Dez Bryant 'a kid that really needs guidance'

Oklahoma State's Pro Day is today and Dez Bryant is not participating, according to published reports.

Apparently Bryant is still not ready to run for the scouts after he skipped the workout portion of the Indianapolis Combine last month. Bryant cited a lingering hamstring problem at the Combine and apparently it is still not 100 percent. Remember also that Bryant has not played football since September of 2009 because he was suspended by the NCAA for lying to them.

Bryant's "handlers" are telling people the wide receiver will run at a private Pro Day later this month in his hometowm of Lufkin, Tex.

And I can hear the hand-wringing already from the skeptics: Oh my God, he's not working out again! He will surely be a bust!

Look, the same folks worried that Bryant will be a bust because he didn't work out at the Combine or at his Pro Day have zero criticism of the fact Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford didn't work out at the Combine and skipped Oklahoma's Pro Day on Tuesday.

Bradford will work out for team later this month and no one is ripping him about it, so spare me the drama.

But ...

There are a myriad other reasons to be seriously concerned about Bryant as a draft pick, and more specifically as a possible No. 12 pick in the first round to the Miami Dolphins.

And teams are definitely weighing those concerns as this report in the National Football Post shows. There are teams wondering about Bryant to the point that I spoke to one scout last week that wondered aloud if Bryant might not eventually be taken off the board of some teams, although not his own.

"One of the things I know we've done already is go beyond the field on this kid," the scout told me. "If you don't do that with him, you have no idea what you're getting and how to manage it. He's a kid that had trouble with his grades. He struggled to get eligible. But if you dig you find out it is not because he's stupid but partly because he lived in like three different homes growing up. He was sleeping on the floor some nights. He wasn't exactly nurtured, know what I mean? I can see how grades can suffer."

Anyone that does digging on Bryant will find out his mother had three children by the time she was 18 years old. At the age of 23, she had to give her kids up because she was busted for selling crack cocaine. She served 18 months.

Bryant's father?

No sign of him.

"He's a kid that really needs guidance," the scout told me. "Whatever team takes him is getting a player that has all the tools on the field. But whatever team takes him will have to do a lot of work to make sure he get on the field.

"He would be a good fit for a team that has a strong veteran receiver already on the roster that can take him under his wing. Frankly, it might also be smart to hire somebody to make sure he gets to practice and meetings on time. You might need someone to help him with the playbook. You'll have to watch him early on to teach him how to become a professional. He's nowhere near ready to be a professional right now. He might get there and there might be bumps along with the way. But if you're asking right now, he's not ready to be trusted off the bat in my opinion."

That will not deter one team. Someone will invest a pick on Dez Bryant. His physical skills and potential are vast. Are the Miami Dolphins that team?

At No. 12?

[Update 2:15 p.m.: Information from Alabama's Pro Day coming in: NT Terrence Cody weighed in at 348-349 depending on whom you believe and did 32 reps of 225 pounds. Linebacker Rolando McClain ran a 4.74 time on some stopwatches in the 40-yard dash.]

[Update 4:15: Dolphins hosted no free agents on Wednesday.]

We never had a 1000 YRD runner though( When Dan was there). But I will take that any day over what we have now.

All right people, peace, I'm out, gotta go work on my glutes (it's glutes day). But seriously to the guy making fun of Jersey for announcing his program. He's obviously into working out and it's a big part of his life. I applaud him for it because there are a lot of people in this country who could use some exercise. He seems to have fun doing it and we should be happy for him. If you want to make fun of him make fun of him for watching Fox News! Just kidding Joisey!

NJ IS A FAKE,HE DOESN'T HAVE A GYM NYSOTT .HOW CAN A GUY WHO WATCHES FOX FIX NEWS HAVE A GYM ?

The Cuban is out too, to work on my 12 ounce curls...... Peace......

NY Scott,

Has he actually been charged with beating women or is it implied? If so, why has he not done jail or gone to court over this? I don't remember hearing anything about this. And it's not unlike the Roethlisberger situation....it's one thing to accuse him but until both of these charges are proven in court I'm not buying it. And when you said he's POISON, were you not referring to what he brings to the team as opposed to his personal life?

Cuban menace, High 5 to you friend.

Alright. No Bryant, No Boldin, No Marshall or whatever the f u c k his name is.

But we did keep our 3rd & 4th picks and we paid Pennington $2.5mil for one year that he'll spend rehabbing.

Never mind that accused crap....didn't he have a trial...didn't his peers find him innocent?

Here is again the problems he has had;

On March 26, 2007, Marshall was arrested in the Highlands Ranch suburb of Denver on suspicion of domestic violence after his girlfriend reported that following a domestic dispute, Marshall prevented a taxi she was in from leaving his house.[57] Charges from the incident were later dismissed on May 25, 2007, after Marshall completed anger management counseling.

No beating there.

According to an article published in the Rocky Mountain News on July 28, 2008, Douglas County deputies fielded "about 11" calls to Marshall's home since January 2006. The article stated that one call resulted in Marshall being arrested (the March 26, 2007 domestic dispute), and some did not involve him at all.

Some didn't involve him at all!! I wonder WHO at his house was being the trouble maker?

A September 17, 2008 article on CompleteColorado.com stated that the solicitor's office in Fulton County, Georgia filed misdemeanor battery charges on September 10 for an alleged incident on March 4, 2008, in Atlanta, Georgia. Marshall was booked on March 6, then released the next day after posting a $1,000 cash bond.[63] The case was assigned to Judge John Mather in Georgia state court.[64] On August 14, 2009, a jury in Atlanta found Marshall not guilty.

NOT GUILTY!!

On March 1, 2009, Marshall was arrested in Atlanta for disorderly conduct after allegedly being involved in a fight with his fiancee, Michi Nogami-Campbell. Marshall was released on a $300 bond. The charges were dropped the following day.

Charged with disorderly conduct...NOT Assault!!

Thats it....so again...where was he ever convicted of beating ANY woman?

fishypete, Mr. Marshall has yet to sort out his matter in Court, However, there are Domestic battery claims made against him by his ex-wife in Atlanta (Pictures of her face included)and his latest girlfriend in Denver. I watched both Woman interview and saw the police reports when they were shown in the news piece. To say he was convicted would be incorrect, I would ask you, however. Do YOU believe the Mr. Marshall DID NOT do what he is accused? I cannot post a link to a competitors site on a promise, however, I would ask that you do a search of your own. As I said. Fishy, Should he come to Miami, I will pull for him, and chose to avoid the silly bantering I witness between the same people over and over here. Make up your own mind and act accordingly, Fact is... regardless of what you believe... he is not coming here...

One last thing, Bobby 13, you lead by 1 vs bobby 12 what's you strategy going into the second half??

Awesome Craig, great post. I hear ya and I agree in that Parcells could be a bit more flexible in certain areas. I just really don't like players with so many issues and I was pissed when the team brought in Porter. I think it does more damage than good and it's my personal opinion that I would never build my team using these types of players.
Bootang, 100% agree.
Multiple Bobbys, YES I could write all night but gotta go, talk to you knuckleheads later. Peace.

With the 12th pick of 2010 NFL draft the Miami Dolphins select.....Guard/University of New Hampshire.

CHILD PLEASE>...............

I have a little pecker and my girlfriend looks like a piece of grizzle from an overcooked steak, but dont worry, I go down on old ladies and very young boys...im equal opportunity

Just wish there would be some honor here. Pick a name!

Okay Craig last one, when I said he was poison I was referring to the incident from last years training camp when he was knocking down and kicking balls that were thrown to him because he was mad at the management. The QBs were practicing their outs but he couldn't care less because he was mad at a contract dispute. The young guys on the team all witnessed this and I actually watched guys walk around with their heads down. He basically ruined a session of practice by acting like a selfish brat. The guy is an awesome receiver, everyone can see that. But for me it's not enough, I want to see that he is a team first guy. That's what Sparano and Parcells are preaching every day. NO ONE and I mean no one is bigger than the Miami Dolphins or their fans. These players are here for 4 to 5 years on average. I've been rooting for this team since the late 70's and will until the day I die. The team is what's important. The Dolphins name is what's important. Not some player who is going to come and go out a millionaire. It's all about the team to me, the Miami Dolphins.

Well fishypete....that's good enough for me!! As far as I'm concerned unless this guy has ever been convicted or spend some time in jail, then his record is clean. Now is he a model citizen?.....of course not!! But he's obviously a guy who has made some poor choices and hung out with some of the wrong people. But he's still young and isn't a totally lost cause. The man sure knows how to play football!! We haven't had a receiver like him here in a very long time!!

I still say, put this guy in the right environment, with an organization that knows how to win and treats their players well and he could be a HUGE success! Parcells was able to forgive Williams and he was given not two but three chances with our team and he's was a very productive player and arguably our most valuable player last year.

If Bryant is available he will be drafted by the dolphins. I think y'all getting carried away with the idea Parcell not wanting to draft a receiver early.

i have no HONOR or pride or life...this is what I do when i get home from McDonalds, i am a masterchef and a master-bater...i get on my computer because i be the man, i funny, i make everyone laugh haha I ALOCO the master of the blog

Okay Fishy youre right gosh darnit! :) He's never been convicted. But doesn't it throw up some red flags for you that he is involved with the police so much? How many times have the police been called to Reggie Waynes house? How about Zach Thomas or Chad Pennington? These are the types of players I want on my team, that's all I'm saying. Not to mention what I wrote about his pracice episode. It's just too much for me is all. Okay now I'm seriously leaving.

Derek;

Again...if you CLAIM he's a wife beater/girlfriend beater...you need proof...and I would totally agree with you, but you don't have any. It's one thing to accuse a person...it's another to have enough proof to convict that person...in my country we don't convict a person on a blog, newspaper or point a view...we convict a person in a court room. I have a question to ask you, did you like Ricky Williams when he quit the Dolphins and was convicted by the NFL for using drugs twice? Has he changed...did he grow up? If you answer is yes...then why can't Marshall? Do you not believe him when he said he hates being in Denver..I do, wouldn't you if you had all that crap happening around you, wouldn't you want a change of location too?
Remember a player that came to the Dolphins late in his career, a troubled youth that once played for the Vikes...he grew up and became one of the best receivers in the game...didn't he take Randy Moss under his wing...and help him become another great receiver..I believe Marshall deserves that same chance..the same way the Dolphins need him...thats my point of view.

weird feeling that ted ginn gonna bust out big this season....might be wishful thinkin..but i see the fins signing A bryant and ginn gettin more open (not saying making the catches) cause of double coverage on A bryant

By the way, before I leave, I have never been involved with the police once in my entire life and I'm 39 years old. How many times did you say the police were called to somewhere that Marshall was at?

I AM PAUL!!!!! HEAR ME ROAR, I LOVE MEATBALLS, SOFTBALLS, HARDBALLS AND MENS BALLS

Damn,if we cant sign Dez Bryant, or Antonio Bryant, maybe we should call Kobe !

NY Scott,

Good points on your last post.....and I agree with everything you said. I remember the incident well and I totally agree his actions were selfish and unacceptable. However, I think that can be corrected. He was upset about a lot of things and showed his immaturity. He was upset about what happened to Shanahan, he was upset about how Cutler was treated and of course he was upset about not getting a new contract. His actions were childish but not impossible to overcome. Believe it or not....this guy wants to win! He realized his actions weren't appropriate last year and he focussed and actually had a very good year. Get this guy out of Denver and away from McDaniels and he's a totally different player.....similar to what happened to Moss when he left the Raiders and joined the Pats.

Good post Craig. We are all human and with error. Funny when it comes to ourselves we want a second or third chance. I am not justifying any criminal acts etc...but we all learn from mistakes and have made bad decissions. We learn from it (hopefully) and move on.

Thanks tmike. I feel the same way.....

And like an earlier poster stated, everyone thought Parcell was going to get rid Ricky Williams but one his first moves was to talk Ricky into playing.

NYScott;

It's not important to know how many times...it's important to know how many times Marshall wasn't even there...again...who was the REAL trouble maker in that house?

M.VICK JUST WON AN AWARD FOR GOOD BEHAVIOR SO THIS GUY MARSHALL CAN TURN THING AROUND TO , NO BODY PERFECT IN LIFE .

Craig Miller, what a stupid name, why did mama maria not name you Craig dumbass, it fit better

I AM PAUL ALOCO, HEAR ME ROAR WHILE I SICK MY MANHOOD IN MEATBALL SUB!!!!!!!

NYSCOTT, WE ARE FOOTBALL FANS, WHY WE HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE GUY LIKE HE'S ONE OF YOUR FAMILY.MY BE SHE DIDN'T GIVE HIM SEX WHEN HE NEEDED IT TO PRFORM .

NFL Network showing 1994 season opener Miami vs New England. Marino handing off to Kirby, throwing to Ingram. Parcells coaching New England. Marino just threw a TD pass - 64 yards. 299th TD of his career. Second quarter, score tied 7 - 7.

Good posts guys. Fishypete....I don't always agree with what you have to say but a couple of REALLY solid posts, man. Good job!!

NY Scott...I'm 42 years old and I've never been in the trouble with the police either. I like to think in Marshall's case he's just been a bit immature and made some bad choices.

NY Scott, I actually think you are warming up to this guy....maybe you'll be one of the first to get out to get a MARSHALL 'Phins shirt once he does in fact come aboard, no?......LOL.

Dan to Ingram! TD!

phins 'n skins,

Hell Yeah!

Loved those days!

NYSCOTT, MAMA MARIE DIDNT GIVE ME HER TUNA SUB AND I COULDNT PRFORM EITHER....IT SMELLED LIKE WEEK OLD SALMON, I WEAR MASK SHE GET MAD

Sure most of you don't remember but we ALWAYS one the 1st game of the season. ALWAYS!

Draft Dez and then hire Zach to whip him into shape (he might even do it just for fun). If Thomas can turn Crowder into a film junky, he can get Bryant on track.

Dan was God!

Yeah... they were special. Boy, was Dan ever an intense player.

When I compare what they have to our trio of Hartline, Bess and Ginn......NO comparison!! Hats off to Ozzie Newsome going out and getting some weapons for his young quarterback Flacco. Now trifecta.....what are we going to do to help Henne?
