I don't know about you, but I'm feeling fairly comfortable with what the Dolphins are doing so far in this draft -- assuming the players they are picking become instant contributors.
I expect Jared Odrick to be a starting DE in 2010. I expect Koa Misi to be a starting OLB in 2010 -- the Dolphins obviously do also based on the tact they've taken this offseason. I expect John Jerry to be the starting LG in 2010.
The Dolphins desperately need all three to be starters.
The Dolphins need to find one more starter today to make this draft a resounding success. They need to find a starting free safety somewhere in rounds 4-7. One guy in seven picks. That's all I'm asking for.
Six safeties were drafted in Day 2. Nate Allen, T.J. Ward, and Taylor Mays went in the second round. Morgan Burnett, Major Wright and Chad Jones went in the third round.
The fourth round begins in earnest at 10 a.m. The Dolphins can still land:
Reshad Jones (my prediction, if he's there), Robert Johnson (another Utah player whose selection wouldn't upset me).
After the fourth round, the value picks at safety are East Carolina's Van Eskeridge, Nebraska's Larry Asante, a former junior college linebacker who plays with that mentality. He seems more like a strong safety to me but, well, whatever.
The darkhorses? Virginia Tech's Kam Chancellor, a freak at 6-3 and 230 who has played some free safety for the Hokies or Gobblers or whatever they call themselves these days. He is thought to project as a strong safety but the Dolphins might have other plans. Michigan's Stevie Brown is a great hitter who actually played some linebacker for the Wolverines. He's another option.

I like the Jones pick in the 3rd round. The Jets are stacked in the secondary as are most NFL teams. How do you beat them? Smash them in the mouth with the run and play action them over the top for TDs. The Dolphins need an elite line with no leaks, a strong running game, and a No 1 deep threat wideout to do it. They have that now.

Kam Chancellor adn anthony mccoy are still available I'm hoping for him in the fifth Kendrick Lewis is still a guy who can make impact at fs too
Posted by: beerphin | April 24, 2010 at 11:29 AM
AJ Edds. Versatile, can play inside and outside. This pick and the addition of Tim Dobbins is our way of serving notice to Channing Crowder that he better get his game up. Edds will be a good ST guy for us, that in a year or two will probably be our starting ILB opposite Karlos Dansby.

Ginn was a distraction to the trifecta...as as was JT and Joey...winning is as much about team chemistry as it is about talent...in fact, having led men into war, I'd rather have chemistry all day long

Stra8balla:
3 of the top 5 offenses last year were the Cowboys (2), Texans (4), and Vikings (5). Please name 2 playmaking pass catchers from those 2 teams. I'll give you Witten, but you're not getting Miles Austin, because no one had ever heard of him before last season. I'll give you Andre Johnson, but if you think Kevin Walter is a playmaker that represents significantly more talent than, say, Davone Bess, well, let's just say I disagree. The Vikings? Please.

I played football at a high level which means I smoked dope and sat on the bench in High school. Respect my rights to voice my stupid opinion here I know more then anyone

I am so sick of people saying, "How many years do people here have in scouting, or in an NFL F.O.. By that logic we should all get our pom-poms out and say "Rah!" We are allowed to have opinions. Just because your opinion might differ from the critics' or you might agree with everything this FO does also means that you feel you are good evaluators of talent. I like this draft except for the last pick (not so much the guy but the fact that we traded away a player to move up a few spots when he would've likely been there). Whether I think there were better players there, though, is irrelevant anywhere else but in the comments section of a football blog. Which is where we are. So all those who make that fallacious and fascist argument that no-one should have an opinion because the F.O. know more than anyone else here are the meatballs, not the rest of us who express our opinions - good or bad - about the choices being made.
I don't agree with Str8balla, for instance, but he has the right to say what he wants.
That said - this LB was nowhere near the best player available - and that is not just my opinion. There are a bunch of people who have had F.O. and scouting positions who seem to agree.

Anyone thinking they may want Edds to play TE?
Posted by: Phinlanta | April 24, 2010 at 11:34 AM
Hey look at me I read draft magazines and watch google video of guys and I know all about the draft/kids in it. I'm alo an accountant/lawyer/maintenance man/some other job that has nothing to do with football, etc...but I know so much more about drafting football players than Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland. They should just have hired me I woulda drafted everyone Mel Kiper and Mike Mayock told me too.

I love our draft so far!!! Go Dolphins !!! We will be one of the most feared Defenses in the league next season. We didn't draft sexy players... We drafted hard nosed, tough as nails, smash u in ya mouth type guys. Circle week 3 cause it's on!!!!
Posted by: Phinatic | April 24, 2010 at 11:36 AM
SEER, AWESOME LINK DUDE. I understand it's a highlight tape but he is very ATHLETIC. Miami's athleticism at the entire linebacker position has gone from below average to VERY ATHLETIC. Last year Porter and Taylor to old men and Crowder and Ayodele compared to adding Dansby, Misi and Edds! I love it.
Posted by: Andy NJ | April 24, 2010 at 11:36 AM
That's better memo! Listen guys, I am as surprised as anyone that Reshad Jones or Ricky Sapp wasn't the pick there, but guess what - no one else has taken them either! I have to believe that we are sticking to our board and taking the best player that fits what we are trying to do - remember new D coordinator this year too, so maybe he has a preference of the type of guys he needs.
Posted by: lomax | April 24, 2010 at 11:36 AM
Players I like that are still available:
Kam Chancellor
Riley Cooper
Anthony McCoy
Dorin Dickerson
Akwasi Owusu-Ansah
Cam Thomas
Doug Worthington
Myron Rolle
Donovan Warren
LeGarrette Blount

OK for everyone freaking out about Edds here is some interesting info on him:
Edds compares favorably to Kindle: Edds 6'4" 250lbs ran a 4.67 at the combine compared to Sergio Kindle who is 6'3" 250lbs and is a 4.7 40 guy. Obviously the Trifecta did not see a lot of separation from Kindle when compared to Edds and Misi. I wasnt there so Ill give them the benefit of the doubt, this isnt Rick Spiltmilk and Dave Pornstache drafting afterall.
Posted by: Jason | April 24, 2010 at 11:36 AM
We need to trade up NOW and get Dorin Dickerson. The guy won't last 20 more picks.
Posted by: MaCo | April 24, 2010 at 11:37 AM
myron rolle could be our guy later. the fins coached um in the senior bowl, he even played for the south so we'll c.
Posted by: greg z. | April 24, 2010 at 11:37 AM
Phinlanta, with 16 reps in the benchpress for a LB, they better hope so. Still waiting for a pick other than Odrick to be talked about somewhere other than here. Nothing on espn or NFL network at all.
Posted by: Jrljr2 | April 24, 2010 at 11:38 AM
Morning, I see we made our first pick...With Crowder's knees being as bad as reported I'm not suprised they got some depth here and a possible replacement...
Posted by: bobbyd12 | April 24, 2010 at 11:40 AM
The Dolphins could have saved a lot of money in the scouting department by hiring a group just to scout the Senior Bowl. All our guys come from there any way so why waste money and resources on any other scouting. Only downer for senior bowl is few big time prospects play in that game.
Posted by: Pcola Fin | April 24, 2010 at 11:40 AM
16 reps? Now, I know I can beat that - easily. Get this guy in the gym!!!
Posted by: Mark in Toronto | April 24, 2010 at 11:41 AM
str8baller,
Ricky just have over a 1000 yard season averaging almost 5.0 yards a carry, with multiple TD rushes over 50 yards the last couple of seasons. Ones that come to memory are the game against the saints, and the game against the Panthers when he outran both a CB and safety. Ricky Definately still has breakaway speed.
Ronnie is always good to break one tackle and has great vision; thats what you look for in a NFL RB. Anyone can hit a big hole.
Posted by: Chase | April 24, 2010 at 11:41 AM
Allen you're mad that the plodding Spikes is a Patriot? He is a Channing Crowder type. He had decent athleticism in college. Against NFL guys it's not going to get better. He ran a 5 flat 40. Wow dude. Misi is a player. He is athletic and fly to the football guy. Miami didn't have that last year.
To all you doubters who no nothing about FOOTBALL. Please get it together. You guys read a couple draft magazines and want big name players and big college program players need to chill out. You guys actually think you know what's better for Miami then Bill freaking Parcells. LMAO CLOWNS!
Posted by: Andy NJ | April 24, 2010 at 11:41 AM
I hope the dolphins take Larry Asante. Guy can bring the wood and us a sure tackler
Posted by: Bowks | April 24, 2010 at 11:41 AM
Hey guys check out some highlights of A.J. Edds. Seems to me, he is a pretty good coverage linebacker.

Posted by: Steven | April 24, 2010 at 11:42 AM
Well the Edds pick disappointed me, it looks like they are giving up on talent that have potential to start and looking for special team players. Cam Thomas, Sapp and Dwyer are guys who have that enormous talent. Maybe they have some unknown negative, but they have the positives.
Posted by: twix | April 24, 2010 at 11:42 AM
How about AJ Edds, Iowa. You Miami citizens should tune into the Big Ten Network!!! It's where FUTURE Miami Dolphins PLAY....
Posted by: Hawkfinfan12 | April 24, 2010 at 11:42 AM
You guys are wayyyyy overreacting to the draft. We have drafted good hard working players that produce and have 3 or 4 years of experience. How is that crap? Koa Misi is someone I saw talked about in the last few weeks. You are all mad that we didn't take Kindle? Kindle may not have what it takes to play well or for a while with that knee injury. Microfracture surgery is not good for a rookie. I am glad we stayed away. Jerry Hughes while a good worker seems like more of a one trick pony. Odrick is relentless. I myself scratched my head with that pick but with Starks moving and Odrick taking over an end spot thist team is going to be mean and nasty. AJ Edds....he's a cover lb. We may be okay with Clemons or Culver because of our linebackers are going to get pressure and patrol the middle of the field. I would rather take an unsexy mean nasty team than the popular picks that may not have the heart to be nasty. Have faith people.
Posted by: jdogg207 | April 24, 2010 at 11:43 AM
Mike Mayock's comments:
An interesting pick by the Dolphins. Edds is an athletic, but underdeveloped LB from Iowa. He had five INTs last year, and he's a long, lean kid at 6-foot-3, and 246 pounds he probably projects to play on the inside of the Dolphins' 3-4 defense.
Posted by: heirshouse | April 24, 2010 at 11:43 AM
Im guessing we are done drafting LBs. Here comes a healthy dose of Offense: QB (Skelton), WR (Tindal), RB (Starks), TE (Cumberland) projects.
Posted by: Jason | April 24, 2010 at 11:43 AM
I agree everyone has the right to opinion but if you're just here to vent cool.
most of us are here to have discussions or share info, but when guys say parcells sucks, doesn't know what he's doing, ect ect..
most other bloggers tend to not take anything those ppl say serious.
example.. statements like bess, hartline, cam wouldn't start on nfl team as fact is a joke.
Posted by: vegasj | April 24, 2010 at 11:46 AM
Smash u in the mout guys that can't cover. We will be passes on all day long.
Cowboys have 2...WITTEN, AUSTIN and now DEZ. They understand how important offense is in the NFL today. Roy Williams is also better than any wr's we had on our roster last year. That makes 4 weapons now
Walter is better than Camirillo, Bess and Hartline. They also have a speed guy Jacoby Jones who runs a 4.3 and is about 6.2. Great returner also in addition they have a TE who can stretch the field and has become one of the better ones in the league.
Vikings...you ever heard of PErcy Harvin. How about Shiancoe...much better than Fasano. How about Sidney Rice who is a top 15 wr in this league and a speedster in Bernard Berrian...faster than any wr we have on our roster.
It's obvious you don't watch much football
Posted by: Stra8balla | April 24, 2010 at 11:46 AM
A few guys I like.
Kam Chancellor Safety Va Tech
Anthony McCoy TE USC
Carlton Mitchell WR USF

I said awhile back I believe we should draft a FS late and let them compete with Clemmons and Culver for the position..unless they have something up their sleeve that looks like the plan now
Posted by: bobbyd12 | April 24, 2010 at 11:52 AM
Myron Rolle & Cam Thomas still there.
Posted by: Po White Trash | April 24, 2010 at 11:52 AM
Mitchell will be off the board by the time we pick. Hope we don't take Dwyer or Dixon. We have enough big backs to last a life time. When will this team every field an exciting....electric offense that produces big plays out of conventional packages. We can't hide behind the wildcat forever. especially if pat white is running it.
Posted by: Stra8balla | April 24, 2010 at 11:52 AM
Next pick 145?
Posted by: Po White Trash | April 24, 2010 at 11:54 AM
bella ur saying there are no good 'slow' WR, how bout 2 time super bowl champ hines ward? who i think if i rmeber right had the most yards ever for a WR in the super bowl. and obv. fasano is out every1 knows that. u sound stupid even comparainf anthony to visante shianco. Jacoby jones isnt any1 to be affraid of other then on the return game either. he's just better version of teddy ginn. my best friend happens to be a vikings fan and fro mthe sounds of it you are one too. i mean u thought ricky and ronnie cant make big plays in normal plays. go back and watch the seahawks game the saints game the panthers game even the jets game. and that lex hilliard is a man, the trifecta rly like him. dont look for them to draft a RB thats not a scatback.

Sorry but we can not have Jennifer Lopez penciled in to play for us.
First of all, she is a known name. We don't believe in that. We need to only pick people no one has every heard of so we can say "surprise! Isn't Bill a genius".
Secondly, she did not play in the Senior Bowl. Obviously if you did not play in the Senior Bowl, you have no abilities at all. Out of the hundreds of players selected, only four are worthy of our team because they were at the Senior Bowl and they must also play out of position. The only reason we were slightly interested in JLo is that she has never played football before.
Thank you.

Is Ray Finkle (K) still on the board?
Posted by: cocoajoe | April 24, 2010 at 12:01 PM
Sra8balla, see, that's ur whole deal right there...u want "exciting" big play team....ur not gonna get it, it's that simple, this team is going to be a ball control, smash mouth football team who is going to attempt to control the ball and keep the other offense off the field. U have a right to complain all u want, but ur not going to get what u want...I personally LOVE that type of football and this draft...
Posted by: bobbyd12 | April 24, 2010 at 12:01 PM
U don't have to be 230 to be a successful back in the NFL. You can have good size and still have great speed and quickness.
I question the very big back....slow back..with good vision approach of parcells.
As for my comparisions I was asked to name the weapons of the Cowboys...Texans...and Vikings in the passing game and supporting why they were better than what we field. I did that.
There are zero guarantees Ronnie will be healthy and productive this year. He has a long injury history and was just recovering from one prior to this one.
Ricky is old and we are gambling every year thinking that a back his age will be as productive as he had beent he year prior.
Do you like what you have seen from LEx Hilliard? Do u think he can be a dynamic game changing back in this league??? Doubt u find many who feel he will.
