Dez Bryant 'a kid that really needs guidance'

Oklahoma State's Pro Day is today and Dez Bryant is not participating, according to published reports.

Apparently Bryant is still not ready to run for the scouts after he skipped the workout portion of the Indianapolis Combine last month. Bryant cited a lingering hamstring problem at the Combine and apparently it is still not 100 percent. Remember also that Bryant has not played football since September of 2009 because he was suspended by the NCAA for lying to them.

Bryant's "handlers" are telling people the wide receiver will run at a private Pro Day later this month in his hometowm of Lufkin, Tex.

And I can hear the hand-wringing already from the skeptics: Oh my God, he's not working out again! He will surely be a bust!

Look, the same folks worried that Bryant will be a bust because he didn't work out at the Combine or at his Pro Day have zero criticism of the fact Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford didn't work out at the Combine and skipped Oklahoma's Pro Day on Tuesday.

Bradford will work out for team later this month and no one is ripping him about it, so spare me the drama.

But ...

There are a myriad other reasons to be seriously concerned about Bryant as a draft pick, and more specifically as a possible No. 12 pick in the first round to the Miami Dolphins.

And teams are definitely weighing those concerns as this report in the National Football Post shows. There are teams wondering about Bryant to the point that I spoke to one scout last week that wondered aloud if Bryant might not eventually be taken off the board of some teams, although not his own.

"One of the things I know we've done already is go beyond the field on this kid," the scout told me. "If you don't do that with him, you have no idea what you're getting and how to manage it. He's a kid that had trouble with his grades. He struggled to get eligible. But if you dig you find out it is not because he's stupid but partly because he lived in like three different homes growing up. He was sleeping on the floor some nights. He wasn't exactly nurtured, know what I mean? I can see how grades can suffer."

Anyone that does digging on Bryant will find out his mother had three children by the time she was 18 years old. At the age of 23, she had to give her kids up because she was busted for selling crack cocaine. She served 18 months.

Bryant's father?

No sign of him.

"He's a kid that really needs guidance," the scout told me. "Whatever team takes him is getting a player that has all the tools on the field. But whatever team takes him will have to do a lot of work to make sure he get on the field.

"He would be a good fit for a team that has a strong veteran receiver already on the roster that can take him under his wing. Frankly, it might also be smart to hire somebody to make sure he gets to practice and meetings on time. You might need someone to help him with the playbook. You'll have to watch him early on to teach him how to become a professional. He's nowhere near ready to be a professional right now. He might get there and there might be bumps along with the way. But if you're asking right now, he's not ready to be trusted off the bat in my opinion."

That will not deter one team. Someone will invest a pick on Dez Bryant. His physical skills and potential are vast. Are the Miami Dolphins that team?

At No. 12?

[Update 2:15 p.m.: Information from Alabama's Pro Day coming in: NT Terrence Cody weighed in at 348-349 depending on whom you believe and did 32 reps of 225 pounds. Linebacker Rolando McClain ran a 4.74 time on some stopwatches in the 40-yard dash.]

[Update 4:15: Dolphins hosted no free agents on Wednesday.]

I did indeed see that comment from Indiana. I'm not one for taking sides but when a guy says "I think Miami should" it pretty much means "I want Miami to".

Sorry Indiana...

Crazy if any one think Benn or Bryant will fall to the 2nd round. Most of these posters never played the game of football and don't know how to evaluate a wr. Harline is a no. 3...Camirillo is a 3....so is Ginn. Lefel and De. Thomas are both slow possession wr's who can't stretch the field and would not strike fear in any one's defense. Freddie Barnes is actually the 3rd best wr in this draft. If we pass on Bryant...hope we have sense enough to draft him.

Indiana...im with you...you DID NOT directly say you wanted TO...everybody read the post again...Indiana has a valid point....sorry NJ ...you LOSE..!!!

Carlito...get your head outta NJ's asss...whats the matter with you anyway??

Inimounts...you are SPOT ON as usual...

Marcus I agree with your thinking a lot...

This is my take...

Marshall...everyone says he has issues
Boldin...Age and Injury (issues)
Antonio Bryant...Issues
Chad Ochocinco...Issues

And the list goes on...THEY ALL HAVE ISSUES

The point is that many of the best WR's have ego related issues...errr...thats why they are above average....yes i know there a few exemplary ones...but not many...If Parcells is going to give us CHUNK YARDS on offence, he has to obtain a No1 receiver at some point in time.Waiting till next year is dumb.We need to look at TODAY, tomorrow can look after itself.

It seems that if we only select CHOIR BOYS....we will stay were we are...MEDIOCRE

" Alot of people are saying marshall needs a change of scenary and a disciplined group like miami would be good for him ". Marcus . The same disciplened group that couldn't handle Joey porter ?? The team was in dissary at the end of the year In fact , one of the biggest knocks of the miami team was the lack of leadership on this team. Marshall does whatever marshall wants to do.

Indiana is right, NJ is a douche

I am the all knowing NJ, ask me questions, LMAO, LMFAO, blah blah blah.

Bigalfy... It's all about value vs. risk... If Boldin was a FA and would play for the minimum, Miami would sign him. Same with all of them except TO. That's because if you are giving out a minimum contract, there is no risk. So... I think there are some receivers in this draft with low risk, high reward... It's just whether Miami values them when they are on the clock... Then you kind of question their value when they pick Pat Turner in the 3rd and Nalbone in the 5th when both of those guys were probably 7th rounders.

Mike in Houston.....well said.

bobbyd......do you really think the fact that the Dolphins haven't met with Marshall is because of what Nolan has to say. I'm disappointed that Parcells hasn't put his biases aside and investigated Marshall further. It's the one negative quality he has and his stubborness is costing us an opportunity. Even if he has no intention of acquring this guy, he/they need to do their due dilligence on him.I believe a change of scenery will work ownders with this guy, as it did with Randy Moss going from the Raiders to the Patriots.

And Marcus....I just can't see the Jets going after Marshall after acquiring Cromartie. The Jets organization has just given up too many picks. Only way I can it happening is if something is worked out to have Edwards gp back the other way.

Bigafly ,that's not what mark , ken , tampafin , etc said about indiana's commnent, Nice try !!

I see my fan club is here, in fact one or more mught be Indiana still CRYING !!!! LMFAO !!

That McClain is slowwwww , I won't be surprise if he falls to the 2nd , ala Maulaluga last year
everybody got Maulaluga ahead of the other 2 LB form USC , I bet anything the dolphins won't draft McClain in the first round or any other round , I said Like Derek ,I Hope Bryant Is not another Randy Moss and we Pass on the guy

Joey was not a Parcells guy. He is older and kind of set in his ways. When he didn't get his way, he flared up. I think Marshall is still young and still has a chance to be molded. He did not mess any locker rooms up when Shanahan was in charge.

PFT reports that McClain reveals he has Crohn's disease.

Ok guys The Cuban has arrived, What are we talking about tonite???

Craig, trading a 1 for Marshall is just like drafting a WR. They pick like 29... No one they take at that spot will be better than Marshall. They are known for hot shotting and trading picks... Just seems like he is a fit for them... And they are interested...

I can't understand the logic of "Run away from the problem children!" Some of the greatest Super Bowl teams had their share of these guys... You need a few on your team. If you check all the guys on the Saints and Colts teams, do you think all of their records are clean?

Wow I see people are ganging up on NJ, Whats up with that NJ, Who are the Finalist for the Covert ed "Buffoon post of the day"????

Craig M, ONE negative quality, MULTIPLE negative qualities...He will NEVER be a Dolphin with Parcells here, I can't wait till he signs with another team just to get this discussion off the table

the thomas draft. we could draft all thomases and could you really complain? S E thomas at 12 WR D thomas at 43 and nt c thomas at 73 crazy i know but y wouldnt they be good picks?

There's a very interesting debate going on between NJ and Indiana about whether Indiana wants TO or not.

The debate has gone alittle stale but we need you to choose who's side you're on LOL.

I like that Steve.

LOL @ Mark

Mark, Just say no to Owens......

Bigalfy.....great post at 5:26pm. I'm tired of us being so conservative and plain on offence and ultimately being mediocre. It's time to step it up and we need playmakers. None of these guys who say NO to Bryant and NO to TO and NO to Marshall have any idea how to spice up the offence. All it is is NO...NO....NO...

And NJ PHIN.....fight with me if you need to give Indiana a rest....Joey Porter had a good run with Miami. He had three years with the team. I don't remember you or anybody else saying he should be run out of town after he had 17.5 sacks last year. I don't remember anybody saying he had discipline problems at this time last year. Give me THREE good years out of Marshall and I'll be happy. That's more than your guaranteed from aany guy we pick in the second round this year. There's no guarantee anybody we pick in the second round will ever be elite.

And as for our leadership last year, two of our captain's were down for the year in Pennington and Ferguson, Porter through in the towel after he got in Sparano's doghouse, and Williams leads by what he does on the field. Two of the captains just got resigned, Dansby will help and others will step up. Leadership will not be a problem this year.

what's up cuban menace i mean fort wort fishfan ??? . LOL !!!

trading our first round pick makes the most sense right now. we could could max out the draft by picking up extra picks. with extra picks we could take a chance on a j. best from CAL,or a j.graham from the U or cody from alabama and still fill needs with the picks we already have!! we have to think that culver or clemons can step in and start b/c if not what was the use of signing or picking them?? who's to say berry or thomas will make it?? i would sign the safety O.J. from the rams or nothing at all!! i would see what ferg is thinking and if he plans on playing, i would draft cody in the second for sure and get him in shape!!! i would find an OLB or ILB depending on how we are going to use dansby hopefully weatherspoon!! i would draft one of the higher rated TE like the kid from arizona and still try to get graham later in the draft. i would draft a wr and the kid i would look at that, many might be afraid of is the kid williams from syracuse who quit the team for whatever reason, he just as good as dez bryant. my draft would have us taking these player cody, best, the te from arizona, weatherspoon, graham,m.williams, pat angerer and whatever player left if we still have picks which we should. I SAY TRADE OUT OF THE FIRST ROUND ALTOGETHER AND GET MORE PICKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark,They just got rid of one big mouth, why would you want to bring another in???

No to Owens!!! :)

Ok craig . whatever you say about porter. LOL !!! My GOD !!!

Ok craig . whatever you say about porter. LOL !!! My GOD !!!.

Yea let's trade down very simple, no other team is looking to do that

the thomas draft. we could draft all thomases and could you really complain? S E thomas at 12 WR D thomas at 43 and nt c thomas at 73 crazy i know but y wouldnt they be good picks?

Posted by: steve | March 10, 2010 at 05:42 PM

Would you know by chance if all these guys middle name is Nick?

I was talking smack about Joey(DUHHHH)Porter when he had his 17 sack season, as a mater of fact after week 10 he had only 2 sacks the rest of the year, And he kept running that big yap of his, I'am glad he's gone I just wish they could have gotten rid of "THE MOUTH" last year, maybe we could have gotten some type of compensation for him..

I agree b12. So many people say we should trade down like it's an easy thing to do. Trading down is incredibly hard and dont think it's gonna happen

Just becasue trading down isn't easy, doesn't mean they shouldn't try. It would be the best option in my opinion.

Marcus, we're on the same page brother.....guess we need to sing the Marshall praises until it sinks in with some of these guys. I get now what you are saying about the Jets. The trade of the 29th pick makes a lot of sense for them. Just wondering if they are allowed to participate in that though. Wasn't there something about the top 8 teams not being allowed to participate in free agency this year. Was that only for unrestricted free agents? A lot of these guys are going to fell awful bad if he ends up with the Jets and he tears us up twice a year.

And bobbyd, don't you think a lot of Marshall's problems have happened since Josh McDaniels came aboard? He pissed off Cutler who ultimately wanted out of town. That just made things worse. I don't think it's any coincidence that both Marshall and their TE had in for McDaniels last year. He's a little Napoleon, who's power hungry and hasn't earned the respect of his players yet. He pretty much had a revolt on his hands last year, as his team's collapse showed. It would be a different situation in Miami for Marshall and Sparano is a different type of coach. I think a change of scenery would work wonders for him.

Indiana is right, NJ is a douche

A Douche, No, maybe a dick, but not a douche...lol :)

Dez is falling like a rock in water. Taking him at 12 is a reach now. He is killing himself. I can guarantee you Parcells will NOT use the 12th pick of the draft on Dez Bryant. Get it out of your head Mando. It will either be a LB, NT, or FS that will be drafted with the 12th pick overall.

McClain just took a dump;
Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain’s Pro Day got off to a fine start with an expected time in the forty.

He didn’t finish his drills, however, after getting ill. After the workout, he disclosed he has fought Crohn’s Disease since his freshman year in high school. It’s treated through medication.

We’re amazed this information wasn’t out already, but it clearly hasn’t prevented McClain from producing. David Garrard was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease during his career and it hasn’t slowed him down.

Still, we wonder if this will cause teams to look at McClain any differently – positively or negatively. Perhaps the biggest knock on McClain is his inconsistent motor and effort.

Maybe his Crohn’s Disease plays into that, maybe it doesn’t. It’s just one more piece to the puzzle for teams to figure out by April’s draft.

I never really saw Miami going after him anyways, even before they landed Dansby.
I think they may gamble big on taking JPP, he may be the next young JT in their eyes.
But I wouldn't rule out Kindle or even Morgan if he falls some. But I really think Tuna wants a stud DE/OLB here at the 12 spot.

I agree, Armando, and I think he did the right thing not to run if he isn't ready. Look, there is no doubt that on the field he has the ability do do some amazing things, but the question here is will his character issues cause him to be a bust. If you could control that, there isn't a team in the league who wouldn't like to be the ones to hit the jackpot with this kid if you could have him in a perfect world. But, if you gamble and take him, and he is a bust, then there will be a million geniuses chirping about how they knew he would be a bust. The fact is that we just don't know either way.
As far as hiring someone to be his nanny/mentor/big brother/etc, well you can argue that there are hundreds of guys in the NFL right now who could benefit from that kind of "leash" ...that is if you can make it work. I don't know if you can.

its so funny with all these male pillow fights brewing in this blog!! some people give their thoughts and people argue why it want happen or why their thoughts are more valid than most, when in fact nobody here knows whats going to happen on draft day. we need a NT bad as hell to run the 34 defense and the best one in the draft period is CODY!! not williams or thomas!! these guys are DT!! what make you think you can change a players position and he will be as good or better than a player playing his natural position!! for all you CODY haters you probably the same ones who wanted WILFORK who is close to 360+!! mike williams from syracuse would be a great second day pick just as good as dez bryant

Jersey, you were just laughing at me the other day for dealing with some moron and told me I should ignore him. And I only wrote one thing! If you follow your own advice you should be going into full ignore mode. :)

MARSHALL will NEVER be a Dolphin, yell n scream all u want...Parcells HATES guys like Marshall, continue to waste blog space all u want, u have the right to do so..

Crohns diasies????? NJ, not sure what that is, can I GOOGLE it?????

Ok , menace i mean fort worth fishfan, Keep talking to yourself. :)

NJ...Tampafin did not directly side with you...

Just look at the post...Indiana said he would LIKE...not WANT..TO...can you not see the difference...LFMAO...today you win the BUFFFFOOOON award NJ...arise Sir Buffoon..!!!

Sorry but im with Indiana....and Marcus...you are 100% on the money with the WR issue

And I wasn't taking sides or calling anyone in this argument a moron so please don't drag me into the he said/she said thing here people.

NY SCOTT . I just was having some fun with that simpleton indiana . it's to easy. :)

Typo, Disease....,

Craig, that doesn't apply to restricted FA. Also, trading down is not hard if you have something everyone wants.... Its hard to trade down in the top 5 because of the price.. Anywhere else in the draft, it is done over and over and over again.

LOL @ cuban...NJ's man crush on McClain could be in the crapper now.

In all fairness, David Garrard in Jax is fighting the same disease, he even had a major surgery a few years back

I want a WR as much as anyone else in here but can someone please tell me who is going to play OLB for the Dolphins this season if we give up our number one pick? Anderson, Wake, and Moses? YIKES! Our pressing need is on defense, not offense, why are you giving up our number pick?

Respect and Decency

I just want to say this, Bobby12, I think it's deplorable what you said yesterday. Something about pulling the zipper down. Bobby these last few days you have said some out of control things aimed at Sean. If you are a man as bright as you say you are, choose what you say to prove that you are a mature person. I have never heard Sean use strong profanity against you. Just do me a favor and stick to football talk. That is what you said you wanted.

CUBAN likes to go to nj's house and have fun with him .

LOL @ cuban...NJ's man crush on McClain could be in the crapper now. DAMN NOW THATS JUST NOT RIGHT ON SO MANY LEVELS.... lol, Not really though....

You are probably right, Marshall's not coming here. My only point is, why are we as fans OK with that.....yeah, I know Parcells builds Championships and knows A LOT more about football that ANY of us on here (you too NJ PHIN). But don't you think it's a bit discouraging? We're going to go through another season with no true #1 and we're all going to be complaining about there not being enough targets for Henne to throw to. The lack of effort to attain a better receiver is the part I find most discouraging!!
