Dez Bryant 'a kid that really needs guidance'

Oklahoma State's Pro Day is today and Dez Bryant is not participating, according to published reports.

Apparently Bryant is still not ready to run for the scouts after he skipped the workout portion of the Indianapolis Combine last month. Bryant cited a lingering hamstring problem at the Combine and apparently it is still not 100 percent. Remember also that Bryant has not played football since September of 2009 because he was suspended by the NCAA for lying to them.

Bryant's "handlers" are telling people the wide receiver will run at a private Pro Day later this month in his hometowm of Lufkin, Tex.

And I can hear the hand-wringing already from the skeptics: Oh my God, he's not working out again! He will surely be a bust!

Look, the same folks worried that Bryant will be a bust because he didn't work out at the Combine or at his Pro Day have zero criticism of the fact Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford didn't work out at the Combine and skipped Oklahoma's Pro Day on Tuesday.

Bradford will work out for team later this month and no one is ripping him about it, so spare me the drama.

But ...

There are a myriad other reasons to be seriously concerned about Bryant as a draft pick, and more specifically as a possible No. 12 pick in the first round to the Miami Dolphins.

And teams are definitely weighing those concerns as this report in the National Football Post shows. There are teams wondering about Bryant to the point that I spoke to one scout last week that wondered aloud if Bryant might not eventually be taken off the board of some teams, although not his own.

"One of the things I know we've done already is go beyond the field on this kid," the scout told me. "If you don't do that with him, you have no idea what you're getting and how to manage it. He's a kid that had trouble with his grades. He struggled to get eligible. But if you dig you find out it is not because he's stupid but partly because he lived in like three different homes growing up. He was sleeping on the floor some nights. He wasn't exactly nurtured, know what I mean? I can see how grades can suffer."

Anyone that does digging on Bryant will find out his mother had three children by the time she was 18 years old. At the age of 23, she had to give her kids up because she was busted for selling crack cocaine. She served 18 months.

Bryant's father?

No sign of him.

"He's a kid that really needs guidance," the scout told me. "Whatever team takes him is getting a player that has all the tools on the field. But whatever team takes him will have to do a lot of work to make sure he get on the field.

"He would be a good fit for a team that has a strong veteran receiver already on the roster that can take him under his wing. Frankly, it might also be smart to hire somebody to make sure he gets to practice and meetings on time. You might need someone to help him with the playbook. You'll have to watch him early on to teach him how to become a professional. He's nowhere near ready to be a professional right now. He might get there and there might be bumps along with the way. But if you're asking right now, he's not ready to be trusted off the bat in my opinion."

That will not deter one team. Someone will invest a pick on Dez Bryant. His physical skills and potential are vast. Are the Miami Dolphins that team?

At No. 12?

[Update 2:15 p.m.: Information from Alabama's Pro Day coming in: NT Terrence Cody weighed in at 348-349 depending on whom you believe and did 32 reps of 225 pounds. Linebacker Rolando McClain ran a 4.74 time on some stopwatches in the 40-yard dash.]

[Update 4:15: Dolphins hosted no free agents on Wednesday.]

Nj Phin Fan had a steroid sandwich for lunch today

Not sure if you saw, Micah ran as low as 4.71 and high as 4.81 today.

I really hope Parcells sticks to what he's good at and takes the best OLB available with the 12th pick. Unless a DT has better value at that spot I don't see why they wouldn't. PLEASE do NOT take any risks with anymore of our draft picks. Pat White was the dumbest pick they could've made last year and I do not want them to repeat it by taking a chance on DEZ. Let another team that isn't trying to rebuild take the risk, we have enough problems as it is. Yes he could turn out to be great but he could also turn out a bust, it's 50/50 whereas taking the safe pick on a defensive player will almost assure us of having a very talented player for the next decade. DO NOT re-invent the wheel, take the safe pick and make our defense stronger. The offense can get us to the playoffs with a strong defense supporting them and they can draft a WR 2nd or 3rd or wait until next season and go after a star.

Wow, that's a lot of baggage. These are the kind of question marks associated with a later round draft pick, not a 1st - not the 12th overall pick. It's a gigantic risk!

Jay, 3 sack Kindle is the best candidate for OLB??? God help us all if that's the truth.

Whatever man... Why do you live on the extremes? Everything is not black and white... Life has a whole lot of gray. Who says Parker didn't learn from the whole Crabtree thing last year? They were the ones who gave in... Not the 49ers. You don't know, you just label the guy as evil. That's not fair. You will miss out on alot of good people if you label them from one incident that has happened.

Indiana Dolfan,

That won't happen. And I'd still be shocked if they picked him with all the holes we have on defense. We have receivers on the roster. They need to be upgraded, but they are there. We lost 5 starters on defense and have only filled one of those with Dansby. They will go defense with the first two picks.

Randy, I am not advocating the Dolphins draft Dez Bryant.

The only player I have advocated they pick is Graham from Michigan -- and that likely won't happen.

Bootang. 4.71 and 4.74 are close . Micah running a 4.71 and 4.81 after runnibg a 4.99 about a week ago bring up some ? marks for me. there's a big discrepancy. Who know's . there more to football than 4 time like instincts which mcclain is head and shoulders above johnson,

Bootang25, and Micah is coming off knee surgery.... To see his times getting better is very encouraging... No way he's 100%... I'm thinking he can get into the 4.6's at 100%.

This is why we didn't get Rolle or Clark:

Now that Antrel Rolle and Ryan Clark have signed with the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers, respectively, both are speaking out and saying the Dolphins were unwilling to pay them top dollar. Rolle signed a five-year, $37 million deal with the Giants. “The budget that they were willing to spend on a saftey was a little bit lower than what I was looking for,” Rolle told WQAM radio, per the Palm Beach Post. “Miami would have been nice just for the fact that it’s home. But I don’t think anyone would sell themselves short just to stay in their hometown, especially when you have someone like the Giants making such a great offer and giving me such a great opportunity.” And Clark told Fox 31 in Denver that the Dolphins’ offer didn’t meet his expectations. “It came down to the inability for us to agree on a deal,” Clark said. “They offered what they thought was fair, but in the end I didn’t agree.”

As Dez Bryant falls, it may be to his benefit. As he does, he starts hitting the really good teams. If he went to a HOU or PHI, for example, he could put up good numbers early on.

40 times

Andre Johnson and Dez Bryant - I shudder at the thought.......

The difference in 40 times probably has to do with the injury and being further along in recovery. I am high on McClain, and have only ever mentioned Micah as an option starting in round 3. They are really 2 different players. Micah is more like Crowder, the thumper who is the main run support guy, and McClain is more of the Dansby type, versatile and very good in coverage.

I just hope we dont take Pierre-Paul. He has Vernon Gholston all over him. By the way this is the first blog iv'e ever commented on. Been reading for about a year. Defense makes the most sense unless the majority of mock drafts are wrong, or Miami knows of another amazing WR in the draft.

If Bryant is "BEST" available @ 12?....It's a no-brainer..Should've tried to steal Thomas Jones, and we did'nt!...Hopefully we can pkg Thigpen/Ginn jr & 2nd, grab Marshall...Offer Tory Holt tender (for leadership), and our offense it set for next 5years...Then just draft "BEST" availasle on defense the rest of draft..

fxck the jets!,

we know... I can't speak for everybody, but I'm glad the Dolphins didn't overpay these guys! Yeah, we offered Rolle less that he was looking for, because what he was looking for was to become the highest paid safety ever...

NJ PHIN FAN, why is it so hard for you to just have a conversation with people instead of getting all up in everyones grill? I'm not trying to start stuff, I'm just curious...

Actually grab Marshall, and 3rd...if we give up "both" players...

Dez is a great talent, and as I said, he eventually could reach a point where his value is too good to pass up for a team. Remember, the Vikings had Cris Carter and Jake Reed when they picked Randy Moss. Not saying Bryant is Moss, but you get the point. It will be much easier putting up numbers in a good offense with a good QB situation, as opposed to going to Oakland or Buffalo.

Marcus . just to get one thing straight. Parker being dez bryant's agent is not the only Red flag On Deaz Bryant. His crap is well chronicled. i don'T know why you singled only that out ( check it , yeah i do ). In this case there's no gray matter , just black and white.

I don't think Bryant is our guy and certainly not at 12. I'm on record as trading down 10-12 pick and drafting Golden Tate. This guy has all the tools. There will still be guys available to fill our need of OLB, NT, safety and TE later in the draft. Golden Tate would be great in our offence.

this is a good kid who was dealt a bad break. the problem with you loser goody*goody dolfans is he has to be a loser like t.ginn. me personally i would sign a.bryant to an incentive laiden deal. and draft safety or lb in rd.1 and t.cody in rd.2. then m.williams out of syracuse in rd.3 and call it a day.

I agree with not overpaying them, but it still makes me a bit nervous they don't have anyone filling up that huge hole.

JC , this is a thing between marcus and i that goes back to last year. He likes to have a competition with me for some reason. Do you notice that other posters have knocked dez bryant and his red flad but was only inclined to go after me. it's all good.

And I have to say, Cody showing he can keep the weight down is a good sign. This guy was pushing 400 pounds at one point. He's still a big man but if he can maintain his weight to a reasonable level he wouldn't be a terrible pick in the third or fourth round. The man does have some talent.

red flags

I want to see NJ Phin Fan and Indiana Phin Fan duke it out in a naked jello wrestling contest.

NY , you a sissy or something ??

NJ, that was my only point... I did not say whether we should or should not take Dez Bryant. I just said that Eugene Parker should not be looked at as being a reason why we should not take him. Your reasoning does not make sense. Parcells has had his clients over the years. You just name Crabtree. You don't know the guy personally but you slander him.

I don't attack you personally NJ... I just ask you for facts to back up your statements... And if I find something to the contrary I will bring it to your attention so that you can have the facts. But on more than one occasion when I do present the facts you either ignore them or brush them off. You never admit to being wrong.

NJ - Why you care if people give out "your awards"?? It is quite humerous to know you think I am "crying". What is your defintion of "crying"? How is that even possible on a blog? You my friend are the one getting all worked up.

Signed, LMFAO!!

Antonio Bryant has just agreed to a 4 year deal with the Bengals.

Antonio Bryant 4 year deal to the Bengals.

Damn Mt. Cody slimmed down more? Guess he's serious about getting into playing shape.

He may not be a bad pick with our 43rd.

Dez as much as I like the kids talent and would love to see him a Fin. I have to concede now with all those issues he has, that at the 12th overall probably not a smart move too much money to risk on him at this point in time.

Well guys who is left that is seriously worth looking at at WR in this draft that could help our team within a YEAR of developing?

I just don't see any other WR's with Dez's ability in this draft maybe we are better off just waiting till next year for a WR.

I dotta agree wit mase on one point...ginn was terrible pick at that point in draft 9th?...had k.o. return in biggest game in college careeer then got hurt? must admit am MICHIGAN fan...so was double blow for me...as dez, would'nt wish early part of his life on anyone!! not even j-e-t fans...well? nahh!! but with quality mentor (Holt?) could only imagine dez, brandon,holt/devonne in slot? stock def. rest of draft...hard to see who in afc east could stop us?

Looks like Antonio Bryant has signed for the Bengals....

Cody's showing serious purpose & maturity by losing the weight.

The more he loses, the higher he creeps back up the draft ladder.

I would first and foremost like the Dolphins to trade down and acquire more picks, if not draft Williams then in the second rd draft a WR (Thomas?). I have faith the Dolphins can find an OLB and FS later in the draft. I'm not high on drafting Kindle or JPP at 12. At this point it looks like bringing in a rookie FS to compete with Culver and Clemons is our only option, thankfully it is a deep safety class.

Looks like we missed out on another guy that would have helped us. What is it with Parcells and his disgust for wide receivers. Does anyone else get the feeling we're going to go through ANOTHER off-season without an impact wide receiver. Kind of disappointing really....

Passing on Dez? You kidding me Phin Fans??? This is the type of WR we have been looking for. We won't trade for a bigtime WR so we have to draft one. There won't be this caliber of a WR after round one.

Marcus , My reasoning doesn't make sense ??. I said that bradford doesn't have a jerk agent and wasn't late to practices and games like bryant but yet you ONLY took the agent part has my reasoning. What about the part where i said he was late to games and practices you CHOSE TO OMIT !!!. Give me a BREAK !!! The guy freaking needs a baby sitter. If your going to talk about what i said then talk about the entire thing i said and not the part that onlt suits you. I always answer your questions and don't ignore them. and if i missed some it's because i left and didn't see it or your just being redundant and ridiculous . I thought you were done with me ??,

Antonio Bryant signs a 4 yr deal with the Bengals per PFT.

Dez Bryant or someone else...Anyones better than Ted "couldnt catch a STD in Tijuiana" Ginn JR

A inside linebacker's speed is more important measured in the shuttle drill..5-8 yard burst and explosiveness at POA. The 40 is not the most important factor in R. Mcclain(sp?) I would be more interested in the percieved " softness" of his tackliong style which I do not buy. All-american linebackers and soft dont go together folks.

Marcus - If you do not agree with NJ, he takes it personal and thinks we are attacking him. Then, when you get him all worked up he will give you his retarded "awards" and think he is the all high and mighty great one!!! What a tool he is...

I believed picking up a WR in FA was the way to go and concentrate on defense in the draft. It seems to me the learning curve is longer for WRs and few make an immediate impact. Especially as a #1 like we need. However with Boldin gone, TO being well TO and little else out there I'm ready to throw in the towel and say offer Denver our 2nd rd pick in 2010 and a conditional pick in 2011 for Marshall. Maybe as high as another 2nd if he gets to 1000 yards or something.

I know it won't happen but that's where I'm at. And Boldin's contract wasn't eye popping so maybe we could sign him to a reasonable long term deal, probably for less than Dansby. Just a thought.

OMG we lost another opportunity at going undefeated! WAHHHHHHHHHHHH WAAAHHHHHHHHH

Chicken Little

(BTW Marcus, am not thrashing your news, just trying to preemptively and mockingly cry about not going after Bryant - cause it will be coming)

pls excuse da mispelling

Damn, looks like I was too late!

Why are we even talking about Dez when we KNOW that there's NO WAY we'll draft a WR that high? 1st pick is a LB, it was written, doesn't anyone rememeber?

lips . You're not late. that's just CRYBABY > BUFFOON > SIMPLETON HALL OF FAMER INDIANA DOOFIN crying again.

NJ - You are all worked up you have to accuse people of "crying" (however that is possible) on a blog!! 3 words for you -- YOU'RE A TOOL!

Signed, LMFAO!!

as californian once famously stated......

Can't we "ALL" just get along.....=')

about the 40 times: If they are hand timed, they are subject to human error. being picky about the result to the 100'th of a second assumes they are supremely accurate. (Speaking of which, these schools have track programs, why don't they use some real equipment to time these kids?)

Secondly, Zach Thomas wasn't supremely fast, but his study habits and knowledge helped him anticipate plays so he can get a head start... when running 20 yards laterally, a .2 second slower over 40 yards is not really that material - when you could read the play and take off half a second earlier.

If McClain has that type of ability, then his times are not a sticking point for me, unless he was slower than Rich Eisen.

Me crying, never a chance tool bag!! you are complaining about me. This is to easy getting you worked up!!!

Toolbag!!! Yea lol

I saw you have other points. But there was one point I disagree with. And that is the one I brought up. NJ, you said that one reason the Dolphins will not pick Bryant because he has a jerk agent. Why is he a jerk? Because he held out a player? How many hold outs have their been over the years? According to your logic, all agents are jerks.

I gave you three players that were signed by Parcells that Parker represented. And I am sure there are others. These facts show that Parcells and CO. are not afraid of players represented by Parker. That's all I'm saying. A normal person would see this a reconsider their position. And next time someone brings up Dez Bryant, don't say he has a jerk agent and Parcells won't deal with him because according to history that is not true.
