Source: Rolando McClain visits Dolphins

Rolando McClain seemed like the obvious pick for the Dolphins at No. 12 in the first round when this offseason began. Then the Dolphins paid a mint for inside linebacker Karlos Dansby in free agency and everyone kinda, sorta dismissed the possibility for McClain.

The Dolphins apparently haven't dismissed the possibility.

A source tells me McClain was in town the past couple of days to visit with the Dolphins.

And while that doesn't mean the Dolphins will draft McClain, it obviously shows an interest in the guy. Contrary to what many of you believe, the Dolphins do not bring guys in for the sake of creating smokescreens.

Teams have a limited number of visits and this team doesn't waste those on players they don't like or don't want to know better. This team creates smokescreens by simply saying nothing, zero, nada, zilch, and letting speculation and poor reporting (I've been guilty) do their work.

McClain is believed to be the best inside linebacker in the draft. But for all his production and hype at Alabama, there are questions about him.

He is adequately fast, but not otherworldly as his 4.69 and 4.68 at the Alabama Pro Day attests. He did have a 35-inch vertical leap which is showing good hops for a 6-4 and 249-pound guy.

McClain revealed at his Pro Day he suffers from Crohn's Disease, an inflammatory disease of the intestines. McClain has said he's known of the disease since he was in ninth grade and treats it daily. I am told the Dolphins knew about McClain's Crohn's illness before McClain admitted he had it.

A couple of points:

The Dolphins are obviously not ruling any good player out as a possibility at No. 12. McClain was productive at Alabama so he's obviously a good player.

If McClain is the pick, Channing Crowder could have a fight on his hands for his starting job and either Crowder or Reggie Torbor could find himself playing elsewhere in 2009.

That is, of course, a big if right now. McClain is visiting with a handful of other teams as well, most notably the New York Giants.

Trade down, pick up an additional 2nd and select Weatherspoon or Thomas the Safety.

How do you knoow he can't play OLB ?? You have a GM who does this for a living that tells he thinks he can .

McClain looks like that black dude off of street fighter back in the day. You know the one that could extend his limbs.

I know I can...
I know I can...
I know I can...

I believe that one of the reasons we signed Dansby to big money was so that we could go elsewhere with the #12 pick. Also, I have to agree that watching McClain on tape reminds me of C.Crowder.. He's never making big plays, hes never running people down sideline-to-sideline.. he's just sorta "there".. I've never seen him in the backfield.

NJ PHIN,

You don't really believe he can play OLB do you? Really?

He gets absolutely stuck on blocks and can't shed? How is he suppose to win on the edge?

He is not particularly strong (24 reps at his PD just like you told me) and obviously doesn't like running super fast on every play?

Q: How would OLB even begin to suit him?

A: It wouldn't.

Mclain will not be a Fin.

Because Mcclain is just not a good enough tackler to be an OLBer.Besides Savage isn't a GM he's a player personnel consultant

NJ PHIN,

I saw numbers as high as 4.74 for his Pro Day so it depends on what info you use.

Look at his skillset on game footage...the guy cannot blitz to save his life and you want to put him in a position to do it a ton?

No way... Just like you always told me, you're letting your passion for the player blind you.

He won't be a Fin and he's no OLB.

Savage was a GM - gotta give him that....

E-Mail Controversy
Savage created controversy when he received an e-mail from a Browns fans during the Bills game, which read:

You are easily the worst GM in the NFL. Chud, Crennel and Tucker should NOT have jobs. How the hell do you play prevent defense the entire game? How do you NOT use Jerome Harrison more? Why the hell would you throw the ball with 6 minutes left? This is officially a regime that is worse than Butch Davis'. By the way, just like last week - this email was written while the Browns still had the lead.

After the Browns held on to beat Buffalo, Savage promptly responded back to the fan with the following:

Go root for Buffalo-F#@* you-

One thing I don't get, and maybe I'm being stupid here, is how does our showing interest in McClain as a possible smoke screen help us? If a team a little later in the draft wants him that entices them to trade ahead of us but that doesn't net us anything so...what am I missing?

I've seen people saying maybe that will entice a team to make a trade with us but isn't the way it usually works is the interested team makes a trade with a team ahead of the team interested in said player? WTF

Savage was GM and now is consultant for the eagles . he knows more than any of us.

Good for savage. the fan was an IDIOT !!

Just like he knew Brady Quinn could be a franchise QB?

MARIA BARTIROMO HAS A NEW BOOK ,SHE'S HOT .

Love dolphins. EXACTLY !! It's not a smokescreen. the dolphins like the player. PERIOD!!

You have to feel bad for Browns fans I can't remember the last time they've been in the playoffs.

I despise NJ PHIN FAN

The defense was a complete mess when Channing went out towards the end of the season. Way more pressing needs than ILB. If we HAVE to go defense the pick SHOULD BE Dan Williams (if the regime doesn't feel like Paul S. can get the job done) If they think Paul can I say do whatever they can to move down the board and pick up an extra 2nd.

1st Round (after trading down) Terrance Cody NT
2nd Round Jerry Hughes DE/OLB TCU
3rd Round pick a. Ricky Sapp DE/OLB
3rd Round pick b. Jimmy Graham TE
4th Round Major Wright FS

IT'S NICE TO READ NJ PHIN IN THE BATH ROOM .IT'S VERY RELAXING.

Guys , it's bee fun but i have to run until later. Shoulders Day.

I remember waiting patiently for our 24th pick arrive only to have dumbsted pick jamar fletcher . When we had madison & surtain in thier prime & people wonder why its taking so long to straighten things out.

Hey Butt, it's not healthy to be jealous.

I can sure tell more and more people have gone out and watched McClain actually play. Thank you guys for actually looking at the McClain play.

I thought all those months ago I was going crazy butting heads with NJ PHIN, Mark, Criag M, One that shant be named and others. I would implore them to show me footage of McClain's domination and all I ever got back was one single solitary tackle from his Jr. year.

They say the eye in the sky don't lie and it sure doesn't with McClain. He will be a marginal player and NJ PHIN will end up wishing he had distanced himself from McClain...far far away instead of defending him.

If McClain obviously (you can see it clearly on footage) struggled in college at many aspects of playing ILB, how is he going to do when the guys coming to take him out or carrying the ball are bigger, stronger and faster?

McClain is the best LB in the draft period...there is no other LB that would be worth a 12 but McClain..keep deluding urself that this Butkus Award winning LB isn't on the Fins radar....same people who say NO to McClain argue that the Dolphins will pick the shortarmed midget who has never played in pass coverage as are pick, Brandon Graham. LMAO Who's delusional????

Will you leave already NJ? The blogs are much more insightful when you are not around.

Guys,

Without question Channing Crowder is on BORROWED time. He's unreliable, starting to getting injured more, not as productive as you'd like your ILB to be, has an attitude and worst of all.....he went on the air and embarassed the organization. That's the kind of stuff that BP won't tolerate. So, stick up for him all you want but it's just a question of time before he's gone...I don't know if it will be this year or next nut we will be replacing our ILB in the not too distant future. Fot those of you who run McClain down as someone who doesn't know how to tackle. someone who's slow and someone who's not tough enough, you don't know what your talking about.
This is a guy who won the Butkus Award last year and they don't give that award to guys that don't know how to tackle and who aren't tough....he may not impress you on tape and that's fine....but the guy is a winner. He would be a fine addition to our defence....no two ways about it.

And Rob in OC, going back to the Ginn/Bryant conversation, I get that people were pissed that we picked Ginn over Quinn but Quinn has now proved he's a bust. Ginn was highly thought of by many experts coming out of College (go back and check the reports). While I know Ginn and Bryant are different players, the risk still exists that taking a WR that high could be a mistake. There are many, many examples of guys who just couldn't cut it in the NFL that had good WR numbers in college but couldn't cut it in the NFL. Very few guys at WR have impact right away and very few of them ever become stars.

Read the blog, Armando said the Dolphins don't bring people in for a smokescreen, and since they bought him in 2 days ago, which is almost 4 weeks since they signed Dansby, they must think there is a position for him!!!

DEZ BRYANT IS STILL THE BEST WR IN THE DRAFT. PLUS YOU CAN NAME ALOT OF WRs THAT's NOT FAST.FOR HIM TO BE THAT SLOW YET THAT PRODUCTIVE SAYS ALOT ABOUT WHO HE IS.

WHEN HE PUT THOSE PADS ON NOT MANY CBs CAN KEEP UP WITH HIM LET ALONE BRING HIM DOWN.

HE's A FIGHTER. THE TYPE THAT DELIVERS THE BLOWS NOT TAKE THEM.

Love Dolphins,

The teams want to trade up the least amount possible to get their guy... especially not into the big $$ top 10.

If the team believes that they think you may take the guy but would not mind trading out, how are they better served to jump ahead of you?

Not only that but, the FINS have to invite McClain and show as much interest as they can so that a team has any fear at all of losing their pick to the Fins. The reason is because after the Fins picked up ILB Dansby I am sure most had ILB much lower down on the Fins needs list. They have to at least feign some interest or teams might inadvertantly call the Fins bluff.

I hope that clarifies it for you some.

I'll be posting my own Mock Draft at:

www.whogivesacrapaboutmystupidmockdraft.com

Be sure and look for it !!

I think someone who knows a whole lot about the elephant position in the 3-4 is Nick Saban. And he never put McClain there. Enough said.

Also, most of the guys coming in for a visit are Juniors. Players that they didn't see at the Senior Bowl and players with some issue whether it be off the field or medical...

I'll be posting my own Mock Draft at:

www.whogivesacrapaboutmystupidmockdraft.com

Be sure and look for it !!

And Mclain WILL NOT be A Dolphin !

The dolphins due their due diligence on every player for their records. These same rookies will be FA in four years or maybe available via trade... They want to have as much information on file as possible. Any and every player that may be available at 12 will visit so that they are prepared and so that other teams will have interest. Players that they really like may never even make a visit. Just so teams will not try and jump in front of them to take them.

So Rob in OC,what ur saying is Armando is full of shyt in his blog, thk u for clarifying that, maybe u should reread this part: "And while that doesn't mean the Dolphins will draft McClain, it obviously shows an interest in the guy. Contrary to what many of you believe, the Dolphins do not bring guys in for the sake of creating smokescreens.

Teams have a limited number of visits and this team doesn't waste those on players they don't like or don't want to know better. This team creates smokescreens by simply saying nothing, zero, nada, zilch, and letting speculation and poor reporting (I've been guilty) do their work."

Eric Crouch won a Heisman that didn't mean he was going to be a good QB.

I don’t know Rob. That’s pretty thin. I mean you bring a guy in for two days on the off chance that a team below you would be willing to give up what it would take to jump up and grab the guy you might have interest in. Then they are going to do that deal with you.

I have no doubt that can and has happened but it seems to me that is probably a very rare occurrence. Still, you did give a valid reason.

I hope the Dolphins do draft McClain, so we can then trade Carol Channing Crowder for a ham sandwich, and a used kicking tee. One ham for another, and then the boot.

I have heard the pros and the cons about McClain. But even if Mcclain is all that, why would the Dolphins draft a ILB after paying big bucks for Dansby? This team doesn't even have a FS on the team, not to mention a pro caliber NT.

Oh, what was I thinking? We can find acorns in the 7th round.

Dez Bryant says he forgot to bring his cleats to HIS ProDay that's why he ran slow...and guys like Justin believe Parcells is going to draft this "Genius". Yea right

Marcus,

Real good post at 5:28.....makes a lot of sense.

For all you guys that are saying McClain will NOT be the pick.....I think what you are really saying is 'you don't want him to be the pick'....BIG DIFFERENCE!! But there's not one of you who know for sure that he won't be the pick. He would actually make a lot of sense for the Dolphins to pick him. It's not like he plays cornerback or quarterback, and just the fact that they have brought this guy in shows that they have a genuine interest in him.

I think there are going to be a lot of guys eating crow if we pick this guy.

Bobby, I believe every player they bring in has a possibility to be a Dolphin but not at 12. So if they stay at 12, there is no way I think they take Earl Thomas. But bringing him in makes that a smokescreen. But if they trade down to the bottom to the end of the round, I think Thomas becomes more of a reality. Meaning the homework done was useful.

bobby Mcclain isn't the only player they've brought in why is it a big deal with Mcclain?

Whoever is on the McClain Bandwagon Express can have the slow lumbering, high tackling, non block shedding, non blitzing, pre occupied with blocks, yet shiny award having McClain or Mr. Assisted Tackle. This is FACT: NEARLY 50% ASSISTED TACKLES! LOOK IT UP!

I will gladly take Brandon Graham's HUGE MOTOR, shorter frame to create the leverage by getting up under the OT's when going around them, stouter frame to power through the Oline, shorter arms that are much stronger, hand skills to deafeat OTs reaching/holding and actually get sacks/make tackles in the NFL. He did the same in college with 20.5 last two years.

BG will make MORE impact plays in the NFL just like his stats suggested in college and his game film proves. He actualy strikes ballcarrierers with force you can see, hear and feel from your seat.

McClain supporters will get a swell Crimson Tide poster of a tall guy, with super long arms hugging his Butt-Kiss award! They will have some great vids of him hanging onto ballcarriers along with many of his Alabama DEF mates dragging a ballcarrier down.

Delusional is a two way street...

Marcus @ 5:21,

Excellent point!

Love Dolphins, this regime loves draft picks. Thats why they dished out millions of dollars just to have the right to deal Chad Pennington if they feel like it. They will bring a guy in to drum up interest and disguise what they are doing. I would look more at what Miami isn't doing than what they are doing... Right now they are banging pots and pans over here and saying look at who is coming to visit... And wont dare look at some other guys just to keep their cards close to the vest... Parcells loves the draft and is good at the poker part of the entire process.

Rob in OC,

Looks like you may have to become a fan of another team if you want BG on your team. He's not coming to Miami.

MARCUS, I CAN TELL YOU IT'S NOT SO ,YOU MAKING A LOT OUT OF NO THING . WHAT POKER ,WE ARE RUNNING A PRO FOOTBALL TEAM NOT A POKER GAME .GOOD POST THOUGH .

GRAIG, HOW CAN YOU TALK TO SOUL OF THIS BLOG THIS WAY ?

FishFan, it's a big deal because so many people sit on this blog stating BS reasons about McClain....Dolphins got Dansby, he has Crohns, and then there is the horseshyt about tackling high and he's slow blah blah blah...U don't win the Butkus award by being an average LB...the man is around every play, I guess some would rather not him be near the play then have too many assists...Brandon "the midget" Graham will not be the pick and some people can't get over that fact even though Armando has explained it over n over, and Armando even likes the guy but faces reality...it's all bullshyt,

Glad there are some happy campers here. We could do worse @ #12.

bobbyd, @ 5:29,

I didn't say anything negative about Armando so don't put any falsehoods out there!!!

You are the only one that did in your post! If I am lying then cut and paste my post... I thought so.

What I can do is comfortably suggest that Armando and I see differently about certain topics. Because he claims in his article that the Fins don't use visits as smokescreen does that make it fact? Armando has lamented (a lot as well he should as they are tight lipped) at how close lipped this regime is and now they are suddenly opening up and confiding to him that "We NEVER use smokescreens with draft prospect visits!" Come on Bobbyd, read between the lines a little. I am sure if you are good at your job you have used a hunch a time or two.

Just as Armando is reporting they never have smokescreens Omar reports differently...his report is not gospel either. I stay here because I am a loyal Armando reader and find the posters more informed.

What a true pearl of info it would be for ALL the other teams to know they could closely narrow and take the guess work out the Fins potential draft choices by simply noting the comings and goings.

No Joe, gotta turn over some rocks.

BOBBY12, IT;S A GOOD THING WE HAVE YOU TO TELL US A LOT OF INFO .BOUT MCCLAIN ....IT'S AN HONEST VIEW YOU GIVE US AS FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WANTS BRANDON GRAHAM THEY SHOULD JUST FORGET IT ;

Craig M...I'd rather have Sergio Kindle drunk running into bldgs on South Beach then the short armed midget who can't cover a pass on our team...

OK , ROB....SAY I AM SORRY BOBBYD12 AND WILL FORGIVE YOU .

Craig M,

I saw your post and I am not sure how but you turned it around some?

I have not asked for Dez to be the draft pick and have said repeatedly that D. Thomas would be my choice and hopefully in the second if I were to take a WR that high.

D. Thomas and A. Benn are my ONLY two WR's worth taking in the 2nd round only.

No to Dez. I predict trouble will follow that guy around. He will forget his cleats that would have allowed him to become great.

Thanks a bunch for getting back to me on your post though bud.
