The Pennington contract covers all the bases

The Dolphins decision to bring back Chad Pennington and his decision to come back has raised some interesting possibilities for the two sides and it seems all those are covered in his soon-to-be-signed contract.

Although it has been widely reported that Pennington agreed to a one-year contract with the Dolphins worth $2.5 million with a "trade bonus" of $1.515 million if the team trades him, it has not been widely circulated (that I've seen) what happens if Pennington sets training camp on fire at the same time Chad Henne struggles.

The contract Pennington agreed stipulates that if Pennington starts over Henne, the veteran gets a salary of $5.75 million.

The number isn't what's important. What is important is that Pennington has agreed to be the backup and would accept that role. But, being a competitor, he is not simply going to come to camp and simply lay down -- at least not once his arm starts feeling good.

Pennington will want to be the best quarterback he can be.

And as the Dolphins gave Pennington the starter's clause in the contract, they obviously see the possibility (however small) that he might win the starting job at some point (either through competition or injury to Henne) and would, therefore, merit a higher salary.

So while both Pennington and the Dolphins have agreed his stated role will be the backup role, both also recognize there is a chance he 1. could be traded or 2. could be the starter.

Talk about running the gamut of possibilites.

[Update: I'm told Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis suffered a wrist injury toward the end of the 2009 season and spent several weeks in a cast afterward. It is unclear if the injury required surgery. Davis has since progressed enough to have the cast removed and is now rehabilitating. He could be limited initially at the start of the team's conditioning program but should be 100 percent for minicamps and training camp.]

Come back in a bit, I'll have more stuff posting soon.

I wouldn't worry about Pennington's status too much. Henne will be given every chance to succeed. He is a young QB that is on the rise and this coming year should tell us whether those glimpses of a very good QB are true or not. If Henne struggles to the point that he is costing Miami game after game then he has to sit. We all know from Pennington's Jet days and his one year as a starter for Miami that he can hodl down the fort and be steady and reliable but not spectacular. I don't see there being any chance barring injury that Henne doesn't get the chance to come into his own and take control of Miami for years to come in 2010.

I haven't looked at anyone's comments regarding Ryan Clark yet but I am all for the signing. He is a solid veteran who is good not great in coverage but is a beast as a tackler. He isn't very big but plays big. I would be very pleased with a veteran like Clark working alongside Bell and backing up the young corners. It also gives last years 5th rounder Clemons time to learn from a seasoned vet for another year or 2 before he can make his push to be the starter if he has that ability.

NT can still be obtained thru FA, and than we could definately trade our first rounder. Also i think their are still a couple FA WR's that i would take. Bryant or Owens with Henne's arm could be exciting.

Let me adjust my last post. I said Clark is not great in coverage but he is good and won't be so far out of position like Wilson. He is not great but good and steady. That is exactly what Miami needs.

Folks, pennington is just a reliable sure fire backup...why not have him in case Henne is injured

Im so sure how I feel about Clark, I know hes good but he is 30yrs old and how many more years can he be a productive player is the question. So im on the fense for the phins signing him, if it happens

Im not** so sure---typo error

NT can still be obtained thru FA, and than we could definately trade our first rounder Be careful Kevin, That post might just win you the coverted"NJ BUFFOON POST OF THE DAY" award........

No way is NT dealt with thru FA, not with the amount of talent at NT in the draft...

What!, I agree about being on the fence. I wouldn't throw a long term deal at him. Maybe a 3 year deal with a team option for a 4th would be sufficient. I would like to see Clemons sit and learn for a year or so and go from there. If Clemons shows he is a starter then Clark becomes the reliable vet backup. If not then Clark is your starter for the next 2 to 3 years.

Bobby, Do you want to Nominate kevin for the "Plumber" AKA "The buffoon post of the day" award?????

Why do the Dolphins keep pissing on Chad Henne's face?
His first summer with the team Sporano said it was an open QB competition between Beck-Henne-McClown. According to Mando's blog Henne won the job. Then right before the 4th preseason game the Jets released Pennington 15 minutes after they signed Favre and Parcells gives him a $10 million 2 yr contract without even making him throw a pass. That started a 24 game horror show of BackDoorWildcatFootball.
When Henne took over last year the Dolphins passing game was ranked 32nd. Henne moved itup to 20. He was the only qb last year to throw more than 50 passes in a game twice. He had 3 come from behind wins. He finished with a higher completion percentage than Matt Ryan.
Henne makes $675,000. That's it.
Why would they give the worst QB in the leagues last year $2.5mil not to play and $5mil if he does play?
And Pennington still has not passed a physical.
Chad Henne's agent needs to demand a new contract or trade and frankly I hope they trade him to a team and a fan base that will stop pissing on his face.

" Talk about running the gamut of possibilites. "

Or covering your bases on both sides . Looks to me like a contract such as this , only happens when both sides have a great deal of respect for each other .

I just hope that they don't overpay for any FA.

I think Dansby might be slightly overpaid, but that was the market for him and we gain more than just a player, as we get some serious draft day flexibility with that move.

Going forward, however, I would like them to not overpay for anyone. I think Boldin would have been nice but he was too expensive. In a draft this grea, picking early in a round, I would definately stayed away from giving up a 3 and 4th.. I mean, we were arguing about the value when we thought it was a 3rd OR a 4th.. don't care about the return 5th.. that is still more expensive than we were even contemplating as fans and we are generally willing to take any risk since it is not our money and we won't get fired if we suck.

I realize you are keeping your eyes open to all possibilities and nothing is assumed, but Henne is the guy. I think Ireland said as much recently. It would be insanity to go back to Penny, from a developmental, financial and performace standpoint. He will be their backup and in this league, there is a strong chance he''l see significant action. Itz all good boyeeeee.

Ferguson is a dope.
Now...I think your next column needs to be on Solai - He either makes the leap or not, trouble is we cant wait (draft is before camp) and we need depth anywho... so.... NT it is in the draft, somewhere in those first 3

One more thing. Fellow 10 y.o. bloggerz: The word 'beast' in describing your latest man crush on said player has no meaning than to imply that you saw some highlight reel , a bowl game, a sportcenter, or combine special that, like Mel Kiper, Todd Mc'Shite, and every other clown who actually watches the NFL draft on TV instead of doing something meaningful like meeting girls, exploring the other 'real world' , provides no actual measure, coorelation, prediction or miniscule reassurance that JoJo or Bubba will translate into an NFL player of any note. But keep dreaming (and jacking off ) you @ss klowns. Habve a nice day.

Cuban, I'll give u the pleasure sir!!

that was one beast of a post!

Pricemaster---geez why you so upset dude?? Pennington took us to the playoffs and won the division that year and no knock on Henne but i doubt he would have done that as a rookie

I for one think Henne is our franchise qb and all the dolphins fans ive talked to seem to think the same thing, so i get your "pissing in his face" comment which is totally off base

btw, I like the Plumber.. but in the spirit of the razzie, maybe it should be called the Plungie?

No need to pick up a 30 something safety for big $ we have diamond in the rough in the clubhouse already. V. Davis, he is an Ed Reed clone with more speed and he is a devastating tackler. Switch him to the FS spot and Will Allen comes back opposite S. Smith. Davis can cover any RB or TE deep which is what killed us last year. He can also separate the ball from any WO coming over the middle. This will free up draft choices for what we really need. RB,NT,WR,TE

You can nominate, it's still early, the Dez Bryant, Spiller fans will be out shortly...and we will still get a Marshall opinion yet

so i DONT** get --- another typo lol

I see it this way:
Henne 1-Barring injury
Pennington 2-Trade bate
Thigpen 3-Trade bate

It depends on who gets more interest between Penny and Thigpen for a trade. If neither are traded than

White moves to WR/KR/Wildcat-QB/emergency QB

Brown moved to Ricky's position in WC, when healthy...

LOL @lips and Bobby, Ok I'll nominate our fellow fin fan kevin for the "Plungie"....Also, Master hope that either Ronnie brown is still injured or he get's traded, otherwise look for more football that makes the fins look like H0Mos......

When penny was the starter the coaches figured out the best way to move the ball was take Penny off the field and run the Wildcat.

$2.5million? That's what a third round pick gets paid spread over a 3 or four year contract.

Remember Anquan Boldin? They gut that was worth no more than a 4th round pick? Well Ravens got him for a 3rd & 4th. Put another way Ravens got Boldinf for $2.5mil + 4th.
For $2.5mil we got Penny specifically not to play and still no reciever.

Hopefully I will see Parcells up at this spring training game today, I will ask him the burning questions, who is the Buffoon of the day and How many characters does Paul have on this blog!!! Have a good day

But master, We have the wild cat to look forward to this upcoming year...LOL, What are your TRUE thoughts????

enjoy the game, B12.

I like the way Parcells is loyal to those that were solid, loyal hardworking football players..

I just wish he was loyal to some Miami Dolphin players of old. Sure, Zach wasn't his guy, but I think Zach needs to retire a Dolphin and they should do everything possible to make that happen.

I like Pennington coming back. It's like having an extra quarterback coach out on the field at all times. I don't see the downside of having an expericenced quarterback on the roster especially one who is as knowledgeable of the game. It will only help Henne.

Having a smart, knowledgeable guy on the sideline, that in no way challenges the starter, is not a horrible move.

I mean, we got the clock play out of arrangement like that, didn't we?

A non football "Q", Angelina Jolie, "Ho" or a "well a HO".....

roethlisberger in trouble again .SEX,SEX,SEX

Get rid of White, Thigpen can still be a good backup with a whole fins training camp and some reps under his belt.

thats probably the only way they could get penny to sign as a back-up. give him hope that he might start, even though its not going to happen.

thigpen is gone.

I would take TO over Bryant anyday, Bryant constantly underachieves we do not need Antonio Bryant period. I would much rather take TO on a one year deal low risk/high reward scenario and doesn't lock us into a WR that is not a Playmaker #1 WR, that we can pursue next offseason.

and am not saying Henne is Marino, but that even Marino benefitted by coming up with the clock play with Kosar. Coaches are one thing, but having another QB to throw ideas off of is great - specially if Henne respects Penny as much as he says he does.

also, I think Henne is confident enough not to be harmed by Penny's presence.

Finally, I think if either thigpen or penny can be traded for something equivalent to the value the phins place on them, then one is gone.

and am not saying Henne is Marino, but that even Marino benefitted by coming up with the clock play with Kosar...........................Lips what the Duece are you talking about???

Iam sorry, the jets game my bad.......

meehan, It makes more sense to add a rookie over a proven veteran at a spot we are in crucial need of filling??? right Dolphins want to win now not 3 yrs down the line that is a gamblers attitude. Eric Berry will not drop past 10 prolly not past 5 you make no sense goto youtube and watch how hard clark hits and tell me you wouldnt think him an upgrade over gibril he is a sure hit who wants to win now and has won w Steelers

Mike Florio of PFT is on Sid Rosenberg's local show on WQAM ripping the Fins.......sez Dansby & Clark ain't so hot & ain't worth the $$$.

Sez only reason we signed Dansby or would sign Clark is because of team's needs.

What's so wrong with that??

Bad vibes all around from Sid & Florio.

The haters are out.

CLARK will be a Dolphin by the end of the day which leaves us only NT, WR, and OLB needs left. There are no good free agent OLBs or WRs left with the exception of Brandon Marshall. If you can get Marshall for a 2nd round pick plus Ginn, then do it. Kemoeatu or Jamal Williams are 3/4 free agent possiblitites at NT, but they are both coming off injuries.

For the draft, there is no way Dez Bryant gets past Denver at 11. That would leave us with either Dan Williams, Sergio Kindle, and CJ Spiller as our first round possibilities. Jerry Hughes and Demaryius Thomas are second round possibilities. Cam Thomas, Mardy Gilyard, and Carlton Mitchell are third round guys.

Dansby is a G. 6 yr player out of Auburn He is gonna fill that hole we've had in our Defense since Zach Thomas left

First, the Sham Wow and Slap Chop Guy rules!!!

You're gonna love my nuts!!!

Second, Andy NJ and Bobby - I happen to agree with you, Earl Thomas doesn't look to be the #1 pick.

Third, it appears it's down to Derrick Morgan and Dan Williams - maybe Sean Weatherspoon.

LOL @ mark.......

The Steelers just replaced Clark with SS Allen from the Bucs...three year Deal.

Will Allen and the Steelers make a deal. That pretty much confirms Clark is not going back to the Steelers and will be signed sometime today by the Dolphins IMO

yes fins get clark, hes a decent safety. better than wilson but nothing great. we need playmakers on offense!!!!

please dont trade thigpen (YET)...i believe that he can be a starter in this league. He looked damn good in limited time last year, yes he made some mistakes but he also made some serious plays.

white must show he belongs this offseason if not he is gone...pennington is just a one year deal so dont deal our future backup when we will need him next year. and a great safety valve if henne struggles or gets injured.

then when he shows well in some preseason games in future he can be delt for a 2nd or 3rd rounder as so many teams have done with backups before him.

still on my offseason list...

#1 resign JT...his locker room precense alone should keep him here plus he still has a motor on 3rd downs. getting sacks and big plays on 3rd down can not be understated.

#2 decide on the NT position...i think this will come in the draft...i have liked williams from day 1 for us with our #1 pick and am standing by it. Arguably the most important position in the 3-4 is the NT so why wait. It may not be as sexy as a ILB but far more valuable. You look at ever great 3-4 defense and the MLB enjoys a stud in front of him, name one that doesn't.

#3 double down on LB's..at least one OLB and ILB must be drafted no more veterans we have plenty of them already at those positions.

#4 find a playmaker on offense...i am not a huge fan of drafting spiller with our #1 pick...but at the same time it wouldn't be a horrible idea. he would add a dimension to our offense we are missing and who knows RB and RW may not even be here after this next year.

#5 explore adding olsen...I think he can be had for a 2nd round pick...would you not add a proven pro bowl capable TE for a 2nd round pick? this would lessen the need for a great WR which i don't see coming this year.

#6 solve the FS situation or see what clemons has. i am still weary of clark...yes he is a big hitter and i think that would be nice to have, but i am more concerned with a ball hawk safety...i do like earl thomas a lot too just not that high at 12...trading down and accumulating picks might be enticing...as we could wait on kindle, williams, or thomas later...i think spiller or bryant have the ability to draw attention at that #12 spot if still there..

jt will most likely be resigned in july. nt will be a draft pick. lb's, well we have signed a bunch of garbage ones last couple years. need playmakers on offense but havent tried for any. miami is not interested in olsen, patriots as we speak are trying to get him.

If we pick Kindle im going to lose my mind...

they wont pick kindle, they are trying hard to move down. they love spiller and 12 is much to high to take him

Smells like Tuna- why does it appear those are the only people goign to be available at 12?? where did that thought come from?

who loves spiller??

We've lost Rolle, Boldin & now Will Allen the Safety to Pitts....inexcusable.

ya, cause i'm going to take the time to read that beast, ryan

I'm not a fan of Pennington around for just one year. I'd rather have someone around to develop like Thigpen than have to go through this same routine next year.

Let's face it, Miami is still at least two years away from being any sort of contender. There are just too many holes to fill so if Pennington is in at QB it's not going to be much different than having somebody like Thigpen in there. If White is in there we might not win any games.

As for the draft, I'd be surprised if Miami even drafts a WR. I think they wait until the super deep 2011 WR class instead of taking a flier on anybody this year especially with so many holes to fill on defense. This way they can see who really pans out (Turner?), who they want to keep (Hartline, Bess) and who gets cut loose (Ginn,, Camarillo)

Does anybody consider Miles Austin to be a #1 WR because if so we just might have a true #1 WR already on the roster . His name is Brian Hartline. I think this kid is going to be a monster and I think he has the potential to be a true #1 and the same type of WR as Miles Austin.

Miami won't pick a NT or a S with their #1 pick either. Maybe in the second round but not the first. It will be somebody who can rush the passer. Based on history I see two OLBs drafted and two NTs drafted along with a S, TE, OL, and ILB.

Bobbyd12 , i see your buddies aloco and the cuban menace are here . :)

Ficklefan????????? what part of the idea that we paid dansby so much that he would be the one big name we got??? what do you expect... They made a major move and if they werent making that move on dansby it would have been made on another player. Seriously what do you expect from them???? I really dont think we missed anything on the three you mentioned
