Thoughts going into the 2nd day of free agency

Three thoughts going into the second day of free agency:

1. You guys know I'm kinda sorta obssessed with the Dolphins landing some top-caliber wide receivers, right? You know that I am convinced a team cannot win an NFL championship with second-tier wide receivers and the only reason I believe that is because it's true.

So I'm kind of distressed about Miami's wide receiver problem. And I'm distressed about the Dolphins weren't signficant players in the derby to trade for Cardinals star WR Anquan Boldin.

The fact is three teams with very solid personnel departments chased a Boldin trade on Friday. At one point in the day the New England Patriots were in the talks and when I heard that, I felt a bit vomititious. You see, the idea of facing Randy Moss and Wes Welker is bad enough. The thought of Randy Moss, Wes Welker and Anquan Boldin?

Luckily, Boldin ends up in Baltimore.

But I have serious concerns that Miami isn't pressing enough on the WR issue. And the unrestricted free agent receiver pool is practically dry. Terrell Owens is out there but Bill Parcells won't go for that. Antonio Bryant is out there but the Dolphins haven't made any serious overtures of interest as of this writing. There was a report the Dolphins might be interested in Derrick Mason but I believe he wants to return to Baltimore.

So where does that leave us? Restricted free agency?

Restricted free agent Brandon Marshall is visiting Seattle today. That's their problem.

Philadelphia's Jason Avant can be signed for a second-round pick but he is primarily a slot receiver. New Orleans's Lance Moore can be signed for a second round pick but he's often injured and smallish. Arizona's Steve Breaston is available for a first-round pick but it's a first round pick! Dallas's unproven Sam Hurd can be had for a second rounder but he's unproven.

I don't believe the Dolphins would invest a 1st and a 3rd on San Diego's Vincent Jackson or Malcom Floyd.

We're screwed!

Face it, Owens for one year might be the best investment. Is he a pain? Not usually the first year.

Is he no longer capable of playing? I think he proved to Vontae Davis (below) that he's still got it. Owens caught 55 passes for 829 yards and 5 TDs last year. He did it on a team that fired its offensive coordinator one week before the season. He did it on a team that had no quarterback. He did it on a team that fired its head coach during the season.

And his 829 yards and five scores still would have led the Dolphins.

Does Parcells hate the idea? Of course, but desperate times call for desperate measures and it's not like one year would constitute a long-term commitment.

I know, I'm dreaming. But I think it could work as well as, say, chasing Antonio Bryant.

2. I'm happy for Chad Pennington. He has been offered and is expected to sign a one-year contract with the Dolphins. According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, Pennington will not receive the no-trade clause he was seeking for the Dolphins. Instead the team got over the obstacle with, what else, money.

The $2.5 million offer I reported to you yesterday is still the deal but it now also includes, according to Mortensen, a $1.515 million trade bonus. So if the Dolphins decide they aren't keeping Pennington and can get him traded, they must pay him the bonus.

A couple of things:

First, the Dolphins could not give Pennington the no-trade on philosophical grounds as much as anything. If they do it for him, they might have to do it for others. And they don't want to do it for anyone else.

Second, Pennington wants to stay in Miami next year. The Dolphins might trade him anyway.

3. Nate Jones agreed to terms with the Denver Broncos Friday for what was reported as a four-year deal worth up to $13.6 million if he reaches all his incentives. Jones clearly is a free agency winner but I'm certain the Dolphins could have gotten him for less if they'd offered him a contract in the weeks prior to free agency. They didn't.

And that makes me wonder how the Dolphins could let Jones, their nickel cornerback and a good special teams player, go without an offer, but they keep Jason Allen, who couldn't beat out Jones the last two years?

Things that make me go, hmmmmmm.

With 2 young CBs of the future in place, and money already invested in W Allen, and a deep CB class in the upcoming draft, it would make no sense to keep Jones. And it wasn't like he was locking down his man anyway.

Also, it is not Jason Allens fault he was the 16th pick.yes he is not what we would hope. But teams have to have depth. He has a role that he plays very well. Is it a role you would want from the 76th puck in the draft, let alone the 16th, no. But until you find someone who fills that role better, why cut him. Apparently they don't feel he is as useless as you do, as he has been here 2 years already with this regime and wasn't in the first wave of cuts today.

Two words Vincent Jackson is worth the draft choices he's a big target and also a playmaker.....Get the deal done.....

Dansby is definitely a nice pick up but i agree Armando we cant win the show with 2nd tier WR. we still need a big time play maker we should give up our first round pick to the broncos and get Bmarsh. Mcclain was our only real option at 12, who else would we pick at that spot now that we got our ILB any one else would be reaching and our other options to fill our needs like dez bryant or eric berry wont be there. picking Dan Williams would be reaching Sergio kindle reaching, even Earl Thomas at 12 would be to high any other receiver, saftey or NT at 12 would be to high. WE SHOULD GIVE IT UP OUR FIRST ROUNDER FOR BRANDON MARSHALL no other FA WR is worth bring on to our roster
Im shocked that we let nate JONES go with out even puttin up a fight he was a solid nickel back definitely dont want to see Jason allen in that spot now.

You got to be kidding me!! No Rolle, no Boldin, no Jones. Another sub par year in 2010! Parcel has lost the edge.

How can we fill Safty, NT, WR positions with just draft picks?

Screw Brandon Marshall

Uh, 9 picks, u mentioned 3 positions, I think that can be accomplished

Not sure why you're surprised Fins weren't in the mix for Boldin. You said they wouldn't go above a 4th and he went for a 3rd and a 4th

I mentioned we missed on T.O. last year and nearly got laughed off the forums. He would have been, and still would be an upgrade, as would Boldin. Funny how the year before last Boldin was a greatest ever, but, then after Fitzgerald broke out he's just an injury-prone "possession" receiver. The last injury he got was from a BRUTAL hit. He came back and played with his jaw still wired shut if I recall correctly!

how can you say that about BMArsh hes a beast 21 reception game cmon mang hes as nasty as it get in the league now at WR. give me a better option as a player maker out there who we can target

Vincent Jackson is the answer......

LMFAO !!!!!! at the suggestion of T.O. Are you kidding me ???? MY GOD !!! On that note . i'm off to bed . It was a good start in dolphins land today. Nite all .

9 picks, half which won't make it out of training camp, half that will be "projects". We'll be lucky if we get 2 starters out of the draft. It's a crap shoot...

See, there's NJ, with his FINITE wisdom. Jersey name ONE receiver we have that's better? ONE

Armando TO is definitely not the answer hes a cancer. Bryant would be alright but with his and parcells history i doubt it. and all the other guys you listed are all 2nd tier guys who wouldnt bring anything more to the squad than any of the guys on the roster now

With the depth of this draft we can easily fill needs, 1at pick McClain 2nd pick D. Thomas WR 3rd pick Cam Thomas or Terrel Troupe NT, 4th pick TE all 4 can start in the NFL from day 1

Armando, here's one for you.

Jason Allen erased Wes Welker when he lined up in nickel packages against the Patriots. When Vontae Davis went out and the Patriots tried targeting Allen, who was covering Randy Moss, they were met with failure.

Nate Allen did neither of those things. He was given the opportunity on a couple occasions and he failed. That's why he's no longer a Dolphin and Jason Allen still is. Do your homework before you make stupid comments like that.

What about O.J. Atogwe as the FS. Armando said in a previous post that Miami would be able to sign him without having to worry about St. Loius matching the offer because of a poison pill miami could put in the offer, I was wondering what poison pill meant when refering to O.J. Atogwe? I don't know much about him but he seems like a good player. He was the francise player a year ago and he is only 28 years old. I looked at his stats from the last couple years and he looks like he is an above average player, definitily better than Wilson. Let me know what you think

The poison pill we can use on O. J. Anowge is we change his last name to Simpson...no one will want him

Info from front office t o is coming in Monday to talk

Mando, you know I respect and admire you, probably more than any other sports journalist, however this time I must digress, Parcells is looking out for Henne, TO would be on his ear every single play to get him the ball, and that would take touches away from Brown and bess, who are (lets face it) our play makers, I think Bryant would be a good option, and to whoever said we should get Brandon marshall, sure lets get him...but not for a first rounder they should (if they believe it is the right move) to trade a 2nd and a 5th for him. We need to pick up Clark in FA or Sharper, both one year solutions until Clemons can step up, we the third pick we take LSU's nt Woods, he could be a starter from day one and let Ferguson come in as a sub on certain situations and with the first rounder lets take Witherspoon, Imagine that LB CORE, crowder (run stopper) Dansby and Witherspoon (both versatile ILB/OLB linebackers)and Wake (or even JT #99)as pass rushers Imagine Nolan using that, LB core who is coming on the blits, Witherspoon, Wake, Dansby?? That would be a sack machine and then you have Bell coming in with the blits. btw to all of saying Parcells has lost it, well he has won championships so until you win some why not shut up?

That Cuban Coffee is good for the mind. Please send recipe. :) lmfao

The same way the Fins "figured out" how to sign Dansby is how they will figure out how to get some goof WR talent in here

we won't be drafting McClain anymore now that we have Dansby.

mando relax and celebrate we got a great adition to our defense

you really think dansby can be kick outside and still be that effective thats questionable. where do we get or WR help Thomas is a nice pick in the 2nd round but hes not going to come in and blow it up right way like Moss did

Terrel Owens for president-because he's sooooooo much better than the one we got.

but as for the dolphins?????? dude, i don't thinks so and, no thank you.

Mando, are you seriously asking for TO and denouncing a deal for Brandon Marshall? TO kills teams and is so far past his prime that even Buffalo won't resign him. Now with landing Dansby, finally an impact player not wearing 37, and with Eric Berry almost guranteed not to make it past the no 7th pick why not deal for an elite receiver while he is still available. Otherwise the Dolphins are stuck having to trade up to get Dez Bryant or trade down and settle for Golden Tate. Don't be so blind and look past Marshalls ability, and ask for a 37 year old diva instead. I expect better from you Mando

Lol, I think it's wearing off now TnPhinsFan, I getting ready for bed

relax on the wr already....we had to get dansby and we did, great job FO.....lets not cry about what we didnt get yet until the season starts.....remember this FO is always in game, thats there game not yours...besides
Boldin price tag was too high considering all the help we need on defense....3 and 4 no way, why do you think NE dropped out, and they have 3 second round picks.....i am happy how FA started so far....got rid of some dead weight and picked up A stud on Defense...if we get a stud at TE, our WR can get the job done.

Marshall will wind up in Seattle and they will turnover their #6 Pick to Denver who will then take Dez Brant at 6 and McClain at 11. Miami will take best D Player on the board... NT, LB, FS.

Sign Antonio Bryant and save our draft picks. With the signing of Dansby, we can fill all our needs through the draft, including a receiver to compliment Bryant and another linebacker to compliment Dansby. Dolphins 11-5 and AFC East champs in 2010! I am O.T.F.D.

Jamaica, don't matter what I think, I'm repeating what Sprano said, the Giants said and alot of NFL people said about Dansby..Mando didn't blog it but it was a Miami Herald Article about a week ago and YES that is the plan according to Sprano, Dansby is here to play SOLB

What Bobby said means the target is inside at NT or LB based upon best available

And let's not forget we have a 6:4 receiver who is going to go thru a full off year conditioning and training program who needs to step it up and show if ge can play, Patrick Turner

The more I think about it McDaniels would be good trade bait for a 4-3 team. He might be a beast as a 4-3 inside DT

Maybe t.o is worth picking up at this point. Bill should sit him down and see if they can work out there past issues. I think T.O is a bit humble because teams aren't chasing him like in the past. Also, wouldn't have to give up any picks. Then maybe we could pick up Golden Tate in the 2nd round..

bobbyd12. well if thats the case then well have a fuckin nasty LB corp but were not going to the show with 2nd tier WR talent for Henne to throw to we need a legit #1. OJ Otagwe (or however you sa his name) is a guy we should be lookin to sign up, chris clemons could be a player though still. you think Flordias te hernadez well be around in the 3rd round

turn an cough I think you have something in your throat... TO Humble?...Parcells humble?

I'm out of here guys, good discussion tonite, ggod day for tge Fins, great FA signing and tactical releases today..Parcells knows what he is doing boys n girls

I don;t believe some of the shyt I'm reading here. Miami dumps all the toxic waste out of the club... Just like everyone has been whining for... They go land one of the two top FA in the entire FA class... and don't have to give away a single pick doing it. They just bring in two CB and have Allen & Allen also... Jones was Okay... but was also redundant. In total... Miami has opened up the entire front end of the draft, they are no longer tied to having to take a ILB or OLB in the first... leaving them the option to grab a High Offensive pick should one be made available. At this point Miami could "STOP EVERYTHING" wait for the draft and take 3 WR, a TE, an ILB & OLB, a NT... and still have picks left to address Safety issues... So...uhhh. what is the damn problem here??? Basically, I hear a bunch of Nervous Nellie's about to fall on their swords over a damned WR issue that I am certain this staff is entirely aware of... Miami has managed to cover 70% of the Maintenance issues in 24 hours... SOME of you don't give this staff the credit it deserves. I'm certain before the years begins... IN FREAKIN AUGUST!!!... Miami will find someone to go catch passes for you "Play Makers Addicts"... take a long pull of the good, relax... enjoy that we landed a Whale today... and walked away with 9 reasons why we can get anyone we want or need. JJEEEEEEZZZZIIIISS... you guys are a trip!

just got home - and am off to bed (not that anyone cares lol) but wanted to say it was nice signing someone today that adds a lot of draft day flexibility and is going to be a good player for us.

now we have no clue as to who we will sign? ILB, OLB? do we go for a NT, or do we feel anchored enough on D now to snag a playmaker and then build LB depth and a NT in the 2,3 and 4th rounds?

I am still doubtful this group will go offense with first pick (unless they get that lupati guard or something as equally boring) - but really, Dansby being able to play ILB or OLB does make for some lovely possibilities

i hope patrick turner turns out to be a player but i would hold my breath like i said before USC WR like Dewayne Jarret never turn out to be big time play makers. Key was the last trojan WR to really be an impact guy. None of the guys on the the roster a legit #1 we have a handful of some of the best slot receivers in the league

46 days to the draft fellow Dolphins fans - much free agency and trades to be done; a lot can change before the 1st Round. Who knows what player in a position of need or "must have" might become available because they are released or traded.

Today was a show of good faith by the Trifecta - I definitely do not think they are done until the draft.

Needs are now (in order) NT, OLB/ILB (depending where Dansby plays), FS, WR, TE, OG and depth everywhere.

Be it players on the roster that step up, free agents, or draft picks - I am confident that the team will fill those holes.

nobody denies T.O. having talent... If the Bills discard him why would the dolphins want him?

Damn Jamaica, u made me stay on for another minute, I don't know much about Hernandez to be honest, my pick in the 3rd, and my pick of the draft if he is there is tge TE from Arizona GRONKOWSKI..people say this guys a beast or this player is a beast, well this kid is THE BEAST 6:6 285 and plays big, chk out his numbers if u have a chance...

Fins are still a few years away from a deep playoff run. We are building a perennial playoff contender. We are not there yet and will not be for a few years. If we happen to go all the way next year it will be fortunate, but, not expected. Sugar is good, but, meat sustains.

Have some faith in the Trifecta in getting things done.
Baltimore you see mortgage thier saturday's picks, at least two for a player who has been hurt the last three years in Boldin, who IMO will never put up the numbers he did with Kurt Warner and air attack Cards once had.
Yet we picked up Dansby made the defense better and didn't have to give up draft pic(s). Or mortgage the future of this team by giving up commodities which is what draft picks are, commodities.

Stay strong not everything is done through free agency, no need for the spending spree. The draft is getting close and then their is the proverbial acorn or nuggett that lands to the Dolphins.

Exciting times Armando very exciting.
Good night.

Now I'm gone, Derek from West Palm gets the best post of the night...he is 1000% correct..enjoy

good night everybody

bobbyd12 Ill check him out yes cause we need a TE we can stretch the middle. TN thats true still i guess im just worried that Henne doesnt have enough real weapons but i trust parcells and bringing in guys to fix our D should be our #1 priority now.

I gone still guys but its good to talk football with guys that know was up not to many people here follow or know enough about the game or the fish. Later

I wonder if...
Smoke-screens are Cosmic in nature;

Maybe Rolle wanted to "play in Miami" to increase his offer from the Giants.

and Maybe Dansby wanted to "play in New York" to increase his offer from the Dolphins.

...Now maybe both Players knew that both Teams were terrified that they might end up with neither -- So Maybe Two ex-teammates, teamed-up one last time (and coordinated their visits) to Maximize their inflated worth.

Its just a theory.

Then again...

Maybe IF the Queen had
a pair of B @ L L S
then she would be King!

A bird in hand is worth more than 2 in the bush.

Grab T.O. and O.J.(Atogwe) and keep all your draft picks! This team has enough veterans and talent to compete next year while still rebuilding. Atogwe is a ballhawk and has 19 picks in 5 years and 14 FF! Dude is a player and like Armando said T.O. at 35 is still better than the Miami Receiving corps. I like Bess, Hartline, and Camarillo, but you need a stud veteran like T.O. is without having to give up picks and mortgaging your future like the Jets are doing by trading all they're picks.

Just sy NO...

Yeah...that what I meant.
That was more concise!

Seriously calm down. The fact that you're suggesting TO may be the single stupidest thing you've ever written. That guy has been run out of every town he's played in. Yeah he'd be great for Henne's development. Instead of sh@tting all over the Dolphins today how bout saying they landed one of the biggest fish in free agency and cut bait with a bunch of losers. Stop whining about Boldin, it's annoying.

Mike... A "poison pill" is the same thing New England did to Miami with Wes Welker. NE made an offer for Wes when he was a restricted free agent with Miami having been "Tendered" just as Brown and Fasano are now. Being the team making the offer... NE allowed for a ton (I forget the amount) of money...guaranteed... Plus, "Poisoned the deal by offering a the money Guaranteed over 7 years even if Miami would have traded Welker. Cameron being a Rookie head coach got totally played by Belecheat... Bill seeing the talent in Wes was willing to make the deal knowing Wes was going NOWHERE once he got in NE... Cameron saw a little white guy who was sorta quick and said... "NO way I guarantee all that dough for 7 years"... NE got Wes, Wes got a Ring... Cameron got fired... we got left holding our nuts wondering what happened to "Way Fast Whitey Welker?"..

Hey Tnphinfan , funny stuff on pelosi. She's a dumb nitwit who ruining this country with her other dumb coherts in congress. It's a 3 ring circus between the house , senate and obama. Keep up with funny cracks.

Dez Bryant on pick 12, jamall williams fre agent from Chargers @ NT. dont give up any picks, we landed 1 start we missed out on rolle. No one else out there. Secondary is solid with allen, davis & smith. They will be teh new madison & Surtain.

I'm getting sick and tired of this whining about Boldin. Can you please get over it already??
He would have been the answer if we made a trade for him two years ago. That ship has sailed buddy.
You think 3rd and 4th Round picks are garbage to just throw? That's only for teams that can't draft well.
Thank God you are not running this team.
I agree with you that WR is a CRITICAL need for us.
Boldin was not the answer. The only WR's in the draft that offer a clear, legit chance to be a number one are Benn and Dez.
Dez won't fall to us. Maybe we can trade down and get Benn.
Marshall is the only number one caliber WR on the market right now. But it's not worth a number one pick for us THIS YEAR. I think next year, after plugging these holes, we can afford to make a move like that.
Put me on board for the CJ Spiller bandwagon.
Chris Johnson 2.0.
He will be the BPA.
Also Earl Thomas is a baller.
