Dez Bryant 'a kid that really needs guidance'

Oklahoma State's Pro Day is today and Dez Bryant is not participating, according to published reports.

Apparently Bryant is still not ready to run for the scouts after he skipped the workout portion of the Indianapolis Combine last month. Bryant cited a lingering hamstring problem at the Combine and apparently it is still not 100 percent. Remember also that Bryant has not played football since September of 2009 because he was suspended by the NCAA for lying to them.

Bryant's "handlers" are telling people the wide receiver will run at a private Pro Day later this month in his hometowm of Lufkin, Tex.

And I can hear the hand-wringing already from the skeptics: Oh my God, he's not working out again! He will surely be a bust!

Look, the same folks worried that Bryant will be a bust because he didn't work out at the Combine or at his Pro Day have zero criticism of the fact Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford didn't work out at the Combine and skipped Oklahoma's Pro Day on Tuesday.

Bradford will work out for team later this month and no one is ripping him about it, so spare me the drama.

But ...

There are a myriad other reasons to be seriously concerned about Bryant as a draft pick, and more specifically as a possible No. 12 pick in the first round to the Miami Dolphins.

And teams are definitely weighing those concerns as this report in the National Football Post shows. There are teams wondering about Bryant to the point that I spoke to one scout last week that wondered aloud if Bryant might not eventually be taken off the board of some teams, although not his own.

"One of the things I know we've done already is go beyond the field on this kid," the scout told me. "If you don't do that with him, you have no idea what you're getting and how to manage it. He's a kid that had trouble with his grades. He struggled to get eligible. But if you dig you find out it is not because he's stupid but partly because he lived in like three different homes growing up. He was sleeping on the floor some nights. He wasn't exactly nurtured, know what I mean? I can see how grades can suffer."

Anyone that does digging on Bryant will find out his mother had three children by the time she was 18 years old. At the age of 23, she had to give her kids up because she was busted for selling crack cocaine. She served 18 months.

Bryant's father?

No sign of him.

"He's a kid that really needs guidance," the scout told me. "Whatever team takes him is getting a player that has all the tools on the field. But whatever team takes him will have to do a lot of work to make sure he get on the field.

"He would be a good fit for a team that has a strong veteran receiver already on the roster that can take him under his wing. Frankly, it might also be smart to hire somebody to make sure he gets to practice and meetings on time. You might need someone to help him with the playbook. You'll have to watch him early on to teach him how to become a professional. He's nowhere near ready to be a professional right now. He might get there and there might be bumps along with the way. But if you're asking right now, he's not ready to be trusted off the bat in my opinion."

That will not deter one team. Someone will invest a pick on Dez Bryant. His physical skills and potential are vast. Are the Miami Dolphins that team?

At No. 12?

[Update 2:15 p.m.: Information from Alabama's Pro Day coming in: NT Terrence Cody weighed in at 348-349 depending on whom you believe and did 32 reps of 225 pounds. Linebacker Rolando McClain ran a 4.74 time on some stopwatches in the 40-yard dash.]

[Update 4:15: Dolphins hosted no free agents on Wednesday.]

Bobbyd12, that was not me chastising you earlier.

THE POT IS BOILING , IT DOESN'T NEED HELP FROM ANY ONE .

LET.S SEE WHO WRITES THE LONGEST POST ; DEREK , ROB OR NY SCOTT ?

heres what the thing is with marshall... i think next yr he is a free agant and they know they dont want to resign him .....so they jus trying to get something for what they dont want anymore semms logical and denver has stated they will only take a first for him and if there is no takers that he will be a bronco till next year

Good Night Sean. I love the way you run b12 outta of here. You are BEST at that hands down.

Po, what are you talking about? After all that crap you said last night. YOU lEAVE SOUL MAN. ( I"M COUNTRY) Stop lieing Po.

M.VICK WON AN AWARD BY HIS FELLOW PLAYERS FOR GOOD BEHAVIOR .

TO BE OR NOT TO BE ........GREG Z ,GREAT POST .

And Craig the only thing we "blame" Marshall for is beating women, showing up late to team meetings, and throwing hissy fits at practice which disrupts the flow and ruins team chemistry. If you want players like that you should go root for the Bengals. Their team is full of them and it has hurt them EVERY single season. Someone said every great WR has off and on field issues. That is the most ignorant statement considering I can name more great WRs without issues than I can WRs with issues.

OK kids, NJ has just pulled up with a 12 pack and he's gonna "Service" my girl, so I gotta go and drink some "CEVZA" and let NJ service my girl............ (Maybe I should have told him it's that time of the month huh???? Nahhhhhhh let him find out himself)(Happy surfing that Crimson wave NJ...)

ALoco,

Rob gets my vote for the Bloviater of the Month award!

TNPHINFAN, Don't ever talk to me again, Period.

Hey NJ...all I know is that yesterday you happily told everyone on the blog you were going out to do a workout...it was "shoulders" day...now why would you want the whole world to know your such a HE MAN..???

Ive trained all my life, both Bodybuilding and boxing but never say..."hey its back and biceps day' guys...I think that comment...'Its shoulders day" qualifies you for WANKER of the decade...you win a lifetime BUFFOON award...

Indiana is right..!!!

Craig Miller is right on his WR assessment...if we dont take a chance on someone with UNDOUBTED talent we will stagnate..Parcells is not INFALLIBLE.

Bootang I respect and Booby12..not 13...but i cant agree..

If you drill down on almost EVERY SINGLE player in the NFL you will find they all have ISSUES...thats why we have mentors,coaches,managers...to get them ready for 3 hours 16 times per annum...we dont need them to be sqeaky clean...
At this rate we will be 8-8 for a while....conservative rubbish....Marshall is a GUN...use his talent with a binding rock solid oerformance contract and MENTOR him.

TNPHINFAN,

AGREE BUT WHAT BOTHERS ME IS WHY ALL THAT INK ? TO BE OR NOT TO BE .

I just can't help it Alco... My posts match my shlong.... Long, deep and always have a big surprise at the end...<):[

ARE YOU SURE CUBAN ,HE'S NOT SERVICING YOU .

After all NJ loves the "Crimson Tide" Right????

i forgot to add bigalfy to the list .he writes good and great posts .they always different .

NY,

Great post. But I tend to disagree a little on not knowing all the details about who's inquired about Marshall, or any player or that matter. You are right in that we as fans hardly have a clue on all the things that do occur behind closed doors and over the phone. But we live in a day and age of instant information, with an entire network covering the NFL, with guys like Mort, Schefter, Glazer and others trying to getthe scoop first. A guy like Marshall is big news. And no team is going to trade for him without him first coming into their facility. Which would be plastered all over the sports new cycle. So once a team decides to seriously look into him, we will know about it. I am sure every front office has had some discussion, even if only 1 minute, in regards to the guy. As we get closer to the draft, and the WR pool of free agents decreases, the interest in Marshall will undoubtedly pick up.

Thanks Aloco...

Miami 1354... I believe you are correct, Denver would be making out like a bandit here, They do not want the guy, he doesn't want them... and they are looking to switch an original 4th round pick into a 1st rounder. Its like handing their coach a play-off run. They are an AFC opponent, we would have to play then if they made it to the play-off and we did also. Just a thought!

Check this out, i don't care at all if you like me or not. Bobby12 is the creep I'm looking for. Get a life people.

Oh God please don't start talking about Cutler as if he's a good guy. Don't you remember when the Dolphins beat them two years ago with Shannahan still there? Shannahan could not control him! He was running up and down the field yelling at the refs for pass interference calls that weren't there and when they didn't listen to him he ran up to his WRs and started screaming at them to catch the ball. He threw a towel at the towel boys face and Shannahan wouldn't even talk to him in the fourth qtr. His teammates ignored him and he sat pouting on the bench by himself! And you're talking about him as if he's a saint and just had to get out of Denver because THEY weren't acting right toward him?! He called his mother and told her to sell her house because he wanted to leave Denver and announced it on national radio before he even talked to the team. AND WHY? Because Denver dared to bring in another QB to compete with him!

ALoco, no ink is wasted on a blog?

Which Bobby is which.????..i kind of respect Bobby but which one now...???....is Bobby 12 the original????...Bobby13 is quite intelligent tho

MY AWARD FOR THE LONGEST POST IS DEREK IN WEST PALM .

TNPHINFAN, IT'S GOOD TO KNOW THERE'S NO INK BUT STILL .

TNphinfan, Do you aprove of b12 nasty posts? Just asking.

And now I'm seeing a pattern here. You seem to like players who are conceded and only care about themselves. Great teams aren't built with these types of players. A lot more goes into signing a player than just stats. He has to actually fit in with his teammates and the organizations way of doing things. Do you think Marshall is going to be okay with all of the offseason workouts the team does together or is he going to whine and complain that it's too much and he doesn't want to be there? That's just the tip of the iceburg.

Aloco I would be more concerned about the white out than the ink... doesn't that get kinda messy on the screen?

Not much news today boys...here at work in sunny Australia (Melbourne)...Hey anyone like Australian rules football at all??....Im a Collingwood supporter

BOBBYD13 ,

DO YOU BELIEVE IN LOVE FROM FIRST SIGHT ?

"But unlike you, I don't believe the guy is poison". Craig, he beats women. That's just not okay with most of us.

BIGALFY, DO YOU BELIEVE IN LOVE FROM FIRST SIGHT IN ( MELBOUNE ) AUSTRALIA >?

Your Are PART of the CLICK. (ALOCO).

fake bobby,

i am not getting caught up in your petty foolishness.

No Cuban. Why does he leave page long posts as well? :)

Forget Bryant....and forget McClain...for two strickly diferent reasons. Bryant is nothing more than a large headache to happen for those that blast Marshall...you'll sure love Bryant and McClain has a medical condition that today caused him to not finish his pro-day workout...so do you want to spend the 12th pick on a good player that just may not be able to play games in the future?

Welcome T.O. Cinc took Bryant over TO from Tampa.

Good post NYscott @ 8:17.

WR. D . Mason returns to Ravens. PFT

I don't think most of the guys in the NFL are pounding their wives like Marshall has, and then he starts pounding another girl when His wife throws him out. I agree wholeheartedly that Marshall is a game changer, I suppose that some people put a limit on their own Hypocrisy (Speaking of Parcells who I do NOT think is infallible). I personally look at wife beating as being one step above a child molester. Either way it is the strong taking advantage of the weak because they lack the Maturity to control themselves. If Miami were to take Marshall, I would pull for him like any other player. But I personally hope they take the high road on this one.

Imposters on this blog have no honor and deserve no mercy.

Bigalfy, I read your asking about me. Just stay tuned, you will learn sooner than later about me. I'm aboard the ( I HATE B12) TRAIN.

Fair enough Boo. Good points and you're right that if he came anywhere near a plane bound for Miami we would know it. I was more or less saying that the Dolphins could've inquired about him over the phone and decided the asking price was too high to even bring him in for a visit. I may have worded it wrong. The guy I was discussing this with made it sound as if they hadn't even done that and we just don't know.

Derek;

Again I ask you to show where Marshall has been convicted of beating anyone.

YEs Aloco I do beleive in love at 1st sight...

do you....?

I'm pissed I didn't win longest post of the day! Damnit, I'm going to have to work harder on that. :)

As usual Derek, Good post. No teeny bopper here.

You know the McClain illness brings up A Question of integrity, that being was he keeping his Illness a secret or was Alabama not forthcoming with this info???(my guess is look who there head coach is for the answer)..

TNphinfan, WOW, are YOU THROWING ROCKS? No,No,No, NOT YOU. You are a man of faith wright?

Chicago Connection ORD, with the 12th pick there
will only be OLB or NT. There are only three NT worthy of drafting-Williams, Cody and Cam Thomas.
They will all go before the middle of the 2nd round. Williams will probably go several slots
before Miami's pick at 12. Don't kid yourself.
Bryant isn't even in the picture. This is a draft
deep with real with real productive selections.
iF Miami didn't give a third for Boldin, then they won't draft a WR in the first two rounds.

Hey fishey, 3 different women have accused him of domestic violence going back to his college days. Is that just bad luck or coincidence? Hell, O.J. wasn't convicted of murder but we all know the truth don't we?

Anyone watching the 1994 Miami New England game on NFL Network?

Integrity in Football? Surely you jest. LOL

Yes on and off. Great game.

NY Scott,

Sorry man.....I had to grab something to read too. I read your post at 7:54 and you made a lot of good points. I didn't mean to imply that Parcells is in fact arrogant but I do feel that he thinks there is only one way to 'skin a cat'. Now that's a good thing to a certain extent, however, as Belichek did a couple of years ago, he knew he had to change, and he went from a very conservative ball control offence to a more wide open passing game with guys like Moss, Welker and Stallworth. I'm simply saying that Parcells needs to be a little more flexible in his thinking. He's dead set against any STAR wide receiver's on his team but I fear that's something that will impede our progress. I think we also need to realize that he's not going to be here forever and perhaps we'll have to wait until he moves on until we get our star receiver.

NY Scott, I agree with you that the current Dolphins regime holds their cards very close to their chest but I also agree with Bootang.....you have to admit in this information-age it's very strange that we haven't heard a thing about Miami being interested in any receivers. If there was something....anything.....I'm sure we would have heard SOMETHING!!

And McDaniels showed he's not ready to be a Head Coach in the NFL. He's was very close to losing that team last year and he will have to make some changes this year or he'll be faced with the same problem.

NY,

Your point about guys that fit in the locker room is very important. I always go back to coach and 'the right 53' In the last 3 years, both the Giants and Saints won the Super Bowl when very few would have given them a legitimate chance. And I believe the way those teams believed in each other was huge in their success. I use our Dolphins this year as a good example. I really believe the Joey Porter situation played a major role in our fading down the stretch. You can't have division in the locker room. We haven't been super active in free agency. But notice we resigned Pennington and Ferguson. Are we depending more on what they bring to the field? Or the locker room? The answer is obviously the locker room. And that is exactly why I don't think Brandon Marshall will ever end up in Miami.

Dan just broke a run....

LMAO!

Yes. Remember what a offence looked like with a passing game

Nyscott, Can you write anymore man?

WE HAVE TO FIND OUT HOW HE DID BEAT HIS WIFE , W/ A WOODEN STICK OR HIS HANDS ,WE ALSO HAVE TO FIND OUT DID HE BEAT HER FOR GOOD REASON LIKE SHE DIDN'T WANT TO HAVE SEX W/ HIM ?

BIGALFY, I LIVE THE FIRST LOVE EVERY DAY ,I DO BELIEVE .

The old saying"If it walks like a duck,Quacks like a duck, It must be a duck" comes to mind Scotty.......
