Source: Rolando McClain visits Dolphins

Rolando McClain seemed like the obvious pick for the Dolphins at No. 12 in the first round when this offseason began. Then the Dolphins paid a mint for inside linebacker Karlos Dansby in free agency and everyone kinda, sorta dismissed the possibility for McClain.

The Dolphins apparently haven't dismissed the possibility.

A source tells me McClain was in town the past couple of days to visit with the Dolphins.

And while that doesn't mean the Dolphins will draft McClain, it obviously shows an interest in the guy. Contrary to what many of you believe, the Dolphins do not bring guys in for the sake of creating smokescreens.

Teams have a limited number of visits and this team doesn't waste those on players they don't like or don't want to know better. This team creates smokescreens by simply saying nothing, zero, nada, zilch, and letting speculation and poor reporting (I've been guilty) do their work.

McClain is believed to be the best inside linebacker in the draft. But for all his production and hype at Alabama, there are questions about him.

He is adequately fast, but not otherworldly as his 4.69 and 4.68 at the Alabama Pro Day attests. He did have a 35-inch vertical leap which is showing good hops for a 6-4 and 249-pound guy.

McClain revealed at his Pro Day he suffers from Crohn's Disease, an inflammatory disease of the intestines. McClain has said he's known of the disease since he was in ninth grade and treats it daily. I am told the Dolphins knew about McClain's Crohn's illness before McClain admitted he had it.

A couple of points:

The Dolphins are obviously not ruling any good player out as a possibility at No. 12. McClain was productive at Alabama so he's obviously a good player.

If McClain is the pick, Channing Crowder could have a fight on his hands for his starting job and either Crowder or Reggie Torbor could find himself playing elsewhere in 2009.

That is, of course, a big if right now. McClain is visiting with a handful of other teams as well, most notably the New York Giants.

SO NO TO MCLAIN

Also: First!

Go figure

Armando,
If they take McClain, would this mean that Clam Chowder goes to ride the pine? Please make it so

Or simply they move Karlitos to OLB?

YEAAAAAH BABY !! ROLANDO F'N MCCLAIN. i never dismissed the thought of Mcclain. Even with the signing of dansby . Crowder is no prize package. He 's the Best LB in this draft PERIOD !!!. He would be the best player availible with a NEEDto boot.

Marcus - thank you for some perspective - I am not advocating the Dolphins take Dez - I don't think they take Dez - but I would like for them to take Dez; the only numbers that are important are 147 catches, 2,425 yards, 29 touchdowns and 3 punt returns for touchdowns - playmaker supreme; and able to make plays when teams knew he was the main weapon.

Besides FS (and I would take Eric Berry over Dez) there is depth at the OLB position; there is depth at the NT position; and there is depth at TE in this draft for those positions to be addressed later in the draft.

I would LOVE to have Demaryious Thomas or even Arrelious Benn - even Golden "call me Steve Smith from Carolina" Tate for that matter in the 2nd - I doubt they make it that far. Henne needs help - and it's not going to happen in Free Agency or Trade apparently....

Karlos said in an interview when asked about playing some OLB, he said "No. I'm an inside guy.".

Also look at Kent Brockman. He is a beast.

LOL@ Sarah.......

the only thing I would say about taking Bryant at 12, didn't we crucify Cameron and Company for taking Ted Ginn Jr at pick 9 a few years ago. I'd like to know how this is different. I'm not saying they are the same player but Ginn had some pretty good credentials coming out of College. He had blazing speed, was dynamite on kick-off returns and was highly regarded not just by the Dolphins but by a lot of the so-called 'experts'. I'm just not sure we're not repeating history here. There are no guarantees that a WR makes in the NFL (see Detroits track record for drafting wide receivers) and we missed on Yatil Green a few years ago too. There are lots of other examples....I think you get the point.

I all for adding a playmaker to the offence but it seems to me if we miss at 12, as lots of our previous regimes have missed, it's really going to set us back. You guys that are gung-ho on Bryant, are you THAT confident he can be a star on this team for the next ten years?

I would rather go McClain, Kindle or even Morgan (assuming of course that Berry isn't there).

You can never have too many linebackers.

If they take MClain, look for Crowder to move to SOLB

Crowder is not a pass rusher and is not good in coverage

Armando,

The fact that the Fins have to do ALL their homework on anyone that is rated a 1st round grade let alone around the #12 area is why McClain is in.

They also have to make sure that "If" he is there @ #12 (I believe he will be) that other teams know the Fins would be sufficiently interested in McClain to choose him.

That is the ONLY way they would be able to stir up trade talks moving backwards in having other teams believe they would want McClain to trade up to get him.

Otherwise the other teams call the Fin's bluff and they wait as their player slides to them when the Fins don't take him.

I am still predicting that if McClain is there he does not get selected by the Fins.

PS You listed him at 249 lbs? Is he on a diet? Wasn't he listed before as 258 lbs?

Cheers,

craig,
we didn't crucify cameron for taking a wide receiver at 9.
we crucified cameron for taking a sh1tty wide receiver at 9.

In my mock draft, which I will post on my blog at http://knightsphins.blogspot.com tomorrow, McClain will NOT become a Dolphin

That's "Crohn's disease".

Rob, McClain weighed 249 at his Pro Day.

Terry, thanks. Typing fast as I can to get the info out.

McClain is 6'3" 255 pounds. That is what he measured in at recently.

As it turns out, Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant showed up on time for his Pro Day workout.

His cleats, however, didn't make the trip.

We're told that Bryant forgot to bring his cleats, and that as a result he had to wear a pair of brand-new shoes, which had not properly been broken in.

As a result, Bryant was slipping, as NFLN's Mike Mayock pointed out when discussing the workout on the air.

Per a league source, at least one team measured Bryant's times in the 40-yard dash at 4.57 and 4.62 seconds, within the 4.52 to 4.68 range reported by NFL.com. He presumably would have run faster, but for the slipping.

WHAT AN IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's spelled Crohn, not Chron. Did they layoff all the copy editors?

We still need a receiver. What is Plaxico Bueress doing these days? Will he get out of jail before the season starts?

I think he isn't released til 2011

It also could be The Fact That the dolphins are looking at Mcclain for 2 days is because he's a DAMN GOOD FOOTBALL PLAYER !!!

Much as I love the thought of Dansby & Mclain roaming & crunching the inside for years to come, I don't think that Crowder is either gonna be cut or moved outside.

So I just don't see the pick unless Dansby would be switched to OLB (and I just don't know enough about him to assess if there is enough value to justify).

Omar Kelly trumps Armando's claim that the Trifecta dont play the smokescreen game:

"Don't believe everything u hear regarding the Dolphins & draft prospects. I've learned it's usually B.S., posturing & smokescreens."

"If McClain is the pick, Channing Crowder could have a fight on his hands for his starting job and either Crowder or Reggie Torbor could find himself playing elsewhere in 2009."

Woah, the Dolphins like this guy so much that they're going to get a time machine and release/trade Crowder or Torbor in 2009!! No doubt the date of the release will be November 5th, 2009, the 50th anniversary of the invention of the flux capacitor, which is what makes time-travel possible.

Waterboy you da man!

LMAO @ Ricky

Wait a minute Doc

I like the fact that you can play word jumble with Rolando and make it Orlando. Based on that fact alone we should draft him. I'm crazy. Crazy good.

Mando, as per your comment about bringing in players not a smoke screen. I have seen the current admin in the past, do 'visits' that left me scratching my head. My thinking was, surely they can't be serious about this guy.

I know YOU know what I'm talking about. What is your view on this?

Craig M,

Most of the hatred came from the fact that many fans thought QB B Quinn would be the guy if he were there... he was there but they picked Ginn instead.

Ginn did not have the direct impact as Ohio State's for sure go to #1 receiver. He was a super complimentary WR to what they did on OFF. He had the versatility of being a good KR in college. Plus his main asset was his speed.

The #1 thing that Ginn had going for him was prior to college. Back long before Ohio State was Ginn's connection with Cam Camoron. He had scouted Ginn way back when Camoron was head coach at Indiana University. He had been establishing ties to the Ginns that far back.

That is why he made his ever infamous statement "We drafted the whole Tedd Ginn family and your going to love him returning punts and kicks." The chorus of boos was like when Phili drafted McNabb.

Yeah I would say Dez and Ginn have a different resume, different body types, different skill levels at WR and night and day different knocks against each player.

I would be very suprised if they took Dez due to the nature of his knocks. His 40 time brings him in with the pack moreso than seperates him.

Cheers,

Of course they brought him in, he's a 1st rounder, look at the list of guys they've visited with. I don't see them taking him as it appears they think Dansby and Crowder will be a good combination in the middle. It looks more and more like we will trade down and take someone totally unexpected. The middle rounds are going to be important for us this year, hopefully no White and Turner type players this year.

Thanks for the update Armando.

The Giants would be stupid to draft Mcclain they run a 4-3 and a Tampa2 which Mcclain is a horrible fit for.

What about Earl Thomas????

I speculated just yesterday that Dansby could have actually been signed to play SOLB (though Omar disagreed with me). It could happen & we could still draft McClain.

Rob you always say cheers as if you're leaving but you never do for some reason.

Sparano said one of the best compliments he received was to have "other" teams say the Fins were a physical, physical football team.

That means that McClain WON'T be the pick. He is not a physical football player.

Cheers,

With McLain and Dansby covering the middle and short yardages, I expect teams will try to circumvent them by testing our secondary - like last year. Vontae, Smith, et al. will have to step up big against an aerial assault. This leads me to ponder if Tuna will look at free agency for a receiver to give our offense a fighting chance to win. There's no buzz about Marshall or T.O. right now because they want the excitement to die down for better leverage later on.

fishfan,

Force of habit.

McLain the best LB...PERIOD? Really? He's got decent cover skills, but the only place I've seen him tackle is by the shoulder's. He stands straight up. He's terrible. I just don't get it. Maybe in 2nd or 3rd, but come on...1st, NO WAY. But I will agree that CROWDER SUCKS!

lol I see

Woah, the Dolphins like this guy so much that they're going to get a time machine and release/trade Crowder or Torbor in 2009!! No doubt the date of the release will be November 5th, 2009, the 50th anniversary of the invention of the flux capacitor, which is what makes time-travel possible

Woahhhh!!!!! Don't u know the troubles that flux capacitor causes?!? It shouldve been dismantled a long time ago.... It's an infernal time machine.

And actually, we all know it was invented in 1955... Thus making it the 54th anniversary..... Sorry to rain on your parade

Terrible ?? 2nd or 3rd round ??? REALLY ??? LMFAO !! Rolando Mcclain is the best LB PERIOD!!!

5150,

I see you have actually watched him play rather than just look at lists or see that he won an award in college.

Crowder may not be the answer but he is still servicable compared to what we don't even have at OLB... Thats where the "Pressure" is mostly generated in a 3-4.

Even if we luck out and get Cam Wake to be a more well rounded player than most think he is now, they will need someone on the other side.

Depending on how things shake out, maybe Hughes in the second round? He had the most sacks of any of the main OLB prospects.

Locke, T.O. ain't happening. Tuna didn't want him in Dallas and that was 5 years ago and 5 years closer to T.O.'s prime. T.O. is probably the reason that Parcells demanded to answer to no one here when it came to football decisions, considering his disagreement with Jerry Jones on T.O.

As far as they wanting "better leverage later on" for Marshall, there's a snow-ball's chance in hell that he won't be traded by draft day. If he's not traded by then, he will ost likely be in Denver in 2010. Given that there is about 3 weeks until the draft, I really don't think that the excitement will die down any more than it has between now and the draft.

Highly doubt either player will be a Fin.

Mcclain is Physical and Could be a DOLPHIN. That's why he's been here for 2 days.

Yes and looks like the dolphins have also seen him play.

they will go OLB or NT with the 12 pick unless they trade it

Rob,

I really never try to speculate on the draft because it's such a long shot to predict what everyone is going to do, but I really think we are going to go with FS and I think it Earl unless Berry slides (I know, wishing...I'm in TN). I would be ok with Hughes also though.
