Dez Bryant 'a kid that really needs guidance'

Oklahoma State's Pro Day is today and Dez Bryant is not participating, according to published reports.

Apparently Bryant is still not ready to run for the scouts after he skipped the workout portion of the Indianapolis Combine last month. Bryant cited a lingering hamstring problem at the Combine and apparently it is still not 100 percent. Remember also that Bryant has not played football since September of 2009 because he was suspended by the NCAA for lying to them.

Bryant's "handlers" are telling people the wide receiver will run at a private Pro Day later this month in his hometowm of Lufkin, Tex.

And I can hear the hand-wringing already from the skeptics: Oh my God, he's not working out again! He will surely be a bust!

Look, the same folks worried that Bryant will be a bust because he didn't work out at the Combine or at his Pro Day have zero criticism of the fact Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford didn't work out at the Combine and skipped Oklahoma's Pro Day on Tuesday.

Bradford will work out for team later this month and no one is ripping him about it, so spare me the drama.

But ...

There are a myriad other reasons to be seriously concerned about Bryant as a draft pick, and more specifically as a possible No. 12 pick in the first round to the Miami Dolphins.

And teams are definitely weighing those concerns as this report in the National Football Post shows. There are teams wondering about Bryant to the point that I spoke to one scout last week that wondered aloud if Bryant might not eventually be taken off the board of some teams, although not his own.

"One of the things I know we've done already is go beyond the field on this kid," the scout told me. "If you don't do that with him, you have no idea what you're getting and how to manage it. He's a kid that had trouble with his grades. He struggled to get eligible. But if you dig you find out it is not because he's stupid but partly because he lived in like three different homes growing up. He was sleeping on the floor some nights. He wasn't exactly nurtured, know what I mean? I can see how grades can suffer."

Anyone that does digging on Bryant will find out his mother had three children by the time she was 18 years old. At the age of 23, she had to give her kids up because she was busted for selling crack cocaine. She served 18 months.

Bryant's father?

No sign of him.

"He's a kid that really needs guidance," the scout told me. "Whatever team takes him is getting a player that has all the tools on the field. But whatever team takes him will have to do a lot of work to make sure he get on the field.

"He would be a good fit for a team that has a strong veteran receiver already on the roster that can take him under his wing. Frankly, it might also be smart to hire somebody to make sure he gets to practice and meetings on time. You might need someone to help him with the playbook. You'll have to watch him early on to teach him how to become a professional. He's nowhere near ready to be a professional right now. He might get there and there might be bumps along with the way. But if you're asking right now, he's not ready to be trusted off the bat in my opinion."

That will not deter one team. Someone will invest a pick on Dez Bryant. His physical skills and potential are vast. Are the Miami Dolphins that team?

At No. 12?

[Update 2:15 p.m.: Information from Alabama's Pro Day coming in: NT Terrence Cody weighed in at 348-349 depending on whom you believe and did 32 reps of 225 pounds. Linebacker Rolando McClain ran a 4.74 time on some stopwatches in the 40-yard dash.]

[Update 4:15: Dolphins hosted no free agents on Wednesday.]

Carlito seriously have u ever said anything of value? Or are u just at home sitting in ur own stool watching the view?

Dez will be there at #12 and while on the clock, the Fins will give up the pick to the Titans and use the #16 on Dan Williams! That would be nice if it did happen..

Nobody and I mean NOBODY ! but a toolbag ( LOL ) , buffoon , simpleton would talk about jared odrick , the draft amd who miami needs during a blog about a man fighting cancer like you did. You were the only jackA$$ who did . You actually asked a question a about football and nobody answered you because the knew better and thought what a BUFFOON this guy is !!! WAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH WAAAAAAAAAAHHHH !!

If I'm not mistaken,Adrian Peterson couldn't recite the alphebets that well either. It's a hit or miss on these kids coming out of college,so the question remains.....do you feel lucky?

Nj that get well log was vomit, mando sounds horrible doing that. We all have had someone affected by cancer, a dolphins blog is not the time to talk about it, let alone say that sports are nothing in life.

I agree Indiana. I think Hartline will turn into a very good NO2 and i know it's a long shot, but he could be the elite WR this team so desperately needs...

Castro's daughter is pretty hott, just ask T.O.!!

carlito le gusta pitar en el golfito

I think there is a plan to add a WR or two this year. And I think they want to go young and probably thru the draft. Someone who can learn and grow with Henne. Maybe Boldin at 30 wouldn't have been a good fit. It's just depressing to imagine another Hartline/Turner draft. I know, Hartline was good at times and may turn in to a solid possession guy for years to come. But I'm old enough to remember Duper/Clayton and even Nat Moore week in and week out and man do I miss having game changing WRs. Especially in this era of Manning, Brees and the like.

I watched too many Notre Dame games this year and think Golden Tate is as polished as anyone I've seen. If it must be thru the draft let's trade up (too hard to trade down) and grab him in the late 20s. I think Clausen will be another Cade McNown and was made to look better than he is by Tate in particular. So in three years when Clausen is in the pro bowl and Tate on someone's practice squad please feel free to rip me on this post.

Damn carlito does anyone like u?

Do you agree with Indiana that T.O. could be a good fix for one to two years?

He did seem to be more low key last year and he put up some good numbers for a bad team.

" I think hartline will be a dolphin for awhile .. " . Indiana . WOOOOWW , there's a revelation and some insight . LMFAO !!!!!!!!

Hartline can't be an elite receiver unless he has a one, like Welker has moss. He's definitely our two though. Where's our one?

Thirty isn't that old guys. To is 36 and still elite.

Oh Yeah , i forgot about indiana saying he wants TO ON MIAMI from the other day. NOW that gets BUFFOON POST OF A LIFETIME AND HALL OF FAME STATUS !!!

It's a shame the guys who spend the most time on here are the ones who would rather bash everyone else's comments than actually discuss football maturely and respectfully.

NJ - The last time I checked this blog was Miami Dolphins In Depth. If I made some disrespectful comment about the guy or cancer I could see bashing me, but a simple question about football...nothing wrong with that!!

Signed, LMFAO!

i 2nd that Inimounts..cheers!

I'm a big fan of Hartline's too. Just not sure you could ever call him a number one receiver.

To the guy who said, 'take a chance on Bryant. We did the same with Vontae and that seems to have worked out OK'. Couple of things....Vontae was taken at 25 and not 12. Big difference in the money and also the guaranteed part. Secondly, Vontae was never known as a guy who showed up late for meetings and practices and games. We're seeing that from Bryant already. And we are by no means out of the woods with Vontae. The coaches are going to have to stay on him and work him hard. His NFL career is off to a good start but he has really done anything yet.

There's no question Bryant has talent. But is he a guy you want to hold out as your number one receiver....a guy you want to be one of your leaders on the team. I'm just thinking, if this guy shows all these red flags in College, aren't things going to get worse for him when he's asked to become and act like a professional and he makes all this money. If a guy has attitude and work ethic problems before he turns pro is it reasonable to expect that they are going to go away when the expectations and the pressures are amplified? I can't see that this is the kind of guy Parcells wants on his team.

Im, pot meet kettle.

I didn't say I wanted TO on Miami, so get your facts straight befre you try to play the gotcha games again NJ...

Here is what I said about TO 4 days ago...

I know this is slightly crazy, but I think they should possibly target TO. I know Parcells and him have a history and TO is a diva. He has never caused problems in his first year. I think he would be good for Hartline and Turner, maybe even Ted Ginn. No one can argue TO has the talent, so with that combined with his experience and it could work out in our favor. It would also give our young corners practice against a really talented WR. Do we chance his diva attitude for a year???

Sorry to disagree buddy but what makes you think Miami wont make the playoffs without TO?

Maybe Hartline will have an impressive season. Maybe Turner will start to show why Parcells picked him in the 3rd.

So in that last post where did I say "I WANTED TO"??

Like I said NJ get your facts straight buddy. You tried to call me out and it didn't work. You were WRONG!! Get over it TOOLBAG!!

INDIANA yes you did LIAR !!! you said it the other day and tampafin just backed that up on his post at 4:08 pm.I got my FACTS STRAIGHT !!! BUFFOON POST OF THE CENTURY !!!! LOL !!!

MArk jamillion is right to an extent. No one made the playoffs with receivers like ours (hard to compare since we have the worst core) we need a one. Don't
U wish parcells saw that?

The point about Bryant has already been made. He's so omilar to moss, who shouldve been a first pick, jus like Bryant. He would be a steal, just like he wouldve last year. And I have a feeling he will be available at 12.

I guess what i'm trying to say is that Hartline has alot of potential and i know it's a long shot, maybe he could turn into our NO1.

You never know buddy, you never know....

I hope we do make a playoff run without a true number 1 receiver if they decide not to go after one because I am a fan of all of our receivers. But that's even more of a reason why a true #1 receievr will give all those guys more succes and open up the field for them and Henne!

Someone in there has to wake up and make a move with that receiver position. Otherwise we have to hope Hartline takes a giant step to being a solid starter because right now he’s a damn good backup but not quite a solid starter. Or hope for Turner to have a 180 degree offseason workout to become the best 2nd year receiver who did not catch a rookie season pass, of all time!

I have no doubt that through this year’s draft we will build a damn good young defense but I can’t believe you can have a team with one offensive weapon away from being a feared offense and they’re not even in any talks for going after free agent WR (I know not much is out there but come on!!)

It doesn't necessarily have to be T.O., even Derrick Mason or L. Coles would provide that with a very realistic deal. WHY NOT?

Here's my problem with parcells and co. The bengals knew about to and antonio Bryant problems but they interiewed him anyways, gave it a chance because they have holes they need filled. And it worked! So...shouldn't parcells have an open mind enough to SEE TO and Marshall?

" I " know this is crazy but " I " think They should possibly target TO " . That's YOU saying YOU want miami to go after TO . LMFAO !!! That't YOUR WORDS and YOU just admitted it. BUFFOON POST OF THE CENTURY !!! and you're such a simpleton writing down what you said. :)

I have to agree with you again. I'm thinking Golden Tate will be golden in a couple of years. He's the guy I'm hoping the trifecta is secretly hoping to trade down or trade back into the first to draft. There has been very little talk of him playing for Miami, so I'm hopeful it's on the hush!hush!. And I agree, that Tate MADE Claussen this year. Claussen is this year's equivalent of Rick Mirer or Brady Quinn. He has BUST written all over him.

GOT MY FACTS STRAIGHT AND YOU ARE WRONG BUDDY !!! YOU JUST ADMITTED IT and even tampafin said you said it. WAAAAAAAHHHHH WAAAAAAAAAHHHH WAAAAAAHHHHH. I just got embarressed and backed in a corner. i can't admit it .

First thing BP will draft is someone to replace Porter. We have to put pressure on the QB that was what sent JP packing,

no to Dez! way too many issues with him.

id go for LB either ILB or OLB

after wilfork do you really think BP should have paid 7 million a year for bryant?

On the Brian Hartline topic. I think he is a good WR, but a #2 WR. He lacks the elite speed to be a #1 WR. He made some big plays last year but he was caught from behind on a couple of long plays as well. I think Hartline could develop into a Brandon Stokely type of WR. He has the knack to make big plays but is really more of a complimentary weapon than a true #1.

Just because I say "I think" they should target TO, does not mean I want him on the team, so once again get your facts straight. In my entire comment from 4 days ago, do I ever mention the word WANT?

I posted my exact comment i posted 4 days ago and the post never once said I wanted TO...

Let me get this right he misses the hole yr of 09 then the combine and now the proday. He must know he can not pass a piss test so no to that loser.

" NJ . do agree with indiana that TO would be a good fix for a year or two " . posted by tampafin. LMFAO !!!!!! maybe tampafin doesn't have his facts and is wrong. BUFFOOOOOOON POST OF A LIFETIME !!

NJ - In this comment below in which I posted 4 days ago, where is the word "want"?? Get your facts traight TOOLBAG!!

Were the Bills the only team interested in him last year or did he just accept the first offer made?

If he can put up the same or better numbers with the Fins than he did with the Bills, it should help the Fins.

I agree, one to two years with TO should give the younger WRs time to develop and learn from one of the best.

Hey Indiana:

You're 4:29 sounds alot like Bill Clinton saying he did not have sex with that woman and arguing about the definition of "sex" is when he was questioned in the Paula Jones case.

Just because I say he may be a good to target a particular player, does not mean I WANT HIM ON THE TEAM!!!

Go get a life NJ...

" I know this is crazy but I think they should target TO . " Yes that means YOU would like him on the team. You just admitted it. ADMIT IT !!

Ken - If someone is saying I said I wanted TO, I want that person to prove it. I NEVER SAID I WANTED TO IN MIAMI...

I'd take a chance on TO for a year. Do something similar to what Buffalo did last year but not the $6.5 million that he got from Buffalo. I don't think there is going to be a lot of suitors for his services (scratch off Baltimore, Cinci and Buffalo). Only teams left might be some of the teams he played for (Dallas, Philly or San Franscico).

I think as a one year option (maybe with a club option for a 2nd year) he would be worth a chance. He would still be an upgrade over anything we have and while he drops a few too many passes for my liking, his skills are still good.

LMFAO @ KEN . he does sound like bill clinton > A LIAR !! He said he wants TO but doesn't want Him. LOL !!!!!!!

NO NO NO to DEZ.... we need a D-line help !! Or Eric Barry if my reams come true and he's there at #12.

NJ - Just because I think the team "maybe" should target a player does not mean I want him on the team. There are probably a lot of players that Miami should target every year, but that does not mean I want them to target that particular player.

Once again where did I specifically say "I WANT to in Miami" I still have not seen a post saying "I WANT TO"

NJ = TOOLBAG!! Keep trying to play your gotcha games buddy, its not working!!

You know who has a good work ethic? JIMMY GRAHAM and I think he will be there at #12 or we could trade up for him. He could open up the middle of the field for play action off the wildcat and TE Screens.

Go 'canes!

You still can't answer my question: When did I say "I want TO"????

I say we take Bruce Campbell with the number 12th pick. With him and Jack Long protecting our back it would for sure make our offense better.I think Taylor Mays is a for sure target too with his range and speed. For me if Spiller is there he is a Miami Dolphin.I could also see us taking big Dan Williams at twelve if none of the above was not available.

I'll be the first to admit that we desperately need an elite NO1 WR so i do agree with you. All i'm saying is that not having that great WR we all crave does'nt necessarily eliminate us from the playoffs.

For the record,i hate the idea of signing TO or drafting Bryant but would love to draft a guy in the 2nd. Maybe Benn or Thomas.

INDAIANA , Do you even realize how pathetic you sound ??? You said you want TO and even posted your comment on it. tampafin seen it and ken is laughing at you. WOOOOOW !! My GOD you're such a simpleton and tool !! Admit it !! You made the BUFFOON post of a lifetime. I guess your never wrong !! WAHHHHHHHHHH WAAAAAAAAAAHH

Did someone mention my name - just because?

Thanks, Marcus. Turner has size, I have never seen him on the field, can he be a big playmaker, or no?

Why not just draft the best players available from the U? These guys seem to eat us alive playing for other teams. I like Tebow in the second round. Trade Thigpen, penne and skinny dude who isn't real fast. Tell Tebow that God sent us a message and he should sign for the league min.

Tebow is an athlete. Maybe he reaches us, maybe he doesn't. But he is fun to watch. He is a gamer. He would be a wildcat machine.

Dez Bryant. Trouble. If the Phins want trouble, get TO'; he would be much cheaper.

No way the Fins go to the offensive side in their first two picks. Especially any WR.
