Browns are going to want a pick. I say pass on him. It could be that Dan Williams ends up being the best option.

Thoughts?......

Jamal Williams would not be able to fill the role of a full time NT, he would only be a situational player right now. He was cut by San diego bacuse they are saying he would only go for about 30 plays the whole season and would not be worth the money. Yes 30 plays the whole season? Wich sounded really weird to me but these guys no more than me. Who knows?

Armando-

A NO 1 Wide receiver is NOT that important. You keep preaching that no team can win a Superbowl without a NO 1 WR. Really? The Patriots won 3 Superbowls without a NO 1 WR. How many have they won with Randy Moss? O. The Steelers do not have a clear cut NO 1 wideout. You think Hines Ward is NO 1 material? Holmes? They are not in the same level as Brandon Marshall, Randy Moss, Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, and Calvin Johnson-all of whom are truly elite WR's. But guess what? None of those NO 1 WR's that I mentioned have a Superbowl ring.

The Saints won because they have Drew Brees and a slew of talented receivers but come on. Coltson is not a NO 1 wideout. Dallas has Miles Austin-they didn't make it past the 2nd round of the playoffs. Where was Reggie Wayne on Super Sunday? The Colts won over the Bears in the Superbowl not because of having a No 1 wideout. It was their running game that won that game.

So please. Quit preaching a subject that is false. Having a NO 1 WR is a big help for the offense but can also produce a diva that rips apart the locker room. I still say having a star TE like a Dallas Clark (who is the true Colts NO 1 weapon that Peyton loves to unleash) would be of greater value than a No 1 WR at this time. Long before Vincent Jackson blossomed in San Diego, they relied upon Antonio Gates.

Get playmakers on Defense. Finish the OLine. Add a playmaker at TE. Improve the special teams. Those are main concerns. A NO 1 WR is a luxury not a necessity for winning in today's NFL. Not that I wouldnt want one. Heck, let's see if Dwayne Bowe is available for cheap. But still. Our priorities should now be NT, OLB, S, TE, RG, KR/PR, and then a WR. Although it is apparent that we may also a better nickel corner now that Nate Jones is gone.

The Problem with Dan Williams is that some draft boards have him going at #11 to Denver to fill their 3-4 needs as well. We do not want to take Cody at 12 do we? I see the Dolphins waiting till the 43 pick to see if he is there, but he could also be gone to our foes up North the Jets to back Kris Jenkins and his season ending knee injury from last year. Just when things were starting to look easy, yah right!

We can't afford to be going "cheap" on NT with Jamal Williams...This is the number one priority on this team and that means Dan Williams

Standley23, I don't like Cody to be honest with you, and certainly not at 12...I would rather bring in Cam Thomas or Troupe then Cody but not at 12...there is no FA that will fill this spot

I agree, I do not wanna see Starks filling at NT again when Solai was struggling and hurt. Time to make a move now!

I know he's not our guy but Big Ben Rothleisberger keeps putting himself in bad situations and is going to find himself in a jail cell

Ferguson just forced our hand here ('roid junkie). Have to get a veteran FA NT now and possibly draft one. Can't go into season with a rookie and Soliai, we'll get our butts beat worse than we did last year. Won't matter how mnay LB's or Safety's we bring in.

Good point earlier on stopping the use of all CAPS. Stop with that, the LMAO's, LMFAO's, quadruple exclamation points, etc..... bush league posting.

As I said in a previous post, if the Defensive guru of all times, Bill Parcels was third in the bidding for Antrel Rolle, he isn't good enough for the Tuna! You can take that to the bank, Dude!

Yea and Gerbil Wilson was. What does that tell you? Tuna is just as human as you and me. He's missed a lot in fact.

Wilford, Ayodele and a few more were all misses. Some worse than others. So instead of going on what Tuna thinks could happen, they should sign guys that have accomplished something. Tuna needs to sign or trade for a safety or WR before the draft. That will help them concentrate on OlB and NT.

It's me. Hey listen guys, I used to talk football with you guys, exchange negative opinions some positive, but nevertheless, we were all strong about our Dolphins. But these last few days I've noticed some complete deplorable posts and messages. Just like you guys, this is the blog for the fans of the Miami Dolphins. But this thing about Bobby12 and what he has said on his post, about Christians, being the destruction of this country, is completely unacceptable and hey look (I bet your mad) this guy here said it the way it really is. He called Bobby12 exactly what he is. This is for you Bobby12, answer this question and don't do what you normally do (talk around it), do you believe the birth of Christ? If you can't read the question, because obviously your a child, go find an adult. Thanks to (TNPHINFAN) who is a devoted Christian, because of some of you guys who denounced God, I will never post here again, and if I do, it will be because this message will have a long time to be on the board. Bobby one last thing to you, you have a lost spirit and here is the answer, seek God and you will never again be lost and you will have your place with him. I will sit back and look forward to reading your replies and sorry for such a long post but I wanted you guys to know who I really am, a brother in Christ. See ya.

Amen

Looks like a NT is a must have now, Ferg is gone for eight games.

I come here for Dolphins news only. I don't pay attention of the other stuff at all. All the other non football posts are nonsense.

Hey Joe, two things, one this is a football blog and two, I never said Christians are the destruction of this country so don't make things up...what I said is the Catholic church is the richest organization in the world AND they moved priests around who they KNEW were molesting children to other parts of the country to continue molesting other kids, all which is FACT...it's also fact religion is a very personal and private choice...What I choose to believe or not believe is NONE OF UR BUSINESS!!! I don't want u "saving" me, I don't want to hear how u conduct ur life unless ur a criminal then I'm all ears...The Taliban "forces" their religion and views on people, I'm not interested in you forcing ur beliefs on me...I respect TnPhinFan because he has his say and moves on and he is not a radical, like obviously u are...so go away, I'm not interested

Sorry,I had To,

THANK YOU,Jrlj2.I'm simply glad this message got through.

Yes Po White, we obviously need a NT and a good one at that

That is about the sh*ttyest news I could of woke up to today.

Hey Po, I think NT was on the 'must have' list. Maybe we need another category? how about 'super duper no $hit gotta have'? LOL

BTW, I went back and looked at the RFAs Mando listed a while back....not much there.

Who Knows the Fergi ordeal could be a blessing in disguise

Dan Williams is the guy at #12.

LMAO @ Joe.

I think that is the category we are in now.

Guys let's stick to football. We all have one thing in common on here....our love of the Dolphins!! Couldn't careless about any of the other stuff you do....that's your business!!

So, putting the world's problems aside and dealing with the BIG problems in life (how to get this team back to a Championship level), the NT need has become VERY important. As a few guys have said, without a strong NT we can sign all the players we want but it won't make one bit of difference....teams will be running on us all day. So what is the plan for fixing this problem. I still think there are some serviceable options out there in FA. One guy said he figures Jamal Williams is only good for THIRTY plays a season. Not sure where that is coming from but I highly doubt that. So since I feel this has become our new biggest need on the third day of free agency I would like to know how you guys would deal with this? Let's get some things talked about now before we get too far into this off-season. Thoughts?

Bobby12,YOU ARE A LIAR.And sure you don't want to here what i say.Let me talk like you.u ur Did not answer my Question. Here it is again,Do you u,ur,believe in the birth of CHRIST.Go grab in adult and answer this Qustion.Hurry child.

Like I posted earlier, a lot of draft boards have Dan Williams gone at pick 11 to Denver to fill their 3-4 needs. If that happens then what?

Dude, real Christ like.......

Shouldn't you be at church or something?

Joe, Go FU"K urself, that clear enough answer for you???

Cam Thomas?

Joe,

Give it a rest!! We're here to talk football, man. Go find another blog if your not interested in talking anything else but religion.

Armando how about kicking some of these clowns off of here. It's not what we all come here for to be preached to. Please ENOUGH!!!

Like I said, Real Christ like.....

You might want to study a lil more bout JC.....

Joeloco,

Let me start by saying I am a Christian, but you don't have to believe in Jesus to be an American or a Dolphins fan. There are people of many faiths that make up this country and to say that you are never coming back to a blog because someone has beliefs that differ from yours is ignorant and intolerant, two qualities that Jesus did not have. Peace be with you and I hope one day you learn to love others that come from different place, look different, or believe different things than you.... And if you want to leave, don't let the door hit you on the way out, your self-righteousness will not be missed.

I leave you with a quote from Mahatma Gandhi that is very insightful...

"I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ."

That is all on religion from me today... Go Dolphins... Karlito for Dansbito!

I just bought my beer at Circle K and SAVED myself $2.80 over what Publix charges!!! AMEN, Hallelujia!!!

Well said Carlito....

Like I posted earlier, a lot of draft boards have Dan Williams gone at pick 11 to Denver to fill their 3-4 needs. If that happens then what?

Posted by: standley23 | March 07, 2010 at 11:21 AM

When in danger or in doubt, run in circles scream and shout. No, seriously, we'd be in deep doo doo.

Williams, Cam Thomas, Yerrel Troupe I would be happy with any of those 3

24 pak of Bud light in the bottle for 18.99 is the way to go.....

IMO.

po.are you black or white?Either way its SAD to call either RACE (TRASH). Free advice, look in your own mirror.Just a thought.

Cocoa, I haven't looked at Mock Drafts lately so i have to believe u but if Denver dumps Marshall wouldn't Dez be the pick or McClain for Denver???

I the seahawks trade for Marshall the broncos would have the 6th and the 10th I think ? And would most definetly get both mc clain and dez

Reading through some of the posts last night a few things became clear. #1 Some of you may have a problem with alcohol and should seek help:). #2 Justin Credible, hope you're feeling better today because WOW, that was one hell of a bashing on NJ. Here's the thing, you know he's a head strong poster and is going to question your assesments of the teams needs. You know it won't be flattering so before you read the posts just look at the name at the bottom and ignore. It's just that simple. #3 At least Jersey has the nutz to sign in and allow his opinions to be analyzed unlike many cowards in here using multiple names and personalities because they have no life. They say stupid crap but don't have to back it up because they just use a different name the next time around which brings me to #4. Joe, you sir are a fraud. You're one of the cowards I'm speaking of and I love how you say you're not posting in here anymore because it's very telling. What you meant to say was you wouldn't be posting in here anymore under the name Joe and your posts won't be about God. You will probably start bashing the Dolphins and become that 'i hate the dolphins and all of their fans guy' because you seem to get off on peoples reactions to your insanity. Joe, a relationship with God, at least for me, is a personal thing and not something I choose to share on line with strangers. I do not shove my religion down your throat or try to recruit people into my way of thinking. I do not believe in organized religion, you know the one organized by man, because most of it is fraudulant and millions upon millions of people have been murdered and tortured throughout history in the name of religion and God. Please educate yourself on this matter before coming in here and telling people they're atheist because they don't follow your cooky version of religion. But then again that was probably all a hoax perpetrated on the members of this blog in an effort to get a reaction that in turn pleased you to no end. I'm glad I could help make your day by reacting to your comments but it ends here.

Bobby the CHILD 12,

Thats all i wanted, for everyone to see how screwed up YOU u,ur, UP.I'm done.I'm going to have a GREAT DAY.Your a poor little CHILD bobby u,ur 12.

Armando why dont the Dolphins get KIRK MORRISON from the Raiders?

The guy is 26, Oakland gave him a 3RD ROUND TENDER & he has averaged more than 120 tackles every year he's been in the league.

The guy had 133 tackles, 2 sacks & 3 FF this year...

Why not trade our 3rd Round pick for a HUGE UPGRADE OVER CROWDER??? Maybe even include Crowder & give them a 4 or a 5 instead???

DANSBY AND MORRISON INSIDE WOULD BE ONE HELL OF A LB DUO! ADD WAKE & MAYBE KINDLE OR GRAHAM... NOW THAT'S A DEFENSE
