Dez Bryant 'a kid that really needs guidance'

Oklahoma State's Pro Day is today and Dez Bryant is not participating, according to published reports.

Apparently Bryant is still not ready to run for the scouts after he skipped the workout portion of the Indianapolis Combine last month. Bryant cited a lingering hamstring problem at the Combine and apparently it is still not 100 percent. Remember also that Bryant has not played football since September of 2009 because he was suspended by the NCAA for lying to them.

Bryant's "handlers" are telling people the wide receiver will run at a private Pro Day later this month in his hometowm of Lufkin, Tex.

And I can hear the hand-wringing already from the skeptics: Oh my God, he's not working out again! He will surely be a bust!

Look, the same folks worried that Bryant will be a bust because he didn't work out at the Combine or at his Pro Day have zero criticism of the fact Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford didn't work out at the Combine and skipped Oklahoma's Pro Day on Tuesday.

Bradford will work out for team later this month and no one is ripping him about it, so spare me the drama.

But ...

There are a myriad other reasons to be seriously concerned about Bryant as a draft pick, and more specifically as a possible No. 12 pick in the first round to the Miami Dolphins.

And teams are definitely weighing those concerns as this report in the National Football Post shows. There are teams wondering about Bryant to the point that I spoke to one scout last week that wondered aloud if Bryant might not eventually be taken off the board of some teams, although not his own.

"One of the things I know we've done already is go beyond the field on this kid," the scout told me. "If you don't do that with him, you have no idea what you're getting and how to manage it. He's a kid that had trouble with his grades. He struggled to get eligible. But if you dig you find out it is not because he's stupid but partly because he lived in like three different homes growing up. He was sleeping on the floor some nights. He wasn't exactly nurtured, know what I mean? I can see how grades can suffer."

Anyone that does digging on Bryant will find out his mother had three children by the time she was 18 years old. At the age of 23, she had to give her kids up because she was busted for selling crack cocaine. She served 18 months.

Bryant's father?

No sign of him.

"He's a kid that really needs guidance," the scout told me. "Whatever team takes him is getting a player that has all the tools on the field. But whatever team takes him will have to do a lot of work to make sure he get on the field.

"He would be a good fit for a team that has a strong veteran receiver already on the roster that can take him under his wing. Frankly, it might also be smart to hire somebody to make sure he gets to practice and meetings on time. You might need someone to help him with the playbook. You'll have to watch him early on to teach him how to become a professional. He's nowhere near ready to be a professional right now. He might get there and there might be bumps along with the way. But if you're asking right now, he's not ready to be trusted off the bat in my opinion."

That will not deter one team. Someone will invest a pick on Dez Bryant. His physical skills and potential are vast. Are the Miami Dolphins that team?

At No. 12?

[Update 2:15 p.m.: Information from Alabama's Pro Day coming in: NT Terrence Cody weighed in at 348-349 depending on whom you believe and did 32 reps of 225 pounds. Linebacker Rolando McClain ran a 4.74 time on some stopwatches in the 40-yard dash.]

[Update 4:15: Dolphins hosted no free agents on Wednesday.]

Now for the next week the only thing NJ will be typing to me is:

It is nice to know that NJ a.k.a. "toolbag"!!

Indiana, I know all about NJ... I had to jack him up last year and he played nice for a while... Now we are back at it because I am not very high on Rolando McClain and he is. So he thinks I am after him....

Tool Bag and TOOL ?? Who are you bevis and butthead ?? That 's about your intelligence level. LOL !! INDIANA > WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH !!!

Do you think Jacoby Ford would be a good pick if he's available in the 3rd or 4th round (is there any knock on him other than being short)?

What round do you think he'll go in?

From what I've checked he seems to have the same built our old Mark Duper.

Indiana doofin aka tool bag . Tool bag ??? What a SIMPLETON !!! WAAAAAAAAHHHHH INDIANA WAAAAAAAAAAAHHH

I'm with you on the Marshall stuff. I think it's nothing more than stubborness on the part of Parcells that they haven't been looking into acquiring an elite wide receiver. I don't care what any of you on here feel about Marshall....to not even look into what it would take to acquire him is nothing more than being irresponsible. It's time to put some of their biases aside and get serious about this stuff. We have a glaring need for an elite wide receiver on this team. What's the highest you would rate our best wide receiver in the league.....30?.....35?.....40? Whatever it might be, we need to get better in this area. So what's the answer? Go with the same guys as we had last year and draft a couple of guys and hope they develop in 2-3 years. Really conservative and really disappointing!!

Sad to hear confirmed what we already knew. That this staff is too damn cheap to sign a decent safety...Awesome

C'mon NJ... Are we adults or what? Give the guy a break... How you any better than those imposters who come on here and attack you? We are on here to talk football.

Dont ever say pierre-paul in vernon gholstine---their body types are nothing alike---JPP had a solid year at south florida and it was his 4th year playing football---1st year against Div1 talent----for all the haters, you can spin that as he is too raww, red flag this red flag that

If Parcells takes this kid it is b/c he sees something in him and parcells has draft Lawrence taylor and dermacus ware---and athony spencer so i think he knows more about the posiition then most fans---

The fact is if a guy that all you love dan williams tried to leave after his junior year he wouldnt even being viewed as a 1st round pick b/c he had one ggod year and that was his senior----

JPP is a rising player that has played well in his FIRST year at the Division I level----If you are against drafting on potential and lack of tape----you better not say you want Dan williams b/c you will be contradicting urself--

I hope the pick is JPP b/c that means parcells is comfortable with him when he goes through the interview process---and i think most people downplay that aspect----JPP has upside that isnt comparable to any other d-lineman ---other then Morgan in my mind

Tampafin , I would like to say that Dez Bryant has a jerk agent and shows up late to practices and games among the many reasons i stated no to dez. If miami gets rid of ginn , that jacoby ford would be a possiblity but right now miami has to many small wr's.

That's 1

Posted by: NJ PHIN FAN | March 10, 2010 at 03:26 PM

Make it 2...you are such a tool!!

Marcus - Every other week NJ has someone on here that he does not like, because at soem point that individual disagreed with him. Then he likes to try to turn things around, think we are "attacking" him and complain about it. It is pretty humerous!!

Are we going for #3 NJ??

NJ - Do you know Bryant's agent personally? If you don't know him or met him how can you call him a jerk?

Marcus , i talk football to those who would like to take football and not act like TOOL BAGS !!! LOL !! Go back to page 1 one and see who wanted to talk football and who acted like a child . Do some research before you make accusations of something you don't know.

Well,if we dont inquire about Marshall which is highly unlikely, the Draft is the way to go cus there really is'nt another decent WR we'll be able to get through Free Agency

Well guys, bad news. Cincinnati just signed Antonio Bryant. They already have ochocinco, but yet knew they needed more. So guess what. They are in the playoffs and we aren't next year because it's obvious parcells and co. Doesn't believe wr are on the damn field!

NJ, you never do research. So don't ask me to do anything that you never do... I just see you over and over and over again polluting the blog.

Are the Dolphins going to pick him at #12? No.

INDIANA > The only tool bag ??? i don't like is you . Go back to page one and see who started TOOL HALL OF FAMER . WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH WAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH WAAAAAAAAAHHHHH.

We need to get Marshall. He's 1000 yards every year, young l, quick, scores tds, and btw 1000 yards is like 400 more than our highest receiver last year.

We CANNOT get a wr through the draft. Mos likely if we did he wouldn't be ready for two years or so.

I mean if the guy said anything about me, I would respond and then let it go... I wouldn't keep polluting over and over again.

A lot of good points in your most recent posts. I think the bottom line is (and you said this) that BP and company know linebackers. It's what they do best!! If we end up drafting JPP (and I think if he's there, there is a good chance), then that will be fine with me. They know what they are doing.

So Allen, my question to you, do you really like the guy that much to take him at 12?

I do not think we will be taking a offensive person within the 1st 2 rounds of the draft. If we draft a WR or even 2, who gets dropped or cut?

OK Marcus . Tryptich says hello . He knows who pollutes blogs , he called you out the other day and you went off on him to never speak to you. LMFAOOOOOOOO !!!

Posted by: NJ PHIN FAN | March 10, 2010 at 03:35 PM

Why are yous till complaining NJ? Go put a bigger tampon in and get over it...

And I left him alone. I did say anything else to him.

I addressed him and left him alone. I did not pollute the blog.

OK , You're next post was more better.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again, WE have the worst wide receiving core in the league. The worst. So if we don't sign marshall or TO, then we have to draft bryant. Either that or hope thy ochocinco doesn't resign with the bengals and sign him.

OK guys I will play devil's advocate and give the trifecta the benefit of the doubt. Does anybody think that maybe they are sitting back and waiting for the price of some of these wide receivers to come down? What if they actually have a plan as far as adding a WR. What if they are waiting for all the musical chairs to stop and realize there will still be players available. What if the price for Marshall and Jackson and someone like Floyd and Moore has gone down. They'll look like the smart guys then, no? Am I being too generous?

TOOL BAG?!?!?!?

I like it.

NJ, tampaphin has a question about Jacoby Ford. I'm already on record with loving the little guy more than Dexter McCluster and provided my view yesterday as him being an excellent 4th rd pick. Please add and stop the blog cat fights already. You're a grown man :)

I don't care what reports are out there about Bryant. He is a player. He is the best wide receiver in this draft and if he can run around a 4.55 he will be gone by no later then 11. Which is obviously one pick ahead of Miami. I see three players on Miami's radar. In no particular order Dan Williams NT, Sergio Kindle OLB and Brandon Graham OLB/DE. I don't see them taking Earl Thomas but I could definitely be way off.

What's the word on Patrick Turner??? Bust???

You would like it . LOL !!!

NJ - How many times you going to pollute the blog with your worthless comments like your comment @ 3:40??

4 years 28 million for Antonio Bryant... Wow...

Thigpen showed in one game his athletic ability but I think he'll get traded before the draft to someone needing a backup QB (especially if it looks like Pennington will recover from his injury on time). Maybe traded to Cleveland or some other team that's tinkering with the Wildcat. Hopefully they can get someone that can start with his pick. I believe White will be given one more year to prove himself.

Andy NJ - You don't know Deez Bryant is the best WR in the draft. That is pure speculation and no one really knows how his game will transist into the NFL until he actually gets on the field for the first time in a few years...

I would rather read NJ and his flavor of the week arguing about pee contest than read your garbage any day of week

Jamillion get you the news first!

Antonio Bryant signs with the Bengals, 4yrs $28mil

Meaning they won't go for TO.

Our best two remaining options:

Dez Bryant at #12 or TO for the next 2 yrs!?

Dez has the tools to be elite in the NFL, it's not his fault he didn't have a father figure and it's no reason to quit on anyone. With the right leadership you can change people's lives.

As important as the WR can save this franchise, true leadership can save a life (Dez Bryant). If he's available, I hope the fins don't take the easy way out by thinking "this kid is a problem, no tahnks" They didn't do that with Vontae last year and it paid off so far in year 1.

TO would be an instant fix for atleast two years, if nothing after the draft and TO is still available - I say yes to TO or we can say NO to a playoff run.

Miami will rightfully pass on this Diva WR. The risk of him being a superstar compared to him being a total bust is just too great to risk the #12 pick,

I'll keep saying this until the draft, Miami will not draft a WR at all in the 2010 draft. Rather they will wait until 2011 when as many as eight (8) WRs will be drafted in round 1. This way they can get a super prospect that is a grounded and classy kid and not some punk like Bryant.

We scored 23 points v. Indy and lost.
We scored 34 points v. N Orleans and lost.
We scored 24 points v. Tennessee and lost.
We scored 20 points v. Houston and lost.
We scored 24 points v. Pittsburgh and lost.

We need DEFENSE. We need to draft DEFENSE. A better DEFENSE last year and we would have made the playoffs.

I didn't like the Pat Turner pick but it is too early to call him a bust. It takes some guys 3 years before they make an impact. Until you see him on the field and suck... You can't call him a bust. He was decent in the preseason. Will see what his second year will bring. He also was injured at the end of the year right when he wasn't starting to get some playing time on the special teams.

Jamillion sound to me like someone with foodstamp

tampafin - Yeah I agree I don't see us keeping Thigpen and 4 QB's. The only way we do keep him is to list White as a RB or WR, which I don't think we will do. We will not drop White and already have to many RB's and Wr's on the team. Thigpen looks to be the odd man out and hopefully we will get some value for him in a trade. Browns are not going to trade for him when they just signed Wallacec and have Quinn still...

I dont see why anyone would be upset if we take Dez Bryant at #12. From this video, I see one hell of a wide reciever and athlete. Isnt that one of our needs? reciever? oh yeah....didnt Randy Moss have big character probs coming into the draft? and "off the field issues." how did he turn out? If he's there, take him. If not, draft a massive defensive tackle that eats guys like rex ryan for lunch. Thanks.....good day.

Indiana, how are you going to pollute a blog like the one you did on the mandich mad dog get well blog with disrespectful comments about who miami was going to draft and what miami's needs are?? You were the only fraeking simpleton who brought footbal during a get well blog. that 's called polluting. I called you put on that and you brought you're crying and embarrassment to this blog. No continue your crying. MOMMY will be calling you for your milk bottle soon . WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH WAAAAAAAAHHHHH WAHHHHHHHH

" Called you out "

VegasMiamiDon, I don't think the Dolphins would box themselves in the corner by saying we will not pick a WR because if the value is there they will pull the trigger even in back to back rounds....

You are right about 2011... There will be quite a few number 1's in that draft... Floyd from Notre Dame is an example... He is a beast.

LOL @ carlito from golfito @ s:48

Jamillion - That is old news about the BUNGALS and has been reported on this blog a few times already...

I wouldn't fully object to TO being a Dolphin. Only a 1 year witha year 2 club option. He would be a quick fix and then our young guys would be able mature and get better. Although TO does come with his DIVA attitude I doubt it happens, but he can still play!

I hear NJ have more pollution than any other state even NY because places like NY hear about how much NJ state (not phin fan) like garbage and pollution and send to them their garbage.

Am i the only one who's really high on Brian Hartline? If this guy has alot more field time instead of Ginn,i think he's in for a terrific season

he might be there in the 2nd

carlito . thanks for the previous post and staten island NY has one of the biggest garbage dump site on the entireeast coast along with some places in florida

So it is disrespectful to discuss football on a football blog? When does that happen? I was not saying anything disrespectful towards anyone. Heck mad Dog probably would like us to discuss football on the blog. GET OVER IT, NO ONE IS CRYING BUT YOU, toolbag!!

carlito from golfito sounds like Castro's son in law, mariconson!!

Mark - I feel there was a lot of improvement with hartline throughout the year. For a rookie who was underrated, I thought he did well. Towards the end of the season it seemed like Ginn and Hartline were getting much more comfortable with each other. Hartline will be a Dolphin for a while at least IMO...

Castro have a daughter? Is she hot?

craig miller

I really do---his type of skills he possesses with his frame and length---this kis is super young and already weighs 270 and is 6"5---he could bulk up another 10 pounds easy in his upperbody w/o losing speed---this type of speciman i havent seen in a long time---

He will be compared to gaines adams and that is far, but i will say if gaines adams would of been put in a good scheme in a different situation i think his career could of been better--saying that i think JPP skill set is more impressive---he already uses his hands well--and he holds up in the run game, but the thing i like the most is his abilty to get off the ball and anticipate the snapp count
